Barcelona REJECTED chance to link up Cristiano Ronaldo with Lionel Messi for just £15m before Man Utd transfer

CRISTIANO RONALDO and Lionel Messi are sworn rivals, destined to divide fans in their fight to be considered football’s greatest of all time forever.
But it could have been so different, with Barcelona REJECTING the chance to sign Ronaldo and pair him with Messi for just £15million in 2003.

That summer, the Portuguese star was on the brink of leaving Sporting Lisbon after a rapid rise to prominence.
Of course, Ronaldo ultimately joined Manchester United and shot to superstardom before moving to Real Madrid six years later.
But now, Barcelona presidential candidate Joan Laporta has revealed he turned down the chance to bring Ronaldo to the Nou Camp in a deal that could have changed the face of the sport forever.
Laporta – president at the time – claimed he has ‘no regrets’, saying it was between Ronaldo and Ronaldinho, with Barca opting for the established Brazilian star.

Looking back on that fateful decision 18 years ago, Laporta told Iniestazo: “We were about to sign Ronaldinho and Rafa Marquez.
“Marquez’s people proposed Cristiano Ronaldo to us. He was at Sporting at the time.
“One of his agents said that they had a player who they had sold to [Manchester] United for €19m, but they’d sell him to us for €17m.
“But we had already invested in Ronaldinho at the time. Cristiano played more out wide than in the centre.

“We thought we were covered, so we rejected him.
    “I don’t regret it.”
Barcelona would go on to enjoy huge success with Ronaldinho, winning two LaLiga crowns and one Champions League title during his five-year stay.
The Brazilian also won the Ballon d’Or during his time at the Nou Camp, in 2005.
Rather than link up with Messi, Ronaldo headed to Old Trafford – where he would three Premier League crowns and one Champions League.
He too won a Ballon d’Or at his new club, taking home the first of his five FIVE awards in 2008.
After quitting Man Utd in 2009, Ronaldo would go on to terrorise Barca while playing for their fiercest rivals, Real Madrid.
In nine years at the Bernabeu, he won two LaLiga crowns and a staggering FOUR Champions League crowns before joining Juventus for £99m in 2018.

Man Utd boost in title race with Liverpool as stats show team top after 17 games has won Prem eight of last ten seasons

MANCHESTER UNITED are 80 PER CENT certain to win the Premier League this season, according to the statistics.
The Red Devils went three points clear of arch-rivals Liverpool at the top of the table after Paul Pogba’s volley led them to a 1-0 win over Burnley on Tuesday night.

United are battling to win their first league crown since Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season in 2012-13.
Since the legendary Scot left, the Old Trafford clubs have been mired in mediocrity, limping into the European places in a far cry from their teams of yesterday.
But the stats suggest they’re overwhelming favourites to win the Premier League.
Incredibly, the team top of the table after 17 games has gone on to lift the trophy in EIGHT of the last ten seasons.

⚽ Read our Man United live blog for the latest news from Old Trafford
Only Liverpool – in 2013-14 and 2018-19 – have surrendered a lead after the same numbers of games.
Both seasons they finished second and were forced to wait until 2019-20 to break their Premier League title drought.
But every other year since 2010-11, the team top after 17 matches has lifted the famous trophy, including United in 2011 and 2013.

Man Utd next face Liverpool in an almighty six-pointer at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

Should Jurgen Klopp’s Reds win, they would go above United on goal difference.
But if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Co leave Merseyside triumphant, they will be six points clear of the reigning champions with 20 games to play.
However, there is a slight catch: United’s tally of 36 points after 17 games is the LOWEST of any team top after 17 games in the past ten seasons.
Liverpool in 2013-14 – with their fearsome ‘SAS’ partnership of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge – also racked up 36 points in the same span, ultimately finishing second in a thrilling season finale.
For context, last season the then-league-leading Reds had racked up 49 points, 13 more than United this season.
In 2018-19, Liverpool were top again with 45 points, while City were top on 49 points after 17 matches in 2017-18.

United did win the league with just 37 points on the board from 17 games in 2010-11.
But that year, Fergie’s men were unbeaten from their 17 matches, compared to this year’s crop who have already lost three times.
Solskjaer recently urged his Man Utd stars to keep their focus and not believe the job is done.
But a win over Liverpool this weekend would solidify their standing atop the Premier League, with the glory days on the brink of a return.

After going quiet at the start of the season the neighbours are noisy again.

It was clear from the start that Burnley were out to block and frustrate and generally break United up, but the visitors never gave up and got their reward.
It was tough for long periods and Edinson Cavani was getting particularly irate on his first game after a three-match suspension.
He was at the centre of the first half’s most controversial moment when he burst through but was hauled down by Robbie Brady.
The referee gave a free kick just outside the area but as the last man should a red card not follow for Brady?
But wait, back at the other end referee Kevin Friend had missed Luke Shaw following through on Johann Gudmundson.
So if that was a foul it negated the Cavani incident and after watching various replays he decided rightly that it was and Shaw was lucky to just be booked.
United’s frustrations grew when it looked like they were harshly denied a goal in the 38th minute.
Shaw, who was constantly up and down that left flank, provided the cross, Harry Maguire rose at the far post and headed back past the goalkeeper and into the far top corner.
United celebrated but their joy was short-lived as Maguire was adjudged to have fouled Erik Pieters as he rose.
But to get the header in it was impossible not to make contact with the static Burnley player.
    So United went again.

Anthony Martial, quiet for most of the half, tried to make a breakthrough just before the interval with a curling shot to the far top corner which Nick Pope tipped away.
United remained on the front foot and were even more dominant in the second half with some slick one-touch football.
One sweeping move from back to front ended when Cavani scuffed his chance.
Fernandes had two goes from outside the area but both were straight at the goalkeeper.
Burnley were doing the job they were asked, United could not find the cutting edge to finish some fine build-up play.
Then Pogba intervened. He had been running the show second-half and started and finished the move to make the breakthrough.
Jumping to win a header just over half way he then set off to the edge of the area as Fernandes found Rashford.
His cross was perfect for the French World Cup winner to angle his body and catch volley on the full that went past Pope with the aid of a deflection off Lowton.
The joy and relief were obvious as Pogba summoned over his team-mates for a huddle.
There is a spirit in this United side that is obvious in how they play, how they fight and how they celebrate and support each other.
Not since Sir Alex Ferguson’s final campaign have they stood on top at this stage of the season.

Maguire thought he’d given United the lead only to be punished for a foulCredit: News Group Newspapers Ltd
The question is can they keep it up and challenge to the end?
The swings and roundabouts have been spinning more than ever in this strangest of Premier League seasons.
When United last lost in the league on November 1 at home to Arsenal they stood 15th with seven points after six games.
Their worst start since David Moyes succeeded Sir Alex.
Fast forward two and a bit months and here they are.
They last lost away in the league almost exactly a year ago and at Anfield.
They went into that game 27 points behind Jurgen Klopps’s side.
Now 12 months on there has been a swing of 33 points as they go three ahead.
Yes this is a very different United. A better one. A United ready to win a title again.

The impressive effort sent Man Utd three points clear of fierce rivals Liverpool at the top of the table.
And he celebrated like the United stars of Sir Alex Ferguson’s era, recreating an iconic routine from Ryan Giggs and Paul Ince.
In 1992-93, Man Utd thrashed Middlesbrough 3-0, with Giggs opening the scoring with a 20th-minute strike.
The former Wales winger darted over to the corner flag and enthusiastically shook hands with team-mate Ince.

And on Tuesday night, another Paul – Pogba – was the man behind the celebration.
After scoring and being mobbed by his United pals, Pogba and Bailly stepped aside for a celebration of their own.
The pair performed a handshake-cum-dance routine to celebrate what could be a pivotal goal in Man Utd’s history.

And the resemblance to Giggs and Ince’s celebration was not lost on Gary Neville, who commented on it during Sky Sports’ broadcast.
He joked: “They’re shaking each other’s hands, a little dance. The last time i saw that was Ince and Giggs. And that was bad.”

Next up, United head to Anfield to take on reigning champions Liverpool on Sunday in an almighty six-pointer.
After a horror run of results, Jurgen Klopp’s Reds are now winless in their last three Premier League games.
A loss this weekend would see them slip six points adrift of United, who haven’t won the Premier League since Fergie’s final season, in 2012-13.
As things stand, United have 20 top-flight titles to Liverpool’s 19 – with United eager to open up a two-trophy gap, starting this weekend.

“But there’s still a long way and now we focus again until the end of the season.
“We had to keep our heads calm and just focus on ourselves and hope the goal would come and it did come.
“It was a great performance from everyone, good focus.
“Always happy when I win – today we won and I’m happy we play well.

Man Utd, City and Liverpool told to offer £100m for Kalidou Koulibaly transfer or not bother by Napoli chief

NAPOLI owner Aurelio De Laurentiis has warned Manchester United and Liverpool they must offer at least £100MILLION if they want to sign Kalidou Koulibaly this month.
Both clubs have been strongly linked with the Senegal centre-back, 29, in recent seasons.

But with both clubs keen on a new defender – for very different reasons – De Laurentiis has decided to put his foot down.
Liverpool are desperate for centre-back reinforcements after Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez suffered long-term injuries, with Dejan Lovren sold last summer and Joel Matip also picking up a series of knocks.
And Man Utd want to find a long-term partner for Harry Maguire.
Manchester City had also been interested last summer, but instead signed Nathan Ake and Ruben Dias for a combined £105.5m.

Now well into another transfer window, Jim White spoke to Napoli owner De Laurentiis about the prospect of another series of maddeningly low bids from the Premier League.
Speaking on talkSPORT, White revealed: “There isn’t a window in the last two, three or four that we don’t see big mentions of the Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly.
“This morning, I spoke to Aurelio De Laurentiis, the Napoli owner, and said what about your player, are there bids in for him?

“He laughed it off saying he’s not for sale.

“It seems on this occasion Koulibaly is going nowhere.
“He stays and that was as recent as this morning.
“Anyone going in with anything other than £100million for Koulibaly can forget it.”
“He’s absolutely not for sale unless one of the big clubs in England come up with £100million.”
Koulibaly has played in 18 games in all competitions for Napoli this season, helping to keep seven clean sheets.
He is under contract at the Serie A giants until the end of the 2022-23 season.

De Laurentiis also revealed Liverpool’s interest in Maksimovic has cooledCredit: AP:Associated Press
De Laurentiis also revealed Liverpool’s interest in Nikola Maksimovic has cooled of late.
The Reds were tipped with a move for the Serbian, 29, this month to fill the void left by Van Dijk and Gomez.
But De Laurentiis revealed Liverpool have gone quiet in recent weeks.
White continued: “[De Laurentiis] said to me ‘I thought you were going to refer to our defender Nikola Maksimovic and Liverpool’s previous interest in him’.
“So I said ‘are Liverpool still interested in your defender?’
“He interrupted me to say of course with injury problems to Gomez and Van Dijk but no they haven’t heard from them of late.”

Man Utd star Marcus Rashford shares photo of a food parcel sent to a family insisting it’s ‘not good enough’

MARCUS RASHFORD vented his anger on Twitter as he shared a food parcel sent to a family intended to last for three days.
The Manchester United striker has long campaigned for free school meals to be dished out to vulnerable children during the coronavirus crisis.

    — Marcus Rashford MBE (@MarcusRashford) January 11, 2021

And Rashford is continuing to ensure that those that require free school meals will be given the necessary food until at least the February half term.
Those eligible for free school meals are entitled to £30 food vouchers, though some parents have stated they have received food bundles instead that cost a fraction of the price.
One mum took to Twitter to share her experience, before claiming that instead of £30 worth of food, she only received a bundle she believes was worth £5.22.
Rashford immediately replied to her tweet, as he said: “Where is this being rolled out?

“If families are entitled to £30 worth of food, why is there delivery only equating to just over £5?!

Quote tweeting the image, he added: “Then imagine we expect the children to engage in learning from home.
“Not to mention the parents who, at times, have to teach them who probably haven’t eaten at all so their children can… We MUST do better. This is 2021.”
The Department for Education then declared they would be looking into the matter to ensure families were receiving nutritious food parcels.
A tweet read: “We are looking into this. We have clear guidelines and standards for food parcels, which we expect to be followed.
“Parcels should be nutritious and contain a varied range of food.”
Rashford teamed up with Child Food Poverty Taskforce last month to stop kids going hungry over the Christmas break.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer credits ‘more vocal’ Man Utd dressing room for charge to top of Premier League table

THE noise coming out of the Manchester United dressing room is getting louder and louder.
And that is music to the ears of manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Man Utd have been ‘more vocal’ and it’s benefited them, claims SolskjaerCredit: Getty Images – Getty

His Red Devils will go top of the table for the first time in nearly three-and-a-half years if they avoid defeat at Burnley on Tuesday.
And it would quieten down all those who have questioned the character of this United squad, such as former skipper Roy Keane — for the time being at least.
Norwegian Solskjaer — who won six Premier League titles during his glittering 11-year playing career at Old Trafford — firmly believes this group is made of the right stuff.
It is seven-and-a-half years since United were last champions but Solskjaer senses they have the fibre to at least stay in the hunt this time around.

⚽ Read our Man United live blog for the latest news from Old Trafford
He said: “We are very focused. We have some good characters in the team, the dressing room is louder, it’s more vocal.
“Of course, we have experience. We’ve got Nemanja Matic, who has won it a few times, Juan Mata, Edinson Cavani.
“Bruno Fernandes has come in and I think he wants to feel part of a team that is going to be challenging for trophies.

“We have more players that can grab the situation.

“I feel that the group’s mentality is getting better, so of course that is the big thing for me — that we go into games in the right frame of mind.
“Sometimes results don’t go as expected but I am very happy with where we are mentally at the moment.”
Despite the incentive on offer at Turf Moor tonight, Solskjaer was quick to warn his players not to believe they have got the Premier League sussed.
He said: “If at one point you think, ‘Ah, we’ve made it now, we’ve cracked it’ and you relax, that is when it’s going to hit you back.
“I like to think we go into this game not thinking about where we end up in the table that night but where we can end up in May. That’s what matters.”
Solskjaer played in a United team that was generally packed full of characters and winners — but their togetherness was also vital.
And the way Solskjaer’s men have picked themselves up after various setbacks this season is a promising sign in the eyes of the United boss.

Marcus Rashford will hope to fire Man Utd top of the table on TuesdayCredit: Getty Images – Getty

Man Utd enjoyed their training session on Monday with the top spot in the Premier League up for grabsCredit: Getty Images – Getty
He said: “There is nothing worse than having your manager or coaches always telling you what to do — this, that and the other.
“I’ve been lucky enough to have played in a team with loads of characters, that we look after ourselves and do yourself justice.
“You don’t just let yourself down, you can let your team down — so you need leaders there to really grab hold of the ones who stray out of line and from what we have agreed as a group.
“When you’re part of a football team, there’s nothing stronger than being part of a team that keeps together. I’ve also seen teams that have cliques, that don’t work together — that’s the killer of a team.
“So it’s a big, big thing that the group push themselves.
“I’ve been lucky enough at Molde and here now to have a feeling that I can trust them more and more to look after themselves.”
When Solskjaer was a player, United fans grew used to seeing their team at the top of the table.
They have almost forgotten the feeling now, so it would be a welcome sight for them to be looking down on old rivals Liverpool and Manchester City.

However, Solskjaer said: “The league table doesn’t matter now — but you’ve got to pick up points.
“When you get to March and April, that’s where the league will be decided.
“It’s important for us now to establish ourselves up among the top four. We’ve only finished top four three times since Alex Ferguson left.
“If we can do that again — and improve on third — that’s progress.”
Cavani is one of the players viewed as a leader by Solskjaer, who believes the striker can still have a big say in the season.
The Uruguayan, 33, is available again after serving a three-match ban for using racist language on social media.
The former Paris Saint-Germain ace has started only five matches in what has been a frustrating start to his United career.
But his manager believes the way he behaves on and off the pitch will be an example to younger players in the squad.
Solskjaer said: “You can see he is a player who has looked after himself his whole career and found out what works for him.
“He knows he is here to improve and to get ready for the game, so I really like those things you see in players who have had careers like that.”
Meanwhile, United defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah, 23, is close to joining German outfit Bayer Leverkusen in a £1.5million deal.

The club confirmed Diallo will wear the No19 shirt with ‘Amad’ on his back as he prepares to start his United career.
Diallo, who played five games for Atalanta, is heading to England hoping to make an impact in the second half of the season.
But his old mentor at childhood club Boca Barco, Denis Cerlini, has warned the ace is not ready for the Premier League just yet.
He told BBC Sport: “Physically, Amad wasn’t the strongest at Boca Barco, and his heading abilities aren’t good.

“He must add a few kilograms of weight in order to survive in the Premier League.”
Cerlini continued: “We didn’t discover Amad, but rather he just came to us. It was a great stroke of luck.
“From the very first moment, it was evident the kid was special. He was very bold and quick, possessed great technique and a strong shot, and executed everything at great speed.
“Amad was popular in the dressing room. He made a lot of friends, learned Italian and seemed to be a very determined guy who knew exactly what he wanted.”
