Neville reveals regret over ignoring Ferguson advice and Simeone torturing him with tactics during flop Valencia spell

GARY NEVILLE admits he regrets not heeding Sir Alex Ferguson’s advice during his ill-fated spell as Valencia manager.Neville infamously took charge of the Spanish club during the 2015-16 season.

But he lasted just 28 games after picking up only ten wins before being sacked.
Neville’s time at the Mestalla is now looked back on as a prime example of bad management.
And Neville himself admits he should have paid closer attention to advice given by former Man Utd boss Fergie.
Reflecting on his Valencia spell last year, Neville told Sky Sports: “Early on it was clear that some players were unhappy.
“I should have made big decisions on players that weren’t committed to the club at that point.
“I remember speaking to Sir Alex early on and his advice was: ‘Just get rid of them and protect yourself. Only have people in the dressing room that are facing the same direction as you.’
“But I didn’t listen. I tried talking some players round to staying until the end of the season. But they weren’t happy.
    “I ignored Sir Alex’s advice.”

Neville also revealed how out of depth he felt against Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone, saying: “I felt like he was strangling me gently throughout the game.
“I felt like he put his hands around my neck and thought ‘I’ll just toy with you a little bit.’
“He was almost torturing me, football-wise, over 90 minutes.
“At the end of the game I went to shake his hand and he just stormed off past me down the tunnel.
“To me, you always shake your fellow manager’s hand out of respect, so I thought, ‘you are one horrible so-and-so.’
“I admired that in his teams when I’d watch them, I’ve admired it since.
“His team represent him. His bench was all over the place during the match, they’re all screaming and shouting.
“I don’t know whether he’s like that anyway or whether he just thought, ‘I think I need to leave one on you here. You need a lesson.’”

But thankfully the procedure was a success, and after less than a month Fergie was back at home being nursed back to health by his loved ones.
The 79-year-old has opened up in ‘Sir Alex Ferguson: Never Give In’, out in the cinemas from May 27.
Speaking about that traumatic day, he said: “I was crying because I don’t remember a thing.”
His son Jason, who directs the film, recalls the shock of what happened.
He adds: “He just put his head in his hands and said ‘Oh, I hope there’s nothing wrong with my memory, there better be nothing wrong with my memory’.”
The documentary will recount the most important stories of his life, both in and out of football.
And it certainly wasn’t plain sailing off the pitch for Fergie.
He reveals he ‘went off the rails’ in his younger days and ‘fell out’ with his dad.

He adds: “I’ve always regretted that. But the football was a saviour.”
The documentary vows to show the football legend vividly recalling his career – recounting the stories behind his most influential defeats, trophies and players.
It charts his move from his own successful playing career and prolific goal-scoring at Scottish clubs, including Rangers, to his move into management and leading Aberdeen to the European Cup Winners’ Cup and then finally his move south to Old Trafford.
After a testing few years at United, he turned the club’s fortunes around and led them to over two decades of consistent success.
Under Ferguson’s guidance, Manchester United won a glittering array of trophies, including 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups and two Champions League titles.
He has won more trophies than any other manager in football history.
The film features candid interviews with Sir Alex himself, his wife Cathy, his three sons, as well as former colleagues and elite players including Eric Cantona, Ryan Giggs, Gordon Strachan and Archie Knox.
Sir Alex Ferguson: Never Give In releases in UK cinemas on 27 May and on Amazon Prime Video on 29 May.

Man Utd’s Brandon Williams wanted by Norwich on loan with Prem new boys joining Saints and West Ham in transfer race

NORWICH have joined the race to loan Brandon Williams this summer. The Championship winners are big admirers of Manchester United’s promising full-back, who is hoping to be farmed out next season for more game time.

Norwich may well need a new right-back this summer ahead of their return to the top-flight, given the interest in star Max Aarons.
But they face stiff competition to land Williams, 20, from a host of clubs including Southampton and West Ham.
Saints were hoping to borrow Williams in January but United chief Ole Gunnar Solskjaer did not want to let the defender go.
Ralph Hasenhuttl is still keen to bolster his full-back ranks in the close season though and remains interested in the England Under-21 ace.
The Hammers meanwhile would see versatile Williams, who can play both on the right and the left, as a good fit for their wing-back system.
David Moyes has made good use of the loan system this season already having borrowed Williams’ team-mate Jesse Lingard from Old Trafford to great success.
Williams burst onto the scene last term under Solskjaer, making 36 appearances across all competitions.
But the Manchester-born starlet has made just 11 appearances this term, including only seven minutes of Premier League action.

He hasn’t featured in the top-flight since the 2-0 victory against Manchester City in March where he came on as a late substitute.
His last outing came in the 2-0 win against Granada in the Europa League on April 15.
And there could be a chance for Williams to be involved in the semi-final second leg tie against Roma on Thursday with United having one foot in the final.

Jadon Sancho vs Jack Grealish tale of the tape: How Man Utd targets compare this season as BOTH linked with transfer

MANCHESTER UNITED are believed to be in hot pursuit of Jadon Sancho and Jack Grealish this summer – but who should they go for?Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to add a new attacking midfielder to his squad in a desperate bid to add some natural width.
How Jack Grealish and Jadon Sancho compare through the 2020-21 season so far
Man Utd are believed to be hot on the trail of both Grealish and Sancho this summerCredit: AP
Man Utd were on the brink of signing Sancho, 21, last summer, but failed to pay the £108million Borussia Dortmund were demanding.
It’s claimed there’s a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ in place allowing the ex-Manchester City youth ace to head to leave in the upcoming window.
But United may now have turned their attention back to Grealish – with Old Trafford icon Roy Keane admitting he’d swap Paul Pogba for the Aston Villa captain.
Grealish, 25, was another on Solskjaer’s radar – along with Three Lions pal James Maddison – before the club went all-out for Sancho.
And now, in a repeat of 2020, United are set to reignite the whole saga once more.
But with both Sancho and Grealish valued at around £100million it’s unlikely the club will be able to afford both.
So who should United make their No1 priority?
We’ve taken a look at the 2020-21 season stats for the two England stars to see who’s enjoying a better campaign.

Incredibly, Sancho and Grealish have enjoyed very similar seasons.
The Dortmund winger has played one more game than the Villa ace this season, with 23 matches under his belt.
Both players have scored six goals, with Grealish narrowly leading the assists stakes with ten to Sancho’s nine.
Sancho boasts a marginally better goals per 90 minutes ratio at 0.29 to Grealish’s 0.27.
But the Villa skipper narrowly leads in assists per 90 minutes on 0.46 to Sancho’s 0.43.
Grealish edges the passing accuracy stakes too at 83.2 per cent to the Bundesliga man’s 82.2 per cent.
Jadon Sancho has recovered from a shaky start to enjoy a strong 2020-21 at DortmundCredit: AP
Jack Grealish continues to get better and better at Aston Villa amid a strong seasonCredit: Getty
While Grealish leads Sancho in chances created at 75 to 62, Sancho takes the top spot in successful dribbles per game at 3.3 to 2.8 and touches this season at 1,734 to 1,431.
But Sancho is miles adrift when it comes to winning fouls.
Grealish has earned a staggering 100 free-kicks this season, compared to his 19.
Then there’s experience – Grealish is a Premier League veteran at this stage with 92 games under his belt, while Sancho has never played a senior, top-flight game in England.
So plumping for the Villa star would mean United would likely have to deal with a shorter transition period than opting for the Dortmund winger.
But in truth, either player would massively improve Solskjaer’s squad – and it could be a matter of whoever is more available this summer.

Fans chanted and lit flares next to the team bus as it waited for the squad.
Players were seen peering from the windows as the game was at first delayed, and then called off.
And boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his stars finally left and boarded their team coaches at around 7.15pm.

It came after hundreds of United fans broke into Old Trafford and stormed the pitch to protest against the club’s owners, the Glazer family.
Thousands also gathered outside the famous old stadium, with flares and bottles thrown during the protest.
And one police officer was hospitalised after “being attacked with a bottle and sustaining a significant slash wound to his face”.
Protestors also got into the tunnel and dressing rooms as police and stewards struggled to regain control.
A United statement read: “Following discussion between the Police, The Premier League, Trafford Council and the clubs, our match against Liverpool has been postponed due to safety and security considerations around the protest today.
“Discussions will now take place with the Premier League on a revised date for the fixture.

“Our fans are passionate about Manchester United, and we completely acknowledge the right to free expression and peaceful protest.
“However, we regret the disruption to the team and actions which put other fans, staff, and the police in danger.
“We thank the police for their support and will assist them in any subsequent investigations.”

One lad climbed on to the goal at the Stretford End while others had a kickabout and let off flares.
Dozens also targeted the Lowry Hotel where the team was staying.
Police at both protests used batons to quell angry supporters, who want the Glazer family to sell up.

Sky Sports said during their live broadcast that pitch side cameras as well as balls, corner flags and other items have been taken.
Greater Manchester Police condemned the violence as they confirmed the injuries to officers.
Their statement went on: “Officers were aware of a protest planned to take place in Old Trafford today (Sunday 2 May) and were working closely alongside partners to ensure those that attended were kept safe whilst enabling their right to peaceful protest.
“Early this afternoon, groups of protestors began to gather at Old Trafford and separately at The Lowry Hotel, Salford where the United players were staying. By late afternoon around 200 protestors had gathered outside the Lowry and over 1,000 at Old Trafford.
“Officers continued to closely monitor the situation, engaging with those present but as the groups grew in size; it became clear that many of those present were not intending to exercise their right to peaceful protest.”
GMP Assistant Chief Constable Russ Jackson said: “The behaviour displayed today by those at both Old Trafford and The Lowry Hotel was reckless and dangerous.
“We understand the passion many supporters have for their team and we fully respect the right for peaceful protest.

“Plans were in place to ensure this could happen safely, but it soon became clear that many present had no intention of doing so peacefully.
“The actions of those today required us to take officers from front line policing and call in support from neighbouring forces to prevent the disorder getting worse.
“At different points, bottles and barriers were thrown, officers assaulted and people scaled the stadium structure creating risk for themselves and officers
“We have launched an investigation and we will be working closely alongside partners to ensure we establish the full circumstances surrounding today’s events and prosecute those responsible.”
The majority of fans protested peacefully, angered by the Glazers who have cost the club in the region of £1.5BILLION in servicing the debt incurred by their 2005 takeover.
For United legend and Sky pundit Gary Neville the protest was simply an expression of a the fans frustration with the way United has been run-down by the Glazers who he says should now do the ‘honourable thing’ and sell up and get out.
Neville said: “There’s huge discontent. They’re basically saying enough is enough.”
“The Glazer family have been resilient and stubborn for many years. I think they’re struggling for many, many years to meet the financial demands this club needs and have done for some time.
“This stadium, if you go behind the scenes, is rusty and rotting. The training ground is probably not even in the top five in this country.
“They haven’t got to a Champions League semi-final for 10 years and haven’t won the league for eight. The land around the ground is undeveloped, dormant and derelict when every other club seems to be developing their facilities and their fan experiences.
“The Glazer family are struggling to meet the financial requirements and the fans are saying the time is up.
“They’re going to make a fortune if they sell this football club. If they were to put it up for sale now I think the time would be right and it’d be the honourable thing to do.”
Ex-United captain Roy Keane, in the stadium as a pundit, said: “The fans are protesting because they love the club.
“They see Man United as a football club, not a business or a brand.”
TV pundit Jermaine Jenas said: “Stand outside by all means, but there’s a section of Man United fans that have let themselves down.”

Fans had begun assembling from 1pm and it was around 2pm that two loud fireworks went off signalling for the fans to push past security guards and get inside the ground.
The fans spent only a short time on the pitch before going back outside around 2.20pm where there was a stand off with police who by now had arrived in numbers wielding batons while missiles flew back the other way and even metal barriers were thrown.
Police on horseback finally dispersed the protesters from the forecourt.
Meanwhile the players remain locked inside the Lowry hotel watching the protest outside from their room windows.
Initially around 150 fans laid siege to the hotel’s main entrance and surrounded United’s two team buses after bursting through a police cordon.
They were finally moved away from the hotel but were still blocking the exit road from it.
With the club already hugely security conscience an explosives search team later arrived to sweep the stadium, while parts of it will have to be deep cleaned as part of Covid protocoals with one fan understood to have made it into the changing rooms.
A Premier League statement read: “Following the security breach at Old Trafford, the Manchester United vs. Liverpool game has been postponed.
“This is a collective decision from the police, both clubs, the Premier League and local authorities.
“The security and safety of everyone at Old Trafford remains of paramount importance.
“We understand and respect the strength of feeling but condemn all acts of violence, criminal damage and trespass, especially given the associated Covid-19 breaches.

The game has been DELAYED, as doubts rise as to whether it will be able to take place at all.
The United faithful gathered en masse outside the Theatre of Dreams in a protest against the Glazers, where Ole Gunnar Solskjaer pleaded for it to be peaceful.
But tempers flared during the protests with supporters seen throwing punches at each other.
And footage later emerged online showing fans inside the ground where they stormed onto the pitch and lit off flares.
A flare was also thrown towards the Sky Sports studio, where Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher was watching from.
Sky Sports said during their live broadcast that pitch side cameras as well as balls, corner flags and other items have been taken.
Around 10,000 fans are believed to be campaigning against the Glazers as fans look to force their American owners to leave.
Manchester Evening News report that a section of fans launched a beer can at a camera crew, telling them to “Stick your f****** cameras up your a***” before they broke into Old Trafford.

The Athletic have stated that Old Trafford has been placed on lockdown.
Journalist Lauire Whitwell tweeted: “Old Trafford placed on lockdown as fans get onto pitch.
“Hundreds make their way through the stadium and exit the other side.
“Security taking a sensible approach, letting them out the gates where team coaches should arrive later.”
Amid the chaos, Sky have reported that referee Michael Oliver and his team have been denied access to the ground for now.
And unsurprisingly, United’s clash against Liverpool has been delayed, with Geoff Shreeves declared: “We’ve just been told by the Premier League that kick-off will be delayed.
“It will not kick-off at 4:30 this afternoon, as yet, we do not have the revised kick-off time either.
“I’ve just received the news that the players are still currently locked in their hotel rooms, or certainly away in their hotel rooms, their safety is paramount.”
