Dimitar Berbatov backs Solskjaer’s rejuvenated Man Utd to beat Liverpool and take charge of Premier League title race

THE last time Manchester United and Liverpool finished first and second in the Premier League, Dimitar Berbatov trudged off the pitch after a 4-1 home hammering by their rivals.
Berbatov had watched on in horror as Sir Alex Ferguson’s Red Devils were torn to shreds by Fernando Torres, Steven Gerrard and Co in the 2008-09 season.

These bitter rivals were battling it out for the title in similar circumstances to the way they meet at Anfield today, with United having a slight advantage.
But despite that heavy defeat at Old Trafford almost 12 years ago, Berbatov got the last laugh as his side went on to win the Premier League ahead of the Reds.
The ex-striker, 39, recalled: “It’s never a good feeling to lose and the feeling when you lose to a rival is even worse. It is when they score four past you…
“The dressing room was silent, thinking about the game and regretting what you’d done.

⚽ Read our Man United live blog for the latest news from Old Trafford
“The manager came in, sometimes he was yelling, and then he’d say, ‘Well, it is what it is, boys, pick your head up, shower and go home’.
“When you lose against a rival, the whole world is black for you.
“You just want to go home and think about what you’ve done wrong.

“You want the next game to come quickly to cover for your mistakes if you did some and recover from the loss. It’s a s*** feeling.

“We started well and then it all went sideways.
“We were desperate to do something, but in our desperation we made more mistakes and the other team took advantage of it.
“At the end you go into a spiral and you can’t get out of it.
“The only thing that mattered is the result and the bad taste in your mouth.
“But even though we lost the game, in the end we won the Premier League. This is the important thing.
“Even if United lose the game against Liverpool, there are still a lot of games to go and correct a loss.
“Obviously it’s better to win it, but if you lose, it’s a marathon not a sprint.”
Berbatov had mixed fortunes against Liverpool, being the only United player to score a hat-trick against them since Stan Pearson in 1946 in a 3-2 win in 2010.
He even made his debut for the Red Devils at Anfield in 2008, despite Sir Alex telling him he would have the week off following a stressful £30million deadline-day switch from Tottenham.
That was in the September of the 2008-09 season, and only one of four league losses that campaign, with Liverpool doing the double over them.

The Betfair Ambassador said: “It started funny because Sir Alex said, ‘OK, let’s go, we have a game against Liverpool’.
“I think, ‘What the f*** happened to my break that you promised me?!’
“Then in the dressing room he introduced me to Sir Bobby Charlton.
“I was thinking about the game and needed to say hi to a legend. I didn’t know what to say… I was thinking, ‘What the f*** is going on!’
“We started in a positive way for me, I had a great assist for Carlos Tevez to score a goal.
“I was thinking, ‘Here we go, we’re going to destroy them’ — and they won 2-1 in the end, but we went on to win the league.”
Berbatov believes today’s clash will be a tight, tactical affair, but that Ole Gunnar’s Solskjaer’s resurgent side can put down a huge marker with a victory.
He added: “The fact they are one and two in the league makes it even more special and an even more important game.
“It would be a psychological blow if United go and win. If they do, it’s going to be a great way of showing ‘We are back’.”

Harry Redknapp: No fans at Anfield is major boost for Man Utd in blockbuster derby clash with Liverpool

WE know football will never truly be back until the grounds are full of fans again but for Manchester United, silence is golden.
They go to Anfield to face one of their fiercest rivals looking down on Liverpool, top of the table at this stage for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson left.

Man Utd are lucky they don’t have to face the ultra-intimidating, super-passionate Liverpool fans at Anfield on Sunday, says Harry RedknappCredit: EPA

It’s always one of the biggest games of the season and the fact they’re first and second makes this one even spicier.
You can imagine what it would be like in ‘normal times’, packed to the rafters, the Kop belting out the songs and lifting their team. For visiting sides, it’s as intimidating as it gets.
Lots of Liverpool players over the years will tell you it makes them feel ten feet tall and plenty of opponents – even the most experienced – have turned to jelly.
But take away that crowd and it’s a huge loss.

⚽ Read our Man United live blog for the latest news from Old Trafford
Do you really think they’d have come back from 3-0 down against Barcelona in the Champions League that night in an empty stadium? Not a chance.
You hear the noise, look at the fans and think, “Oh my God’’.
It’s true what they say about the Kop sucking the ball into the net.

There’s no love lost between these two, for sure, so not having to cope with that crowd is a huge thing in United’s favour.
LIVERPOOL VS MAN UTD: GET 40/1 ON A PENALTY FOR EITHER TEAM

Without them it isn’t really like an away game. There isn’t that hatred and intensity you always get in this one.
And if that’s a bonus for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, so is the fact Liverpool have been so poor at the back.
Let’s be honest, they were pretty average until Jurgen Klopp sorted out the centre-back and goalkeeping problems by signing Virgil van Dijk and Alisson.
Well, Van Dijk is out, so is Joe Gomez — and Trent Alexander-Arnold is going through a bad patch.
I can see them really struggling to defend set- pieces — and you wonder who’s going to mark Harry Maguire.
He’s the best header in the country and every Liverpool fan will be holding their breath whenever United have a corner.
Maguire could actually be their biggest threat, and I do think United can get something — but the biggest certainty is that there will be goals.
Neither side is great at the back. I think the two forward lines are too good for the defences, so if this ends up goalless we’re all in trouble.
People keep saying United are in a false position, they aren’t genuine challengers, but why shouldn’t they be fighting for the title?
We’re nearly halfway through and look at the players they’ve got — men like Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba, who’s really started to play.
With no fans, it’s all a bit tepid and placid. Lots of games are almost like friendlies and the Premier League is wide open.

Man Utd will have to capitalise on there being no fans at fortress AnfieldCredit: EPA

I can see six or seven still battling it out going towards the final month. Liverpool will be up there, so will Manchester City.
Spurs are going well, Chelsea have a shout, and I wouldn’t write off Leicester.
So there’s no reason why United won’t be in the mix as well.
I’m really pleased for their manager because everyone looked at Ole and said it’s only a matter of time before he gets the elbow.
To be honest, I had serious doubts about how long he’d last and it didn’t look great for him when they were stumbling at the start of the season.
There have been some poor defeats, especially that one against Tottenham. And when they didn’t get past the Champions League group, he really looked in trouble.
But Ole has turned it round, his team are playing some great stuff again and there’s no doubt they could get a result.
Whatever happens, it should be a cracker. It’s just a shame there won’t be any fans there — although United won’t be complaining.
    LOOK-ING GOOD

Lookman is a real talent and Fulham look to have a gem in the Leipzig loanee
IF I had a quid for every time I heard a coach shouting ‘pass, pass, pass’ I could keep myself in jam roly-poly for life!
For me it’s all about ‘dribble, dribble, dribble’ — players taking on defenders, the winger running at a full-back and causing havoc.
That’s why it was so good to see Ademola Lookman have such an impact for Fulham in their draw at Tottenham on Wednesday.
Lookman is a dying breed, someone who can beat people and change a game — and he certainly did that.
I loved watching him at Charlton but for some reason it didn’t work out at Everton and he ended up at Leipzig.
Now, in boss Scott Parker, he’s got someone who believes in him again. And with a talent like Lookman, Fulham will always have a chance.
    RY WOULD HE DO THAT?

It’s rubbish to think Ryan Fraser deliberately got himself sent off vs Sheff UtdCredit: AP:Associated Press
I’VE heard some rubbish in my time but the suggestion Ryan Fraser got himself sent off deliberately at Sheffield United this week is as stupid as it gets.
The rest of the Newcastle team would have beaten up Fraser if he’d done it on purpose.
And in my book, anyone who doesn’t get on with Steve Bruce shouldn’t be playing the game.
Brucey is a great guy, a fantastic competitor and a top manager.
So I’m just not having it that he’s lost the dressing room.
The fact Newcastle are struggling is, for me, simpler than that — he has a bunch of average players who don’t look capable.
It doesn’t take a genius to work that one out.

Jamie Carragher selects just THREE Man Utd players in combined XI with Liverpool ahead of crunch title clash

JAMIE CARRAGHER has picked his Liverpool and Manchester United combined XI – with just THREE Red Devils stars making the cut.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad head to Anfield on Sunday for a monumental, top-of-the-table showdown with the reigning champions.

Jamie Carragher’s Liverpool-Man Utd combined XI features just three Red Devils stars

Despite sitting three points clear of the Reds in first place, Carragher reckons just THREE United stars would make a combined XI of the North-West giants.
Starting at the back, just one United defender makes the back-four and goalkeeper.
Harry Maguire joins Fabinho in the heart of defence, with Alisson in goal behind Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson in the full-back slots.
⚽ Read our Man United live blog for the latest news from Old Trafford

Explaining his logic, Carragher told Sky Sports: “Liverpool at this moment have the edge on Manchester United, so they would always dominate these teams.
“A few years ago, David De Gea would have been straight in, but that is the role of Alisson right now.
“The big decision for me was at centre-back, Harry Maguire has a really tough time at the start of the season.
“But I have really admired the way he’s come out of that with the performances he has shown. That’s a testament to his mentality.

“Fabinho is not a centre-back, so United supporters may argue for Victor Lindelof or Eric Bailly.

Carragher named EIGHT Liverpool stars in his combined XICredit: Reuters

“But Fabinho has been Liverpool’s best player this season at centre-back. He’s looked like a centre-back, so there is no doubt there.”
Further up the pitch, ex-Reds defender Carragher opted for Thiago and Jordan Henderson in the two deeper midfield slots.
The Liverpool duo beat the likes of Paul Pogba, Donny van de Beek, Scott McTominay, Nemanja Matic and Fred from United, as well as Georginio Wijnaldum and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from the Reds.
Bruno Fernandes starts in his favoured No10 position, with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane joined by Marcus Rashford in attack.
Carra continued: “Bruno Fernandes is a shoo-in; he’s been one of the stars of the Premier League this season.
“I also had to have Marcus Rashford in the team.
“Was I going to leave Mohamed Salah or Sadio Mane out? No, they are two of the first picks in there.
“I love Roberto Firmino, but I am a huge admirer of Rashford and had to find a position for him, and those three are the best attacking players at both clubs.”

Man Utd star Marcus Rashford reveals Jose Mourinho made them ‘savvier’ at winning penalties

JOSE MOURINHO made Manchester United ‘savvier’ in the art of winning penalties.
United have been awarded an incredible 42 spot-kicks since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took charge of the club in December 2018.

But Marcus Rashford has revealed it was his predecessor Mourinho, now the boss at Tottenham, who did the groundwork to make sure any fouls lead to awards.
Rashford, 23, said: “I remember when Jose was manager, there were five or six times where I should have had a penalty.
“Jose ended up saying to me ‘If you are not savvy about the way you do it, then you are not going to get it’
“After that, we started to get a few penalties. It was something in terms of development, you have to learn that and understand it.”

⚽ Read our Man United live blog for the latest news from Old Trafford
The number of penalties has led to criticism from opposing managers, including Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp and Chelsea’s Frank Lampard.
But Rashford insists nobody is diving and it is just the frequency of United’s drives into the box that is leading to fouls from opponents.
He said: “As a forward line, we want to go and score goals.

“When you are making runs in behind or dribbling with the ball and if you see a challenge coming, you don’t want to get tackled because you are looking at an opportunity to score a goal.

“There is no way you are going to let somebody take the ball off you.
“So for me it is just a case of us wanting to score goals and the teams wanting to defend goals and penalties can happen.”
The England international used to share the penalty-taking duties with Paul Pogba before Bruno Fernandes arrived 12 months ago.
The 26-year-old Portuguese midfielder has since scored 15 penalties for United.
Rashford will not mind if it is a Fernandes penalty that wins the day when United travel to Anfield on Sunday for the top-of-the-table clash with the current champions.
Having grown up at United, he is steeped in the history of these titanic fixtures and would love to get a goal himself.
Rash has scored three times in eight games against the Red Devils’ bitter enemy – but is yet to find the net at Anfield.
He added: “As a kid from Manchester that supports United, there is no bigger game to score goals in.
“It is definitely a game I am looking forward to, like the rest of the squad.”

Man Utd’s ability to win penalties has irked the likes of Klopp and LampardCredit: AFP or licensors
Rashford’s most memorable clash with Liverpool came in March 2018 when he scored both goals – in the 14th and 24th minutes – in a 2-1 win.
But he has the Kop’s James Milner to thank for actually being able to finish the game after clattering him in the 28th minute.
The United icon said: “I was just emotionally into the game and I made a tackle and lucky it was on James, as he is not one to roll around on the floor! He just bounced back up.
“It was just a yellow card – on another day it could have been a red card.
“They are the moments you have to learn from and I had the right players around me who made me just get on with the game.”
Rashford also believes United’s failures in the past year – including losing four semi-finals – have brought out leaders in the dressing room.
They have been dumped out of the Carabao Cup twice, the FA Cup and Europa League.
He added: “There are things which have happened where if you don’t come out and be a leader – someone the squad can look to in difficult moments – then it will continue.
“We are more ready now than we were two years ago in terms of leaders on the pitch and ready to fight for trophies.”

Odion Ighalo ‘set to leave Man Utd this month’ but striker insists he wants to extend loan transfer

ODION IGHALO is set to leave Manchester United this month, but the striker has revealed he is desperate to extend his loan at the club.
The Nigerian, 31, has played just four times this season – with just one of those coming in the Premier League – after his loan from Shanghai Shenhua was extended.

Ighalo has slipped further down Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s pecking order thanks to Edinson Cavani’s summer arrival.
And while the ex-Watford ace has admitted he wants to stay at Old Trafford, he’s aware his time could be coming to an end.
Ighalo told ESPN: “Today, I’m in Manchester but at the end of the month I don’t know where I’m going to be.
“If it’s possible I’d like to stay here but if not I have to go.

“I have options. I wait for my agent. He is doing his job and I’m doing mine.
“At the end of the month, we have to decide what is best and we’ll take it.”
Should Ighalo be pushed out, he’s revealed he would love the chance to try his hand in the MLS.

He continued: “If it’s possible I’d like to play in MLS but I have to wait to see if it’s possible.

“The league is doing well and if the opportunity arises then I’d grab it with two hands.”
Despite featuring just once in the league, Ighalo has revealed he is still keeping his head down and training hard rather than kicking up a fuss.
    The Nigerian continued: “I’m a professional, I don’t make trouble and I don’t complain.
“I just go to training and give my best.
“Lately I haven’t been playing much but it’s the coach’s decision.
“If I’m not in the team and give them 100 per cent support.
“The team is doing well and that’s the most important thing.”

Man Utd will finish third behind Liverpool and Man City as they only have one player who can carry them, says Riise

LIVERPOOL legend John Arne Riise believes Manchester United will finish no higher than third this season as he stated they are too reliant on Bruno Fernandes.
The Red Devils sit top of the table after 17 games played ahead of their trip to Anfield on Sunday – three points above Jurgen Klopp’s men.

And while Riise, 40, has praised Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for turning things around at Old Trafford, he has stated that the club will come up short in their bid to win the Premier League for the first time since 2013.
Speaking exclusively to Ladbrokes at its launch of the 5-A-Side Bet on Liverpool v Man United, he said: “I think at the moment I can only see a title race between three teams: Liverpool, Man City and Man United.
“When it comes to the end of the season I think it’ll be between Liverpool and City; I don’t think United will be able to keep up their current form.
“I might be wrong; I like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer because he’s from Norway and we will always support our own people – it’s just a shame he’s managing the wrong team!

“I’ve been very impressed with what Solskjaer has done this season and how he’s turned things around after the stick he’s had from the fans and the media.
“He’s stuck at it, they’re top of the league and to be honest I think they deserve to be there because of the way they’ve played.”
Before adding: “In my opinion I think Liverpool should be favourites to win the league, not Man City. I also thought at one stage that Chelsea might have been up there.
“They had a good start to the season but they’re losing too many games and are lacking in consistency.

“For a neutral football fan, it must be great to watch a league like this when it’s so tight. You never know who is going to finish in the top four, or even the top six!
“Liverpool and Man City are going to be up there, and then Man United will probably be in third place.”
Riise then suggested that United will struggle if Fernandes ever picks up an injury with the playmaker chipping in with 11 goals and seven assist in 17 games this term.
He said: “Man United are very reliant on Bruno Fernandes, though. If he’s out for any reason this season, they’ll struggle.
“That’s why I don’t think United will be up there in May, because they’re too dependent on that one player.
“Man City and Liverpool have so many players who can carry the team; Man United only have one.”

Barcelona REJECTED chance to link up Cristiano Ronaldo with Lionel Messi for just £15million before Man Utd transfer

CRISTIANO RONALDO and Lionel Messi are sworn rivals, destined to divide fans in their fight to be considered football’s greatest of all time forever.
But it could have been so different, with Barcelona REJECTING the chance to sign Ronaldo and pair him with Messi for just £15million in 2003.

That summer, the Portuguese star was on the brink of leaving Sporting Lisbon after a rapid rise to prominence.
Of course, Ronaldo ultimately joined Manchester United and shot to superstardom before moving to Real Madrid six years later.
But now, Barcelona presidential candidate Joan Laporta has revealed he turned down the chance to bring Ronaldo to the Nou Camp in a deal that could have changed the face of the sport forever.
Laporta – president at the time – claimed he has ‘no regrets’, saying it was between Ronaldo and Ronaldinho, with Barca opting for the established Brazilian star.

Looking back on that fateful decision 18 years ago, Laporta told Iniestazo: “We were about to sign Ronaldinho and Rafa Marquez.
“Marquez’s people proposed Cristiano Ronaldo to us. He was at Sporting at the time.
“One of his agents said that they had a player who they had sold to [Manchester] United for €19m, but they’d sell him to us for €17m.
“But we had already invested in Ronaldinho at the time. Cristiano played more out wide than in the centre.

Barcelona would go on to enjoy huge success with Ronaldinho, winning two LaLiga crowns and one Champions League title during his five-year stay.
The Brazilian also won the Ballon d’Or during his time at the Nou Camp, in 2005.
Rather than link up with Messi, Ronaldo headed to Old Trafford – where he would three Premier League crowns and one Champions League.
He too won a Ballon d’Or at his new club, taking home the first of his five FIVE awards in 2008.
After quitting Man Utd in 2009, Ronaldo would go on to terrorise Barca while playing for their fiercest rivals, Real Madrid.
In nine years at the Bernabeu, he won two LaLiga crowns and a staggering FOUR Champions League crowns before joining Juventus for £99m in 2018.

Diallo – who will wear the No19 shirt at the Theatre of Dreams – was shown around United’s training facilities on Wednesday, before conducting an interview for the club.
Speaking recently, the Ivory Coast-born forward revealed it is a ‘dream come true’ to link up with United who agreed to sign him on deadline day in October.
He told United’s website: “After waiting since the summer, it is finally a dream come true to complete my move to Manchester United.
“I am hugely ambitious and there is so much that I want to achieve in the game; when I spoke to the manager I knew that I had joined the perfect club.

“This is a really exciting squad with so many great players, I can promise that I will work hard every day to learn from them and give everything to develop my game.
“The coaches have been fantastic since I signed, we have been in touch regularly and they have already given me a lot of great advice.
“I have had time to prepare for this move, both physically and mentally, and I have worked really hard to be ready to make the step up to this amazing club.”
United legend Rio Ferdinand has tipped the winger to become a world beater’ as he compared him to Cristiano Ronaldo.

He said on Rio Ferdinand Presents FIVE: “We’ve just bought a kid in from Atalanta and hopefully he does something.
“If you see his clips and speak to people at the club who are involved in buying him, potentially this kid could be a world beater.
“That is the thought of Manchester United people that this kid is one they have unearthed.”
He added: “I don’t want to put the pressure of Ronaldo on him, but no-one knew about Ronaldo when we bought him other than the people in Portugal.
“This kid seems similar in that sense and if you see his clips and the way people talk about him, the world is his oyster if he applies himself right.”
