He played a key role in Sporting winning their first Portuguese league title since 2002, while he also won the Taca da Liga, or league cup.

And he could feature against Hungary in Portugal’s Euro 2020 Group F opener on Tuesday, where interested parties will be keeping a watchful eye.
According to Record, Manchester United and City are keen on the full-back, along with Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona.
The news outlet stated that the player is ‘destined’ to leave for a big club, with Sporting open to selling Mendes should they receive a £43m offer.
That is despite Mendes, who is tied down at the the Estadio Jose Alvalade until 2025, having a release clause of £60m.

SunSport have exclusively revealed that the Red Devils expect to announce his arrival at the club after Euro 2020.
A five-year deal is understood to be on the table for the ex-Manchester City youth star, who will earn £350,000-a-week at the Theatre of Dreams.
But according to Sport1 journalist Florian Plettenburg, United have identified France ace Coman as a back-up should they fail to land Sancho.
Taking to Twitter, he stated that United were keen on bringing Coman to the Premier League last year.
Valued at £43million, the 24-year-old would cost almost half of what BVB are seeking for Sancho.
With Coman’s contract talks said to have stalled at the Allianz Arena, the Champions League winner could be sold later in the summer.
Though it is believed that the former Juventus man is keen on extending his stay in Bavaria.
Sancho meanwhile has revealed that United’s players have been asking him about his future while on international duty with England.

It has been claimed that Ronaldo’s representatives have contacted United, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain over a potential switch.
His future will likely become clearer after Euro 2020, though any move could prove tricky given his hefty wages.
Corriere dello Sport suggests the Theatre of Dreams is one possible destination for him, but United would only be able to offer him a reduced salary.
It is also possible Paul Pogba could be used in an exchange for the forward.

Man Utd legend Roy Keane predicts Marcus Rashford and Raheem Sterling will ‘explode’ for England at Euro 2020

MARCUS RASHFORD and Raheem Sterling are set to ‘explode’ into life for England at this summer’s European Championship, according to Roy Keane. Both Three Lions stars endured a slight slump in form last season.

Keane reckons Rashford and Sterling have been quiet but are ready to tear up defences at Euro 2020Credit: PA
Sterling, 26, scored just ten goals – less than half of his 2019-20 – tally, with emerging superstar Phil Foden often preferred by Pep Guardiola.
Rashford, too, saw his goal-scoring tally dip from 17 to 11 in the Premier League.
But Manchester United icon Keane reckons that bodes well for England with Rashford, 23, and Sterling set to take out their frustrations on their Euro 2020 rivals.
Keane said: “Sometimes you look at players who have had a quiet spell – quiet because they’ve set such high standards.
    “Rashford and Sterling, for example.
“But I think that is a good thing. You’re going into the tournament going ‘these lads are ready to explode’.
“Gareth [Southgate] definitely likes Rashford and Sterling.”
However, Southgate has a dilemma on his hands with a plethora of attacking talent at his disposal.

Sterling, Rashford and Kane would be England’s most experienced front three.
But the likes of Jack Grealish, Mason Mount and Foden have all been in red-hot form of late and will be pushing for a starting spot.
Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka are two other young stars vying for a place in the first XI.
Grealish particularly caught the eye in the friendly wins over Austria and Romania.
But Keane reckons the Aston Villa captain won’t make Southgate’s first-choice team.
Keane continued: “Listen, I like Jack. But I think if Jack is playing, you’d have to leave out Mount or Foden.”

Harry Maguire reveals missing Man Utd run-in was so tough because ‘I was playing the best football of my career’

HARRY MAGUIRE says missing Manchester United’s run-in was even tougher to take because he was in the form of his life. The Old Trafford skipper is fighting to be fit for England at the Euros but is certain to miss the opener against Croatia on June 13.

Manchester United defender Maguire suffered ankle ligament damage against Aston Villa last monthCredit: AFP
Maguire was sidelined for United’s last five games – including the Europa League final loss to Villarreal – with ankle ligament damage.
It was a nightmare end to a campaign which started in turmoil following his arrest on the Greek island of Mykonos after a clash with police.
He has appealed his 21-month prison sentence, which is suspended for three years, but the retrial is unlikely to happen until 2022.
The defender suffered a difficult start to the season with United and England and was sent off in the Three Lions’ 1-0 Nations League defeat to Denmark at Wembley in October.
But he quickly regained top form to become a key man for United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Maguire, 28, said: “Myself and the United team had a really bad start. We did not get a good pre-season and started the season really slowly but we soon improved.
“At the time of the injury, I had been playing the best football of my career.
“I had been really happy with my game for a few months. I was playing with a lot of confidence and belief.

“My fitness levels before the injury were really good. I was playing week in, week out and that had put me in a really good place in terms of my defending and when I had possession.
“I have to remember that feeling when I was playing well and must work hard to be fit and be ready to go again and continue where I left off.”
Maguire, who hurt his ankle in the 3-1 win at Aston Villa on May 9, was devastated to miss last week’s Europa showdown with Villarreal.
United agonisingly lost 11-10 on penalties after a largely terrible display.
The centre-back said: “Playing in a big European final was what I had dreamed of.
“So to miss the game was really tough and to then not get the result we really wanted made it even worse.
“It was a massive disappointment, not just for myself but for the rest of the lads, the staff, the club in general and the fans.
“We controlled the game for the first 70 minutes and had a lot of crosses across the box but did not really create too much.

“There was only one team who looked as though they would go and win the game. Then in extra-time we ran out of steam and the game petered out.
“We should have applied more pressure in the game to go and try and win and  obviously penalties are  penalties. You cannot blame anyone for that.”
The wait now continues for a United trophy, with their last success coming in the 2017 Europa League.
But Maguire claimed that beating Villarreal would not have eased the pressure on the team – or Solskjaer – next season.
An £85million arrival from Leicester in 2019, he added: “There is pressure every game you play for United.
“You are expected to win so not winning the Europa League final does not put more pressure on.
“Even if we had won the trophy, the fans, quite rightly, would have demanded that we go and win another trophy next season anyway.
“We have to put it right next season. We have got to improve in everything we do on and off the pitch.”

United supporters have longed for Glazer and his family to sell their stake in the club, and their anger towards the American’s reached boiling point over their intentions to join the European Super League.
Furious supporters stormed inside Old Trafford in protest against the Glazers last month, which forced the clash against Liverpool to be rescheduled.
And in an attempt to appease the United fanbase, Joel Glazer has vowed to splash the cash in the summer, as well as creating a Fan Advisory Board and a Fan Share Scheme.
He said: “Our goal is to win every competition we compete in, and we will continue to invest in our Academy and in the transfer market to support the manager in an effort to meet the club’s goals.
“As a club we have devoted a lot of time and resources over the last several years updating and further developing our vast global scouting network to adapt to the modern football environment.
“This is a project that should provide a foundation for long-term success in the years to come.
“In addition, as you all know, we have also been focused on growing and developing our women’s team in line with the traditions and values of the club, and we are committed to continuing that process.”
Before adding: “We want this club to always be successful and win trophies. To compete for trophies requires significant investment.

“The commercial growth at the club has helped deliver the revenue which ultimately underpins that investment in a sustainable manner.
“That approach has allowed us to have among the highest net transfer spend in world football over the last five years and have one of the highest wage bills.
“Also, as a direct result of our commercial business, we have kept ticket prices affordable for all fans and not raised season ticket prices in over ten years. This is an area that we as a club are very proud of.”
Following the meeting, Glazer remarked: “I was pleased to join the Fans’ Forum to listen to the views of supporters, address their questions, and share ideas on how we can improve the way we work together.
“As owners, we want exactly the same thing as the fans – a successful team and a strong club – and we want to work in partnership to achieve those objectives.
“Fans are the lifeblood of Manchester United and I am personally committed to ensuring that they are given an enhanced voice, through the creation of a Fan Advisory Board and a Fan Share Scheme.
“The club has been in discussions with MUST regarding a fan share scheme for a number of months and has already sought external legal advice on options.
“Discussions will now intensify, with the aim of agreeing a plan before the start of the new season.”

United boss Solskjaer is looking to bring in a number of players in the summer as his search for his first trophy in charge of his beloved side continues.
Long-term target Jadon Sancho could finally complete a switch to the Theatre of Dreams from Borussia Dortmund in a £77million deal.
Meanwhile United are claimed to be battling Chelsea for the signing of Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez.
His team-mate Kieran Tripper is also said to be an option for United as Solskjaer looks to provide competition for Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
And United remain keen on Sevilla centre-back Jules Kounde as a potential partner for Harry Maguire in the heart of defence.

Man Utd star Bruno Fernandes reveals how tearful Cristiano Ronaldo inspired him after Euro 2004 heartbreak

BRUNO FERNANDES has revealed watching Cristiano Ronaldo in floods of tears after losing the Euro 2004 final inspired him to push himself to the limit to make it as a professional. The Manchester United star goes into this summer’s tournament as one of the players to watch after his red-hot 18 months at Old Trafford.

But Fernandes, 26, has piled praise on international team-mate Ronaldo for playing a huge role in forging his footballing career.
Aged just nine, the ex-Sporting Lisbon midfielder was left heartbroken as Portugal – the hosts of the 2004 European Championship – were shocked by 80/1 outsiders Greece in the final.
But seeing Ronaldo bounce back from his teenage tears to become one of the greatest footballers of all time inspired Fernandes.
Fernandes told the Man Utd website: “Growing up, everyone knows Cristiano was my favourite player.
“When Cristiano began to take his first steps in the national team, it was in the Euros in our home country [Euro 2004], so I was nine years old.
“That year stays with everyone because we lost the final in Portugal.
“We saw him crying after the final, he was a young boy who was starting to shine and from there I started to watch him.”
Fernandes continued by explaining he drew mental inspiration from Ronaldo, rather than strictly technical.

The United ace said: “It wasn’t because [Ronaldo] plays in my position because that wasn’t the case.
“It was the way he worked every day, the mentality he had, the capacity he had to give 100 per cent in every game at a high level.
“For me it was like a motivation, like you always have to do better.
“He was scoring goals every game, but game after game he was still trying to improve, get better.
“My mentality comes a little bit from understanding what sort of player you want to be.
“OK, you will have bad games for sure, everyone has – Cristiano has had bad games, 100 per cent – but the point is, coming back from a bad game.
“The mentality to do better day after day is really important for me.
“I’m improving a lot because of this, and that was my biggest motivation.”

Fernandes was yet to earn his first Portugal cap when the nation were surprise winners of Euro 2016.
But the Man Utd star revealed watching them lift the trophy helped push him to greatness.
Fernandes added: “There are a lot of matches that have inspired me.
”But I think, for me, as a Portuguese, the final of the 2016 Euros is an inspiration for every kid, every player…
“At that moment, we’d never won anything in the national team.
“I’m really proud of that and it’s one of the games I remember more.”

Captioning the photo, he said: “Today is one of those special days that God gives us, happy with the arrival of our little “Silvestre”.
“I congratulate you @eternalprimavera21 for that courage of Leona. I love you.”
The name the couple have opted for is the Spanish equivalent of Sylvester and means ‘Coming from a wild place’.
The footballer and Jocelyn also have a daughter called India who turned two last month.
Jocelyn’s pregnancy was cited as one of the reasons the striker was planning to return to South America earlier this year when he was being linked to a move to Argentine giants Boca Juniors before he agreed to stay on at United.
Argentine media outlet Infobae reported at the time: “His partner Jocelyn Burgardt is close to giving birth and the family’s idea is to return to Uruguay in June to welcome the new heir.
“After having been away from each other for so long, the Cavani family will be united once again or just a few hundred miles apart if Edinson ends up forming part of Argentinian football.”
Jocelyn was last pictured in a touching family video the United frontman posted in January on his social media, showing him painting his daughter’s hands before placing her right palm on his left cheek.

Cavani has two children from a previous marriageCredit: Instagram @cavaniofficial21
The pretty 29-year-old, a keen dancer who has starred regularly in the annual carnival which takes place in the Uruguayan city of Bella Union, looked on affectionately as the couple’s pet dog walked past in the background.
She was sat with her legs crossed and there was no obvious sign of a baby bump, although her stomach was hidden under a cardigan and little India was in front of her most of the time.
Her absence from Cavani’s social media posts since January sparked speculation she had already travelled to Uruguay to give birth.
The couple are now back home ahead of the start of the Copa America in less than a fortnight’s time.
Cavani recently spoke of the importance of being vaccinated against Covid after getting his jab in his native city of Salta.
    MESSY DIVORCE
The footballer has two sons called Bautista and Lucas from his relationship with former wife and childhood sweetheart Maria Soledad Cabris.
They split in 2014 after allegations of infidelity levelled against the footballer shortly after the birth of Lucas.
Their marriage was blown apart after the publication of a photo while Cavani was playing for Naples, showing him with his arms round a young Italian journalist named at the time as Maria Rosario Ventrone.
Maria Soledad was quoted at the time in Italian press as saying: “Edinson has betrayed God, the God he strongly believes in. He’s betrayed his family.”
The star couple’s subsequent divorce was heavily played out in the Uruguayan press. After his split from Maria Soledad, Cavani insisted: “A divorce is always difficult. It’s a failure. But I’m divorcing my wife, not my children.
“I’ve always behaved in a clear and unmistakable way towards them. I’ve always fulfilled my obligations towards them and will make sure they have all they need now and in the future.”

Cavani’s romance with Ventrone was short-lived and she blasted him after their split by claiming in an interview: “He left me nine months after we started living together.
“He was very jealous, almost possessive and I still don’t know why we finished.”
The United striker is said to have met his current partner through Uruguayan footballer Gaston Ramirez.
Cavani put an end to speculation about his future last month by signing a contract extension with United that keeps him at the club until June 2022.
