Man Utd verdict: West Ham’s Rice showed exactly why Red Devils MUST sign him as Solskjaer cannot trust Fred or McTominay

MANCHESTER UNITED got not only a first hand look at what Declan Rice would offer them, but also experienced why trying to sign him is so important.United have already earmarked the West Ham star as their priority target next summer as they look to build a team capable of dominating the Premier League again.

The midfielder was brilliant for the Hammers against the Red DevilsCredit: Rex
And not only did the England midfielder turn in a commanding display in the centre of the pitch, the game also showed why his capture could make such a difference.
For all the time they are without a player of his quality in the spine of their side, boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer knows he cannot trust Scott McTominay or Fred to play the role on their own.
It means United have to set up with two players in the base of their midfield, at the sacrifice of another who could play slightly more advanced.
And against teams as defensively sound as the Hammers, the absence of another more creative player is enough to make the difference when it comes to collecting wins in such tight games.
United had plenty of possession in good areas, but had they had that extra option available to them in an attacking sense they may well have found the way to unlock the West Ham defence.
But time and again they ran out of options at the vital moment, all the while McTominay and Fred remained in their central areas slightly deeper in play.

It is not to say either of them played particularly badly – they didn’t. But what they are is limited – and no more is that evident than when they are up against a midfielder of the highest quality.
Rice, at 22, is just that. He strolled around the pitch, orchestrating the Hammers in possession and also providing a complete shield in front of his defence.
He has the ability to read the game to such an extent he can be trusted to patrol his patch alone, allowing the Hammers that extra freedom to add an extra player to their offence.
Imagine this United side with Rice beating at the heart of it. Solskjaer to allow Pogba to play more advanced, and then still find the space to fit in another attacking threat such as Jadon Sancho or Jesse Lingard.
The whole balance of the team would be affected in a positive way, and see them become a far more threatening side to play against than they are now.
It won’t come cheap – something in the region of £100million is what West Ham would want. But can United really afford  not to?

Man Utd ratings at West Ham: David De Gea and Jesse Lingard heroes as Solskjaer’s Prem title charge continues

JESSE LINGARD returned to haunt West Ham as he came off the bench to fire Manchester United to victory in East London.Said Benrahma fired the Hammers into the lead but Cristiano Ronaldo got the Red Devils level before the break.

Cristiano Ronaldo got his fourth goal in eight days for Man Utd at West HamCredit: Reuters
The second half was a non-affair until a dramatic finish when the sub fired the visitors ahead against the side he reignited his career last season with a brilliant strike.
Mark Noble was the fall guy for the hosts when he came off the bench to take a penalty in dying seconds, but the beteran’s effort was stopped by David De Gea.
SunSport’s Gary Stonehouse runs the rule over how United’s stars performed at the London Stadium:
    DE GEA – 8
Did well in the first half to keep his team in it by denying Jarrod Bowen.
Little to do second period until the final seconds when he won his team the game by denying Mark Noble from the penalty spot.

BETTING SPECIAL – GET JOSHUA TO WIN IN ROUNDS 1-6 AT 60/1 OR ANYTIME AT 25/1
    WAN-BISSAKA – 7
Very proactive in the first half getting forward.
Kept that up in the second and showed no ill-effects from his midweek sending-off.
    VARANE – 7
Unlucky for West Ham’s goal in the opening period and was the better out of the centre-backs.
Invited the home side on late on with an overhit backpass that went out for a corner but his partner got him out of jail.
    MAGUIRE – 6
The skipper seemed to be differing in the first half and encouraging West Ham to attack.
As always, was a threat from corners but squandered his heading opportunities.
    SHAW – 7
A constant threat down the left as he continued his good form.
Was saved by his team-mate at the death after giving away a penalty for handball.
Scott McTominay did nothing of note to impress against the HammersCredit: AP
    MCTOMINAY – 5
Well off the pace in the first 45 as he struggled to make an impact and was struck right in the mush after the restart.
Did little to affect the game.
    FRED – 5
Just like his Scottish midfield partner, offered nothing in the opening period.
Failed to do much in the second.
    FERNANDES – 8
Grew into it in the first half after a quiet start as his influence began to grow.
Tried his best to create magic and was United’s star pick, but it just did not happen.
    GREENWOOD – 6
Always a threat with his pace but lacked a cutting edge.
REplaced by Lingard in the second and can have no complaints.
    POGBA – 6
After an early knock, he shrugged it off to use the ball well.
Failed to offer is usual threat going forward and was taken off with 18 minutes to go.
    RONALDO – 7
Never afraid to try his luck, he went in at half time with his fourth goal in eight days.
Furious he never got a penalty late on when he felt he had been fouled by Coufal.
Cristiano Ronaldo got another for Manchester UnitedCredit: Reuters
    SUBS
    LINGARD (ON 73 MINS) – 8
Will have been desperate to make an impact after his midweek mistake and he did just that.
Received a warm reception from the West Ham fans after his heroics last term on loan but he showed sheer quality with his only chance to influence the game.
The strike was worthy to win any game.
    SANCHO (ON 73 MINS) – 6
Did not have any opportunity to change the game.
    MATIC (ON 88 MINS) – N/A
Too late to make any impact.

Man Utd star Jesse Lingard never came close to sealing transfer return to West Ham, says David Moyes

DAVID MOYES insists West Ham never came close to re-signing Jesse Lingard from Manchester United. The England international attacker reignited his faltering career with a stunning loan spell at the Hammers from January.

DAvid Moyes admits there was never a chance of him signing the ace permanentlyCredit: Paul Marriott – The Sun
Lingard, 28, scored nine times in 16 matches leading to West Ham boss Moyes looking to turn his move into a permanent one during the summer window.
However, despite months of speculation, a transfer never materialised due to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s determination to keep the ace at Old Trafford.
Moyes, whose side welcome United to the London Stadium tomorrow, said: “Ole made it quite clear to me early in the transfer window that he wanted to keep him.
“So I knew pretty early that he would be staying at Manchester United.
“I was hearing all the stuff but I had a private conversation with Ole who made it clear he was staying.”
Solskjaer is now believed to be attempting to secure Lingard’s long-term future by offering him a new contract.

BETTING SPECIAL – GET RONALDO TO SCORE VS WEST HAM AT 30/1
And Moyes is refusing to be drawn on whether he will make any more attempts to intervene and bring the ace back to the capital.
He added: “I can’t talk about players at other clubs because that’s not the way we do it.
“But because Jesse was part of our club for a while, I think all I can say is that he made a massive contribution to the team, both on the pitch and off the pitch. We really enjoyed having him.
“I hope in many ways Jesse will look at that time and how well the players treated him and made him welcome, that Jesse will look at that as well. So it may change.
“He was great for us. But simply the manager told me he was keeping him and when that happens, I believe the manager – and that’s the way it went.”

Donny van de Beek ‘has absolutely NO CHANCE’ of staying at Man Utd after struggling since £40m transfer, says Paul Ince

DONNY VAN DE BEEK ‘has absolutely no chance’ of making it at Manchester United, says Paul Ince. The Dutch international midfielder, 24, arrived at Old Trafford in a £40m deal from Ajax, but he has barely featured for the Red Devils.

Van De Beek was handed a rare start at Young Boys on Tuesday but he was subbed off at half time of the Champions League defeat.
Boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer claimed the switch was tactical after United had gone down to ten men due to Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s red card.
But the club’s former ‘Guv’nor’ Ince is not convinced and says the ace will never make an impact at the Theatre of Dreams.
When asked by The United Stand if he will turn out to be a success, he said: “Absolutely no chance!.
“He’s tried to make the player happy [by playing him].
“It’s always tough when you don’t play to come and make an impression on your first start and to sub him off at half-time… what does it say to us, what does it say to the fans?

BETTING SPECIAL – GET RONALDO TO SCORE VS WEST HAM AT 30/1
“What does it say to Donny? If I can’t get a full game against Young Boys, ten men or no ten men, then it’s time for me to go.
“There’s nothing Ole could say that would persuade me that my future is at Manchester United.
“I wish it was because it’s the biggest club in the world but he needs to play football.”
Ince even went as far to name at least six players that are ahead of him in the pecking order as he tipped Van De Beek to leave before the end of the campaign.
He added: “[Scott] McTominay is back now, [Nemanja] Matic – who I love – is back, he’s got Fred.
“He’s never not going to play [Bruno] Fernandes or [Paul] Pogba, he’s got [Jesse] Lingard who can play in that role so the signs are there and I expect him to be gone in January.
“Whether it’s a loan… they won’t be getting the money back that they paid for him.
“You feel sorry for him because he looks like a nice lad, looks like he wants to do well, looks like the ultimate professional and he must know now that the writing is on the wall, unfortunately.”

Ex-Tottenham owner Alan Sugar told Teddy Sheringham to ‘f*** off’ before striker made amazing transfer to Man Utd

TEDDY SHERINGHAM has revealed how former Tottenham chairman Lord Alan Sugar told him to ‘f*** off’ before he joined Manchester United. The 55-year-old swapped White Hart Lane for Old Trafford in 1997 following five years spent in North London.

After 98 goals in 197 games, Spurs were keen to offer him a new deal, with the England international happy to remain at the club.
But the centre-forward and then-Tottenham chairman and owner Sugar disagreed about the contract length, which led the player to join United at the age of 31 to replace Eric Cantona.
Speaking in the latest episode of A League of Their Own, Sheringham was asked by host Romesh Ranganathan how did Sugar take his departure.
To which Sheringham said: “They [Tottenham] offered me a four-year contract when I was about 30.
“I said I wanted a five-year contract, we were humming and harring about that and it got a little bit heated.
“And then he changed his mind, he said, ‘In fact, no I don’t think you’re even going to play for another four years, so we’re going to offer you a three-year [deal].’

“And we just end up having a row and I said, ‘Well I want to go then’.
“And he went, ‘Go on then, f*** off,’ and I went ‘All right then I will’.
“[I] put in a transfer request and lucky for me Man Utd came calling and said, ‘Come and play for us’.”
In his first season at the Theatre of Dreams, Sheringham banged in 14 goals from 42 games, though Arsenal won the Premier League and FA Cup.
Sheringham however managed to win both trophies as well as the Champions League the following campaign.
He memorably equalised in the European Cup final against Bayern Munich, before Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scored the winner moments later.

The former Millwall star had come off the bench a week before the clash against the Bundesliga outfit to fire in United’s opening goal in their FA Cup final win over Newcastle.
After three Premier League titles in four years, Sheringham departed United in 2001, where he returned to Spurs.
He scored 22 goals in 70 top-flight appearances before he was released in 2003.

Man Utd legend Sir Alex Ferguson JUMPED over a desk to get at Roy Keane and had to be held back, reveals Wayne Rooney

WAYNE ROONEY has revealed how a furious Sir Alex Ferguson jumped over a desk to confront Roy Keane in a blazing row in front of the Manchester United squad.Irish midfield hardman Keane left the Red Devils in 2005 following an explosive fall-out with the legendary former boss.

The pair clashed following an interview the then-captain gave to MUTV slating his team-mates after a 4-1 defeat at Middlesbrough.
Keane was believed to have criticised Rio Ferdinand, Alan Smith, John O’Shea, Darren Fletcher and Kieran Richardson in the interview, which never aired.
Ferguson was furious and summoned Keane to a team meeting to play the interview in front of the squad.
United’s all-time top scorer Rooney was part of the United side then and he revealed to BBC Sounds’ ‘Tony Bellew Is Angry’ podcast how Fergie had to be restrained after leaping over his desk to get to Keane.
After being asked by the ex-boxer about the angriest he has ever seen a manager, Rooney said: “When Roy Keane left the club, it’s well-known there was a meeting… I can’t tell you the details of what happened in the meeting.
“Roy Keane has had a go at some of the players on the club’s TV channel and Fergie weren’t happy and called a meeting.

“So Roy Keane said ‘let’s all watch it together’ so we’ve all gone into Alex Ferguson’s office, the coaches, players and Sir Alex Ferguson.
“I’m only 18 or 19 at the time and Roy has asked if anyone has a problem and everyone said ‘No’. To be fair it wasn’t that bad.
“I think it was probably a hangover from something that had gone on between Roy and the manager in the past.
“Anyway, it had gotten into an argument between Roy and the manager and a few different things got said.
“I seen Alex Ferguson jump over his desk and I was thinking ‘Wow, this is crazy!’
“He jumped over the desk and was getting held back. It got calmed down but the next day Roy Keane has come into training and then about 30 minutes later we seen him driving off. That’s the last we seen of him.”
Rooney is now the manager of Championship side Derby County.
And the 35-year-old admitted how he had dished out the hairdryer treatment himself after a game at Wycombe last season.

Rooney said: “I had one last season when we played Wycombe away and we were horrendous, terrible.
“I was fuming because the performance didn’t represent me and what I wanted from the players.
“We were 1-1 in the last minute and we get a free-kick. I’m leaning against the dug-out and I already had it in my head what I was going to say to the players, I was going to erupt.
“We scored anyway and won the game 2-1. The final whistle has gone and I walk into the dressing-room and stood at the back, watching the players come in and they are high fiving each other and you can see they are buzzing with the result.
“Next thing a bit of music comes on and I’ve let it happen, so I say to turn the music off and I had ten minutes, at the top of my voice, just erupting.”
“I just went at them because I think you need to set standards. And even though we won the game, sometimes it’s the best time to have a go at players.
“That’s the big one I’ve had since I’ve gone into management.”

Ferdinand stunned by Rooney’s manager skills and says Man Utd legend as boss is ‘total opposite’ as he was as player

MANCHESTER UNITED legend Rio Ferdinand has waxed lyrical over Derby gaffer Wayne Rooney as he praised his managerial skills. The 42-year-old oversaw a Rams training session prior to the club’s 0-0 draw away at Championship table-toppers West Brom on Tuesday night.
Manchester United icon Wayne Rooney has been Derby’s manager since November 2020
Rooney’s former Red Devils team-mate Rio Ferdinand oversaw him during a Rams training session
And Ferdinand has been left impressed with his ex-Red Devils team-mate, who has been Derby’s boss since November 2020.
In his first season at Pride Park, Rooney guided the club to safety on the final day of the season following a 3-3 draw against Sheffield Wednesday.
He has also had to deal with Derby’s cash problems in the background this term, with the team facing a possible two-season transfer ban.
But Rooney has taken everything in his stride, with Ferdinand praising him for his ‘calm’ demeanour.
Speaking from Derby’s training ground in a video released on his FIVE YouTube channel, Ferdinand was asked what he thought Rooney would be like as a manager.
To which he said: “As a player, he was quiet sometimes, can be loud sometimes, can be brash, can be aggressive.

“He’s the total opposite. It’s mad, he’s the total opposite as a manager. There’s a respect level with the players, I think immediately you get that from these players as it’s Wayne Rooney.
“But then you’ve got to prove yourself, and I think every player I’ve spoken to here, whether that be Curtis Davies, Ravel [Morrison], etc, they’ve all said like ‘He’s good you know.’
“Because they didn’t know what to expect like anyone new through the door, but he’s brought them together, there’s definitely a more close-knit group now and they’re really young.
“And he’s been through some hardships already in his young, early start as a manager, but when I listen to him in the meeting, him and Liam Rosenior, his coach, they were positive, they were clear, their messages were really bang on point.
“We got a group that we chat into, a WhatsApp group with all the old Man Utd players. Listen, the first thing I’m going to be saying in there is ‘wow’.
“The thing that does come out of it is he absolutely loves it – tactically as well.”
Ferdinand also remarked: “I’m impressed by how he’s dealt with all of the things outside of the pitch.
“End of last season, they stay up with the last kick of the game, everyone thought they were down, his first job.

“He would have been well within his rights and people would have said ‘Do you know what? Well done to you,’ if he would have gone ‘Do you know what guys, thanks, but I’m going to leave now’.
“Probably the hardest job, one of the hardest jobs about at the moment, but he stayed on, and I said to him, ‘I probably would have walked,’ because his reputation would have been intact.
“Everyone would have still said, ‘Do you know what? I’ll give him a job. He kept them up last year,’ but he’s took it on again this year and he’s playing a risky game, but he’s passionate about it and he believes in himself.”
Derby currently sit 14th in the Championship table after seven games played, with the club winning just once so far.

Rio Ferdinand slams Man Utd loss at Young Boys and Jesse Lingard’s ‘big mistake’ as legend says ‘it’s Basaksehir again’

RIO FERDINAND has slammed former club Manchester United’s loss at Young Boys.Cristiano Ronaldo gave the Red Devils the lead after just 13 minutes in Switzerland on what looked set to be an easy opening night outing in the Champions League.

But United fell apart following Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s red card for an ankle-high first half challenge.
Young Boys levelled before sub Jesse Lingard’s nightmare backpass allowed the hosts to grab a 95th-minute winner.
Ronaldo, who was surprisingly subbed off along with Bruno Fernandes with 18 minutes remaining and the scores tied at 1-1, has since broken his silence following the loss and urged his teammates to ‘recover’ from the setback.
But Ferdinand, 42, went in two-footed as he assessed the game for BT Sport and compared it to last season’s embarrassing defeat in the same competition away to Basaksehir.
He said: “This is Basaksehir all over again. It’s a big mistake from Jesse.
“Wherever you go in Europe you’ve got to be on your game.

“It was a bad tackle from Wan-Bissaka and the game turned on its head totally.”
Meanwhile his fellow pundit and United legend Paul Scholes criticised boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for not making changes earlier.
He added: “It’s not a complete disaster. Jesse will be disappointed.
“It all stems from the sending off. United were quite comfortable up to that point.
“They really couldn’t get out of their half in the second half.
“I think they needed to bring a bit of pace on earlier, with Martial or Greenwood.”
