Man Utd DO have ‘confidence and belief’ to win Premier League title with ‘five or six’ in race, claims Roy Keane

MANCHESTER UNITED have the ‘confidence and belief’ to win the Premier League, according to their legendary ex-captain Roy Keane.
He believes the Red Devils are among ‘five to six teams’ that can challenge for the title – but admits Liverpool are in the driving seat.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are second to the Reds on goal difference.
And his old team-mate Keane thinks United are in the mix to go all the way.
Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “There’s a few. Liverpool are the strongest, they’ve been slacking off, a bit sloppy.
“United have sorted out their home form. Tottenham had a good home win yesterday. You can’t write Man City off.

“We’ve criticised them recently because they’ve set such high standards over the years. But there are five to six teams who can challenge.
“[United], if they keep winning football matches. We were really critical at the start of the season.
“Their home form was so bad, it was shocking. Some of their performances and results.
“But away from home they were fantastic. Even their last few victories, a bit of luck – penalty against Villa, injury-time winner against Wolves.

“They’ll be getting confidence and belief they can at least challenge Liverpool.”
Man City moved fifth after beating Chelsea 3-1 at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
They still have a game in hand on United and Liverpool and sit just four points behind the leaders.
United travel to Anfield to face Liverpool on January 17 in what could prove to be a crunch clash in the title race.

Man Utd turn transfer attention to Erling Haaland after ‘dodging a bullet’ over Jadon Sancho from Dortmund last summer

MANCHESTER UNITED have turned their attention to Erling Haaland after they ‘dodged a bullet’ by missing out on Jadon Sancho last summer, according to reports.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made England winger Sancho, 20, his No1 target during last summer’s window.

But United failed to land their man, with Borussia Dortmund holding out for £108million.
And now, the Mirror claim United officials believed they ‘dodged a bullet’ in missing out on Sancho.
The Three Lions whizz has struggled for form this season, failing to score a single goal in 11 Bundesliga games this season, laying on just three assists.
Last term, Sancho was involved in a remarkable 34 goals in just 32 league games, scoring 17 times and adding a further 17 assists.

⚽ Read our Man United live blog for the latest news from Old Trafford
His red-hot form led to a fierce battle between United and Dortmund in the summer.
The Old Trafford giants failed to lodge a formal bid before the August 10 deadline set by the Germans.
And when United did finally bid it was believed to be much lower than Dortmund’s £108m asking price.

It’s thought United bid closer to £60m-£70m, with the remainder of the fee to be paid in instalments.

But after Sancho suddenly went cold, United are believed to be considering using the money to sign club team-mate Haaland.
Last January, Solskjaer made his move to sign compatriot Haaland – with whom he worked with as a youngster at Molde.
Then at RB Salzburg, Haaland eventually moved to Borussia Dortmund.
It’s also widely claimed Real Madrid have a ‘verbal pact’ with Dortmund they can sign the Norway star in the summer of 2022, with Barcelona also keen.
But, undeterred, United are said to be furiously chasing Haaland, 20, this month in a monster transfer.
The Red Devils have lacked an out-an-out striker in recent seasons, with Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood seemingly more comfortable on the wing.

Edinson Cavani has come in and provided a more traditional No9 option.
But aged 33, the Uruguayan is not a long-term prospect for Solskjaer, with Haaland still having an incredible future ahead of him.
He has scored 33 times in his last 32 matches for Dortmund.
And with United chiefs suddenly confident they can challenge for the Premier League, they’re willing to break the bank to bring in an elite striker.
Level on points with league leaders Liverpool, United could see Haaland as the missing piece to their puzzle rather than Sancho.

Furious Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz tells refs to ‘use VAR CORRECTLY’ after conceding controversial penalty vs Man Utd

FURIOUS Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz has ordered referees to ‘use VAR CORRECTLY’ after Manchester United’s controversial penalty during Friday’s game at Old Trafford.
The Brazil midfielder, 22, gave away a crucial spot-kick after he was adjudged to have caught Paul Pogba in the box.

Luiz was left furious after he was adjudged to have fouled Pogba

With the game evenly poised at 1-1, Bruno Fernandes stepped up to score what turned out to be the match-winning penalty.
Villa boss Dean Smith had already called the penalty ‘dubious’, suggesting Pogba had ‘tripped himself’.
And Luiz has taken to Twitter to reveal his fury, clearly of the opinion ref Michael Oliver should have called for VAR.
Luiz ranted: “I see this video, I can’t believe it was a penalty.

“I always support fairer football, with fewer mistakes, but then I stop and see these types of moves.
“If we have VAR to help, let’s start using it CORRECTLY.
“These mistakes can define the future of clubs!”

Luiz’s Twitter rant came shortly after his own boss called the decision into question.

Speaking after the game, Smith said: “My view was it was a penalty from where I was stood.
“I thought Douglas had got too tight with Pogba and he went down.
“But I’ve just gone in the dressing room and seen it back and there’s a lot of doubt.
“I think he’s tripped himself up.
“Similar to Douglas when he was running back in the first half – he tripped himself up.
“For me there’s enough doubt to send [Oliver] over the screen but he doesn’t get sent over to the screen.
“I’m confused but I feel he tripped himself over.”
Fernandes’ goal stole all three points for Man Utd and saw them draw level on points with league leaders Liverpool.
In fact, Man Utd are TOP of the league based on games played since the Portuguese star arrived, three points clear of Liverpool.

Watch Man Utd star Paul Pogba’s outrageous flick in build up to Anthony Martial’s goal vs Aston Villa

PAUL POGBA produced an outrageous piece of skill to help give Manchester United the lead during their win over Aston Villa on Friday night.

And Pogba repaid his boss’ faith with an impressive performance capped by a superb piece of skill in the build-up to the game’s first goal.
Standing in his own half, Pogba plucked the ball out of the air with a sublime first touch to bring it under control.
Rather than put it on the deck, the 2018 World Cup winner flicked the ball over a helpless John McGinn’s head.
Pogba then nodded the ball out wide to Marcus Rashford.

The gorgeous piece of trickery led to United taking a 1-0 lead over high-flying Villa.
Having dished the ball out to Rashford, the England forward quickly played the ball out to Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
The right-back’s cross was missed by Tyrone Mings, leaving Martial free to nod the ball past Emiliano Martinez in the Villa goal.

Bertrand Traore equalised for Villa after 58 minutes to set up a tense finale.

But Bruno Fernandes nervelessly tucked away a penalty just three minutes later to ensure United took all three points and moved level on points with league leaders Liverpool.
However, there was some controversy surrounding the game-deciding penalty.
Villa boss Dean Smith claimed Pogba ‘tripped himself’ after he appeared to be brought down by Douglas Luiz.

Man Utd ‘confident of landing Jadon Sancho transfer for less than £100m’ after Dortmund star’s drastic dip in form

MANCHESTER UNITED are confident they will sign Jadon Sancho for less than £100million this month after the Borussia Dortmund star’s drastic dip in form, according to reports.
The Red Devils made the England winger, 20, their No1 target during last summer’s window but failed to land their man.

Dortmund demanded £108m up front for Sancho, but United play hardball and ultimately were forced to look elsewhere.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Co failed to lodge a formal bid before the August 10 deadline set by the Bundesliga giants.
And when they did finally bid it was believed to be much lower than Dortmund’s asking price.
It’s thought United bid closer to £60m-£70m, with the remainder of the £108m fee to be paid in instalments.

Sancho ultimately stayed put, despite making it clear he was keen to move to Old Trafford.
But the Three Lions whizkid has struggled in 2020-21, failing to score a single goal in 11 Bundesliga games this season, laying on just three assists.
Last season, Sancho was involved in a stunning 34 goals in just 32 league games, scoring 17 times and adding a further 17 assists.

Even in 2018-19 – starting the season aged just 18 – the England ace scored 12 times and added another 17 assists in 34 matches.

Despite his paltry record this term, 90min claim Man Utd chiefs are still keen to sign Sancho.
The report adds United are now confident they will be able to land their man for under £100m thanks to his dip in form.
It’s claimed Old Trafford chiefs will learn from last summer’s mistakes and launch an early bid.
United could even launch a bid BEFORE this summer’s delayed European Championship rather than let the saga play out into the new season.
Both former Dortmund boss Lucien Favre and club chief Michael Zorc have backed Sancho amid his struggles this season – even blaming the United transfer speculation for his sudden dip in form.
In October, then-boss Favre claimed: “There was a lot of talk about Jadon in the summer, something like that can also have an influence.”

And just last month, Zorc added: “I believe it is easy to see he is not in the best of form.
“Jadon is a player who doesn’t talk a lot but who delivers answers on the pitch.
“Whether this is tomorrow, in a week or at some other point, I don’t know.
“What I do know is that it will happen.”
A host of other European giants including Chelsea and Liverpool have been linked with Sancho in the past.

Man Utd ‘will have to fork out £100m for Jack Grealish transfer’ after rejecting chance to buy him for £65m in summer

MANCHESTER UNITED are reportedly still keen on signing Jack Grealish after missing out on him in September.
But they will have to fork out a whopping £100million to Aston Villa to sign the star.

The 25-year-old is heading to Old Trafford tonight to captain his hometown team against the Red Devils.
However, he could have been lining up against the Villans if United had agreed to Villa’s asking price during the summer transfer window.
Now the Daily Mail claims Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men are still keen on a deal for the England international.
Grealish looked set to leave Villa for United just a few months ago until the move broke down over his valuation.

Solskjaer’s club would only offer a maximum of £65m, which was £35m short of what Villa wanted.
United then pulled out of a deal due to the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic after splashing £39m on Donny van de Beek from Ajax.
Grealish then went on to sign a new five-year contract at Villa, ensuring his talents remain at maximum value for interested parties.
And United are not the only ones keen on securing the signature of the playmaker, who has scored six times and provided eight assists in 15 games this season.

They are among a host of European big boys reportedly ‘still weighing up a bid’ for the playmaker this summer.
Speaking about Grealish ahead of tonight’s game, United boss Solskjaer said: “I don’t want to say too much about other teams’ players but of course he’s a player we know we have to look for.
“He’s a player for Aston Villa and England who has only improved.
“The goal he scored last season was a brilliant goal and we’ve faced him enough times to know it’s going to be a difficult game.”

Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reveals admiration for Jack Grealish after transfer links to Aston Villa star

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER admits he is a big admirer of Jack Grealish as he prepares to go up against the Aston Villa ace on Thursday.
Manchester United have often been linked with a move for the England new boy in recent years.

But at Old Trafford on New Year’s Day they have to be sure he does not de-rail their Premier League title push.
He scored a memorable goal at the Theatre of Dreams last season as Villa earned a 2-2 draw.
And the 25-year-old has been in great form this season – helping Dean Smith’s men upto fifth place in the table.
Solskjaer said: “The goal he scored last season was a brilliant goal and we’ve faced him enough times to know it’s going to be a difficult game.

“He’s a player for Aston Villa and England who has only improved.
“I don’t want to say too much about other teams’ players but of course he’s a player we know we have to look for.”
A win for United would see them go level on points with leaders Liverpool with the half-way point of the season approaching.
But Solskjaer is taking nothing for granted against a team who have improved massively since they just avoided relegation last season.

He said: “They have been brilliant. I have to say Dean Smith has done a fantastic job.
“We played them pre-season and they beat us then in the one game we had before the league.
“We know all about how tough this is going to be.
“They’ve got individual players that are physically strong, defensively they have been one of the better teams in the league.
“When you beat Liverpool 7-2 it’s not just defending. It’s counter attack and quality players.
“That is maybe the game everyone will remember from this season.”

After celebrating two years in charge at United last week, Solskjaer is starting to notice changes in the mentality within his own squad.
And he hopes they will stand them in good stead as they look to maintain their title challenge going forward.
He added: “One, they’re two years older than when I came. Two, some of them are really strong personalities that we’ve brought in and they have been a really good influence.
We have competition for places which means you cannot go around and think you can just make your way being part of this team.
“You only deserve to be in a team that you contribute to.
“I think everyone has realised they are privileged to be part of Man United, such a fantastic club with a fantastic history.
“When you’re here enjoy it as much as you can and maybe you’ll experience some fantastic times.
“You’ve got winners like Juan Mata and Nemanja Matic. They don’t play every single game but they are so influential in the group and the build-up to games and during games when they’re not playing.”

Man Utd trigger one-year extension to Jesse Lingard’s deal to stop midfielder leaving for free in summer

MANCHESTER UNITED have triggered a one-year extension on Jesse Lingard’s contract.
Despite the midfielder being out-of-favour this season, the club have moved swiftly so as not to lose him on a free in the summer.

Lingard would have been able to start discussions with overseas clubs in the next few days.
But United have safeguarded themselves to get a fee from prospective interested parties.
SunSport exclusively revealed United’s plans on Lingard’s extension back in September.
The 28-year-old has failed to appear in a Premier League game this season, with his only two appearances coming in the EFL Cup.

The England ace has been eyed by a number of Premier League clubs, including Everton and West Ham.
Lingard has also been strongly linked with Tottenham.
The £100,000 a week ace was said to be determined to fight for his spot, despite being way down the pecking order.
United have huge competition in midfield with Paul Pogba, Donny van de Beek and Bruno Fernandes among others already in the squad.

Meanwhile, a number of European clubs have had a look at bringing him in, including sides in Serie A.
But now United will be able to ask close to his £25million valuation – though that may be negotiable such have his struggles been this season.
He made 22 appearances in the Premier League in the last campaign, but the majority were from the bench.
Lingard has won 24 caps for his country, having featured at the 2018 World Cup.
But the last of these Three Lions appearances came in June 2019.
Having risen through the United academy, Lingard has gone on to make 209 appearances for his boyhood club.
