Man Utd’s most expensive flops and what happened after their Old Trafford nightmares including Di Maria and Lukaku

MANCHESTER UNITED are climbing back up the Premier League thanks to a mix of solid signings and homegrown talent.
Scott McTominay has been a near-ever-present under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, while Bruno Fernandes has proved worth every penny of the £50million spent in January.

How Man Utd’s big-money flop XI could look, including Alexis Sanchez

And while United have a history of making some incredible signings, they also have a knack for spending big on flops.
From Alexis Sanchez and Angel Di Maria to Juan Sebastian Veron and Fred, check out our best XI of United mega-money failures.
    GOALKEEPER – Anders Lindegaard
    Cost: £5million
    From: Aalesund (2010)

WHILE not exactly expensive in modern money, £5m on a goalkeeper who featured just 19 times in five years is hardly a bargain.
Since quitting United, Lindegaard has turned out for West Brom and Preston, before joining Premier League side Burnley in 2017 where he was released in 2019 having failed just twice – both in the Carabao Cup.
    He’s now at Helsingborg.
    DEFENDER – Matteo Darmian
    Cost: £12.9m

    From: Torino (2015)
DARMIAN has played 60 times in the Premier League in four years at United, but never made the right-back slot his own.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s arrival saw his surplus to requirements, and he joined Parma on a four-year deal in 2019.
    DEFENDER – Daley Blind

Daley Blind never quite brought his best form to Man UtdCredit: Reuters
    Cost: £14m
    From: Ajax (2014)
ALWAYS a tough one to judge, Blind both proved he was a good footballer and failed to shine while at Man Utd.
After four years at the club, Blind opted to head back to Ajax last year where he has gone on to become a key player once more – and helped his side reach the Champions League semi-finals in 2019.
    DEFENDER – Marcos Rojo
    Cost: £16m
    From: Sporting (2014)
ANOTHER defender United can’t seem to budge, Rojo has been plagued by injuries and lack of form in his five years at the club.
He has appeared in nine games in all competitions last season and precisely zero this term and is surely heading for the Old Trafford exit in January.

    CM – Morgan Schneiderlin
    Cost: £24m
    From: Southampton (2015)
AFTER seven years at Saints, Schneiderlin was supposed to be United’s midfield maestro for years to come.
But after just two years, the France star was shipped off to Everton with 32 very underwhelming appearances under his belt.
He’s now at Nice after his three-year stint on Merseyside.
    CM – Juan Sebastian Veron

Veron was a shell of his Lazio and Argentina best in EnglandCredit: Reuters
    Cost: £28m
    From: Lazio (2001)
ARGUABLY one of the best midfielders of his generation, the only positive about Veron’s time at United was that at least it was better than his time at Chelsea.
Both transfers frequently pop up in ‘worst Premier League transfers of all-time’ lists – and with good reason.
The ex-Lazio man could have helped United be as unstoppable in Europe as they were domestically, but alas, it wasn’t to be.
    CM – Fred
    Cost: £52m
    From: Shakhtar Donetsk (2018)
A HUGE-MONEY signing in 2018, Fred has been thoroughly underwhelming for United.
The Brazilian is starting to find his feet as part of a deep-lying tandem including McTominay. But for £52m you want more.
    CAM – Henrikh Mkhitaryan
    Cost: £30m
    From: Borussia Dortmund (2016)
SOUGHT-AFTER by a host of Europe’s giants during his days in Ukraine and Germany, Man Utd won the race for Mkhitaryan’s signature.
But after 39 disappointing Premier League appearances he was part of the ill-fated swap deal with Arsenal for Sanchez.
He’s now performing admirably at Serie A side Roma.
    FW – Angel Di Maria

Di Maria cost United £59.7m – and spent just one dreadful year at the clubCredit: PA:Empics Sport
    Cost: £59.7m
    From: Real Madrid (2014)
SUPERB at Real, brilliant at Paris Saint-German… bang average at United.
Yes, we all remember that goal against Leicester, but what else did Di Maria do at Old Trafford? Very, very little.
His single season at United was worth nowhere near the £59.7m spent, before he went on to thrive in Ligue 1.
    FW – Romelu Lukaku
    Cost: £75m
    From: Everton (2017)
BOTH Chelsea and United were chasing Lukaku and Alvaro Morata in the summer of 2017.
Maybe things would have been different for the two flop strikers had they switched destinations.
But Lukaku – save for a few brief matches where he showed his unstoppable potential – was dreadful at United… at least, by the standard we now hold him to.
Shipped off to Inter last summer, Lukaku is now one of Europe’s most-feared strikers thanks to his knack for scoring goals.
    FW – Alexis Sanchez
    Cost: £505,000-a-week
    From: Arsenal (2018)
A FREE signing. What could possibly go wrong?
Well, throwing £505,000-a-week down the drain and struggling to sell him due to his wages, that’s what.
Former Barcelona and Arsenal star Sanchez scored three – just THREE – goals during his 18 months at Old Trafford… that’s roughly £40m in wages.
    HONOURABLE MENTION
    Anderson – £20m (Porto, 2007)
    Memphis Depay – £25m (PSV, 2015)

Man Utd ‘working on Marcos Rojo’s January transfer exit’ with Newcastle interested in outcast defender

NEWCASTLE UNITED want Marcos Rojo with Manchester United already ‘working on’ his January exit.
The Argentina international has fallen way down the pecking order under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

He has only six months left on his £100,000-a-week but the club retain an option of extending it by a further year.
However, The Athletic claims Steve Bruce is desperate to strengthen his Magpies defence.
And 30-year-old Rojo’s versatility to be able to play centrally or at left-back has helped to make him a top target.
But Newcastle will face competition from elsewhere in the Premier League for the South American.

Bottom of the table Sheffield United, who were beaten 3-2 last night by the Red Devils, are also keen.
And two unknown Spanish sides are also looking into the prospect of bringing him in from Old Trafford.
United are happy to let him leave, with the report stating they are already in talks with the ace regarding his exit once the transfer window re-opens next month.
Rojo has made over 120 appearances for United since his arrival in 2014.

But he has not featured for the first team in over a year and spent time back in his homeland with Estudiantes last season.
He is believed to want to remain in England, and that could put Newcastle in pole position for him.
And Rojo will be hoping he can impress enough in the remainder of the campaign at a new club to earn himself a long-term deal.

Man Utd boss Solskjaer insists Edinson Cavani ‘never meant any harm’ over Instagram post after FA racism charge

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER insists Edinson Cavani ‘never meant any harm’ over the Instagram post that landed the Manchester United star in race-row controversy.
The 33-year-old is facing the prospect of a three-match ban after being charged by the Football Association with misconduct over an ‘aggravated breach’ of its race rules.

Uruguay international Cavani came off the bench to fire two goals past Southampton in a 3-2 comeback win for the Red Devils.
But his two-goal match winning cameo at the end of November was soon overshadowed.
He reposted a message from a friend on his Instagram story that contained the words ‘Gracis negrito’, which translated means ‘Thanks, little black’.
The former PSG ace deleted it three hours later and issued a public apology after discovering that the term was considered offensive.

However, the FA have still announced it has charged the hotshot.
Cavani is understood to have claimed he was responding to a friend that carries that specific nickname and that same person also refers to his own son by it in his written reasons to the FA.
United boss Solskjaer jumped to his South American star’s defence after last night’s 3-2 win at Sheffield United, saying: “I know Edinson never meant any harm, it’s his friend.
“He’s come into a new country and made a mistake, he didn’t mean any malice. He’s apologised. We will work with the FA and hope it will be OK.”

A club statement from the Red Devils stresses there was no ‘malicious intent’ from Cavani and how he was unaware of the term having racial connotations due to it being used with affection in South America.

United’s statement read: “Manchester United and all of our players are fully committed to the fight against racism and we will continue to work with the FA – along with other governing bodies and organisations, and through our own campaigns – in that regard.
“We note the FA decision today to charge Edinson Cavani for his social media reply to a friend’s message of congratulations following the Southampton game.
“Edinson and the club were clear that there was absolutely no malicious intent behind the message.”
But the FA hired linguistics experts for its investigation, and they felt Cavani’s actions warranted a charge.
He has until January 4 to respond with United yet to decide whether to contest the charge.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must fix Man Utd’s dodgy starts having won last SIX away games having conceded first

MANCHESTER UNITED achieved a little bit of history as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s away day specialists won on the road again.
They became the first side ever to score two or more in ten consecutive away games in the Premier League.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must figure out how to get get Man Utd playing from the first whistleCredit: AFP

And no team has ever won six straight games on their travels after going behind in each of them – until now.
It’s been great to watch for United fans from their armchairs – in stark contrast to what their team have produced at Old Trafford.
“Going forward, they are electric,” said former United striker Michael Owen after goals from Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial saw them in front by half-time.
And there are echoes of some of Sir Alex Ferguson’s swash-buckling old sides in the way they keep backing themselves whenever they fall behind.

⚽ Read our Man United live blog for the latest news from Old Trafford
But Solskjaer’s men cannot keep doing it if they are to be genuine title contenders.
Right now, in theory at least, you have to say they are.
If United win their game in hand they will be second – just two points behind leaders Liverpool.

Yet what happened in Leipzig last week should serve as a reminder that top sides don’t throw leads away so easily.

Marcus Rashford scored twice to help Man Utd come from behind to pinch all three points at Bramall Lane

The Germans raced into a 3-0 lead and hung on – just about – to send Solskjaer’s men tumbling out of the Champions League.
And in truth, their stiffest domestic away games are all still to come.
United have gone behind and then come back to win at West Ham, Everton, Newcastle, Brighton, Southampton and now Sheffield United this season.
All of them good wins in the circumstances – but none of them are going to be challenging for the title this year.
Their next two on their travels in the league are at Leicester and Liverpool – so now things will start to get serious.
They cannot keep giving gifts away like the one Dean Henderson presented to his old club inside the first five minutes here.
Because it’s difficult to imagine Jurgen Klopp’s men being as generous as the Blades and West Ham have been in the last two United away fixtures.
Solskjaer believes these next couple of weeks will tell him whether his team are ready to challenge for the title this season.
If they had been able to get their home form right, he might already know that they are.
It’s hard to believe this is the same side who performed so meekly in the dreary goalless draw against Manchester City at the weekend.
A first league meeting in 16 years with bitter rivals Leeds would be a perfect time to put the record straight.

Watch Paul Pogba’s stunning assist for Man Utd team-mate Anthony Martial’s first Premier League goal of season

PAUL POGBA showed Manchester United fans what they would be missing should he quit the club in 2021 with a sublime assist for Anthony Martial.
With the game against Sheffield United evenly poised at 1-1, the French midfielder provided a moment of magic to give his side the lead.

Paul Pogba sent Anthony Martial through on goal with a first-time, lofted through ball in a moment of pure class

Bruno Fernandes picked up the ball on the right wing and played the ball inside to Pogba.
The 2018 World Cup winner, 27, didn’t even take a touch as he played a perfectly weighted, chipped through ball to serve up the ball on a silver platter for Martial.
The vision and execution showed just why Man Utd paid a then-world record £89million for Pogba in 2016.
But with fans’ jaws on the floor, Martial kept his focus to eventually slot the ball into the net.

⚽ Read our Man United live blog for the latest news from Old Trafford
It was Martial’s first Premier League goal of the season in his eighth game, having previously managed just two Champions League goals for club and country this season.
It capped a remarkable turnaround for Man Utd who got off to an horrific start at Bramall Lane.
Under five minutes into the game, Dean Henderson – who spent the past two seasons on loan at the Sheff Utd – gifted his former club the simplest of leads.

However, Marcus Rashford restored parity after taking a superb touch and rifling home an unstoppable equaliser.

And after Martial grabbed United’s second, Rashford grabbed another to give his side a 3-1 lead, before David McGoldrick set up a nervy final few minutes after making it 3-2 in the 87th minute.
Despite all the excitement, it was Pogba pulling the strings for United at Bramall Lane.
Clinton Morrison told BBC Radio 5 Live: “This is a good understanding Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial have.
“He just clips the ball into space and Martial runs off the back of John Egan.
“They are causing a lot of problems now… Paul Pogba is having a big influence on this game.
“He made the goal for Martial and this is what you want to see.
“Most of Manchester United’s good things have come through Pogba.
“He can do the running and is comfortable in possession.”

Watch Man Utd goalkeeper Dean Henderson’s howler to give former club Sheffield United the lead at Bramall Lane

DEAN HENDERSON endured a nightmare return to Bramall Lane as his howler gifted Sheffield United the easiest of goals against Manchester United.
The England goalkeeper, who spent the past two seasons on loan at the Blades, handed the hosts the lead just under five minutes into the game.

With seemingly no threat posed to the Man Utd goal, Harry Maguire played a short pass back to Henderson.
With Oliver Burke quickly closing in, the goalkeeper – starting in place of David De Gea – hesitated rather than putting his boot through the ball.
Burke got a tackle in, blocking Henderson’s attempted clearance.
The Red Devils stopper then stumbled as he battled to beat Burke to the loose ball.

Eventually, it fell for David McGoldrick who was free to fire the ball into an empty net.
The blunder will be a massive blow for Henderson, who had been hoping to steal the No1 jersey from De Gea permanently this season.
However, having been limited to mainly cup games, Henderson would have been keen to put on a strong showing at his old stomping ground.

After the error, Clinton Morrison told BBC 5 Live Sport: “Tonight was a mistake from Dean Henderson.

“It is not good the way Manchester United keep conceding early goals.
“It is something Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will want to address.
“When you are coming in for the regular No1, you want a nice, easy night.
“Henderson needs to put it to the back of his mind now.”
Fortunately for Henderson, his mistake wasn’t punished too badly.
Marcus Rashford scored twice, while Anthony Martial netted his first Premier League goal of the season as United went 3-1 up.
McGoldrick grabbed his second goal with three minutes of the 90 remaining to give his side hope.
And Henderson redeemed himself with a superb save in added time to ensure United left Sheffield with all three points.

Man Utd revive Saul Niguez transfer interest with club looking to land Atletico Madrid star after previous failed bid

MANCHESTER UNITED have reportedly revived their interest in Atletico Madrid star Saul Niguez.
The 26-year-old Spanish midfielder has been a long-term target for the Red Devils.

Now Todo Fichajes claims they have made him their top target to replace Paul Pogba.
And Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are ready to pay up to £63million to bring him to Old Trafford.
However, Niguez’s release clause fee is worth £135m, and they may end up having to pay closer to that figure to get his signature.
Speculation over Pogba’s future has mounted again over recent weeks with Juventus keen to take him back to Italy.

His agent Mino Raiola revealed last week that the France international, 27, wants to leave for pastures new.
Despite Raiola’s outburst and Pogba’s total silence on the subject, the midfielder was then given a bizarre start in the 0-0 draw with Manchester City on Saturday.
But with just 18 months remaining on his current contract, Pogba’s second spell at the Theatre of Dreams looks to be coming to a certain end.
Meanwhile, Solskjaer wants to strengthen his squad in four positions.

The report says United are in the market for a winger, a centre-back, a right-back and a defensive midfielder.
And that Solskjaer and Woodward will identify their exact targets for each position by the end of the year.
And they could even be tempted to move for them should they become available next month.

Man Utd transfer plans revealed with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looking to strengthen in FOUR positions amid season woes

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER has reportedly already identified FOUR positions he wants to strengthen to turn Manchester United into title contenders.
The Red Devils have crashed out of the Champions League this season and landed a tough tie against Spanish side Real Sociedad in the Europa League.

Away from Europe, they have also endured an up-and-down campaign domestically, although they could potentially move fifth with a big win at Sheffield United on Thursday night.
However, despite the club expecting a quiet January window, MEN claims Solskjaer has informed chief Ed Woodward of four targets he wants before the end of next summer.
The report says United are in the market for a winger, a centre-back, a right-back and a defensive midfielder.
And that Solskjaer and Woodward will identify their exact targets for each position by the end of the year – and they could even be tempted to move for them should they become available next month.

Dayot Upamecano is believed to be United’s No1 choice for central defence, although they are also keen on Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane and Brighton’s Ben White.
Real’s Lucas Vazquez has also been linked with the right back role to provide competition for Aaron Wan-Bissaka along with Atletico Madrid’s ex-Tottenham ace Kieran Trippier.
The England international is a boyhood fan of the Red Devils and only has 18 months left on his deal with the La Liga giants.
United are interested in West Ham’s Declan Rice to bolster their midfielder but Chelsea remain favourites for the £60m-rated star.

That could lead to Solskjaer looking into the possibility of recruiting Denis Zakaria from Borussia Moenchengladbach after his displays in the Bundesliga and Champions League.
They are also expected to resume their long-running pursuit of Jadon Sancho after missing out on the Borussia Dortmund winger in the summer.
And today’s report also states Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele and Watford’s Ismail Sarr also both fit the bill as a ‘ready-made’ wide attacker that they are looking for.
United will attempt to make room for new additions by flogging unwanted players.
Both Marcos Rojo and Sergio Romero will be available for transfer as they near the end of their contracts.
While they are believed to be open to offers for defensive duo Phil Jones and Eric Bailly.
