How Celtic could line up under Roy Keane by raiding his old club Man Utd and finding long-term Scott Brown replacement

ROY KEANE could look to raid his old club Manchester United should he return to Celtic to replace Neil Lennon at Parkhead. The 49-year-old has reportedly held talks with the Hoops about taking the vacant manager’s position after Lennon resigned last month.
This is how Celtic could line up next season under Roy Keane should he replace Neil Lennon
SunSport exclusively revealed last month that Keane – who retired as a player at Celtic in 2006 – was keen to return to Glasgow to take charge of the club.
Bookmakers Betfair have suspended betting on Keane taking the reins of Celtic.
Spokesperson Sam Rosbottom said: “On Monday, Keane was 15/2 to take over from Neil Lennon but punters heavily backed the Irishman into 1/3 before the market was suspended on Thursday afternoon.
“It seems clear to punters that Celtic are ready to name their new manager and that Roy Keane will be walking through the door any time now.”
Keane hasn’t held a managerial job since leaving Ipswich in 2011, but he knows he has a task on his hands should he take control at Celtic, with the club in desperate need of an overhaul.
A number of players are expected to either be sold, or return to their parent club once their loan spell at Celtic comes to an end.
The Hoops are in need of a new goalkeeper having alternated between Scott Bain, Vasilios Barkas and Conor Hazard this term.
And they could turn to former shot-stopper David Marshall, 36, who is currently plying his trade at Derby.

It is understood that the Hoops have held talks with Keane about him taking charge at Parkhead
With right-back Jonjoe Kenny to return to Everton after his loan is completed, Celtic could turn to his Toffees team-mate Seamus Coleman.
Keane knows Coleman well from the Ireland set-up, and with the defender having just a year left on his deal at Goodison Park, he could be tempted to reunite with the Sky Sports pundit.
Left-back Diego Laxalt will also move back to AC Milan, and Keane could look to bring Manchester United’s Brandon Williams in on loan.
The youngster is behind both Luke Shaw and Alex Telles in the pecking order at Old Trafford, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer keen for him to get regular playing time.
Christopher Jullien could have a new centre-back partnership with Kristoffer Ajer urged by Norway boss Stale Solbakken to leave Celtic.
Motherwell’s Declan Gallagher has been linked with Celtic in the past, and the 30-year-old could return to the club he came through the youth ranks at.
With Scott Brown leaving to join Aberdeen on a player-coach deal, Callum McGregor is likely to become Celtic’s skipper.
And he could partner James Garner in the middle of the pitch, with the Manchester United youngster another player Keane could look to sign.
Roy Keane spent the final year of his career as a Celtic player

Ir remains to be seen whether Garner has a long-term future at the Theatre of Dreams having been on two loan spells this campaign.
James Forrest is likely to keep his place on the right wing, with Burnley’s Robbie Brady to potentially start on the opposite flank.
David Turnbull could line up in the No10 role, with another United starlet in Joe Hugill leading the line.
Odsonne Edouard seems destined to leave, with Arsenal and Leicester said to be interested in the Frenchman.
Celtic could turn to Hugill, who has chipped in with ten goals in 17 games in Premier League 2 this season.

Man Utd ‘told Erling Haaland will cost £154m transfer fee by Borussia Dortmund as Chelsea and City circle for striker’

BORUSSIA DORTMUND will demand £154MILLION for their star striker Erling Haaland this summer.A whole host of Europe’s biggest clubs are interested in the free-scoring sensation, with Manchester United heading that queue.
Erling Haaland is one of the hottest properties in world footballCredit: Getty
Since joining Dortmund from RB Leipzig in January 2020, the 20-year-old has scored 49 goals in as many games.
In all competitions this season Haaland has netted 33 times in 31 games. He has scored ten goals in just six Champions League matches.
According to ESPN Dortmund are asking for £154m for the Norway international.
In the summer of 2022 a clause kicks in that sees Haaland available for just £65m – but Dortmund hope the huge interest around him will lead to clubs stumping up more than double that.
As well as United, Chelsea, Manchester City, Real Madrid and Barcelona are all believed to be interested in signing the powerful frontman.
But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may have stolen a march and is reportedly ‘in contact’ with his countryman’.
According to Spanish outlet AS, Solskjaer ‘keeps calling’ Haaland in a bid to convince him of a move to Old Trafford.
Haaland previously played under Solskjaer at Molde and the two are said to have maintained contact.

The nine-cap Norway international has reportedly spoken to his agent, Mino Raiola, to make it crystal clear he wants to quit if Champions League football is off the table at the Westfalenstadion.
United’s frayed relationship with Raiola over the Paul Pogba transfer saga last year is a potential barrier blocking any deal for Haaland.
But the Red Devils are reportedly willing to grit their teeth and get it done for the sake of the team.
Solskjaer was desperate to get him from RB Salzburg and looked in pole position, given he had a close relationship with the striker at Molde.
He met the Leeds-born Norwegian personally to convince him to become a Red Devil as others swooped, but then lost out to Dortmund in a deal worth around £17.2m.

Nicky Butt quit Man Utd ‘amid friction with new director John Murtough’ as Beckham eyes giving him Inter Miami role

NICKY BUTT reportedly left Manchester United after ‘friction’ with the club’s newly-appointed director of football John Murtough. The official line from the former England midfielder, 46, who won six Premier League titles as a United player, was that he wanted ‘a new challenge’.

SunSport has exclusively revealed that Derby boss Wayne Rooney is interested in adding Butt to his management team at the Championship outfit.
But according to The Athletic, Butt and Murtough had ‘differing footballing views’.
Murtough was essentially Butt’s line manager in the new coaching set up. The Athletic describes the pair as ‘like chalk and cheese’.
It is also alleged that Butt felt ‘overlooked’ for the technical director role that his former team-mate Darren Fletcher bagged.
Butt helped bring current first-teamers like Marcus Rashford, Scott McTominay, Axel Tuanzebe, Dean Henderson and Mason Greenwood through United’s famous academy.
And Butt told the club’s official website: “Having come through the Academy myself to play almost 400 games for Manchester United, it has been an absolute privilege to come back and work with a new generation of talent making that same journey.
“I’m proud of the role everyone on the staff plays in giving our young footballers the best possible chance of fulfilling their potential.
“The results are clear to see in the increased number of homegrown players reaching the first team.
“I already know from my playing days how difficult it is to leave Manchester United.
“But it feels like the right moment for a new professional challenge.
“I look forward to exploring opportunities that build on the great experiences I’ve had here over the past nine years.”

Butt played almost 400 games under Sir Alex Ferguson and was a member of the historic 1999 Treble-winning side.
There will be no shortage of suitors for Butt and David Beckham may even try to lure him to Inter Miami.
But the lure of working with ambitious Rooney and helping him get Derby back into the Premier League may well appeal more.

Chelsea star Reece and Man Utd’s Lauren James become first brother and sister to play for England and are ‘living dream’

IN the case of the James clan, it’s very much about keeping it in the family.Last year, Reece and Lauren James made history when they became the first brother and sister to play for England.

It’s astounding that two talented footballers of the men’s and women’s game are even playing professionally, not to mention pulling on a Three Lions shirt and representing their country.
But the London-born pair are living the dream. Part of their success is due to their incredible father, Nigel.
A motorbike accident halted his promising career, after spells at Luton Town and Southampton.
Nigel found his true calling through mentoring youngsters and later set up Nigel James Elite Coaching programme.
It’s testament to him, his son and his daughter would eventually become pros.
    PARKLIFE
Reece, 21, and Lauren, 19, grew up in London with football an ongoing backdrop in their lives.
As well as a father with footballing aspirations, their elder brother Joshua was on the books of Fulham and Reading. Their mother Emma worked admirably for the NHS.
If the three siblings weren’t kicking a ball against a wall, they would be down the park honing their skills.
Often, their dad who would pass on his knowledge and put the three through training drills and exercises.
Lauren and Reece have always shared a tight bond together
The siblings grew up in London with football as their backdrop
Dad Nigel coached Reece, Lauren and their brother Joshua in the local park
“We grew up as a three,” Reece of Chelsea proudly told the Blues official website.
“Obviously, Josh learned from my dad and then it just passed its way down. I started playing because my brother played, and my sister played because I played.
“We all used to play every day together at the park and over time we all gradually got better. There was a field behind my house, with two pitches, and every day I’d be playing football, either in the field or in the street.”
Lauren, a striker for Manchester United, echoes the sentiment that the beautiful game dominated their lives.
“All I ever knew was football, football and football,” she told The Telegraph.
“My brothers got me into football. Whether it was when Josh was at Fulham or when Reece was at the Chelsea academy, I was there kicking the ball against the fence.
“I’ve always had a football and it has just taken me to where I am now.”
    PATHWAY TO SUCCESS
Reece was an early bloomer when it came to his footballing talent.
By the age of six he joined Chelsea’s impressive development academy, where he progressed through the ranks.

However, it took him some time to find his best position. He started off as a striker, moved into midfield and then had to learn the art of defending.
Once he cemented the right-back as his own, there was no stopping him. In the 2017-18 season, he appeared for England at U18, U19 and U20 level.
A loan at Wigan Athletic the following campaign saw Reece named as their Player of the Year.
Once he made his debut against Grimsby in the EFL Cup in 2019, scoring one and assisting two, he could no longer be ignored for a first team spot.
Lauren might be slightly younger than Reece, but her achievements are just as impressive.
At 13 she joined Arsenal, and because of her experience with playing with her brothers was encouraged to train with the boys’ team.
Two years later, the prolific forward made her first team debut for the Gunners women’s team – beating Reece to the punch there.
She created history in the process becoming the youngest player in Arsenal’s history male or female to make their bow for the club.
In 2017, she moved to the newly reformed Manchester United women’s team to take on a new challenge in a city she never knew.

Since joining the Red Devils, James has thrived scoring 27 goals in 54 gamesCredit: Getty
But that didn’t deter the brave teen, who scored 14 goals in 18 league games as the Red Devils won promotion from the Championship at the first time of asking to the Women’s Super League.
    BATTLING RACISM TOGETHER
As is a sad indictment of our times, both Reece and Lauren have been targeted with online racist abuse.
They are united in their efforts to encourage social media companies to do more with their platforms in stopping racism.
“When we both get messages like that, we turn to each other and discuss it,” Reece said.
“I think everyone agrees and knows that what’s happening with social media and racism is wrong. Everyone says they want to change, but not many things are changing.”
    MUTUAL RESPECT
Although they share a competitive nature on the pitch, Reece and Lauren only have a mutual respect for each other’s achievements.
But Lauren knew she had to emulate her brother by following his footsteps into the England squad.
“We are not usually competitive,” she revealed.
“When he got his senior England call-up, it was like, “Right, he got his, I’ve got to get mine now. That’s probably the only time and I laugh about it now.”
Reece earned his first cap against Wales last October, while a month later Lauren received a senior national team call-up as part of a 29-player training camp at St George’s Park.
Despite their careers mirroring one another, Reece is adamant they can’t be compared.

    “I wouldn’t say there’s competition,” he said.
“You know, she is my sister. Our games are the same, our professions are the same, but it’s still different. I play men’s football when she plays women’s football, you can’t compare them.”
No. But you can applaud their success. They are, after all, living the dream.

Man Utd should sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer if Europa League isn’t won… getting into top four is NOT success

FORMER Liverpool star Danny Murphy says Manchester United should sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer if he doesn’t lead his side to Europa League glory. It’s been a funny old season, and the Old Trafford boss can point to an increased points total compared to this time last year, a higher league standing and a change in culture behind the scenes, as progression.
Solskjaer should get the sack this summer if he doesn’t win the Europa League – a top-four finish alone is not enoughCredit: Getty
But people, including myself, have held top-four up as some kind of success, and it isn’t.
Since Sir Alex Ferguson’s time in charge, supporters’ expectations have been diluted by several mediocre finishes to the league season.
But this is Man Utd and the truth is, a club of United’s size, shouldn’t just accept top-four.
On Sunday during the 3-1 defeat to Leicester in the FA Cup, Solskjaer once again showed his inability to juggle the squad and get results.
He talked about tiredness post-match, but successful teams need to win a lot of games if they want a trophy at the end of the season.
Solskjaer has surprised many of us in big matches – like the win against Manchester City earlier in the month.
But there’s still a great inconsistency to how his side performs, and ultimately that needs to be eradicated if United are ever going to win a trophy.
Man Utd are all about winning trophies. There won’t be many supporters dancing in the streets in May when qualification for the Champions League is confirmed.

The blame for United losing three semi-finals last campaign, including in the Carabao Cup against City and Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final loss to Leicester, starts and ends with Solskjaer.
It looks like he can only take United so far, and when he needs to juggle his squad and be more tactically astute, he fails.
Thinking back to Murphy’s comment, he’s probably right. If United ever want to win something, a man that was sacked from Cardiff, probably isn’t the answer.
Behind the scenes the club have appointed John Murtough in the new role as football director, while former midfielder Darren Fletcher has been promoted to technical director, two known supporters of Solskjaer.
We’ll have to see if this is a sign that even without a trophy, top four alone is good enough for him to stay in charge.
The club keep harping on about planning for the future, but when does that end and we start seeing some silverware here and now.

United, we are told, ‘are not far away’, but repeated failure at the latter end of tournaments suggests there’s still some way to go.
Solskjaer will probably not have a better chance to win a trophy than this season.
Arsenal are the obvious threat in the Europa League, but if Solskjaer can’t deliver again the board should act and bring someone in that can take United across the finish line.
Domestically, several things have gone Solskjaer’s way this season, that probably won’t next term.
So to go into that campaign with some real belief, it’s time a trophy was delivered to help fans believe Solskjaer really is the man.

Man Utd star Mason Greenwood suffers injury and pulls out of England Under-21 squad before being replaced by Cantwell

Greenwood, 19, had last week received his first call-up to any England squad since his Iceland shame in September when Boothroyd announced his selection.
That was after he and team-mate Phil Foden had been sent home from the Scandinavian country in disgrace after breaking coronavirus rules while with Gareth Southgate’s seniors.
Greenwood has endured a difficult season, scoring just one league goal.
It was hoped he could find some confidence while away with the Young Lions.
Canaries attacker Cantwell, 23, has scored five goals for the Championship leaders this term.
With Europe’s elite nations taking part – England are in Group D with Portugal, Croatia and Switzerland – the Young Lions will ultimately be aiming to become the first England side to lift the trophy in 37 years.
Although England are appearing in an eighth successive Under-21 finals, they have only made it out of the group stage on three occasions in that run.
But Aidy Boothroyd last week revealed his confidence, saying: “I am excited by this group.

Having already slashed the asking price TWICE, Neville is now willing to accept offers of £2.75m having joined David Beckham at Inter Miami.
Neville agreed to become head coach of the MLS side owned by his ex-team-mate in January.
Now living and working in Florida, the former England Lionesses coach is desperate to get rid of his Manchester pad.
Neville already has a sprawling £5.25m home in Hale, Cheshire – with the flat surplus to requirements.
The incredible ‘triplex’ apartment boasts four beautiful bedrooms and three bathrooms, spread across THREE stories on the 44th, 45th and 46th floor of the building.
The 4,448 sq ft property features unparalleled views of the Manchester skyline from that height, with floor to ceiling glass windows throughout.
The master bedroom at the flat boasts a walk-in wardrobe, expansive en-suite with his and hers basins and oval-shaped bath.

But for now, it remains one of two properties struggling to sell in the UK.
As well as the flat, Neville is finding it hard to sell his Hale home.
That stunning six bedroom property boasts its own swimming pool, mini-football pitch, gym, games room, cinema, underground car park and a steel-lined panic room.
The Class of 92 star Neville previously tried to sell the 10,000 sq ft property for £4.5m in 2015 when he moved to Valencia as assistant to his brother Gary.
But it failed to sell and Phil, wife Julie and their two children moved back into the property when they returned to the UK.
