MANCHESTER UNITED midfielder Scott McTominay has revealed he will be spending some time on the sidelines after undergoing groin surgery. In a post to Instagram the Scotland international revealed it to be ‘minor surgery,’ but the news still comes as a surprise to Red Devils fans.

The 24-year-old started the opening game of the season against Leeds and came on as a 76th minute sub in Sunday’s draw against Southampton.
But he has now undergone successful surgery after playing through ‘significant pain’ in the opening two games of the Premier League season.
In an Instagram post on Thursday morning, McTominay said: “Just to let you all know I’ve had minor surgery on an issue which has needed managing for the last couple of months.
“I hate missing games so to be missing Wolves on the weekend & the international break is so disappointing but that’s part & parcel of the game.
“Wishing all the boys the best of luck & I will be back sooner than you think.”
And in an official club statement, Manchester United said: “Scott has undergone surgery for an ongoing groin injury that was causing significant pain when playing.

“Having tried all other treatment options in pre-season, surgery was deemed necessary to resolve the issue.
“We hope to have him back soon.”
McTominay will now miss this weekend’s Premier League clash against Wolves and Scotland’s World Cup Qualifiers against Denmark, Moldova and Andorra.
It’s unclear whether he will be back in time for United’s clash against Newcastle on September 11.
The 24-year-old has been a regular face in Manchester United’s first team in recent seasons, playing 135 times for the club after making his senior debut in 2017.
He was a mainstay in Ole Gunnar Solskajer’s side last season, making 49 appearances in all competitions.

His injury has fuelled rumours that Ole Gunnar Solskajer could dip into the transfer market for another central midfielder with no time frame given on McTominay’s return to action.
The Red Devils have been linked with a number of central midfielders this summer including the likes of Saul Niguez, Ruben Neves and Eduardo Camavinga.
But with just five days left until deadline day Red Devils bosses will have to work quickly to get any potential deal over the line.

Man Utd make Erling Haaland top striker transfer target with Solskjaer and John Murtough in total agreement

MANCHESTER UNITED have reportedly decided Erling Haaland is their No1 transfer target. The Red Devils are on the hunt for a new striker to succeed veteran Edinson Cavani.
Erling Haaland is the No1 striker transfer target for Manchester UnitedCredit: Getty
And according to the Manchester Evening News, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and football director John Murtough are in ‘mutual agreement’ Haaland is their preferred option.
The report adds the United brass – including Solskjaer and Murtough – will sit down for their first recruitment meeting.
And top of the agenda will be working out a strategy to land the club’s next No9.
Cavani’s contract expires in June, by which time he will be 35, so a centre forward is a priority for summer 2022.
Harry Kane has been linked previously but is staying put at Tottenham for now and would prefer to join Manchester City.
Kylian Mbappe will likely be a Real Madrid player by then – either signing this week or arranging a free transfer for next year.

And United look on course to go after Borussia Dortmund ace Haaland.
The 21-year-old has already established himself as one of the very best strikers in world football.
The fact that his £64million release clause kicks in next summer makes him an even more appealing target.
Reports this week stated United may well be at the front of the queue to secure a cut-price deal – especially because the ex-Molde man ‘dreams’ of playing in the Premier League.
Norwegian Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be hoping his personal ties with his compatriot can also ensure United win the race for his signature – despite being turned down in late 2019 when Haaland joined Dortmund.
However, any attempt to sign Haaland would mean having to deal with his controversial agent Mino Raiola.
It is thought he would demand a £34m fee for himself as well as whopping £825,000-a-week wages for his client.
Haaland looks on course to remain with the Bundesliga side for the 2021-22 season, which he has started with five goals in five games after 41 in 41 last term.
Dortmund boss Marco Rose is confident his main man is going nowhere at the end of the window which saw Jadon Sancho swap Dortmund for Old Trafford.
He told Bild: “He still has a long-term contract with us [until 2024].

“Just because the public is constantly talking about him leaving next summer, that doesn’t necessarily have to be the case.
“In the end, Erling has to decide for himself where he sees his future.
“In any case, we are happy that he is currently playing for us – and, who knows, possibly it’ll be even more than just one season if we write an extraordinary story here.”

Man Utd join Saul Niguez transfer race and face battle with Chelsea with Eduardo Camavinga also interesting Solskjaer

MANCHESTER UNITED are reportedly set to battle Chelsea for the transfer of Saul Niguez. The central midfielder is ready to end his time with Atletico Madrid for a new challenge in the Premier League.
Saul Niguez could be heading to the Premier League with Man Utd and Chelsea interestedCredit: Getty
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea ‘opened talks’ with the 26 year old ‘days ago’
There is ‘an official bid on the table’ which is believed to be a loan with a buy option.
But United are set to show their hand – although they remain keen on Rennes wonderkid Eduardo Camavinga.
The French youngster looks set to leave Rennes this transfer window which closes on August 31, with Paris Saint-Germain his most likely destination.
Camavinga is reportedly on the verge of joining PSG for just £25.7million, half of Rennes’ original asking price.
This is because Rennes want to cash in him while they still have the chance as his contract ends next summer.
BETTING SPECIAL – GET £50 IN FREE BETS WITH WILLIAM HILL

But although his move to the Ligue 1 giants seems to be a foregone conclusion, PSG’s excessive spending this summer has given United a glimmer of hope.
Should Chelsea be the Niguez’s preferred destination, there are also reports that Timo Werner could be used as part of a player-swap transfer.
Niguez still has five years left on his current contract at the Wanda Metropolitano.
But having already spent £97.5million on Romelu Lukaku – who in turn has pushed Werner down the pecking order – the opportunity to do a player exchange could appeal to both clubs.
As reported by OK Diario, a deal may well be on the cards.

Atleti boss Diego Simeone is a fan of Werner, whose game time looks set to be cut significantly at Stamford Bridge this season.
Niguez is a year older at 26 but they are on similar wages – Werner earns around £270,000 per week at Chelsea – making a switch financially viable.
The Blues and Atletico have done plenty of transfer deals over recent years with the likes of Diego Costa, Thibaut Courtois, Alvaro Morata and Felipe Luis.

Man Utd star Van de Beek so determined to fight for place that his agents no longer inform him of transfer interest

DONNY VAN DE BEEK is so determined to make it at Manchester United that his agents don’t bother telling him of transfer interest. The 24-year-old Dutch midfielder, who joined from Ajax for £39million, remains on the fringes of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s starting XI.

He has failed to see any pitch-time in United’s opening two games – a 5-1 thrashing of Leeds and a 1-1 draw at Southampton.
But according to The Times, Van de Beek is refusing to call time on his United future.
The newspaper claims that ‘his representatives received offers in the close season’.
But these were not sent on to the player as ‘he made it clear earlier in the summer that he wanted to stay’.
But a lack of game time for the Red Devils could see his international dreams come crashing down.
Holland boss Louis Van Gaal is looking to get the country back to past glories, and is expected to only select match-fit players.

And he has already voiced his concerns over Van de Beek’s situation at Old Trafford.
Speaking in December, the 70-year-old told Ziggo Sport: “I do hope for Van de Beek that his time will come at United, but in all honesty? No, he hasn’t made the right choice.
“When you know Fernandes and Pogba are there, you don’t go there.

“Those are the positions where Van de Beek is at his best.”
The 24-year-old endured a desperately disappointing first season in England, starting only four Premier League games for his new club.
Disaster then struck when an injury caused him to miss Euro 2020 with Holland.
He is behind Paul Pogba, Bruno Fernandes, Scott McTominay, Fred and Nemanja Matic in the United midfield.

Gary Neville urges Man Utd to sign Harry Kane and can’t understand why they aren’t going ‘extra step’ in transfer window

MANCHESTER UNITED legend Gary Neville has urged the club to rival City in the race to prise Harry Kane away from Tottenham. The 28-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to join the Etihad this summer in a huge transfer.
Tottenham striker Harry Kane has been linked with a big-money move away from North LondonCredit: Getty
Despite City being desperate to secure the England skipper’s services, boss Pep Guardiola has stated he wouldn’t be fussed if they didn’t manage to sign him.
And Neville believes the Red Devils should look to bring him to Old Trafford if they wish to challenge for Premier League title.
United haven’t won the top-flight championship since 2013, and Neville has stated that despite this summer’s arrivals of Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane, the squad isn’t strong enough to win the league.
He told Sky Sports: “My gut feeling is [Sancho and Varane] won’t have the same impact on Manchester United as Alisson and [Virgil] van Dijk to get them up to that 90-95 points they will need to win the league.
“I think they will still be short. Chelsea, you see what they have done with Romelu Lukaku. You see that Van Dijk has come back for Liverpool.
“You can see that City have come in for Jack Grealish and Harry Kane. If they get Kane there is a massive problem for United.

“I am struggling to understand why Manchester United are not going that extra step in this transfer window.
“With regards to Manchester United, they have always gone after the best player in the Premier League, the best English or British player in the Premier League, historically.”
Neville continued: “Anthony Martial, Daniel James, Jesse Lingard, you are talking about potentially offloading a lot of wages there, potentially getting some transfer fees in.
“Why are they not going for Harry Kane this week? Because I believe that if Harry Kane entered Manchester United you could get up to 90 to 95 points.
“Without him, they are still going to have to replace Edinson Cavani and Martial next summer. Martial is not going to do it, Cavani has only got one year left.
“They are going to have to get a centre-forward at some point, why not get the man now to give them that impetus to get towards that 95 points? Because I don’t think they can just with Sancho and Varane.”
Spurs gaffer Nuno Espirito Santo remained coy on Kane’s future after the club’s 1-0 win against Wolves on Sunday, where the striker came off the bench.

Asked if Kane would feature in Thursday’s Europa Conference League play-off second leg against Pacos de Ferreira – with Spurs 1-0 down – Nuno said: “I can’t answer that.
“It’s too soon. Now we are going to recover and we assess the next morning, like always. He did well, he helped the team.
“He is still in the process of improving his fitness but he is one of the best in the world.”

He even posted on Valentine’s Day of him getting strangled against West Ham, where he captioned the image: “Don’t forget to show some love today.”
Unfortunately for Arsenal, Keane did not show his softer side as he tore into Mikel Arteta’s side following their 2-0 defeat against Chelsea.
Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: “It was very very comfortable (for Chelsea).
“They scored two, could have been five, six, seven maybe and I think if they really went for it in the second half.
“We saw the quality of Chelsea players, their confidence. They had a swagger, Chelsea, and you could see the shortcomings of Arsenal and on a match day there’s no hiding place.

“And it’s going to be a long old season for Arsenal.
“You can’t keep looking back, you have to look at some of the senior players that are hanging around. There’s doubts over some of them lads. It’s hard to get that foundation.
“The younger players need a helping hand from these senior players, they need to stand up and be counted and prove what playing for a club like Arsenal should mean to them.”

Man Utd interested in Noni Madueke transfer as ex-Tottenham star, 19, continues blistering goalscoring form for PSV

MANCHESTER UNITED are reportedly competing with Tottenham and Leicester in the race to sign PSV winger Noni Madueke. The 19-year-old has earned rave reviews during his time in Holland since departing Spurs’ academy for the Eredivisie side in June 2018.

Madueke, who rejected a proposal from United three years ago, cemented himself as a regular in PSV’s first team last campaign where he chipped in with nine goals and eight assists in 32 games.
And the England youth international – valued at around £20million by the Dutch giants – already has five strikes to his name from just seven outings this term.
According to the Daily Mail, scouts from the Red Devils, Spurs and the Foxes were in attendance for his recent appearance in Wednesday’s Champions League qualifying clash against Benfica.
All three clubs are said to have had representatives at the Estadio da Luz where Benfica edged out a 2-1 win in the first leg.
They also state it’s not just English clubs that are interested in the teenager, with Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich watching the player.
Serie A side’s Juventus, Roma and Atalanta also had the chance to see the forward in action against the Portuguese outfit.

Meanwhile Sky Sports have suggested that Wolves are also monitoring Madueke, though his price tag could prove too much for them.
And SunSport reported last month how Crystal Palace boss Patrick Vieira is an admirer of the youngster.
Though the Eagles also have Arsenal ace Reiss Nelson and RB Leipzig’s Ademola Lookman on their shortlist.
Madueke spoke to SunSport in December where he revealed how the club’s U19s coach Ruud van Nistelrooy has been honing his finishing.

He said: “Ruud helped me a lot last year, taking my game to the next level and now I am just trying to get better every day.
“I have always scored nice goals but I know I needed to score easier ones — being in the right place at the right time — striker-type finishes.
“Ruud has been teaching me how to get into those positions more and, being a Manchester United fan, I know he is the master of that.”
