Man Utd player ratings: Greenwood dazzles with winner, Maguire pushes team-mates on but Cavani looks his age

MASON GREENWOOD was the matchwinner as Manchester United came from behind to beat Brighton. It wasn’t the most eye-catching of performances, but the three points puts United firmly in the driving seat for second place behind big rivals Man City.

Marcus Rashford had cancelled out old-boy Danny Welbeck’s opener for Brighton, who battled hard but lacked that cutting edge.
Here, SunSport’s John Hutchinson rates how United’s stars fared at Old Trafford.
    Dean Henderson – 6/10
Made a great point-blank save from Welbeck, but unfortunately couldn’t get near the rebound.
Held his nerve as Brighton piled forward for the equaliser and looked commanding in his area.
    Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 5
Benefitted from a rest recently but you wouldn’t have known in a subdued first 45.
Could have taken a few more risks in the second period to build some attacks down his flank

    Victor Lindelof – 6
Caught under the ball for Welbeck’s opening goal.
But battled well against the former Red Devil and Neal Maupay and is very much a confidence player.
    Harry Maguire – 7
Looked his usual composed self on the ball, but needed to give his team-mates some more urging during that dour first 45.
Became a pressing midfielder in the second half as United raised their line well into the Brighton half.
Harry Maguire led from example as he dragged United’s performance up a levelCredit: PA
    Luke Shaw – 6
Made his usual marauding runs in the first half, but often found himself in blind alleys.
Kept going forward in the second half and his confidence is flying him into the left-back spot for England at the Euros.
    Fred – 5
United’s trophy-winning teams of yesteryear demanded more of their midfielders than ‘looking busy’.
The Brazilian would be a good squad player going forward but surely doesn’t merit being a regular starter these days.
    Paul Pogba – 6
Frenchman was preferred to the likes of McTominay and Van de Beek in the middle of the park, but had a quiet first 45.
Stunning pass into Fernandes on the hour mark that the Portuguese star should have done better with.
Greenwood marked his man of the match performance with the winnerCredit: Reuters
    Mason Greenwood – 8
Looked the most lively of United’s attacking players in the first half, and hit the post with a rasping drive.
Confidence carried into the second, and wasn’t afraid to have a run and shot – and his header was a real poacher’s effort.
    Bruno Fernandes – 7
Injured his back early on, and that seemed to knock him off his game.
But still got his trademark assist for Rashford’s equaliser and was involved in the winner – standard.
    Marcus Rashford – 6
You’d have forgotten he was playing that poor first-half showing.
But the true sign of a world class player is they never take their eye off the ball, and he slotted home a beautiful equaliser before being subbed off ten minutes later with injury.
Rashford takes the congratulations from Cavani after equalisingCredit: Reuters
    Edinson Cavani – 4
Had to watch the midfield pass it around without ever actually getting the ball into his feet in the first 45.
But was a lifeless display up top for the 34-year-old Uruguayan and no surprise to see him subbed off.
    Subs
    Dan James (replaced Rashford, 72) – 6
Tried to get United motoring to complete a turnaround, and played his part in that.
Donny van de Beek (replaced Cavani, 81) – 6
Unlucky as if Greenwood wasn’t there he would have probably scored the winner as he was just behind.
Scott McTominay (replaced Pogba, 84) – NA
(not used): David de Gea, Lee Grant, Amad Diallo, Nemanja Matic, Brandon Williams, Axel Tuanzebe.

Man Utd poach top Crystal Palace scout Jamahl Jarrett as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ramps out transfer recruitment team

MANCHESTER UNITED are close to appointing Crystal Palace recruitment specialist Jamahl Jarrett to their scouting team. The 32-year-old is poised to become the lead scout for the South of England as the Red Devils continue their coaching and recruitment shake-up.
Crystal Palace recruitment specialist Jamahl Jarrett is poised to join Man UtdCredit: Instagram
Jarrett has been with Palace for ten years, and is also the co-founder and director of football for Lambeth Tigers.
He set up that football club to encourage children into football and not into a life of crime and gang culture.
Kids from the Tigers have gone on to join the youth-set ups of the likes of Palace, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, West Ham, Fulham, Millwall and Leicester City.
The appointment of Jarrett is the latest move to revamp things behind the scenes at Old Trafford.
Last month United appointed John Murtough as their first Football Director.
And former player Darren Fletcher was given the new role of Technical Director.
But there was a notable name heading for the exit door too.
United legend Nicky Butt QUIT as head of first-team development for a ‘new challenge’ after coaching there nine years.

SunSport has exclusively revealed that Derby boss Wayne Rooney is interested in adding Butt to his management team at the Championship outfit.
But according to The Athletic, Butt and Murtough had ‘differing footballing views’ and there was ‘friction’ between the pair.
Murtough was essentially Butt’s line manager in the new coaching set up. The Athletic describes the pair as ‘like chalk and cheese’.
It is also alleged that Butt felt ‘overlooked’ for the technical director role that his former team-mate Darren Fletcher bagged.
Butt helped bring current first-teamers like Marcus Rashford, Scott McTominay, Axel Tuanzebe, Dean Henderson and Mason Greenwood through United’s famous academy.

Man Utd wonderkid Hannibal Mejbri, 18, has been compared to icons Beckham and Keane – but dad wanted him to be a doctor

WITH a name like Hannibal, Premier League clubs could be forgiven for fearing Man United’s new teenage wonderkid. But the only thing terrifying about Hannibal Mejbri, the frizzy-haired 18-year-old midfielder, is his talent.

Mejbri arrived at Old Trafford in 2019 on a £9.3million move after a mystery fallout with former club Monaco.
But Monaco’s loss is United’s gain, as the playmaker, who also drew interest from Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham Hotspur, with the ace already enjoying a number of training sessions and a promising cameo for the first-team.
    HE CAME OF AGE
It was during an FA Youth Cup clash with Leeds at Old Trafford that he really came of age two years ago.
Targeted by the away fans, with chants like ‘Sideshow Bob is f****** s***’, a reference to the chief villain in The Simpsons, Mejbri was on the end of some tough challenges during the game.
But what doesn’t break you, only makes you stronger and Mejbri survived the test – putting in an accomplished performance on the ball.
Neil Ryan, the United Under-18 coach, told The Times afterwards: “He is a talented boy and like all good players he will get targeted by any opposition.
“That is what he has to learn, how to channel and focus his energies and not to get caught up in that, and I thought he did that well.”
Nicky Butt, who looks set to join Wayne Rooney at Derby County after being United’s head of first team development, has been impressed by the qualities he’s seen in Mejbri, comparing him to legends Bryan Robson, Roy Keane, Paul Scholes and David Beckham.
Butt told the Manchester Evening News: “Leaders are always looked at like a Roy Keane, a Steve Bruce, a Bryan Robson, those kind of verbal, real aggression, real leaders.
Mejbri found himself on the end of some tough tackles from Leeds youngstersCredit: Getty Images – Getty
“And then you’ve got leaders like Paul Scholes or David Beckham or Ryan Giggs, who’s quiet but really leads by example of how they play and how they work hard.
“We’ve got the old-fashioned leaders, if you like, who are going to talk to the players and drive the team,” he said.
“Hannibal (Mejbri)’s a leader. The way he plays his football is 100mph, he’s non-stop running up and down.”
He followed that up with a brilliant double in a pre-season friendly for the first-team against Salford last summer and was soon being tied-down to a new long-term deal.
    FALL OUT BOY
Back in August 2019, Manchester United pounced on Mejbri after he was embroiled in a disagreement with Monaco.
“Something bad happened,” his father Lotfi Mejbri, a former Tunisian footballer, told Le Parisien.
“For our family, it was very hard to live. It’s a real shock, a trauma.
“There were mistakes made and, from there, I consider the relationship of trust between the club and our family destroyed.”
His future always looked positive given the identity of his agent, Jorge Mendes, the man dubbed ‘the super agent’ who represents Cristiano Ronaldo and Jose Mourinho.
And yet, if it were up to his father, the boy would be battling in courts rather than midfield or performing in a hospital theatre rather than stadiums.
Despite being a footballer himself, Mejbri Snr insisted his hope was to see his son go into a career as a lawyer or doctor.
He once said: “Even if he does [make it as a pro footballer], I do not want him to have a chickpea for a brain in his head.”
Mejbri’s footballer father came from Tunisia but he has represented France at youth level

Mejbri had other suitors in the Premier League.
At the age of 14, he trained with Arsenal and had an offer from Liverpool but ended up in Monte Carlo.
Lotfi said: “It has never been a question of money. If we were in for that, we could have got a lot more than what is being claimed in the press.
“I will give an anecdote: after signing for Monaco whilst on holiday in Tunisia, a lawyer with a mandate from Liverpool called me with an enormous offer.
“But I only had one word for him.”

After the success of United signing Bruno Fernandes for £56m last year, Mejbri could find his path to the first team blocked for the time being.
However, Butt thinks that given time he will flourish for the club.
“He’s a very, very talented boy but he’s still very immature,” he said. He’s still a baby. He’s not got anything on him just yet, he needs to build up his size and build up his physicality.”

Ex-Arsenal striker Robin van Persie names the six best players he has played with, including four Man Utd legends

ROBIN VAN PERSIE named the six best players he played with in his career – and four of them were Manchester United legends. The former Arsenal captain, who spent his last three seasons in England at Old Trafford, retired from football at the age of 35.

Van Persie, now 37, controversially moved to Manchester in 2012 having rejected a contract extension offer from Arsenal.
He then went on to win the Premier League title in his first season at Old Trafford.
And the Dutch hotshot seemingly has fond memories from his time in the red half of Manchester, naming four Red Devils stars among best players he shared the pitch with.
When asked to pick his most talented team-mate, he told BBC Sport: “So difficult to name one.
“I would go for Dennis Bergkamp, Thierry Henry, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Wayne Rooney and Ruud van Nistelrooy.”

Van Nisterlooy in fact left Old Trafford in 2006 – long before Van Persie joined United.
But the two strikers played together for Holland, earning 172 caps and bagging 85 goals between them.
The former Arsenal skipper also labelled former Red Devils duo Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand as the best two defenders he ever faced.
Following a three-year spell at Fenerbahce, Van Persie moved back to his homeland to end his career at boyhood club Feyenoord, where he is now coach under Dick Advocaat.
And he claims he could have stayed at Old Trafford for one more season back in 2015 as he still had one year left on his contract.
But the striker decided to ‘move on’ when then-United coach Louis van Gaal made it crystal clear he was not in his plans.
The Dutch forward fired Manchester United to the title in his first year at the clubCredit: PA:Empics Sport
Van Persie said: “Because I had one more year on my deal, maybe I should have stayed.
“But then Van Gaal was the coach and he made it quite clear what his intentions were.
“Then you have to make a decision: Do you stay and fight for your place?
“Would it be an honest competition or not? Based on all that info, we decided to move on.
“But three years is not three days, it’s still a long period, it’s still a big part of my football career, and in total 11 years of football in England… as a kid I would never have dreamed of that.”

And Manchester United ace Martial played a huge role in giving France the lead.
Paul Pogba picked up the ball on the right flank, stroking a well-placed pass to Martial.
The former Monaco striker silkily flicked the ball around his defender, swivelled and took control of it.
Keeping his head up, Martial picked out Ousmane Dembele with a simple, calmly-played pass.
The Barcelona man made no mistake as he sent the ball arrowing past Aleksandr Mokin and into the Ukraine net.
A Serhiy Malyi own-goal put France well in control shortly before half-time – with the game ultimately ending 2-0 to the reigning world champions.
But both France and United were dealt a blow in the second half as Martial received treatment on the pitch before being taken off with what appeared to be a knee injury, replaced by Kylian Mbappe.
Earlier in the game, fans were left with the jaws on the floor thanks to Martial’s nonchalant yet dazzling piece of skill to tee up Dembele.

A third added: “See what I mean when I say Martial is a false 9 now?
“Picking up the ball on the half turn and passing it so cleanly like that isn’t easy. What a player.”

Man Utd and City among SIX clubs who could be offered Juventus star Dybala as part of swap transfer for Pogba or Jesus

MANCHESTER UNITED and City are among SIX clubs set to be offered Paulo Dybala as part of a sensational summer swap deal, according to reports.Juventus are reportedly keen to move on the Argentine international, 27, with the forward close to a move to Old Trafford in the summer of 2019.

Dybala is set to be offered in six swap deals with some of Europe’s biggest clubs this summerCredit: The Mega Agency
But now the Serie A giants are considering a series of potential swap deals with some of Europe’s biggest clubs as part of a major summer overhaul.
Juve are already mulling over the future of Cristiano Ronaldo – with his sky-high wages meaning a big name such as Matthijs De Ligt may be sold in the coming months.
However, the forward has been linked with a return to both Man Utd and Real Madrid with Juventus’ big gamble – going all in to win the Champions League – not paying off following another early exit in Europe.
Now Dybala is apparently on the transfer market – with Juve attempting a straight swap deal.
Juve, struggling financially due to the coronavirus pandemic, have endured a tough season by their extraordinarily high standards.
The Italian giants have won nine Serie A titles in a row but sit ten points adrift of Inter Milan in the quest to make it ten with just 11 games to play.
And a move for former star midfielder Paul Pogba is on the agenda for Andrea Pirlo and Co, according to Tuttosport.
Juventus sold Pogba to United for a then-world-record £89million in 2016 – with the Frenchman largely failing to find his top form with any consistency back at Old Trafford.

And the Italians hope Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could be tempted into finally parting with the 2018 World Cup winner in exchange for Dybala.
However, Juve have many other irons in the fire, with Man City striker Gabriel Jesus another potential swap target.
Juventus are also looking at Real Madrid midfielder Isco as a potential target, with Paris Saint-Germain forward Mauro Icardi also on their shortlist.
Elsewhere, Barcelona ace Ousmane Dembele and Atletico Madrid hotshot Joao Felix are other potential swap candidates for Pirlo’s squad.
Aaron Ramsey is another big-name being linked with a move away from Turin this summer.
Liverpool are believed to be interested in the ex-Arsenal ace as a replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum, who is expected to leave on a free this summer with his contract expiring.

Follmann, 29, was even part of the deal that saw Telles, 28, make his career-defining move to Gremio in 2013.
The pair lived together following their move to the Brazilian top-flight and have been inseparable ever since.
However, their careers have gone in very different directions.
Telles instantly shone at Gremio and bagged his big break with Galatasaray, before being brought to Porto on a mega-money five-year deal that made him a household name across Europe.
After two years at Gremio, goalkeeper Follmann briefly joined URT before bagging his own big break with top-flight over-performers Chapecoense in 2016.
But later that year, Follmann was involved in the plane crash that shook the world.
Follmann was one of just six survivors on LaMia Airlines Flight 2933, from Santa Cruz in Bolivia to Medellin in Colombia, which saw 71 passengers – including 19 Chapecoense players and staff – die.
The goalkeeper was forced to have one of his legs amputated and retired from football to embark on a career in music, winning Brazilian reality TV show Popstars in 2020.

But new Man Utd star Telles – himself a talented musician – was there for his pal throughout his ordeal.
Both Telles and Follmann have opened up on their incredible friendship.
Follmann told the Mirror: “We always talk. Our friendship is very strong.
“I have a huge affection for Alex and I know that he has for me.
“He is a brother that football gave me.
“I am a big fan of Alex the athlete, but even more Alex the person.”
Telles agreed, adding: “We are more than friends, we are brothers.
“Our days together have always been very joyful.
“I am so grateful for having him in my life and he knows that I will always be there for him no matter what.”
Now at Man Utd, Telles started his career at Juventude alongside FollmannCredit: AP
As well as a love of football, the pals share a mutual love of music.
Looking back at their early days in Brazil, Telles recalled: “He taught me to play the guitar and sing.”
Follmann added: “We sang a lot at home, we formed a beautiful country duo.
“Alex also knows how to play guitar, piano, drums and cavaquinho (a Brazilian string instrument).
“And by the way, he sings very well!”

Bellingham almost became the Three Lions’ youngest-ever goalscorer, but his acrobatic effort narrowly went wide of the post.
And Keane has waxed lyrical over the teenager who opted to join Borussia Dortmund from Birmingham last summer instead of Manchester United.
Keane – who has held talks with Celtic about the vacant manager’s job – told ITV Sport: “Bellingham looks like a complete midfielder.
“He’s still a kid playing regularly in Germany.
“He’ll be disappointed with missing the chance, but at 17 he has nice composure, happy to break forward, very good night’s work.
“He will be disappointed with the chance, he tries to complicate it when he should just side-foot it.”
Ian Wright added: “Some players want to move it quickly and he has a nice calmness to him, and we’re going to need it.”
