What number Cristiano Ronaldo could wear at Man Utd with No7 belonging to Cavani and two former options taken

CRISTIANO RONALDO is on the brink of completing his stunning return to Manchester United.A deal between the Red Devils and Juventus was agreed on Friday.
Questions marks remain over which number Cristiano Ronaldo will take on his return to Manchester United
Over the weekend, Ronaldo completed his medical and, with personal terms sorted over a two-year, £480,000-a-week contract, the transfer will be confirmed before Tuesday night’s deadline.
But it is still unclear what number the Portuguese superstar will wear at Old Trafford.
SunSport weighs up some of the possible options…
    No7
Ronaldo has become synonymous with the No7 jersey since taking the number when he first joined United in 2003.
He even uses CR7 for his own branding and range of merchandise including aftershave and boxers.
But Edinson Cavani already holds the iconic jersey at Old Trafford – and came on at Wolves wearing it on Sunday.
Prem rules state the player with the No7 at Old Trafford retains the shirt throughout the season for which it is allocated.
Section M of the rule book relating to players’ identification reads: “Before the commencement of each season each club shall allocate a different shirt number to each member of its first team squad.
“A club shall likewise allocate a shirt number to any player joining its first team squad during the season.
“While he remains with the club, a player will retain his shirt number throughout the season for which it is allocated.

“Upon a player leaving a club the shirt number allocated to him may be re-allocated.”
It means if Ronaldo is to get the No7 this term, United would need to apply for special dispensation from the Premier League – which they have never granted in their 29-year existence.
Ronaldo can still wear the No7 in the Champions League as United can allocate different numbers for European competitions.
    No28
With No7 seemingly unlikely, the No28 is another option.
Ronaldo wore No28 in his one season in the Sporting Lisbon senior side in 2002-03.

Another Uruguayan, Facundo Pellistri, is listed on the Premier League website as United’s No28.
But with the winger out on loan at Alaves this season, that could pave the way for Ronaldo to go back to his roots and looks the most likely option.
    No9
Ronaldo was forced away from his famous No7 shirt in 2009 when he made his record-breaking transfer to Real Madrid.
Los Blancos legend Raul was still at the Bernabeu for another year, though, meaning Ronaldo had to sit tight before taking the No7.
The Portugal superstar had to settle for No9 for his first season at Real MadridCredit: Getty
Like with Cavani, though, Anthony Martial already has the No9 at Old Trafford – and if they are going to swap a number it would not be the No9 over the No7, even if Ronaldo has been signed as a centre-forward.
    No17
It is a similar tale for the No17.
It was Portugal’s young No17 who lit up Euro 2004 but Fred is the Old Trafford occupierCredit: News Group Newspapers Ltd
Ronaldo burst on to the international scene at Euro 2004 as he helped Portugal to the final… wearing the No17.
But that number is currently occupied by midfielder Fred.
    No77
A bit of a rogue option could see Ronaldo go for No77.
It would be a bit random and the kind of number often used by academy stars given a shot in the first team.
But it would also keep with the No7 theme.
    No52 or No61
Again keeping with the No7 theme, Ronaldo could choose No52 or No61 – with the digits adding up to his magic number.
No16 is Amad Diallo, No25 Jadon Sancho, No34 Donny van de Beek and No43 Teden Mengi. Doh.
Add a small plus sign in between and he would be going full Ivan Zamorano mode.
    No30
He saw his great rival Lionel Messi leave Barcelona and take the No30 shirt at Paris Saint-Germain this summer.
But surely Cristiano would not copy him and take the same number, would he?
Well, the No30 is free – although like Ronaldo and No28, Messi’s first number was No30 so there is an emotional attachment for the Argentine.
    No60
Not only would this settle the GOAT debate, it would prove Ronaldo is TWICE as good Messi.
    Perhaps a bit of a long-shot.

    Best of the rest
The highest numbers currently unassigned at Old Trafford are the No12 and No15 vacated by Chris Smalling and Andreas Pereira respectively.
No24 was last Timothy Fosu-Mensah’s but Darren Fletcher had it for a long time.
Other numbers up for grabs are 32, 33, 35, 36, 37, 38, 40 and upwards. Not exactly entirely appealing for the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.

Amad Diallo’s loan transfer from Man Utd to Feyenoord CANCELLED after winger gets injured in training

MANCHESTER UNITED star Amad Diallo’s proposed loan move to Feyenoord is OFF, according to reports. The Ivorian winger is thought to have suffered an injury in training and looks set to start miss a chunk of the season.
Amad Diallo will now reportedly NOT be joining Feyenoord on loan due to injuryCredit: AFP
It has not yet been revealed what the problem is or how long the 19-year-old could be out for – just days before he was due to move to Feyenoord.
As quoted by Dutch outlet AD, Feyenoord technical director Frank Arnesen said: “He got injured, it’s cancelled.
“Too bad, everything was done. I’ve talked a lot with the people at Manchester United, but it’s more sensible to let him recover at that club.
“It may be a while before he comes back.”
Diallo’s reported injury is a huge blow to his chances of flourishing in his first full season since joining United in January.
The three-cap international managed has made just 13 senior appearances in club football, with eight coming at United.

Following Cristiano Ronaldo’s sensational Old Trafford return, boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed Diallo would move to gain experience.
Speaking ahead of his side’s 1-0 win against Wolves, the Norwegian told MUTV: “Yes I do [expect him to go out on loan].

“It’s not 100 per cent signed but we’ve agreed.
“I don’t have to say which team it is yet, but we’ve found a place that Amad feels excited about and we feel excited about.”
Sheffield United and Italian side Atalanta were also reportedly keen – but all clubs might have to wait a little longer to snap up the wonderkid.

Watch Man Utd loanee Andreas Pereira score on Flamengo debut after defensive howler against Santos

ANDREAS PEREIRA capitalised on a defensive howler to score on his Flamengo debut. The Brazilian midfielder is spending this season on loan in his father’s homeland from Manchester United.

His finish made it 4-0 on the night away at Santos after Gabriel Barbosa’s hat-trickCredit: Reuters

And he got off to the perfect start – thanks in large to the Santos blunder.
With six minutes to go in their Brazilian Serie A clash, a Santos player tried to turn out of trouble and played a wayward backpass.
But rather than picking out the centre-back, the ball rolled past him towards the penalty area.
    And Pereira took full advantage.
He latched on to the loose ball and got their before the onrushing goalkeeper.
With his first touch, he calmly slotted it into the back of the net from 17 yards.

And the 25-year-old raced away to celebrate with his new team-mates.
The goal made it 4-0 on the night for the champions away at Santos.
Striker Gabriel Barbosa smashed in a 28-minute second-half hat-trick to seal all three points.
Barbosa was subbed off in a double switch on 81 minutes after completing his treble, while Pereira came off the bench at the same time to replace Giorgian de Arrascaeta.
And within three minutes, he had his first goal.
That matches his tally for all of 2020-21, which he spent on loan at Lazio.
Pereira joined United youth set-up in 2011 from PSV Eindhoven and has 75 first-team appearances.
Unlikely to become a regular starter at Old Trafford, the former Belgium youth international – born in Duffel, Antwerp – is on his fourth loan spell after time with Granada and Valencia before Lazio and now Flamengo.
And plenty of United fans hope the goal will be enough to convince the Brazilian outfit to buy Pereira and get him off the books in Manchester.

One harshly wrote: “Yes now you better buy him.. see he’s actually good. Please I beg you just buy him.”
Another joked: “Goal of the year, hope they buy him. He’s so good.”
And a third quipped: “I’m glad he’s found his level.”

Cristiano Ronaldo’s second Man Utd debut to come vs Newcastle – but match WON’T be shown on TV

CRISTIANO RONALDO is set to make his second Manchester United debut against Newcastle – but the game is NOT on TV.The Portuguese legend – who left Old Trafford for Real Madrid in 2009 – has re-joined United after a whirlwind 24 hours.
Cristiano Ronaldo will take on Newcastle in his second Man Utd debut on September 11Credit: News Group Newspapers Ltd
Ronaldo won’t be ready to make his second debut this weekend in United’s clash with Wolves.
But he will be available for the home game against Newcastle following the international break on September 11.
Unfortunately for fans, they won’t be able to watch the game live unless they’ve nabbed a ticket for the game at the Theatre of Dreams – with neither BT Sport nor Sky Sports showing it.
The early kick-off between Crystal Palace and Tottenham – as well as the tea-time game involving Chelsea and Aston Villa – have instead been given the televised slots.
United’s game remains a 3pm start, meaning fans will have to wait for Match of the Day to catch a glimpse of Ronaldo back in the Premier League.
Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri only confirmed Ronaldo wanted to leave after three years, having joined from Madrid on Friday.

And after Premier League champions City pulled out of the race, it gave United a clear sight to re-sign the club legend.
They soon made contact with the player and Juve and quickly agreed a transfer fee and personal terms.
Ronaldo, 36, with his agent Jorge Mendes flew into Lisbon where he was due to undergo a medical.
According to Sky Sports News, the forward is most likely to be given an emotional welcome back to Old Trafford on September 11.
United host Newcastle in the league, a team Ronaldo has NEVER lost to in his ten matches against them, drawing only once too.
Current manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer spent four years with Ronaldo from 2003-2007.
And he made it clear he would welcome back the United icon and revealed international team-mate Bruno Fernandes had already been in touch.

Solskjaer said: “I didn’t think Cristiano was going to leave Juventus. But if ever he is going to move away from Juventus he knows we are here.
“We’ve always had a good communication, Bruno has been talking to him as well. He knows how we feel about him.
“He is a legend of this club, the greatest players of all time if you ask me. So let’s see what happens with him.”
Juve are believed to have wanted close to £25m for Ronaldo, who had a year left on his contract, but are thought to have receieved a package worth £21m.
And with reports he was offered a three-year deal, United were quick to announce an agreement had been met between the clubs and player.

Roy Keane reveals Cristiano Ronaldo WASN’T one of the five world-class players he played with at Man Utd

ROY KEANE played alongside some of Manchester United’s biggest names – but the Irishman claims just five were world class. And Cristiano Ronaldo was NOT one of them.
Roy Keane says Denis Irwin was world class but left Cristiano Ronaldo off his list
Keane, now 50, made the stunning revelation after United were held to a 1-1 draw with Arsenal in September 2019.
The Irishman captained United during a historically successful period for the club and won the Premier League seven times with the Red Devils.
Jamie Carragher posed the question in the Sky Sports studio and Keane’s answer surprised fans watching at home.
Keane said: “We never gave ourselves an opportunity to talk about players being world class.
“But if I look back now, you’d have to class Giggsy [Ryan Giggs].
“I always class the world-class players as lads who were doing it for nine, ten, 11 years – obviously Giggsy’s done it for a lot longer but to me, that’s the key to being a really good player: you’ve got to be consistent.

“We see players now, they have a good month and patting themselves on the back.
“You have to be good for years and years, and Giggsy would have been a prime example.”

The former Republic of Ireland international then described Mark Hughes as a ‘brilliant striker’ before adding Paul Scholes and Eric Cantona to the world class list.
But he saved his old friend, roommate and fellow Irishman Denis Irwin until last, saving special praise for the full-back.
Keane gushed: “My god, imagine if Denis Irwin was playing now.
“He could play left-back, right-back, get you a goal, knew how to defend, never injured, a brilliant guy in the dressing room.
“Denis would be world-class to me – and he’s a Corkman!”
The omission of Ronaldo will come as a surprise to most as the Portuguese superstar was the first Man Utd player to win the Ballon d’Or since George Best in 1968.
And he also scored 118 goals in 292 games for the Red Devils and helped deliver their last Champions League title in 2008.
However, he only spent two years with Keane at United and perhaps didn’t have long enough to impress the notoriously hard-to-please club legend.

Man Utd’s Champions League group should be a goal-fest but given our recent history we cannot underestimate rivals

MANCHESTER UNITED will be looking for better success in the Champions League this season following their shock exit in the group stages last time around. With the likes of Barcelona, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid in the same pot as the Red Devils, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have avoided a few of the biggest teams in Europe.

United will want to get revenge on Villarreal for their Europa League final lossCredit: AFP
Given the current strengths and weaknesses that lie within the manager and the squad, it would not be a huge surprise to see the side perform well in Europe and inconsistently in the league.
Here, SunSport takes a look at who the Premier League giants have been drawn with.
    VILLARREAL
United and Villarreal got to know each other quite well in the Europa League final a few months ago, which the Spanish side won on penalties.
Prior to the final, the two club’s record couldn’t be separated.
All four of their previous fixture have ended in goalless draws, albeit the last time clubs met was in the 2008/09 campaign.

The Yellow Submarines will prove to be a painful side once again, knowing that Solskjaer and his men have been experiencing huge difficulties in breaking down opposition that sit deep in their own half.
In addition, Emery’s men use the counter-attack to maximum effect through the likes of Alberto Moreno, new signing Arnaut Danjuma and forward Gerard Moreno.
But the Red Devils will be hoping to exact revenge on Villarreal from the Europa League upset.
Predictions: Home: Man Utd 1 Villarreal 1. Away: Villarreal 1 Man Utd 3.

    Atalanta
Known for their high-intensity football and attacking style of play, Atalanta are regarded as one of the most exciting clubs to watch in Europe.
Giano Gasperini’s team finished in third place in style last season, scoring 90 goals along the way, which was more than any other Serie A side’s tally.
This proved that they can create chances whilst dominating possession or on the counter.
Atalanta will look to mark United high up the pitch, preventing them from playing out from the back and leading to key defensive mistakes.
The Italians deserve all the plaudits and appreciation they have been receiving over the last couple of years, with them featuring in the elite European competition for three years in a row.
The team play effectively and consistently due to the immaculate system set by Gasperini, and the likes of Ruslan Malinovskiy, Luis Muriel and Josip Ilicic will be the crucial players to watch out for.
The two group stage fixtures will be breath-taking, end-to-end, and thrilling spectacle, likely to produce an abundance of goals.
Predictions: Home: Man Utd 3 Atalanta 2. Away: Atalanta 2 Man Utd 2.

    Young Boys
United’s third and final opponent are BSC Young Boys, who will enter the group stages with zero expectations.
They’ll be looking to enjoy the moment of being in the competition, and make themselves proud through their hard work.
The Red Devils faced the Swiss side during the 2018/19 season, where they beat them 3-0 away from home and 1-0 at Old Trafford.
United could find themselves in trouble if they fail to take Young Boys seriously in their matches and end up dropping costly points.
Solskjaer’s team should have learnt their lesson from playing Istanbul Basaksehir and RB Leipzig last season, and will be looking to do everything to prevent that from happening again.
Predictions: Home: Man Utd 2 Young Boys 0. Away: Young Boys 1 Man Utd 3.
Young Boys will be hoping to spring a few shocks this seasonCredit: AP

    SUMMARY
Manchester United have found themselves in a straightforward group, where they have avoided the top-tier teams in the early stages.
This will allow them to focus on stamping their mark against sides who are not expected to reach the quarter-finals of the competition.
However, given the side’s history in the Champions League in recent years, underestimating any of their opponents will be at their own peril.

Man Utd hero Roy Keane reveals guilt over lying to Sir Alex Ferguson about how many drinks he would have at 5am sessions

ROY KEANE has revealed his guilt over lying to Sir Alex Ferguson about his 5am drinking sessions – and then using them as motivation. The duo spent 12 years together at Old Trafford and certainly endured a fractious relationship despite their on-field success.
Roy Keane frequently went out drinking during his professional playing career

But Keane, captain between 1997 and 2005, often went out boozing to switch off from the pressures of football – and would sometimes even go out the night before training.
Speaking to Gary Neville on Sky Bet’s The Overlap, the Irishman opened up about hiding his alcohol habits from his boss and how they spurred him to deliver on the pitch.
Keane, 46, said: “Alex Ferguson pulled me many times going, ‘You were out in Manchester and got a taxi at 2.30am.’
“I would go, ‘Yeah, I did but it’s not breaking the 48-hour rule in our contracts.’
“I’d use to argue with him and then he’d ask, ‘How many drinks did you have?’
“Then I’d lie to him. I would say to him, ‘Maybe ten or 11 bottles.’

“He’d reply, ‘Ten or 11 bottles?!’ If only I told him the truth as that was every hour!
“You told the odd white lie as you’re going along obviously, but you’re having a laugh and getting away with it. I wouldn’t change any of it.
“I’d always be in on a Thursday morning [the morning after a night out] because of the guilt for going out.
“So on a Saturday, I’d be thinking, ‘We’d better win because we’re out on Saturday and if the manager finds out we’re in trouble.’
“We had to win matches and trophies to justify the life we were living.
“But if I saw a player out now in Altrincham drinking at 1pm on a Tuesday or Wednesday I’ll be thinking, ‘That’s not good,’ but we were all doing it.”
Sky pundit pairing Neville and Keane were team-mates at Old Trafford, with the former right-back making his senior debut in September 1992 then becoming the first-choice option two years later.
The ex-Valencia manager said: “When I was coming into the first team, the players would go out on a Wednesday and Saturday every week.”
Keane continued: “Why wouldn’t you? When you’re 21-22 years of age and playing for Manchester United that was my way of relaxing.
“I fell out with the manager a few times over it. Some took up golf or snooker but mine was going out and enjoying myself.

“If someone said to me, ‘Do you want to go out after a game on a Wednesday,’ then we’d all go into Manchester, go into Chinatown and having a Chinese until about four or five in the morning.
“If someone said to me after a game, ‘Are you going go for a bite to eat to refuel for Saturday,’ I would say, ‘No I’m going into town.’ I’ll be thinking they’re the lunatics, not me!
“I thought I had to go out and drink as much alcohol as I possibly could, then Thursday morning I’d turn it around and think I best get ready for Saturday. And that was the life.”
