Denis Law made Man Utd what they are today, he was Alex Ferguson’s idol and simply ‘The King’ of Old Trafford

DENIS LAW was simply nicknamed ‘The King’.His goal-scoring exploits will forever hold a place for him in the pantheon of greats in world football.

He is immortalised with statues at either end of Old Trafford.
One stands inside the Stretford End that so adored him. Another is outside the East Stand.
His famous celebratory hand in their air with George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton either side of him.
They are looking up towards Sir Matt Busby on a plinth attached to the back of the stand smiling down at his greatest players across a forecourt.
Every day people have their pictures taken in front of it.
Those three simply made Manchester United the worldwide and much loved name they are today.

When flickering images in black and white of Law – who revealed he is SIXTH member of the 1968 United squad to have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s on Thursday – reached all corners of the world their global fan-base had it’s foundations.
He simply did what football fans love to see the most, score goals and lots of them.
He hit 237 in 404 games between 1962-73 for United and won two titles and the FA Cup.
Law also helped United to that famous 1968 European Cup win but sadly missed out on the final himself due to injury.
He began his career at Huddersfield where he still made welcome returns to watch them most recently during their spell in the Premier League.
From there he signed for Manchester City in 1960 for a then-British record £55,000 and a year later set a new record fee for a British player when he joined Torino in Italy for £110,000.
That went up to £115,000 when after a year, and failing to settle in Italy he joined United.
It was at Old Trafford he won millions of fans worldwide not least one Alex Ferguson for whom Law was his hero.
    ‘MY HERO’
Ferguson said: “Denis Law was my hero as a player. I idolised him.
“When I first met him I was so excited. It was at a game in Paris, he had played in the first half and we went for a cup of tea afterwards.
“I thought: ‘This is it, I’ve made it, I’m having a cup of tea with Denis Law!’
“For me, he epitomised everything a Scotsman is about. He was daring and courageous, he had that bravado about him and he had style. He was a truly fantastic footballer.”
Fantastic enough to still be the only Scottish player ever to be awarded the Ballon d’Or, handed to him in 1964.
Law and Ferguson remain close friends with the former United boss mucking in to run the bar at the family home when Law once celebrated a landmark birthday.
It is the landmark moments on a football pitch that he will be remembered for mostly even if one particularly is shrowded in myth.
Having returned to Manchester City for a final season his back-heeled winner at the end of the 1973-74 season is often earmarked as the goal that sent United down.
Law did not celebrate as he feared that is exactly what it had done, but other results on the day actually made it inconsequential.

Law, Charlton and Best make up the most famous of statues outside Old TraffordCredit: PA
His last professional game came at the start of the following season scoring in a 2-1 win over Oldham and he retired on August 6, 1974 with manager Tony Book having told him that he would only be involved in the reserves.
He went on to become a much-loved pundit and anyone who met him loved him for his cheeky sense of humour and infectious smile.
That was even evident in his emotional statement revealing his Alzheimer’s which has been linked to heading the ball amongst many players from his day including his teammate Sir Bobby Charlton who is also suffering.
“However the time has come to tackle this head on, excuse the pun,” said Law.
Admired far and wide long after his playing days were finished even Dennis Bergkamp was named after him although Dutch authorities insisted his name was spelt with two ‘n’s so it didn’t sound like Denise!
He can still be seen at Old Trafford most recently to witness the thrilling 5-1 win over Leeds United last Saturday.
A man who has fought back from prostate cancer now faces a battle that he admits in his statement he simply cannot win.
In his emotive statement he did not ask for sympathy and made a heartfelt plea that if the Covid-19 Pandemic may have taught us anything it is to be kinder to each other something he hopes continues.
The outpouring of love that will head Law’s way following his statement will show just how fondly he is held in the hearts of all football fans. More

Man Utd legend Denis Law reveals he is suffering from dementia aged 81 in emotional statement with ‘memory evading’

DENIS LAW has revealed he is suffering from Alzheimer’s in an emotional statement about his condition. The legendary Manchester United and Scotland goalscorer says he has experienced anger, frustration, confusion and distress due to the condition, which he believes was not helped by the Covid-19 lockdown.

There has been much research and debate into how much heading the ball has led to Alzheimer’s for a number of ex players something Law also makes reference to.
Law, 81, said: “I am at the point where I feel I want to be open about my condition. I have been diagnosed with ‘mixed dementia’, which is more than one type of dementia, in my case this being Alzheimer’s and Vascular dementia.
“This has been an extremely difficult year for everyone and the long periods of isolation have certainly not helped.
“It is an incredibly challenging and problematic disease and I have witnessed many friends go through this.
“You hope that it won’t happen to you, even make jokes about it whilst ignoring the early signs because you don’t want it to be true. You get angry, frustrated, confused and then worried, worried for your family, as they will be the ones dealing with it.
“However the time has come to tackle this head on, excuse the pun. I recognise how my brain is deteriorating and how my memory evades me when I don’t want it to and how this causes me distress in situations that are beyond my control.

“I do understand what is happening and that is why I want to address my situation now whilst I am able, because I know there will be days when I don’t understand and I hate the thought of that right now.
“In the height of the pandemic I said I hoped that if one positive was to come out of it, it would be that it would make people kinder to each other, so that’s what I am hoping for now.”
Law started his career at Huddersfield, had two spells at Manchester City and played for Torino in Italy.
But it was at Old Trafford from 1962-73 where he made his name scoring 237 goals in 404 games.
He won two titles with United and the FA Cup and helped them to the 1968 European Cup Final where they beat Benfica although missed out on the game due to injury.
Law said that he wanted to make this statement about his condition now while he felt still able to and said that he does not want people to feel sad for him as he has felt ‘lucky’ to have had the experiences in life he has.
He said: “I don’t want people to be saddened if I forget places, people or dates because you need to remember I enjoyed all those memories and I am lucky to have experienced what I have in my life…a loving and supportive family, a great career doing what I loved and getting paid to do it and lifelong friends.”

Law, who also scored 30 goals in 55 games for Scotland, apologised to autograph hunters still wanting his signature saying he was simply unable to sign things anymore.
He said: “I have good days and bad days and aim to take each day as it comes adjusting my lifestyle accordingly.
“I hung up my football boots a long time ago  and now it’s time to put my signing days behind me too, so apologies to anyone who has sent me anything but I am just not able.”
Law was in attendance at last Saturday’s thrilling 5-1 win over Leeds and says he hopes to continue watching United who he clearly believes are on the up again.
He said: “I am trying to be positive and determined to continue watching my club, Manchester United at Old Trafford, hopefully this will be a season of success and I am excited by the new signings that Ole and the club have made.
“Also where possible I would like to continue my involvement with the ‘Denis Law Legacy Trust’, the work the staff and volunteers do in the community is amazing and it makes a real difference.
What is Alzheimer’s disease, how can I see the signs and symptoms? The damage caused to the brain by Alzheimer’s disease causes the symptoms commonly associated with dementia.
Indeed, it is the most common trigger for dementia.
Alzheimer’s disease is named after the doctor who first described it in medical literature, Alois Alzheimer.
It is physical disease that affects the brain, and affects more than 520,000 people in the UK.
A hallmark of the disease is the build-up of amyloid beta proteins in the brain, to cause plaques.
This results in the loss of connections between nerve cells in the brain, and ultimately the death of those cells and a loss of brain tissue.
Those people living with Alzheimer’s also have a shortage of some key chemicals in the brain, which help transmit messages.
As the disease progresses and begins to interfere with a person’s life they may:

lose common items including keys and glasses around the house
struggle to find the word they are looking for in conversation
    forget recent conversations or events
get lost in a familiar place, or while on a familiar journey
forget important anniversaries, birthdays or appointments

“I know the road ahead will be hard, demanding, painful and ever changing and so ask for understanding and patience as this will not be an easy journey especially for the people who love you the most.”
Denis’s daughter Di who previously worked for United as the Chief Press Officer is doing the ‘Thames Bridges Trek’ on September 11 to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society.
Law said: “As a family, we have been offered support by Alzheimer’s Society and have chosen to fundraise for the charity to help support its crucial work.
“Alzheimer’s Society’s services have never been in more need, used over 5.5 million times since March 2020, and are a lifeline to thousands of families who are also facing a dementia diagnosis.
“The charity is also doing amazing work with the sports industry, with its Sport United Against Dementia campaign, which I fully support. This really could make the biggest difference to former players, players, and fans alike. Thank you.”
Following the legend’s announcement, United tweeted: “Everybody is with you in this battle, Denis.
“We are in admiration of your openness, your bravery and your humility to be open about your dementia diagnosis.”

Kate Lee, chief executive at Alzheimer’s Society said: “We have offered support to Denis Law and the whole family.
“We are incredibly thankful to the family for choosing to raise vital funds for us and hope Denis’s bravery in coming forward will encourage many others to seek the help they need, for which we are hugely grateful.
“We’ve seen too many sporting heroes impacted by the condition, which is why our Sport United Against Dementia campaign is needed now more than ever.
“It’s never been more important to fund crucial research and our vital support services and ensure that right now, past and present players, as well as fans, know our services are here and can get the dedicated dementia support they deserve.”

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Pereira is set to move to Flamengo on loan, with just the ‘final details to be sorted’.
Pereira has been at United since 2011, scoring four goals in 75 games.
However, he was shipped off on loan to Lazio last season after failing to win over Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
And following the £73million signing of Jadon Sancho, Pereira is set for another campaign on the sidelines.
The playmaker is believed to be a target for Everton boss Rafa Benitez.
And Turkish giants Fenerbahce have also made an approach after being impressed by his pre-season performances.

Pereira has already revealed he’s eager for minutes elsewhere, hinting at a move to Vincent Kompany’s Anderlecht.
And last month saw Pereira make a ‘come-and-get-me’ plea to Lazio for a second spell.
However, it now seems Pereira is ready to join Flamengo.

The Samba side are currently wrapping up a loan for Chelsea misfit Kenedy.
They already boast stars including Gabriel Barbosa and Filipe Luis.
And Flamengo are now ready to give Pereira the action he craves in order to make the plane to Qatar.

Man Utd defender Brandon Williams in advanced talks with Norwich over loan transfer

BRANDON WILLIAMS is reportedly set to depart Manchester United on loan with Norwich in advanced talks to bring him to Carrow Road.SunSport exclusively revealed in May how the Canaries were eyeing up a move for the 20-year-old defender.

It is understood that the youngster, who can play at either left-back or right-back, is keen for regular first-team football after limited action at Old Trafford.
Williams featured in just four Premier League games last season with Luke Shaw and Alex Telles preferred instead at left-back.
And his chances of breaking into the starting XI appear slim this term with Diogo Dalot expected to deputise for right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
Southampton and Newcastle had been keen on the England youth international.
But according to Sky Sports, it is newly-promoted side Norwich that are winning the race to secure his services.
However they state that the deal to take the player to Norfolk is unlikely to be concluded this week.

Williams is now expected to battle for a place in Norwich’s starting XI alongside right-back Max Aarons and Greek left-back Dimitris Giannoulis.
His arrival at Norwich will be the club’s second loan signing of the summer after they brought in central midfielder Billy Gilmour from Chelsea.
And Daniel Farke remains on the lookout for a new centre-back, with free agent Gary Cahill understood to be an option.

Another player that United could be willing to loan out is Ivorian winger Amad Diallo.
It has been claimed that Championship club Sheffield United are interested in the 19-year-old, along with Crystal Palace and Basel.
Diallo appeared in nine games under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last term after joining United for £37million from Atalanta.

Man Utd legend Rio Ferdinand calls out Graeme Souness for Paul Pogba criticism after his four assists vs Leeds

MANCHESTER UNITED legend Rio Ferdinand has called out Graeme Souness over his refusal to praise Paul Pogba. The French midfielder, who has entered the final 12 months of his Old Trafford contract, produced four assists as the Red Devils thrashed Leeds 5-1 on Saturday.

Sky Sports pundit Souness created a stir after only offering faint praise to Pogba, a player he has frequently heavily criticised, following that scintillating display and claiming Mason Greenwood was the real ‘star’ performer.
Fellow pundit Micah Richards highlighted Pogba’s four assists, to which Souness replied: “We expect that from a £100million man.”
Ferdinand initially defended Souness on his Vibe with Five YouTube podcast, saying: “I don’t think Graeme Souness articulated it but I believe he thinks… Let’s not get out of our pram about this, let’s not go overboard, let me see this for the next three months, I want consistency.
“I think that’s where Souness’ mind is at with Paul Pogba. If we’re being honest, consistency is probably one of the factors that goes against Paul Pogba in his Man United career.”
Ferdinand then criticised Souness’ unwillingness to praise Pogba’s historic achievement of creating four goals – a feat that only six players have ever managed in a Premier League match previously.
And he also hinted that Souness has broader issues with the former Juventus man.

Ferdinand said: “When a man produces four assists on day one of the season, you’ve got to put your feelings to one side and say ‘you know what, well played’ because it doesn’t happen often.”
Souness and Richards had a tense argument over Pogba’s conduct regarding his Old Trafford future at the weekend – leading to the Scot having to turn away from the camera to compose himself.
Ferdinand admits Pogba’s future is unclear but believes the 28-year-old wants to be a champion at the club.

He added: “’I think if he smells success and a winning period, there’s something that says to me that he’ll go: ‘I want to be a part of it’.
‘”That’s all he’s come (back) for. When I speak to Paul, all he talks about is wanting to win. He’s got a burning desire to do that for Man United.
“He grew up (at United) as a kid, he wants to be known as one of the guys that was part of a winning team.
“If he walked out of Man United, I know for a fact that Paul Pogba would look back and go: ‘(I) didn’t win the Premier League, didn’t win the Champions League. That’s not what I came back for’. There would be unfinished business.”

    How Swansea announced the news
Now after watching his new team draw at home to Sheffield United on Saturday and undergoing a medical on Sunday, the Championship side have confirmed his arrival today.
And they did it in hilarious fashion, quoting a famous tweet from Kim Kardashian that read: “He’s here and he’s perfect!”
Laird said: “I am buzzing, I cannot wait to get started and get out on the pitch.
“This is a big club, a very big club, and the type of club I want to play for.
“I played here once before at the stadium when I was 16 (for Manchester United U23s) and I really enjoyed it.
“It was exciting to watch the game against Sheffield United, the fans here are intense and I cannot wait to play in front of them. I just want to get out there and experience it.”

SunSport reported yesterday how Championship rivals Blackpool were trying to hijack the move but the lure of working with Martin again proved too strong.
Laird added: “I also love working with Russell and I just know he can get the best out of me.
“The big thing about him is trust. When I came in from United, he told me exactly how it was straight away.
“I just learnt so much in that short amount of time, it was unbelievable so I knew if I worked with him again, I could continue to improve and develop.
“I love the style of play. I think it is the best way to play football, it is entertaining, and it is how you want to see your team play, getting those passes in. That’s what I enjoy and that’s why I am here.”
Laird played 25 times for MK Dons last season, as Russell Martin’s side finished 13th in League One.
He provided four assists during his time at Stadium MK.

PSG willing to offer Paul Pogba eye-watering £510k-a-week salary to prise him away from Man Utd next summer

PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN are reportedly willing to pay Paul Pogba over £500,000-a-week to sign him.The star played a starring role as Manchester United thrashed Leeds 5-1 in their Premier League opener on Saturday at Old Trafford.

The midfielder registered a staggering four assists in the rout.
The France international has been linked with a move away from the Manchester giants for months after failing to agree a new contract.
He has entered the final 12 months of his current deal and has so far failed to agree an extension.
Now The Telegraph claims that PSG are willing to offer him a mega package to get him on a free transfer at the end of the season.
The report states the French giants are willing to pay him £510,000-a-week to get his signature.
Many believed that Pogba could depart United this summer so that they could secure a transfer fee.

But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer remains hopeful that they will convince him to stay at Old Trafford.
PSG’s successful pursuit of Lionel Messi and his huge financial package meant they had to shelve plans for Pogba this term.
But it seems that the ex-Juventus man will be their top target come the summer of 2022.
Bruno Fernandes, who scored a hat-trick against Leeds thanks to the help of Pogba, sang the praises of his teammate’s quality afterwards.
He said: “We know the quality of Paul, that is not for discussion.
“We know what he can do, and we saw that today. He is working for us and we know he can make this performance.

“Every season I want to be better than the last one, so with every goal and performance, I want to do better. I have started with three goals but there is a long way to go.
“We know the quality of the players who come in now, the team was already good and we saw that last season, even though we did not achieve the trophies.
“The team is growing up and now we try to do better.
“The statement today was against Leeds now and the next game will be against Southampton, so we will focus by game. We can do something with this mentality.”

Man Utd’s worst transfers XI post-Sir Alex Ferguson, including Fred, Di Maria and Depay that cost a staggering £325m

SIR ALEX FERGUSON left Manchester United with the Premier League trophy – but a raft of bad signings has seen it taken away with little sign of returning.A massive £323.7million has been splashed on 11 particularly dodgy deals.

The worst XI of bad signings predominantly features attackers as the Red Devils failed to replace the likes of Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie.
Romelu Lukaku cost an initial £75m and United struggled to find takers when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer decided to offload the Belgian to Inter where he thrived, before re-joining Chelsea.
A promising first season was lost with a drop-off in 2018-19, scoring at an average of one every three games before leaving for Italy.
At the very least, Lukaku provided some memorable moments but the same cannot be said for Angel Di Maria.
The winger arrived with much fanfare in 2014 and quickly dropped off the pace, shepherded out to Paris Saint-Germain where he painfully found the form he lacked in England.
The next expensive error was Fred who joined for £52m, but he still has time to prove himself at Old Trafford.
In the slightly more affordable but nonetheless useless category are Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Morgan Schneiderlin, who came in for £30m and £27m respectively.
Depay inherited the hallowed No7 shirt but failed to do it justiceCredit: PA:Empics Sport
Still, United recouped most of the fee they spent on French anchor man Schneiderlin when he joined Everton but Mkhitaryan’s exit saw Alexis Sanchez arrive – making the Chilean’s initial fee cheap and yet still a huge disappointment.
Among those who arrived with potential and waited until after leaving to go on to great things is Memphis Depay.
Now a star at Barcelona and with the Dutch national team, his baffling form in the 2015/16 season showed that United had lost their touch when turning young gems into superstars.
Many United fans point to executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward as the chief architect of these abysmal deals.
While replacing the peerless David Gill was a tough assignment, and finding a man capable of replacing Fergie nigh-on impossible, there are serious questions over his approach.
Not only are these players examples of bad deals, managers such as Jose Mourinho were dismayed that not enough players were bought.
Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind were picked up in 2014 off the back of good World Cup campaigns – a strategy that rarely pays off and cost the club over £30m.
And although Matteo Darmian was an Italian international when plucked from Torino, Louis van Gaal’s exit cast him to the fringes.
Rounding off this worst XI are two short-term signings that never got to grips with the Premier League.
Few have flopped in the Prem like Di MariaCredit: PA:Empics Sport
Falcao struggled both at United and ChelseaCredit: PA:Empics Sport

Perhaps the Red Devils thought they were pulling off a cunning piece of Andrea Pirlo-esque business when bringing in Bastian Schweinsteiger but, at 31, the German was far past his best during an 18-month spell.
Radamel Falcao was still in his late-20s when arriving on loan in 2014 on a £6m fee and massive wage combination yet hit just four goals in 29 games.
Of course, not all of Fergie’s signings hit the right note – just ask Kleberson, Eric Djemba Djemba or Juan-Sebastian Veron.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will not park in the manager’s car parking spot – as he believes it still belongs to Sir Alex Ferguson More
