Solskjaer takes cheeky dig at Man Utd legend Gary Neville after he criticises club’s keeper dilemma

MANCHESTER UNITED boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has aimed a cheeky dig at Gary Neville over comments he made about the No1 dilemma. The Red Devils legend, who played with the Norwegian icon from 1996-2007, has stated it must be decided who is the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.

He has claimed that the situation at Old Trafford must be sorted out with both David De Gea and Dean Henderson vying for a starting spot.
England international Henderson started ten out of the last 12 Premier League games last season after forcing De Gea out of the team.
But it was the Spanish shot-stopper that was selected for the Europa League final, where he failed to save any of the 11 penalties in the shootout defeat against Villarreal.
Commenting on the goalkeeping situation, Neville told Sky Sports: “I think just sort the goalkeeping situation out.
“Settle that down, decide who is going to be number one and United are in a good position defensively.”
Speaking to the media ahead of Saturday’s pre-season clash against Everton, Solskjaer addressed Neville’s views.
When informed of Neville’s preference to know who his starting goalkeeper was, Solskjaer quipped: “I enjoyed having one first-choice right-back when I played, but I never had one!”
United now have four goalkeepers on their books following Tom Heaton’s summer arrival, who joins De Gea, Henderson and Lee Grant at the club.

It has been speculated that one shot-stopper will have to depart after Heaton signed a two-year deal.
But Solskjaer has shut down those rumours, as he remarked: “It depends on the characters you’ve got and how they gel. It’s healthy competition.
“If you’re too comfortable, I don’t think you get the best out of yourself.
“You need an edge and you need an edge of ‘if I don’t perform, someone else is going to take my place’, but it has to be healthy for the team and healthy for the group.
“If it’s toxic and it’s energy-sapping that’s not great. Last year it was a new situation for David and a new situation for Dean. This year, let’s see how it works out.”

Incoming Man Utd star Raphael Varane set to fly to UK today and will sign contract after quarantine and medical

RAPHAEL VARANE is reportedly set to fly out to England today to finalise his move to Manchester United from Real Madrid. The Red Devils have already agreed a deal with Los Blancos rising to £42.7million to secure the French centre-back’s services.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made signing the 28-year-old a key priority this summer as he looked to bring in a suitable partner for Harry Maguire.
And Los Blancos were forced to accept a cut-price deal for Varane who was poised to become a free agent in 2022.
After ten years spent at Madrid where he won three LaLiga titles and four Champions League crowns, the World Cup winner was keen for a fresh challenge.
The ex-Lens ace is believed to be ready to put pen to paper on a four-year deal which will be signed after he completes his medical and quarantines in the UK.
Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano tweeted: “Raphael Varane update. He’s ready to fly to Manchester today.
“The Visa issue is finally to be resolved in the next few hours – original plan was to fly earlier this week.
“Now: quarantine, medical and then official announcement. Contract [2025] into his agents hands.”
Before adding: “Confirmed. Raphael Varane ready to fly to Manchester today, contract until June 2025 + option 2026 set to be signed after quarantine and medical.”
BETTING SPECIAL – GET LEICESTER AT 60/1 OR MAN CITY AT 30/1

United legend Gary Neville has praised the imminent arrival of Varane at the Theatre of Dreams along with the £73m purchase of Jadon Sancho.
He told Sky Sports: “I think Varane is really exciting. Sancho’s exciting but it was almost inevitable that was going to happen.”
Neville then continued: “Varane is exciting and I think last season, every United fan, every commentator, pundit, fan and analyst watched United and said, ‘They need a partner for Harry Maguire’, and they’ve got one.
“He’s a good age, got massive experience, he’s got a good centre-back alongside him. In fact, he’s got a good back four.
“So he’s not coming into a team where he’s having to hold it together. He’s, you could argue, the last piece of the jigsaw in the sense that the rest of them are doing a pretty good job.”

Goalkeeper Tom Heaton has arrived on a free, while the Red Devils have splashed out £73million to bring in winger Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund.
And United have also reached an agreement with Real Madrid for defender Raphael Varane in a deal potentially rising to £42.7m.

The news outlet states that United need to sell to buy, with ten players understood to have been made available for transfer.
It has been claimed that United are looking to recoup £100m, with Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial, Phil Jones and Diogo Dalot up for sale.
Andreas Pereira, Daniel James, Alex Telles, Axel Tuanzebe and Brandon Williams are also believed to have been deemed as surplus to requirements.
And United are also said to be prepared to cash in on World Cup winner Paul Pogba, who has just a year left to run on his contract at the Theatre of Dreams.
Paris Saint-Germain have been heavily linked with a £50m move for the ex-Juventus ace should he decide against extending his stay in England.

Telles, who joined from Porto last summer, suffered the blow in training at Pennyhill Park prior to the Red Devils’ 4-2 pre-season defeat against QPR.

He will miss the Premier League clashes against Leeds, Southampton and Wolves this month with the player not expected to return until September.
Commenting on his injury last week, boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: “Unfortunately, it’s worse news on Alex Telles than we hoped for.

However, he has struggled to find any suitors since leaving the Bundesliga champions.
Juventus, AC Milan, Napoli and Roma have all been credited with an interest in the German centre-back.
But, according to Calciomercato.it, Boateng has his heart set on a move to Old Trafford.
The Red Devils have already agreed a deal in principle for France defender Raphael Varane.
It is unknown if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is in the market for another defender, given his capture of the Real Madrid star.
Jose Mourinho’s Roma have made contact with Boateng’s camp, but it is believed the World Cup winner wants to play for a club in next season’s Champions League.
Spain is said to be another possible destination, with Sevilla, who finished fourth in LaLiga last term, reportedly keen on the 6ft 3in star.

Boateng was a youth product at Hertha Berlin, before he made his name at Hamburger.
In 2010, Manchester City paid £11million for his services, but he failed to impress and was shipped out a season later to Bayern Munich.
He spent the next 10 years with the Bavarians – winning the Bundesliga nine times, as well as two Champions League titles before he was released.

Man Utd star Andreas Pereira wanted by Turkish giants Fenerbahce in summer transfer after ‘Tony Yeboah goal’ in friendly

MANCHESTER United star Andreas Pereira has become a shock target for Fenerbahce, following his wonder strike in a pre-season friendly. The 25-year-old Belgian-born midfielder struck a sumptuous right-foot volley in a 2-2 draw with Brentford reminiscent of Tony Yeboah’s goal for Leeds against Liverpool back in 1995.

Pereira moved to the Red Devils in 2015, but has struggled to cement a place in United’s first team.
During his time at the club, he has been loaned out to three different clubs, including Granada, Valencia and Lazio.
At the end of the last campaign, the Serie A giants enquired about signing Pereira on a permanent deal – but were told to stump up around £21million.
Instead, Lazio turned their attentions to Felipe Anderson, who they snapped up from West Ham in a £3m deal.
Now Fenerbahce have thrown their hat in the ring, along with an unnamed Premier League club, for Pereira’s services.
COMPETITION: SPOT THE BALL TO WIN A CAR AND CASH

The Turkish giants have enquired about his transfer valuation, but are said to be reluctant to pay his £21m fee.
According to the report by TNT Sports, United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer kept in regular contact with Pereira when he was on loan in Italy.
Solskjaer is reportedly wary of losing the player, who he approved a new contract for in 2019, if Paul Pogba does leave for PSG.
