Manuel Lanzini gave the Hammers the lead inside the opening ten minutes and his side held firm to advance to the last-16.
After giving Cristiano Ronaldo a rest, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer did throw on his Portuguese compatriot Fernandes in order to try and grab a late equaliser to send the tie to penalties.
And he was prepared to try anything and everything to do just that – including a cheeky attempt to break the drop ball rule.
West Ham were given an uncontested drop ball in their own half as the clock ticked towards the 94th-minute.
But as the ref dropped the ball, Fernandes nipped in and began darting towards goal.
The 27-year-old came face-to-face with the goalkeeper, who stepped aside to let him pass the ball into the net.

Only the officials were having none of it as the aggrieved Fernandes retrieved the ball and jogged back to the spot for the drop ball to be retaken.
The final whistle soon followed, with the fans taking to Twitter to mock Fernandes.
One wrote: “Meet Bruno Fernandes, the most shameful player in the world.”
Another commented: “He still complained afterwards.”
A fellow viewer said: “Such a clown.”

She admitted she dreamed of seeing the Manchester United striker return to the club he began his iconic career at.
As well as discussing the life-threatening stroke she suffered last year, the star’s mother also appeared to rubbish reports she did not see eye-to-eye with his partner Georgina Rodriguez.
The footy-mad mum has also now declared that fans will get to see her 36-year-old superstar golden boy in action for another four years.
However, despite his memorable antics in the dug-out after coming off injured in the Euro 2016 final for Portugal, he appears to have no desire to step into management once he finally hangs up his boots.
Former Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood has stated he believes Ronaldo could replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as United boss within 18 MONTHS.
However, the Madeira-based mum-of-four told presenter and comedian Guilherme Geirinhas: “I’ve already asked him if he wants to be a coach when he stops playing.

“He told me he wants to enjoy life. He’ll play until he’s 40.”
Dolores also discussed his relationship with Buenos Aires-born Georgina, 27.
She worked as an au pair in the UK before meeting and falling in love with her father-of-four footballer boyfriend after getting a job at a Madrid clothes store.
Appearing to rubbish reports that she doesn’t always see eye-to-eye with the stunning brunette,  Dolores said: “Yes, yes, she’s a good girl. Cristiano is an exemplary father but he has people to help.
“The children have nannies and they have staff who do a lot of things. Four kids are a lot of work. Georgina is a great support to Cristiano, no doubt about it.”
She also admitted on Sporting Lisbon podcast ADN de Leao she had yet to make a full recovery from the stroke she suffered in March last year at her home in the Madeiran capital Funchal after a battle with breast cancer.

Dolores was rushed to hospital for a life-saving op following the stroke, with her son jetting to see her from his then-home in Italy when he learned the news.
Dolores, who lives at a seven-storey apartment block overlooking the Atlantic Ocean in Funchal which Cristiano purchased in 2019, revealed: “I don’t move my arm well, and as for speech, I stutter a lot. I notice my tongue sticking.
“I lost my sense of smell and taste. I can’t smell anything or taste it. Little by little I will recover, God willing.”
But in her bare-it-all interview she also insisted: “I adore football. If you invite me to dinner and there’s a match on, I won’t go to eat and and I’ll stay in and watch the game instead.
“Even if Ronaldo’s not playing, I’m always watching.”

CRISTIANO RONALDO clocked the highest speed of any player in Manchester United’s thrilling win at West Ham.The 36-year-old is showing no signs of slowing down despite his age.

And he racked up a staggering top speed of 20.2mph at the London Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Incredibly, that was the same pace he reached during his Old Trafford comeback against Newcastle the previous weekend.
And that ability to show a fresh pair of heels helps explain why FIFA 22 have given the five-time Ballon d’Or winner 85 acceleration and 88 sprint speed in the upcoming game.
Ronaldo’s effort against the Hammers – which equates to 32.5km/h – just beat team-mates Aaron Wan-Bissaka (20.1mph) and Luke Shaw (19.8mph), while Jarrod Bowen managed 10.4mph for the hosts.
Wan-Bissaka and Bowen had the most sprints for their sides with 16 and 21 respectively.
But it was Bruno Fernandes and Tomas Soucek who ran the furthest at 6.99 and 7.07 miles.

Ronaldo did 5.74 miles and 14 sprints – as well as crucially grabbing the equaliser in East London before Jesse Lingard’s dramatic winner.
His initial effort was parried by Lukasz Fabianski but he turned in the rebound for his fourth goal in three matches since returning to United.
That means he equalled the tallies of both Angel Di Maria and Alexis Sanchez who flopped in the No7 shirt at Old Trafford.
And in scoring at the London Stadium, Ronaldo surpassed Zlatan Ibrahimovic in another record with that his 66th ground he has found the net at since 2003-04.

Solskjaer was heavily criticised for hauling Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes off, with some supporters even suggesting he should be sacked following the loss.
The ex-Cardiff manager defended his decision to withdraw the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, and he stuck to his guns for the clash against West Ham, with supersub Lingard securing United’s fourth win from their five top-flight outings this term.

He is now in a critical but stable condition after being placed in an induced coma, with his parents flying out to Perth to be by his side.
But due to the strict hotel quarantine rules in Australia due to coronavirus, they are unable to visit him in hospital.
Hodgson’s story has sparked mass support from the football community in the United Kingdom and Australia, with Ronaldo inviting him to see a game at Old Trafford once he is better.
In a video sent to Hodgson, he said: “Hi Danny, I just hear about your history and I hope you get well soon.
“I invite you to come to one of [our] games in Manchester, so get well soon my friend. Take care.”

In a separate video, Henderson commented: “Danny, I just wish you all the best mate. Stay strong, stay in there. You’ll get through this, I promise.

“But we appreciate the Western Australia government allowing us to fly to Perth and respect their Covid-19 restriction.
“It means Danny is able to receive around the clock care from the wonderful Royal Perth Hospital ICU team, which may not be possible if the hospital system was overrun by critically ill Covid patients needing ventilation.”

MANCHESTER UNITED are reportedly in ‘direct contact’ with Jesse Lingard’s father over a new contract.The England international attacker reignited his faltering career with a stunning loan spell at West Ham last season.

Lingard, 28, scored nine in 16 matches leading to West Ham boss David Moyes attempting to turn his move into a permanent one during the summer window.
However, despite months of speculation, a transfer never materialised due to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s determination to keep the ace at Old Trafford.
Lingard returned to haunt his old club by coming off the bench yesterday to fire United to a 2-1 win.
Now United are believed to be doing everything to secure the future of the ace after he initially rejected their first extension proposal.
That is according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, who claims the club and Lingard’s father have been in ‘direct contact’ for ‘weeks’ already.
The Italian also claims that ‘Solskjaer is pushing directly with the player’ in order to get him to stay.

And Lingard is not the only one United want to pen a new deal with Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba and Luke Shaw all on the ‘contracts list’ drawn-up by the Red Devils to sort.

“I had a brilliant time here, but I had to do my bit today.
“West Ham are always hard to break down and when you find space like that in the box and get 1v1, you’ve got to try and make half a yard, and I like that finish into the far corner, so as soon as I got half a yard and the space opened up, I knew what I wanted to do.”
