Real Madrid are reluctant to sell their French stalwart, but refuse to lose him for nothing when his contract expires next year.
United have been in negotiations for some time with the 28-year-old and his representatives.
A report emerged earlier this week that the two clubs ‘are not far off’ agreeing terms.
That said, Varane wanted to head straight to Manchester after his summer holidays, rather than have to return to pre-season training in Madrid.
Now Diario AS claims he has already begun house hunting in the North West.
The ace is currently still on his summer break after featuring for France at Euro 2020.
His much-fancied side were eliminated by Switzerland a fortnight ago in the last-16.
Man United’s interest in Varane has been long standing and they were first keen to sign him before he went to Madrid as a teenager in 2011 from Lens.

The Red Devils were also keen to sign him in 2018, but couldn’t get a deal done.
Madrid were initially demanding a fee of around £80million this summer.
But due to his contract situation, they are resigned to losing him for a lot less.
United are believed to be working on a package worth around £50m.
And they hope to get the deal concluded sooner rather than later.
They are also expected to officially announce the arrival of England winger Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund over the coming days after he completed a medical at Carrington this week.

He has now been given a three week holiday following his exploits with England in Euro 2020.
His first game in a Red Devils shirt will come on August 7 in a pre-season home friendly against Everton.
And United have now announced a price cut for that game and their home friendly with Brentford on July 28.
Tickets had previously been £30 for adults and £10 for under-16s but are now £20 for adults with kids getting in for free.
Season ticket holders will be charged only £10.
The chance to get a first glimpse of Sancho as a United player is sure to add to the interest in the Everton game.
He was one of three players to miss a penalty in the Euro 2020 shoot-out.
His performances for Borussia Dortmund particularly over the last two seasons has created an excitement among United fans at his arrival as they hope for a tilt at next season’s title.

The club announced yesterday that anyone who had already bought tickets at the higher price for the two home friendlies can either have their seat upgraded at no extra charge or have a refund.
Collette Roche, the club’s Chief Operating Officer, said: “The government announcement has enabled us to open up the stadium and this has given us an opportunity to offer these family-friendly ticket initiatives. We want to thank our loyal fans for their ongoing support and welcome those who will be attending Old Trafford for the first time.
“We are also putting the finishing touches on plans to recognise and reward those in the frontline who have served our community throughout the pandemic at these matches which will be announced in due course.”

But Solskjaer sent Italy a warning over Rashford, saying the forward, 23, could be a key man if he is given a rare chance by Gareth Southgate.
Rashford has played just 83 minutes across four matches at the tournament so far, failing to score.
And hen asked about the impact of his Man Utd stars on England’s glorious summer, Solskjaer told the Man Utd website: “It’s tremendous.
“They’ve been so solid, the team, and I think Luke and Harry are definitely helping out in that respect.
“They don’t seem to concede chances and have been very robust.
“I’m very happy Harry is fit and playing while Luke just keeps on going.
“Over the last couple of seasons, he has just improved more and more.
“Marcus, of course, has had to be patient because there are other good players around. He’s just got to be ready.
“If, in the final, Marcus comes on, I’m sure he’ll be ready.”

Solskjaer then offered a little advice to his Old Trafford stars ahead of the Wembley final showdown.
The Red Devils chief added: “[I would just say] enjoy it, of course. Be focused.
“Of course, we’ve kept in touch about enjoying the victory and then then next morning, get on with the next one.
“Nothing becomes history as quickly as a football game.
“It’s history and you have to just look forwards to the next [one] and be ready.
“Luke and Harry, it’s just recovery, Marcus it’s train well, show a good attitude and show Gareth that you are ready.
“We keep in touch all the time. We will send them a good-luck message of course and it’s been the case for all the players, throughout the Euros and Copa America.”

Solskjaer went on to say he hopes England’s success can galvanise Man Utd as a club as they aim to overthrow neighbours Manchester City next season following a promising 2020-21, as they finished second.
The United boss said: “You can see here in England, it so unites the country when the team does well.
“Hopefully we, as a club, can unite our own fans next season and that’s what we’re looking forward to.
“When England won in the semis, just watching it on TV, you can see the country is bouncing.
“There are probably a few sick days being pulled, probably on Monday if it goes well – or even if it goes badly.”

And it is also the first kit to be sponsored by new partner TeamViewer.
With Pogba chosen as one of three players to model the shirt, it could mean that United have no plans to part ways with him this summer.
The French midfielder is out of contract in 2022 and has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford.
The likes of Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus and Real Madrid are all said to be interested.
But United are reportedly eager to hand Pogba a new long-term contract.
Fans were delighted to see the pictures of the club’s new kit.

PSG ‘want to close transfer for Man Utd star Paul Pogba this summer’ but must first shift deadwood

According to French newspaper L’Equipe, PSG ‘would like to close the purchase of Pogba in the next few weeks’.
It is reportedly ‘the dream’ for president Nasser Al-Khelaifi who wants to ‘build the team around Pogba’.
The French giants have already signed Sergio Ramos, Achraf Hakimi, Gio Wijnaldum and Gianluigi Donnarumma this summer.
But the Ligue 1 runners-up will have to ship out some players first. United will still expect a big fee despite the 28-year-old having a year left on his contract.
And Pogba, who was France’s best player at the Euros, is believed to take home around £290,000 a week at United.
PSG are growing increasingly confident of sealing a move this summer.
According to French publication RMC, the 28-year-old is ‘more than open’ to the idea of leaving United for the French capital.
United could be forced to cash in on his signature this summer or risk losing him for nothing in 12 month’s time.

That would be a last resort for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side who forked out £89million to bring him back to Old Trafford from Juventus in 2016.
Pogba was linked with a move away from United last summer but a £150million price-tag put off potential suitors.
Now his value is likely to have dropped to only around a third of that.
United are open to raising cash to bolster their own squad having already forked out £73m to sign Jadon Sancho.
Pogba has also been linked with a return to Juventus, as well as joining Spanish giants Real Madrid.

But it could have been so different had United pulled their finger out – instead the only player David Moyes brought in on deadline day was Marouane Fellaini.
Speaking on his YouTube show, Vibe with FIVE, Ferdinand explained: “Before Thiago left Barcelona, he called me.
“We played against Barcelona in the States on tour, and he was unreal. He was playing as the 10, and he scored a worldie.
“So we knew about him anyway, and a few years later, Moyes was manager.
“I don’t speak to Thiago, I don’t know him, but David De Gea gave him my number.
“‘He rang me, and he said: ‘Rio, I would love to come to Man Utd. Can you speak to someone?’”
Ferdinand, 42, revealed he spoke to chief exec Ed Woodward and Moyes about the possibility of bringing in Thiago.
But there was also an offer on the table from Bayern, and his old boss at Barca Pep Guardiola.

Given just 24 hours to make the decision and with United stumbling, Thiago moved to the Bundesliga.
And that choice didn’t turn out too bad – the 30-year-old went on to win seven German titles and the Champions League.
Last summer he joined then-Premier League champs Liverpool, but had an injury-hit first season in England.
