Wales keeping their focus after boss Ryan Giggs’ trial date set for allegedly assaulting two women and coercive control

Giggs, who has already been replaced by Robert Page for Euro 2020, will now miss Wales’ final SIX 2022 World Cup qualifiers this autumn.
The 47-year-old, who denies the allegations, appeared in court today and was told the trial could last three weeks.
Giggs has been bailed until a plea and trial preparation hearing scheduled for July 23.
The Manchester United legend, who stepped aside as national manager following his arrest last November, is under contract with Wales until after the Qatar World Cup in December next year.
Welsh FA bosses will hold talks to discuss Giggs’ future but no decision is expected with the legal process ongoing.
Wales are currently in the Algarve where their pre-Euros training camp ends tomorrow and midfielder Joe Morrell says the squad hasn’t been distracted by the latest development in Giggs’ case.
Morrell said: “We have always been quite laid-back with the situation as a squad. We have fantastic senior players who help us with that. They have run the dressing room really well.
“We have never really looked too deep into it. Pagey has been the manager and that’s that.

“If the situation changes then it changes. But we are focusing on what we can do and taking the messages on board from Pagey, just like we did before with the manager.
“It’s not a case of moving on, it’s just a case of trying to keep it as similar as possible.
“We have had the same messages from Pagey as we got from the gaffer before. It’s just the continuity that will benefit us going into the summer.”

David De Gea IGNORED Man Utd keeper coach penalty notes that could have won Europa League in Villarreal shootout loss

DAVID DE GEA ignored his cheat-sheet as Manchester United lost their Europa League final penalty shootout against Villarreal.United had fought back into the game in Gdansk thanks to a second-half strike from Edinson Cavani.

Gerard Moreno had opened the scoring for the LaLiga giants, but the Uruguayan’s crucial goal forced extra-time and penalties.
Before the dreaded shootout, United coaches Richard Hartis and Craig Mawson handed De Gea a list of Villarreal’s players and where they normally put their penalties.
The note, slipped into the goalkeeper’s towel, even gave additional advice on each player’s run-up.
However, De Gea was unable to save ANY of Villarreal’s 11 spot-kicks, before missing his own to hand the Spaniards their first-ever major trophy – and extend United’s trophyless streak to four years.
The Spaniard initially followed his cheat-sheet to the letter – only having no advice for Moreno – but was unable to keep any out.
During the crucial sudden-death period, De Gea went off-book THREE times.
Moi Gomez took Villarreal’s sixth penalty, with his notes revealing he would go down the middle.
But De Gea dived to his left, with Gomez – as suggested – rolling the ball into the centre of the goal.

The Spaniard also ignored the advice for Francis Coquelin, although saving his brave, top-corner strike would have been a monumental feat.
De Gea also failed to adhere to the advice given on Pau Torres – with his gamble almost paying off.
Understandably, De Gea was given no advice on how to keep out opposite number Geronimo Rulli’s kick.
And when his own tame effort was parried away by Rulli, United were left disheartened – with Bruno Fernandes spotted in tears.
De Gea has now failed to save any of his last 40 penalties.
But a psychological expert has refused to blame the Spanish stopper for the defeat to Villarreal – instead claiming captain for the night Fernandes was at fault.
A study suggests going second in the shootout results in a 20 per cent dip in success rate.
And with Fernandes winning the coin toss and opting to go second, an LSE professor has laid the blame at the feet of the £50million Portuguese midfielder.

But Rashford has vowed to break that drought next season with the club ‘having everything to compete at the highest level’.
After the heartbreaking loss in Gdansk, Rashford said: “The feeling inside is difficult to explain. We came here to win.
“We’ve been working so hard all season and this was the opportunity to win a trophy and it didn’t happen for whatever reason.
“We have to get rid of the disappointment and look back at the game and see what we did wrong.
“The team will not give up – no chance. The manager won’t allow us to give up.
“We will come next season with a bigger desire.
“People say a lot about Man Utd going downhill but for me, the club, desire, hunger, talent, ability, the squad, we have everything to compete at the highest level.
“We just have to show it to the world and ourselves, show why we belong in the top places and why we need to win finals like this.”

United finished second in the league, reached the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup and quarter-finals of the FA Cup.
But Solskjaer has bitterly claimed the season can’t be called a ‘success’ with no trophies to show for it.
When asked after the defeat if the season could be classed a success, he simply snapped: “No.”
But Solskjaer did echo Rashford’s sentiment that United are on the path to big things.
The Norwegian added: “When you come out without the trophy you haven’t done everything right.
“We’re getting closer and closer and better. We were one kick away from a trophy and a good night.
“We have to have the desire to come back next year and improve.

United had slipped a goal down only for Edinson Cavani’s second-half strike to rescue his team yet again.

The former Red Devils defender tweeted: “You can’t switch performance on and off like a tap.

United improved their Premier League standing in 2020-21, finishing second.
But they were still 12 points adrift of rivals Manchester City with just 74 points from their 38 games.
United also crashed out of the Carabao Cup at the semi-final stage to their neighbours while losing in the FA quarter-finals to eventual winners Leicester.
Meanwhile, a psychological expert has blamed Bruno Fernandes for United’s shootout loss – for winning the coin toss and choosing to go second.

Bruno Fernandes handed Villarreal 20% advantage by picking Man Utd to take second penalty in shootout despite toss win

Eventually the game went to penalties, with captain for the night Fernandes winning the coin toss.
The Portuguese playmaker opted to shoot second, with the first 21 penalties all converted.
David De Gea missed in sudden death as Villarreal were crowned champions – reducing Fernandes to tears.
But LSE professor and psychological studies expert Ignacio Palacios-Huerta revealed United were always up against it thanks to Fernandes’ decision.
He explained shooting second takes a mental toll on players handing the side shooting first up to a 20 per cent advantage.

Palacios-Huerta told Sportsmail: “I would think that most people in football know about, or at least have the right intuition, on this 60-40 advantage.
“It was shocking to see that Bruno decided to give that 20 per cent advantage to Villarreal.”
Palacios-Huerta has written a study on the subject called Psychological Pressure in Competitive Environments: Evidence from a Randomized Natural Experiment.

In the paper, the professor reveals he has proven shooting second has a ‘detrimental effect on performance’.
But boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was quick to not blame De Gea for his miss, saying United should have killed the game off in normal time.
Solskjaer said: “You go through every scenario, of course, and [De Gea’s penalty record] had crossed my mind in the build-up to the game but we were confident in David and prepared.
“Anything can happen in a penalty shootout. I stuck with the keeper who played all of the game.
“I’ve got to say the penalty shootout was high quality, but we didn’t do enough in the 120 minutes to score more goals and that’s the disappointing bit.
“We had pressure, we had moments where we felt if we can just kick on a little bit now we can get a goal. But we just couldn’t.”
