Man Utd’s shocking 2021 slump has seen rampant neighbours City leapfrog them with massive 18-POINT gain since New Year

IT’S really been a tale of two Cities this season.
Between the start of 2020-21 to New Year’s Day, Pep Guardiola’s squad had picked up just 26 points from their opening 14 games.

Man City boast a 100 per cent record in 2021 after a tricky start to the season, with United sliding in the other direction

Simply put, their season was looking bleak with reigning champions Liverpool seven points clear of them and rivals Manchester United four points ahead in second.
But since the turn of the New Year, Manchester City have been utterly rampant. Unstoppable, in fact.
Incredibly, Guardiola and Co have won ALL 13 of their Premier League games since January 1, picking up a maximum available 39 points.
For context, West Ham have picked up the second-highest points tally in 2021… with just 22 from their ten games.

Man Utd, meanwhile, have earned just 21 points from 12 matches – a mere 1.75 points per game.
That has seen City move from four points behind to a staggering 14 points ahead – an 18-POINT swing.
Mentally, United may even feel the swing is greater than that.
Having been four ahead in the 2020 portion of the season to 18 behind in 2021, it could even feel more like 22 points as they struggle to save their title race.

United have slipped 14 points behind City after 27 games having been four ahead on New Year’s Day – an 18-point swing

The two clubs go head-to-head in an eagerly-anticipated Manchester derby this weekend.
Ahead of the game at the Etihad, City also leapfrogged United as the league’s top scorers following a 4-1 win win over Wolves – their 21st consecutive win in all competitions.
On top of that, City have maintained their record of having easily the tightest defence in the top-flight, having conceded just 17 goals from their 27 games.
Chelsea have the second-best defence in the Premier League, despite having shipped EIGHT more goals than City.
Man Utd have certainly been hampered by their struggles against Big Six clubs this year.
They’ve scored just ONE goal in seven games against their rivals – and that was in the 6-1 humiliation at the hands of Tottenham.
United go into the game at City having failed to score in their last three games too, having been held to goalless draws against Real Sociedad, Chelsea and, most-recently, Crystal Palace.

Man Utd star De Gea ‘given time off to be with wife Edurne Garcia for birth of first child’ with Henderson stepping in

DEAN HENDERSON is set to start the next five games for Manchester United with David De Gea out for a month due to personal reasons.
The Red Devils shot-stopper was omitted from the matchday squad that drew 0-0 against Crystal Palace on Wednesday due to a private matter.

Commenting on the ex-Atletico Madrid ace after the clash at Selhurst Park, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: “That’s a private matter. [His return] will take the time it takes.”
According to the Manchester Evening News, Henderson was told prior to the fixture in South London to prepare for potentially starting the next six games.
They claim that De Gea may not be in action for the rest of the month, meaning Henderson could be between the sticks for crucial games.
The Daily Mail have since stated that De Gea’s absence is due to him being given time off to be with his wife Edurne who is expecting their first child.

They have reported that De Gea is in Spain to be with his family after Solskjaer allowed him to go, despite the goalkeeper willing to play.
His partner Edurne – a famous Spanish pop star – labelled Manchester as ‘uglier than the back of a fridge’ in 2016.
Henderson is now likely to start against rivals Manchester City on Sunday, before lining up against AC Milan in the Europa League Round of 16 first leg.
He then could be named in the starting XI in the Premier League match against West Ham, before United’s second leg tie against Milan.

BET OF THE DAY: GET GARETH BALE TO SCORE OR ASSIST AGAINST FULHAM TONIGHT AT 40/1

Finishing off the month, the former Sheffield United loanee could be involved in the FA Cup quarter-final against Leicester before the international break.
Henderson has appeared in 14 games in all competitions this campaign for United – keeping nine clean sheets.
And club legend Gary Neville believes De Gea could find himself out of the team to make way for Henderson.
Asked by a fan whether he thinks the Spaniard’s time is up at Old Trafford, Neville remarked: “A big decision is coming soon.”
Solskjaer was full of praise for Henderson as he earned United a point against Palace after denying Patrick van Aanholt late on.
He said: “I thank him for one point and not zero.”
Before adding: “Dean is ready if he’s called upon, you saw that. He kept his concentration.
“I think maybe it would have been called offside [against Van Aanholt] but at the moment I thought that Dean saved us a point because it looked like that was a deciding moment and that was probably the biggest chance of the game, apart from Marcus [Rashford] in the first-half.”

Man Utd player ratings: Bruno Fernandes finally looking jaded, Cavani laboured as Luke Shaw is best attacking threat

MANCHESTER UNITED laboured to a dour point against Crystal Palace with a worrying display just days before their big derby clash.
Bruno Fernandes looked jaded all night and Edinson Cavani short of confidence on a poor night in London for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with a 0-0 draw.

Bruno Fernandes looked like he needed a rest – but he won’t get one with Manchester City up nextCredit: Rex Features

They might reflect on a point gained after such a frustrating display.
Here, SunSport’s John Hutchinson rates how United players fared on their trip to Selhurst Park.
    Dean Henderson – 6/10
With David De Gea missing for ‘personal reasons’ it was another chance for the England youngster to impress.
But he hardly had chance as Palace offered next to nothing up top – apart from a stunning save to deny Patrick van Aanholt at the death that earned thanks from his manager.

    Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 6
Was probably the first United player to try and dribble at an opponent – that came five minutes before half-time.
But surprisingly subdued showing against his former club.

Luke Shaw was United’s best player – and not for the first time this seasonCredit: Getty Images – Getty

    Eric Bailly – 6
Preferred at the back to Victor Lindelof – probably what many United fans want to see.
Was a comfortable game to come in for with Benteke cumbersome as usual.

    Harry Maguire – 6
Must have fancied playing further up field so poor were his team-mates ahead of him.
Would have been annoyed at not seeing some decent balls in at attacking set-pieces.

    Luke Shaw – 8
Found himself in acres of space in the early stages but couldn’t quite pick out his man in the area.
Was United’s best attacking threat all game – that says a lot about the rest.
    Fred – 5
Would imagine he prefers a different midfield partner than Matic – they often ran into the same spaces.
Buzzed around, but that’s about it. Subbed off.
    Nemanja Matic – 6
McTominay was given a rest that saw experienced Serbian Matic come in.
Marshalled the midfield well enough and was denied a potential goal with a fine save from his 25 yarder.

    Mason Greenwood – 5
Back in the first-team fold, but he will have to show a lot more than he did in the first 45 minutes as he barely looked interested in making the runs.
Finally showed some enthusiasm nine minutes from time when he cut in and fired a rasping drive just over.
    Bruno Fernandes – 4
Anonymous in the first half, despite United enjoying decent spells of possession.
Didn’t get much better in the second 45, worrying ahead of going to the Etihad at the weekend.
    Marcus Rashford – 5
Looked lively for about eight minutes of the first half but even Shaw was getting wider in an attacking sense than he was on the left.
Solskjaer will be praying he has his eye back on the ball for the visit to the Etihad.

Marcus Rashford will want to forget about his trip to Selhurst ParkCredit: Rex Features
    Edinson Cavani – 5
Leading the line, Cavani showed some good movement in the first 45 – but his attacking team-mates were not on his wavelength.
Tired badly in the second half and cut a frustrating figure as he trudged off after being subbed.
    Subs
    Scott McTominay (replaced Fred, 74) – 6
Showed more attacking intent in 60 seconds than the man he replaced had in 74 minutes.
    Dan James (replaced Cavani, 76) – 5
Should have done a lot better with a free header from eight yards out two minutes after coming on.
(Subs not used) Victor Lindelof, Lee Grant, Amad Diallo, Alex Telles, Brandon Williams, Axel Tuanzebe, Shola Shoretire

Inter Milan ‘MISS Romelu Lukaku payment and must hand Man Utd full £43m transfer fee NOW or give player as compensation’

INTER MILAN have MISSED their latest payment as part of the deal to sign Romelu Lukaku with Manchester United demanding ‘compensation’, according to reports in Italy.
The Serie A giants signed the Belgian striker, 27, in a £73million deal in 2019.

Corriere dello Sport have claimed Inter Milan have missed a payment as part of the 2019 deal bringing in Lukaku from Man Utd, with the Old Trafford side demanding ‘compensation’

Romelu Lukaku joined Inter in 2019 for a £73m fee, with the Italians claimed to still owe £43m having allegedly missed a recent £4.3m instalmentCredit: Reuters

Inter Milan are claimed to have £43m of that figure still to pay.
Corriere dello Sport have now alleged the San Siro side have missed an agreed upon bonus payment, worth around £4.3m.
Under the terms of the initial Lukaku deal, it’s alleged Inter must now pay the remaining £43m fee in full or accept United’s request for compensation.
According to the report in Italy, Man Utd have told Inter they’re willing to waive the outstanding balance in return for one of their star players.

Centre-back Milan Skriniar and striker Lautaro Martinez are the two players mentioned by name in Corriere dello Sport, with United desperate for star reinforcements in both positions.
However, SunSport understands United would not accept any player as a makeweight.
SunSport have contacted Manchester United for comment.
Inter Milan are owned by Suning Holdings Group, one of China’s largest retailers.

Earlier this week, the company revealed they had ‘ceased operations’ at their Chinese Super League team, reigning champions Jiangsu FC, due to financial reasons.
Suning have confirmed they are committed to keeping Inter afloat, despite suggesting they would focus primarily on ‘core businesses’.
However, they are on the look out for ‘suitable partners’ to help them financially after being affected financially by coronavirus.
After Inter Milan ended their 26-year, £10m per season partnership with shirt sponsors Pirelli, the club released a statement.
It read: “As part of ongoing capital structure and liquidity management, the business and our ownership are in talks to provide a range of solutions in this respect.
“While Suning have confirmed their commitment to financially support the club with or without additional external support, it is also sensible and prudent to look outside.
“With that in mind, Suning appointed key advisers in Asia to work with them to find suitable partners, be that with an injection of equity capital or otherwise.
“Talks with key potential partners in this respect remain ongoing.”

Man Utd legend Paul Scholes claims Bruno Fernandes should NOT win Player of Year award with ‘few’ Man City stars ahead

BRUNO FERNANDES should NOT win the PFA Player of the Year award, with Manchester City stars much more deserving, according to Paul Scholes.
The Man Utd midfielder, 26, has been sensational for the club since joining a little over a year ago.

Fernandes has been involved in 40 goals in 40 games, scoring 23 times, while adding a further 17 assists.
The Portuguese star’s play has been a huge factor in leading United to second in the Premier League this season having been scrapping for Europa League qualification prior to his arrival.
But Scholes claims Fernandes doesn’t deserve to win any individual honour just yet – because he hasn’t led the club to glory and must become a ‘bigger influence’ to his team-mates.
Speaking on Optus Sport’s Matchday Live, Scholes said: “What he’s brought to this United team has been special.

“He creates goals, scores – not in the big games – but in a lot of them.
“Ultimately, at Man Utd you are there to win titles and big games. He has to be a bigger influence than that.
“I could give him a bit of an excuse with United’s centre-halves.
“To me, they need protecting too much, especially in the big games against proper forward players.”

Scholes continued: “(The central midfielders) sit too deep and Bruno doesn’t get the support from them, which is important to him.
“It is not just the ability he has got, he needs bodies around him to take people away, so he can come into spaces – that brings the best out of him.
“This will be a problem for United until they solve it.
“They need to sign a centre-half who is dominant, takes the ball off people…
“Look what City have done with Ruben Dias and all the teams that have won the league in recent years: Vincent Kompany, Virgil van Dijk…”
But when asked if Fernandes deserved a PFA Player of the Year nod, Scholes was sceptical.
The Old Trafford legend said: “He should be right in the mix, there is no doubt about that.
“But I am always a believer the best players are the players playing for the team that wins the league.
“There are a few City players I’d go for before Bruno.”

How Man Utd could line up with Erling Haaland, Jadon Sancho and Varane if they land all five ambitious transfer targets

MANCHESTER UNITED have scored a sensational 53 times in just 26 games this season to become one of the most-feared attacks in the Premier League.
Despite that, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is desperate to sign a new striker, with Borussia Dortmund superstar Erling Haaland one of FIVE big-name summer transfer targets.

How Man Utd could line up if they sign all of their top five summer targets

Man Utd have five European superstars on their summer transfer wishlist

As well as the Norway ace, United are believed to be hot on the trail of Jadon Sancho for the second summer in a row.
Defenders Jules Kounde, Raphael Varane and David Alaba are also on Solskjaer’s wishlist, with the back-four clearly a problem area, having conceded 32 times this term at over one goal per game.
But how would the Old Trafford chief squeeze all five stars into the team in the highly unlikely scenario they managed to land all of them?
First and foremost, Harry Maguire – still the most-expensive defender in history at £85million – would surely make way, with ex-United star Paul Parker calling from him to be replaced.

Varane and Kounde would form a superb mix of youth and experience in the heart of a back-four.
Solskjaer would be able to get the best out of Maguire by sticking him on the left of a back-three, where he thrived earlier in his career.
David Alaba would be the obvious choice at left-back, despite Luke Shaw’s stellar season.
The Bayern Munich star – out of contract this summer – is more than capable of playing at centre-back or further forward, in midfield.

How Man Utd could line up if they fail to sign any of their summer targets

However, questions have been raised over Alaba’s ability to play in the middle of a back-four in the ultra-physical Premier League, with John Barnes one pundit to suggest he’d struggle.
In midfield, Solskjaer appears more than happy with his deep duo of Fred and Scott McTominay, with Nemanja Matic providing more than capable back-up.
With Bruno Fernandes roaming behind the striker and Marcus Rashford on the left, the United boss has no worries there either.
However, United have lacked some genuine width on the right flank, with natural centre-forward Mason Greenwood preferred to wide-man Daniel James.
Sancho would comfortably slip in on the right-flank forging an impressive front-four with current Dortmund team-mate Haaland replacing the struggling Anthony Martial up front.
United have been told they must shell out £150m to sign Haaland this year, despite him being available for just £63m in 2022 due to a clause in his contract.
Edinson Cavani has been United’s No1 striker in recent weeks, but his contract expires at the end of the season, with talks over an extension believed to be ongoing.

Parker slams Harry Maguire for ‘playing game for himself’ and unnecessary ‘dribbling’ as he tells Man Utd to REPLACE him

PAUL PARKER has launched a sensational attack on Harry Maguire saying he’s ‘playing for himself’ and demanding Manchester United REPLACE him.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has led United to second in the Premier League, with his Red Devils also the division’s top scorers.

But often the Old Trafford side have been found wanting in defence.
Many fans and pundits have suggested Solskjaer needs to dive into the transfer market to find a more suitable partner for Maguire than Victor Lindelof or Eric Bailly.
But club icon Paul Parker has incredibly taken aim at captain Maguire, saying HE is the real problem with his unnecessary dribbling.
Parker told GrandNational.org: “Despite the position they find themselves in the Premier League, they still need to strengthen in the transfer market this summer.

“People talk about bringing in a new partner for Harry Maguire, but I would look at bringing in two centre backs.
“Why can’t it be a player who comes in and plays alongside Victor Lindelof?
“Maguire is not a leader, he plays the game for himself, he sits way too deep, he dribbles for the sake of dribbling and runs himself into cul-de-sacs.
“The goal against Sheffield United, he put David De Gea in a terrible position.

“He made a terrible clearance and people then blamed the goalkeeper.
“Sometimes you need to look at the build-up to see the mistakes.”
A scathing Parker concluded: “I have always been unsure about Maguire since the day Manchester United signed him.
“When they paid £80million, the club didn’t buy an £80m centre back.
“It was great business by Leicester.”
Parker also claimed Solskjaer MUST win some silverware soon or face the swing of the axe at Old Trafford.

The former defender continued: “Solskjaer has to win a trophy this season.
“He must want to win a trophy and have the hunger to do so, or he will have no chance of surviving as Man Utd manager.
“He has got to have that drive, as well as be able to convince his players that they are going to win stuff.
“I would not have that any other way, especially at a club like Man Utd.
“The club needs to win something, and he does too, for himself.
“Ole needs it for his CV, and to prove to everyone that he is good enough to be the Man Utd manager.”

Ferdinand begs Man Utd to ‘move heaven and earth’ to sign Mbappe or Haaland as he gives Solskjaer his transfer wishlist

MANCHESTER UNITED legend Rio Ferdinand has begged his former employers to ‘move heaven and earth’ to sign either Erling Haaland or Kylian Mbappe.
The 42-year-old has urged Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to sign one of the two strikers as he stated the club cannot allow their Premier League rivals to nab them.

Borussia Dortmund marksman Haaland has been heavily linked with a switch to Old Trafford, but United are understood to face competition from Chelsea and Manchester City.
Meanwhile Paris Saint-Germain star Mbappe is believed to be attracting interest from Liverpool and Real Madrid.
With Edinson Cavani set to become a free agent in the summer, Ferdinand has declared a striker must be brought in if United want to compete for the title.
Speaking on his FIVE YouTube channel, he said: “Cavani, yes, he’s a good stopgap but (we need) a centre-forward.

“If people like Erling Haaland or Kylian Mbappe are available, you can’t allow them to go somewhere else and you need to move heaven and earth to get them here.
“United are used to having superstars and those boys would change the narrative at this football club, that’s how good they are.
“There’s room for improvement and opportunity to improve this squad, there’s players out there available, it seems. We need to be in the mix.”
Ferdinand then stressed a quick centre-back must be eyed up, as he added: “Manchester United were playing catch up from everybody last season.

“They finished 30 points behind Liverpool last season, now they’re above them.  That’s a big, big achievement in that sense.
“I see progress. I still see room for improvement, we definitely need to buy a centre-back, a commanding centre-back with pace.”
Real Madrid ace Raphael Varane is believed to be a key target for Solskjaer, along with his Los Blacos team-mate Sergio Ramos.
United are also reportedly keen on bringing Fiorentina’s Nikola Milenkovic to the Theatre of Dreams, with the defender open to the move.
And the club are also said to be keeping tabs on Torino’s Nicolas Nkoulou, who is also on Leeds’ radar.
