Man Utd kid Will Fish is natural leader and commanding centre back included in Solskjaer’s Europa League squad

THEY already had Captain Marvel at Manchester United, and in youngster Will Fish they have another potential leader among their ranks. With the Red Devils suffering a selection headache in defence for Thursday’s Europa League second leg, and the suspensions of Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw, Fish, 18, has been drafted into the squad.

Commanding Fish, 18, has risen through the ranks at UnitedCredit: Getty
The 6ft 1in defender is a commanding centre back, who will be relatively unknown to most fans.
But, amongst his peers in the youth sides, he’s the team-mate they all look to – like the stars of the 80s and 90s did with Bryan Robson.
And he has formed an impressive partnership with fellow youth prospect Teden Mengi at the heart of the defence for the U18’s.
    CAPTAIN FANTASTIC
Fish has always been a leader from the front.
Born in Manchester, he’s one of their own and plays for the club with plenty of pride.
He rose through the ranks to captain United’s U16 team. Incredibly, he also made his debut for the U23’s at the tender age of 16.
And manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer certainly feels he’s ready for the first team.

“He’s a very good talent, a composed centre-back with physical stature. He’s one we believe in,” the United boss revealed.
“Of course, we’ve lost a few defenders so to have Will on the bench is a good experience for him and he’s there if he’s needed and he’s ready.”
    EXPERIENCE IN THE U23’S
This campaign, Fish has been a regular in the U23’s.
He only turned 18 in February, but already has started 17 of the 20 matches in the Premier League 2 matches.
What’s even more remarkable is he’s worn the captain’s armband on seven of those occasions.
Fish also completed 90 minutes for United’s U21 team in the 6-0 EFL Trophy win over Salford City.

He showed plenty of composure during an impressive performance.
Last year, Fish signed his first pro contract with the club.
    STILL LEARNING
Although he’s got a steady head on his shoulders, the centre half still has a long way to go before he could become a first team regular at Old Trafford.
With Mengi on loan at Derby County, Fish has struggled in some games without his defensive partner.
He provided an assist against Southampton earlier on this season.

But against Brighton he was sent off after just seven minutes, and he is still learning the art of defending.
That said, given he’s played in every age group above his, it shows he can be relied upon when needed.
If United’s backline suffers anymore injuries, Solskjaer won’t be afraid to throw Fish in at the deep end.

Declan Rice ‘asked Man Utd stars Maguire and Shaw about club during England World Cup qualifiers and keen on transfer’

The Manchester Evening News reports Rice, 22, asked his England pals some questions about aspects of life at Old Trafford during the international break last month as he contemplates his future.
A number of United players are thought to be very popular within the England group and club chiefs may hope that senior stars could help swing a deal.
United are said to have been monitoring his progress for over two years as they look to land a young defensive midfielder.
The report states the club believe Rice – who can also slot in at centre-back – could develop into more of a box-to-box style player at United.
SunSport exclusively revealed United will not entertain any kind of swap deal involving West Ham loanee Jesse Lingard.
Lingard has been on fire since arriving at the London Stadium to get more game time, bagging eight goals in nine games for David Moyes’ side.
And the Hammers are desperate to make the 28-year-old’s stay permanent leading United chiefs to ponder whether they could use Lingard as makeweight in an £80million package for Rice.
But West Ham are not interested in their vice-captain being involved in any deal with Moyes suggesting his vice-captain was worth well over £100m.

Chelsea have also been linked with Rice after they discarded him as an academy ace.
The Blues looked at signing him last summer when Frank Lampard was in charge with the 42-year-old confirming he wanted to bring Rice in before he got the sack.
Rice is out of action after suffering a knee injury on England duty but avoided surgery and will be assessed next week as the Hammers bid to land a Champions League spot.

Varane, Kounde, Milenkovic, Gimenez: Which defenders Man Utd and Chelsea should sign in summer transfer window

MANCHESTER UNITED and Chelsea are desperate to add a touch of class to their defensive ranks this summer. Both Premier League giants boast exceptionally strong squads.
How Milenkovic, Varane, Kounde and Gimenez compare in the league in 2020-21
But both also have a glaring weakness: their centre-backs.
At United, Harry Maguire has been crying out for a strong, long-term partner with Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe all rotating alongside him with mixed results.
In Chelsea’s case, Antonio Rudiger has seen his Stamford Bridge career saved, with Andreas Christensen and Kurt Zouma also impressing.
Thiago Silva and Cesar Azpilicueta are coming towards the end of their careers, with Fikayo Tomori likely to make his loan deal at AC Milan permanent this summer.
Now the Blues are set to join Man Utd in diving into the transfer market to add some star quality.
Both clubs have been linked with FOUR big names: Raphael Varane, Jules Kounde, Nikola Milenkovic and Jose Gimenez.
But which of the European superstars has enjoyed the best season? We take a look at the league stats for all four…
    NIKOLA MILENKOVIC
Giant centre-back Nikola Milenkovic has popped up on a number of clubs’ radar this seasonCredit: EPA
    Age: 23
    Club: Fiorentina
    Trophies won: 3
    Estimated cost: £30m
THE Serbian star has emerged as a potential transfer target for some of Europe’s biggest clubs in recent months.
Milenkovic has impressed despite Fiorentina sitting way down in 15th in Serie A – winning just seven of their 30 matches.
With the Viola struggling, the 6ft 5in defender will surely be desperate for a move and will be available for just £30m.
Milenkovic has won three trophies in his career – all in Serbia with Partizan – and is yet to win a tournament while playing for a Big Five leagues team.
Out of the four defenders, Milenkovic has played more games – and more minutes – than any other this season.
The Serbian has also won the most tackles and aerial duels per 90 minutes – as well as boasting the best aerial duel success rate.
Milenkovic has also scored more than his three rivals, with three Serie A goals this term.

    RAPHAEL VARANE
Raphael Varane has a little over a year left on his Real Madrid contract and could be sold this summerCredit: Reuters
    Age: 27
    Club: Real Madrid
    Trophies won: 19
    Estimated cost: £60m
THE biggest name on the list, Varane would be a major coup for any side in the world.
Real Madrid could lose Varane AND Sergio Ramos this summer as they battle the financial effects of coronavirus while saving money for mega-money moves for Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland.
The French legend is out of contract at the end of NEXT season and could walk away for free.
Desperate to avoid that fate, Madrid could cash-in this summer for a staggeringly good-value £60m – when you consider Maguire cost United £85m.
Varane has won 19 major trophies in his career, including three LaLiga crowns, four Champions League titles and the 2018 World Cup with France.
In terms of head-to-head stats, Varane leads only in tackling success rate, having won 65 per cent of his ground duels.
    JULES KOUNDE
Jules Kounde has become one of the most in-demand centre-backs in Europe in recent monthsCredit: EPA
    Age: 22
    Club: Sevilla
    Trophies won: 1
    Estimated cost: £50m
KOUNDE has emerged almost from nowhere to become one of Europe’s hottest properties.
The Sevilla star has continued to impress in recent months and is now being chased by Europe’s elite, including Real Madrid to replace Varane and or/Ramos.
Still young, Kounde has just the one trophy to his name – the 2019-20 Europa League, when he was also named in the tournament’s Squad of the Season.
But he has all the talent to catch up with the likes of Varane, and even leads the quartet in terms of minutes per goals, conceded, clean sheets and interceptions per 90 minutes.
    JOSE GIMENEZ
Jose Gimenez could finally leave Atletico Madrid after eight years, with Chelsea keenCredit: EPA
    Age: 26
    Club: Atletico Madrid
    Trophies won: 5
    Estimated cost: £54m
STILL young but also with plenty of experience, it’s little wonder clubs are chasing Gimenez.
The Uruguayan has spent eight years at Atleti, winning the 2017-18 Europa League among other gongs.
Gimenez was also a losing finalist in TWO Champions League campaigns – in 2013-14 and 2015-16.
Compared to his rivals, Gimenez leads only in goals conceded, letting in just 12 goals – however he has played substantially less than Varane, Kounde and Milenkovic.

Man Utd star Luke Shaw admits he laughs off Roberto Carlos comparisons as he enjoys brilliant run of form

LUKE SHAW has admitted he just laughs off his new ‘Shawberto Carlos’ nickname as he continues his stellar 2020-21.The Manchester United left-back, 25, has is now comfortably the No1 choice for both club and country, ahead of the likes of Alex Telles and Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell.

Shaw’s resurgence after some tricky years – most-notably under Jose Mourinho – has led to many comparing him to Brazil legend Roberto Carlos.
But the full-back has revealed he has shrugged off the jokes, saying there’s no comparison to the ‘unbelievable’ Real Madrid icon.
When asked about his new nickname, Shaw told the Man Utd website: “I’ll be honest I’ve seen some things on social media.
“And sometimes in my group chats my mates send me some stuff and I just laugh about it.
“I can’t be compared to him, he was unbelievable.
“I’m aware of it and it’s nice to be even mentioned alongside his name.
“But I just laugh about it.”
Shaw went on to say he didn’t even try to model his game on Carlos growing up – instead idolising Chelsea, Arsenal and England legend Ashley Cole.

The Three Lions star continued: “Looking back at when I was growing up and what I wanted to be as a player, then I would have to say Ashley Cole.
“I’ve always been a massive fan of him and thought, when I was growing up, he was one of the best left-backs at that time.
“For me, as an all-round full-back he was one of the best I’ve ever seen with attacking and defending, so I’d say Ashley Cole.”
Shaw became Man Utd’s most-expensive teenage buy in history when he completed his £30million move from Southampton in 2014.
Injuries – including a horror leg break against PSV Eindhoven in 2015 – hindered his progress.
But his current form – and ability to keep fit – has United and England fans looking forward to the future with his prime years still ahead of him.

Solskjaer confirms Man Utd want Jesse Lingard back after amazing West Ham loan spell in blow to permanent transfer hopes

WEST HAM have received a huge blow in their quest to permanently sign Jesse Lingard after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer declared he wants him back at Manchester United. The 28-year-old has been in inspired form since he joined the Hammers on loan in January after failing to make a Premier League appearance for the Red Devils this term.

England international Lingard has chipped in with eight goals and four assists in just nine top-flight outings for David Moyes’ side.
West Ham failed to secure an option to buy clause when signing Lingard on loan, and they now look set to miss out on keeping him at the London Stadium.
Speaking ahead of United’s Europa League quarter-final second leg tie against Granada, Solskjaer stated Lingard will be welcomed back to Old Trafford.
He even told reporters he wouldn’t be surprised if he is included in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for this summer’s European Championship.
Solskjaer said: “Jesse has been brilliant since he left. Selfishly we could have kept him because he’s always got a part to play.
“He’s a fantastic lad and Manchester United through and through. Not once did he moan or cause me a problem earlier in the season.
“He came in and worked hard, he deserved to play more, that’s why we let him go to West Ham.
“We welcome him back and I hope he goes to the Euros, I don’t think that’s beyond him.

“I hope he’s got a strong finish in the league in him. It was different here because of the form of Bruno [Fernandes], who was playing in arguably Jesse’s favourite position.
“But I’m delighted for him and we just wish him the best for the rest of the season until he comes back.”
SunSport exclusively revealed that Arsenal are keeping tabs on the ex-Brighton loanee with his contract to expire in 2022.
And Lingard has even been linked with the likes of Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain after reviving his career.
United legend Rio Ferdinand recently spoke of Lingard’s situation, where he warned him to avoid going near the Gunners.

Man Utd’s Harry Kane transfer dreams OVER after Solskjaer’s bitter row with Tottenham manager Mourinho

JOSE MOURINHO’S row with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has killed off any lingering chances of Harry Kane moving to Manchester United this summer.Tottenham striker Kane was linked with a move to the Red Devils after announcing he would decide his future after the Euros.
Harry Kane’s future is set to be THE big topic this summerCredit: PA
SunSport revealed last week Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is reluctant to sell the England captain – especially to a Premier League rival.
But some reports over the weekend claimed United were still interested in the £150million-rated frontman.
That interest, though, has now ended after Tottenham manager Mourinho’s bust-up with United chief Solskjaer following the Red Devils’ 3-1 win there on Sunday.
The pair clashed in the tunnel afterwards after Mourinho was angered by comments the Norwegian had made about Spurs striker Son Heung-min – who was accused of play-acting in an incident which led to Edinson Cavani having a goal disallowed in the first half.
It prompted Solskjaer to say: “If my son stays down for three minutes and he needs his 10 mates to help him up, he won’t get any food.”
A furious Mourinho responded with: “I just want to say Sonny is very lucky that his father is a better person than Ole.”
And the bitter row has put paid to Kane moving to Old Trafford this summer – after it increased the tensions between the two clubs.
United have never liked dealing with tough negotiator Levy, and vice-versa.

And now United have ruled out Tottenham selling Kane to them after Sunday’s shenanigans.
The Red Devils hierarchy are angered by Mourinho’s reaction and feel their former manager did it to take the spotlight of another poor Spurs display.
And while they still rate Kane as a striker, they would not be happy to pay Tottenham, of all clubs, top dollar for his services.
This means if Kane is to leave this summer he is likely going to have to move abroad.

Man Utd transfer boost as Saul Niguez one of SEVEN players put up for sale in Atletico Madrid clearout

MANCHESTER UNITED have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Saul Niguez with the Atletico Madrid ace reportedly up for sale. The Red Devils are known to be admirers of the 26-year-old and were rumoured to be eyeing up a £71million bid for him last summer.
Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez could depart the Spanish side in the summerCredit: The Mega Agency
And it was claimed in December that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have reignited their interest in the midfielder ahead of a possible summer move.
It has been alleged that should Paul Pogba depart Old Trafford at the end of the season, then United would make a swoop to sign the Spain international.
And according to Cadena Ser, United’s chances of landing him have been boosted, with Atletico prepared to cash in on their academy graduate.
They state that up to seven players could be heading for the exit door at the Wanda Metropolitano, including loanee Lucas Torreira, who will be heading back to Arsenal.
It has also been suggested that Chelsea target Jose Gimenez could be sold.
Winger Vitolo – who has been offered to West Ham for £8.5million – is another player that Atletico are said to be keen to offload.
Speaking last year, Saul put United on red alert when he admitted that he is ‘flattered’ to being linked with the club.
He told Marca: “I am very flattered that a club like Manchester United or other teams that ask about me take me into consideration, for me it is very positive.

“And that strong people in those clubs speak well of you means that I am doing things well at Atletico Madrid.”
Since making his Atletico debut in 2012 at the age of 17, Saul has featured in over 300 games for the club, where he has won the Europa League twice and the Copa del Rey.
He has been a key player for Atletico this term, chipping in with two goals in 33 outings in all competitions.
Saul has missed just five LaLiga games this season as Atletico sit top of the table with eight matches to play.
