Man Utd boss Solskjaer confirms Edinson Cavani contract talks ‘in near future’ with striker’s deal up at end of season

The Uruguayan striker, 34, joined United on a free transfer after his contract at Paris Saint-Germain expired.

Cavani signed a one-year deal with the option for a further 12 months.
But after quickly becoming first choice centre-forward at Old Trafford, Solskjaer has confirmed he wants to tie Cavani down to a new deal.
The Man Utd boss revealed: “I can only say Edinson has done well.
“I’ve been impressed by him, he’s really gelled in the group.

“We’ll sit down and speak with him in the near future to see his plans and our plans.
“It’s a good discussion to have. We always speak to the players.
“And, with his contract situation at the moment, we’re very pleased with what he’s done.”
Despite impressing at United since his move last summer – scoring seven times in 24 games – Cavani has already been linked with a move away.

BETS OF THE DAY: DON’T MISS TODAY’S BEST ODDS BOOSTS

The ex-PSG striker has been tipped to join Marcos Rojo in Argentina at Boca Juniors.
But Mason Greenwood will be one hoping Cavani extends his stay in England.
Earlier this week, the whizkid revealed he was furthering his football education with Cavani in the team having first learned about the beautiful game from Brazil legend Ronaldo.
Greenwood told BT Sport: “Obviously [Cavani] doesn’t speak the same language.
“But you can just tell, the way he plays the way he trains, you already know he is setting the example.
“You can either watch him, or don’t pay attention. So I always pay attention, watch him, the way he finishes the way he does the runs and stuff.
“He does tell me, the runs to make in the box, he’s probably scored 300 goals doing the same movement in the box over and over again.
“It’s good to have him around the club and to watch and learn from him.”

Football’s next 10 ‘Galacticos’ including Man Utd star Marcus Rashford, Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe

IF Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi were musicians, they’d be entering their ‘Greatest Hits’ era with a new wave of talent knocking them off the top of the charts.
This week of Champions League alone has proven that, with the two giants of the global game for the past two decades overshadowed by a pair of rising superstars.

This week’s Champions League action has suggested the new wave of talent is fainlly overtaking Messi and RonaldoCredit: AP:Associated Press

Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland are quickly becoming the best players on the planet.
And football fans can’t wait to watch them trade blows like predecessors Messi, 33, and Ronaldo, 36, for the next decade or more.
But Spanish publication AS reckon there are more than just two players to watch in the coming decade.
In fact, they’ve listed their top TEN ‘Galacticos’ to keep tabs on… check out who they picked below.

    KYLIAN MBAPPE

Kylian Mbappe scored a hat-trick as PSG thumped Messi’s Barcelona 4-1 in the Champions League this weekCredit: AP:Associated Press
    Age: 22
    Club: PSG
    Nationality: French
AGED just 22, Mbappe is already Paris Saint-Germain’s third-top-scorer of all-time, a World Cup winner and the second-most-expensive player of all-time.

That’s some CV for such a young player, but the Frenchman certainly deserves all the hype.
Real Madrid are expected to make a mega-money move for Mbappe this summer, with the likes of Liverpool also interested.
If not for the coronavirus pandemic, Mbappe would certainly have become the first £200million-plus player.
    ERLING HAALAND

    Age: 20
    Club: Borussia Dortmund
    Nationality: Norwegian
ARGUABLY the biggest threat to Mbappe in his future quest for ‘GOAT’ status is Dortmund striker Haaland.
The Norwegian ace has scored 18 Champions League goals in just 13 matches and claimed he was spurred on to score against Sevilla in the tournament this week after watching Mbappe’s Barcelona hat-trick.
Haaland scored twice in a 3-2 win away.
Only 20 years old, Haaland is believed to have a clause in his contract allowing him to join Real Madrid for just £63m in 2022.
But Barcelona are threatening to make a big-money move this summer in order to beat their rivals to the punch.
Just imagine Mbappe and Haaland on the same team, though… game over.

    Nationality: England
LAST season, Sancho – an Under-17 World Cup winner with England – was involved in 34 goals in just 32 Bundesliga games, with 17 goals and 17 assists.
While 2020-21 has been trickier for the winger, in part due to his failed move to Manchester United last summer, Sancho has still been involved in 23 goals in all competitions this season.
At the age of 20, Sancho will surely only get better and is tipped to be a huge part of a new ‘Golden Generation’ for England.

IN the summer of 2019, Atletico Madrid finally lost Antoine Griezmann after Barcelona came knocking.
Diego Simeone – recently named Coach of the Last Decade – paid a staggering £112m to bring Felix to the Wanda Metropolitano following a red-hot spell at Benfica.
Felix found life in LaLiga tough to begin with but is now looking like to the heir to Ronaldos’ throne in the Portugal team and Griezmann’s at Atleti.

ESPECIALLY with Messi set to quit Barca and seemingly move to Manchester City or PSG, now more than ever Fati is the future of the Nou Camp giants.
Before his horror knee injury, Fati was outshining Messi for his club and starring for the Spain national team.
Fati is expected to become one of the best players in the world for the next 15 years… after all, he’s still only 18.
    MARCUS RASHFORD

HOW different could things have been had Anthony Martial not injured himself in the warm-up to Man Utd’s Europa League last-32 clash with Midtjylland in February 2016.
Rashford scored twice after being roped in to lead United’s injury-hit front-line in a 5-1 win and he’s never looked back.
The forward is now considered as the future of both Man Utd and England.
Still years away from hitting his prime, there’s plenty to look forward to.
Rashford also leads off the pitch, earning an MBE in 2020 for his fight against food poverty.
    ALPHONSO DAVIES

    Age: 20
    Club: Bayern Munich
    Nationality: Canadian
LIGHTNING-quick, strong in the tackle and with an eye for goal, the Bayern Munich left-back could play anywhere on the pitch.
Already quite possibly the best player ever to come out of Canada, Davies appears to have a long future ahead of him.
The former Vancouver Whitecaps whiz has already won two Bundesliga titles and the Champions League – as well as helping his side win the Club World Cup earlier this month.
    LAUTARO MARTINEZ

    Nationality: Argentine
THE Inter ace had looked set for a mega-money move to Barcelona last summer but for Covid to hit the Spanish giants hard in the pocket.
Fortunately for Martinez, that’s helped him further his lethal partnership with Romelu Lukaku at the San Siro.
Martinez is already an undisputed starter up front for Argentina, too – with his strong all-around game a huge asset to any team.
    PHIL FODEN

FODEN is finally getting the minutes he deserves under Pep Guardiola – and boy has he justified them.
The versatile midfielder, still only 20, has helped Man City to a record 17-game winning streak, scoring 11 goals and adding a further six assists this season alone.
Along with the likes of Jack Grealish, Declan Rice, Mason Mount, Sancho and Rashford, Foden is considered arguably the main man in England’s latest generation of potential superstars.
    FERRAN TORRES

ANOTHER 20-year-old City star, Foden’s club-mate Torres has enjoyed a superb season.
The Spaniard has scored 12 times in 31 games in all competitions.
A bargain £20.8m buy from Valencia, the signing of Torres has already proven a more-than shrewd on.
Still early in his career, Guardiola and Co will be keen to see if he can keep up his meteoric rise to stardom.

Man Utd wages revealed as Solskjaer tells his stars they are paid enough to cope with relentless fixture schedule

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER wants no excuses and no moaning from his highly-paid Manchester United stars about the relentless run of fixtures.
United have reached the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup, are still in the FA Cup and, having been knocked out of the Champions League, have two extra games to play in the Europa League if they go all the way.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has told his Man Utd stars they earn enough to cope with the packed scheduleCredit: Getty Images – Getty

They have played 40 matches already this season and it’s just the middle of February.
But if any of his highly-paid stars even think about grumbling they will have the boss to answer to.
David De Gea tops the list, raking in £375,000 per week – totalling £19.5million a year.
In fact, 14 first-team players all earn £100,000 or more per week, with Paul Pogba (£290k), Anthony Martial (£250k), Edinson Cavani (£210k) and Marcus Rashford (£200k) all earning £200,00 or more weekly.

And Solskjaer said: “Of course it’s relentless and we demand we turn up every game and earn the right to win.
“You’ve got to run more than the opposition, you’ve got to want to win more than the opposition, you’ve got to suffer more than the opposition, you’ve got to put your body on the line.
“Every game in the Premier League is high demand and that’s why the players are paid the money they are to perform every time they’re asked to.
“We ask for relentlessness and attitude every single game.”

They certainly got that on Thursday night in Turin as they put on a superb performance in beating Real Sociedad 4-0 in the first-leg of their last-32 Europa League clash.
After a stutter in the league that has seen a title tilt turn into a battle to stay in the top four, it was a game Solskjaer believes has given his team their X-factor back.
Solskjaer said: “We can’t hide the fact we’ve dropped off our form a bit.
“We dropped points against Everton, Sheffield United, West Brom, points that we feel we deserved more and we should have got more.
“The game against Real Sociedad was about finding ourselves and getting the X-factor back in, the brightness and the focus, so Newcastle will be a very important game for us definitely.”
Even with Newcastle’s current travails, Solskjaer admits he will be facing very different problems than La Real posed him.
The Spanish side were totally open as they took the game to them whereas Newcastle will most likely sit deep with everyone behind the ball, something Solskjaer’s team can find hard to break down.
He said: “It’s about learning from every game. So the last game for example when West Brom dropped deep that wasn’t good enough from us.
“Against Real Sociedad when we knew about the spaces we found them.
“Newcastle will give us different spaces than we got in that game so of course we have to play the game correctly.
“But it’s also about quality when you create chances, when you take that last pass or last cross and it’s about getting better and improving all the time.”

While United have dropped nine points in their last five league games it is still only one defeat in 18 in the league.
That’s a very good run in itself but obviously overshadowed by Manchester City’s incredible form that has them ten points clear at the top of the table.
But with 14 games to go, second-placed Solskjaer, unlike the manager of defending champions Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp, refuses to throw in the towel.
He said: “I don’t think anyone would say they’re not going to go for it.
“We’re going to go for a win every single game we play, of course we are.
“But, whatever other teams do, City, Liverpool, Leicester, Chelsea, Tottenham, whoever, West Brom, we can’t control.
“We just have to control ourselves, we are in the position we are, we’re second and of course your ambition then is to not end any lower than that.
“We’re going to have to get a good run together too if we’re going to put pressure on City and that should start on Sunday of course.”

How Man Utd could line-up against Newcastle with Scott McTominay huge doubt after injury scare and Dan James impressing

MANCHESTER UNITED may be without Scott McTominay for their clash against Newcastle on Sunday after he went off injured against Real Sociedad.
The 24-year-old was taken off on the hour mark against the LaLiga outfit during their 4-0 win on Thursday night in the Europa League.

This is how Manchester United could line-up against Newcastle on Sunday

The Red Devils have since confirmed on their website that the Scotland international is a doubt to face the Magpies at Old Trafford.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to make a number of changes for the clash with United failing to win their last two Premier League games.
Failure to beat Steve Bruce’s men could see the club drop out of the top two if Leicester beat Aston Villa on Sunday.
With a lot at stake, David De Gea could be recalled to the starting XI ahead of Dean Henderson after the Englishman got the nod to face Real Sociedad in Turin.

Another change Solskjaer could make is to bring Luke Shaw back into the team with the left-back providing four assists in his last three top-flight outings.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka will once again start at right-back, and Eric Bailly could partner Harry Maguire in central defence after keeping a clean sheet against Sociedad.
With McTominay to potentially miss out on facing Newcastle, Serbia international Nemanja Matic could be drafted in.
Paul Pogba is still out with a thigh injury and Donny van de Beek is unlikely to start after being left out of the squad to face Sociedad due to injury.

Matic could partner Brazilian ace Fred in the middle of the pitch, with Bruno Fernandes yet again to feature in an advanced role.
Despite impressing against their Spanish opponents on Thursday, winger Daniel James is likely to find himself starting from the bench.
Mason Greenwood could be shifted from centre-forward to right winger ahead of James, with Marcus Rashford to be deployed on the opposite flank.
With Edinson Cavani another injury doubt after missing the Europa League Round of 32 first leg, Anthony Martial could be tasked with leading the line.

Man Utd in Jadon Sancho transfer boost as Dortmund would rather sell £104m England star than Erling Haaland this summer

MANCHESTER UNITED have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Jadon Sancho with Borussia Dortmund reportedly open to selling the winger in the summer.
The 20-year-old has once again impressed this term for BVB – chipping in with nine goals and 14 assists in 28 games in all competitions.

And having failed to lure the player to Old Trafford last campaign, the Red Devils are understood to have retained their interest in the England international.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has also let it be known that he is keeping tabs on Sancho’s Dortmund team-mate Erling Haaland.
But according to Bild, the Bundesliga outfit are desperate to keep hold of the Norwegian striker beyond this year.
That is despite the Norwegian striker being available for just £65million in 2022 due to a clause in his contract.

Instead of cashing in on the ex-Red Bull Salzburg marksman, the German news outlet states Dortmund would rather sell Sancho at the end of the season instead of Haaland.
They state that they are willing to part ways with the former Manchester City youth star if they receive a fee in the region of £104million.
It was claimed last week that Sancho’s exit from Signal Iduna Park was ‘set in stone’.
He could be one of eight players that could be offloaded by Dortmund as they look to recoup their losses caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Other squad members that face an uncertain future include Axel Witsel, Manuel Akanji, Mahmoud Dahoud, Giovanni Reyna and Raphael Guerreiro.
Commenting on the potential signing of Sancho, United icon Dimitar Berbatov has declared his former employers should stay clear of the player.
He told Betfair: “I have read more rumours about Jadon Sancho at Dortmund and how United could sign him. So, you sign Sancho and where do you play him?
“They will have lots of games in the Europa League and FA Cup, but then what happens to people like Donny Van de Beek.
“It would be Van de Beek two if they sign him. Yes, he is a great player but then do you just have too much talent.”
Before adding: “If Sancho signed for another team or a rival it wouldn’t be a blow. Sir Alex Ferguson got rid of players because no-one is bigger than the club, they were replaced.
“That’s still the case, no one is bigger than Manchester United, so, I’m not expecting anything to happen.”

Man Utd eye shock transfer for Eintracht Frankfurt striker Andre Silva if they fail to land Dortmund star Erling Haaland

MANCHESTER UNITED have reportedly identified Eintracht Frankfurt striker Andre Silva as an alternative to Borussia Dortmund ace Erling Haaland.
Despite losing out on signing the Norwegian marksman to Dortmund last year, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer recently admitted that he is still ‘following’ the player in Germany.

But it appears the Red Devils are keeping tabs on another player in the Bundesliga ahead of a possible summer move.
According to Sky Germany, the 25-year-old is being chased by United with the club impressed by his goalscoring exploits since joining Frankfurt in 2019.
Portugal international Silva banged in 16 goals in all competitions last term.
And he has already scored more this season, chipping in with 19 goals and five assists in 22 outings.

It has been claimed that Frankfurt are seeking a fee in the region of £26million for their talisman, who is tied down at the club until 2023.
However, the news report states that United face competition from Atletico Madrid in the hunt to secure his services.
United are also rumoured to be interested in another Bundesliga star as they weigh up an offer for Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman.
Reports suggest that the Premier League giants could offer the French forward a lucrative £260,000-a-week contract at Old Trafford to tempt him into joining.

Another player that has been linked with a move to the Theatre of Dreams is PAOK forward Christos Tzolis.
The Greek starlet, 19, is said to be on United’s radar after banging in 15 goals in 33 matches.

Marcus Rashford named in Time magazine’s The Next 100 Influential People after Man Utd star’s incredible charity work

MARCUS RASHFORD will grace the front cover of Time magazine’s March edition after being named among the ‘Next 100 Most Influential People’.
The Manchester United star was awarded an MBE for his sterling efforts in forcing the government into providing free school meals for kids in need.

And now the 23-year-old will follow in the foosteps of sporting royalty such as Lionel Messi, LeBron James and Roger Federer by gracing the cover of the famous mag.
But his influence is as much, if not more, linked to matters away from sport than in it.
Rashford campaigned for the government to ensure no child went hungry during the school holidays – forcing them into a very public U-turn.
And in June last year Boris Johnson phoned the footballer to personally promise that food would be delivered to those in need during the Christmas, Easter and summer holidays.

Rashford described it as ‘the greatest moment of my life’ – there was even a mural painted of him in Manchester to recognise his efforts.
The England striker’s intro to Time Magazine’s next top 100 was penned by fellow trailblazer Lewis Hamilton.
The seven-time Formula One world champ and anti-racism campaigner wrote: “In 2020, Marcus Rashford took his many talents beyond the football field—where he is a star player for Manchester United and England’s national team—to respond to a national crisis: child hunger.

“‘I know what it feels like to be hungry,’ he wrote last June as part of a campaign that succeeded in pushing the government to provide meals for students in need during summer vacation.

“By standing up for the most vulnerable in our society, and using his platform and influence to create positive change, Marcus inspired countless others to join him on this mission and cemented his status as a role model.
“In a year that showed us the power of working together toward a common goal, he was a galvanizing force behind uniting people across the UK in the effort to ensure that no child goes hungry.
“His determination, resilience and persistence have been truly inspiring. I cannot wait to see how he continues this important work.”

Rashford has previously spoken how hearing his mum cry at night as she struggled to provide for her family is what inspired him to help feed starving children during lockdown.
The England and Manchester United striker said his mum never got help and that is what ‘drives him’ to help feed other families.
As well as his sensational work off the pitch, Rashford has nailed down a regular starting spot at his boyhood club United and has been capped 40 times for England.
And he is currently leading the fight against social media abuse of players and officials.
His speaking out over this has been heralded by many, including United legend and Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville who called him ‘brave’.

Man Utd legend Rio Ferdinand reveals he tortures himself thinking about football failures despite trophy-laden career

RIO FERDINAND has revealed he constantly tortures himself thinking about football moments that cost him trophies – and even still spoils his holidays doing it.
The 42-year-old – who won 14 trophies during his time at Manchester United – has stated rather than recalling his successes with pride, he feels dissatisfied with his career.

And he can’t stop beating himself up over the big achievements that got away – even while sitting on an idyllic beach.
He said: “If you ask me what I think about more, I’ve spent more time in retirement thinking about what we lost and didn’t win than what we won, which is so weird, but I can’t help it.
“You can be sitting having the best day on a beach somewhere in an idyllic place and all of a sudden something shoots into your mind, like the FA Cup final, [Didier] Drogba.”
Didier Drogba scored the cup final extra-time winner for Chelsea against the Red Devils in 2007 – although there was no direct Ferdinand mistake to blame.

Rio added: “It’s just mad. It just ruins your next fifteen minutes and you’re just sitting there and you need to snap yourself out of it.
“I just think that competitive energy is always bubbling under somewhere. It’s difficult.
“As much as I did win and was successful in my career, even for instance with England it was disappointing in the end.
“Everyone called us the golden generation of players with [David Beckham], Michael Owen and [Paul] Scholes.
