Man Utd verdict: Immortal Cristiano Ronaldo was always going to produce on record breaking Champions League night

WE should have known he’d come up with something special to mark his place in the record books. When has Cristiano Ronaldo ever done anything on the same lines as other mere mortals?
Record-breaking Cristiano Ronaldo stole the show again after a quiet night against Villarreal in the Champions League
The night he edged clear of Real Madrid legend Iker Casillas on 178 Champions League appearances, more than anyone in this competition’s glorious history.
And the night he waited until deep into the final minute of stoppage time to turn an instantly forgettable evening into one those here at Old Trafford will always remember.
Okay, nothing like the prize on offer the last time he pulled on a red shirt in the Champions League at this ground, but boy, certainly as dramatic as most of the rest.
Seconds left, a game when his one sniff of a goal had been a way over the top header from barely six yards out and there it was, suddenly, staring him in the face.
A deep cross from Fred, a nod back from Ronaldo, a stretched boot by Jesse Lingard… and there he was, bang in front of keeper Geronimo Rulli and the goal gaping.
Yes, yes, yes, no prizes for guessing what came next. A drilled finish, the ball in the back of the net off Rulli’s hand, and Ronaldo racing to the touchline tearing his shirt off.

Booked, of course, but did he care? Did the vast majority of those inside this most famous of stadiums give a monkey’s? Did they hell.
Oh, and just for good measure it stretched his all-time Champions League goalscoring record to 136 as well.
All a million miles away, too, from all that had gone before.
For up to that point the only thing of note was a hugely comedic moment with fellow 36-year-old Raul Albiol.
The Villarreal veteran was booked for grabbing him round the waist to ensure he went no further as he raced away. Rather like two pensioners fighting for the last seat on the bus.
Talking of going no further, at that point, indeed for huge chunks of the game, you wouldn’t have stuck much on Ronaldo going much further than the group stages in this year’s comepetition either.
Everyone knew that flying start he made had to come to a halt at some stage. As he toiled against the Spaniards, though, it seemed to have come a little earlier than we all expected.

Especially on the back of a pretty toothless performance – although then again the whole United team was – against Aston Villa on Saturday.
You wouldn’t have stuck a brass farthing on what was to come. Another last gasp Champions League winner, another headline act from you know who.
And another night of United fans pouring out in delighted glee as their favourite chant of Viva Ronaldo echoed into the Manchester air.

How Man Utd could line-up next season with Erling Haaland partnering Cristiano Ronaldo and Declan Rice in midfield

MANCHESTER UNITED could be set to splash the cash again in 2022 as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to continue his rebuild. The Red Devils brought in Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane in the summer, and the club are likely to go big again next year.
This is how Manchester United could start in 2022 should they sign Erling Haaland and Declan Rice
Solskjaer is still eyeing up his first piece of silverware since taking charge in December 2018, while United haven’t won a trophy since the Europa League in 2017.
United failed to bring in a central midfielder in the recent transfer window, and that is believed to be a key priority for next season.
And despite bringing in Ronaldo, Solskjaer is understood to be keen to sign another centre-forward.
Edinson Cavani is in the last year of his contract at Old Trafford and is unlikely to be handed a new one-year deal.
Meanwhile Anthony Martial faces an uncertain future following his poor form this campaign.
And it has been claimed that United are eyeing up a double swoop to bring Borussia Dortmund ace Erling Haaland and West Ham star Declan Rice to the Theatre of Dreams.

Haaland is now available for £64million due to a clause in his contract, while Rice could set United back £100m.
Here SunSport takes a look at how United could line-up should they secure the duo’s services in a 4-1-2-1-2 formation.
David De Gea will likely retain his place between the sticks having started all six Premier League games this term.
And Solskjaer could name his preferred back four, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka deployed at right-back and Luke Shaw starting on the opposite side.
French World Cup winner Raphael Varane would then be partnered alongside skipper Harry Maguire in the heart of defence.

Starting in defensive midfield of a narrow diamond could be Scott McTominay who is no stranger to having played there under the Norwegian gaffer.
Rice could then feature with Paul Pogba in the middle of the pitch, with Bruno Fernandes deployed in the No10 role.
And Ronaldo could then lead the line with Haaland in what would be one of the deadliest attacks in the top-flight.

Football themed beer by Away Days features Man Utd legend Cantona’s Collar IPA, and has been enjoyed by Alan Shearer

IF you’re looking for a tipple while watching Match of the Day, you couldn’t go far wrong with these football themed beers.Launched by lifelong Ipswich Town fan Josh Bartlett, Away Days are an independent brewery that specialises in combining the beautiful game with brilliant lager.
Lifelong Ipswich Town fan Josh Bartlett has launched football themed beers with Away Days
Man Utd legend Eric Cantona has his own specially themed IPA
Each is named after legends of the game and capped off with bottle designs based around the iconic kits they wore.
From Cantona’s Collar, a strong 6.1 per cent IPA to the Scandinavian Pale Schmeichale, Manchester United legends are well represented.
While, England fans can toast record goalscorer Wayne Rooney with his very own pale ale, Wayne Brewney.
And if you are fond of a German beer, why not try the 4.6 per cent Bundeslager that’s adorned in their famous 1994 World Cup kit, and worn by former greats including Jurgen Klinsmann.
Away Days even caused a bit of controversy earlier this year when they launched a drink requested by Ipswich Town fans – a Lambert Out mid-table ale.
At the time, owner Bartlett said: “I’ve been careful – I’m a lifelong Ipswich fan and there’s a fine line here, it’s a tough job without a doubt.
“He’s under a lot of pressure even though we’ve all heard how he can handle the pressure, but it just got to a point.
“I asked other fans if they would be interested in me making a beer and the market was there. It’s a bit of fun, but it’s really a way for fans to express their frustrations on about how things are right now.
“It’s a light in a really dark tunnel for Ipswich Town fans.”
The beers have even managed to draw celebrity fans, with Alan Shearer toasting his own Ale’n Shearer and TV presenter Chris Kamara enjoying his Fighting Like Beervers drink.
If Scandinavian pale ale is your fancy, why not try the Schmeichale
Alan Shearer is a fan and poses with his very own Ale’n Shearer beer

Solskjaer is under pressure after United have tasted defeat in three of their last four games.
The Norwegian’s former team-mates Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes and Teddy Sheringham have all warned the ex-striker his team must improve otherwise he faces the sack.
But ahead of the clash tomorrow, Emery insists there is no reason for United to panic.
He said: “I’ve lived that when I was in Arsenal. Solskjaer is a former Manchester United player and a head coach who has a lot of support and respect.
“He was in the Champions League last year and reached the Europa League final.
“This year he has many challenges ahead and it is true that he has had some negative results, but it wouldn’t be wise for the club to change the vision they have for the head coach.”

Despite the LaLiga’s side shocking the odds in the Europa League final, Emery still insisted that the Premier League giants are the favourites for the Wednesday showdown.
He added: “If we see the squad one by one and take into account what Manchester United represents in history, they are the clear favourites.
“That team from the final also has Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo, so if they were very good then they have improved even more.
“I’m not afraid of Manchester United – we respect them and respect is important. If you lose respect the other team may take advantage of that.
“Individually have very good players – attackers like Edinson Cavani, Anthony Martial and Ronaldo. These are three attackers who could play in any team.
“They lost against Young Boys. It was the favourite versus the less favourite, but there was a surprise.
“Tomorrow’s Manchester United will be the best Manchester United, they have to prove their power.”

Ronaldo is looking to score in his fourth consecutive game for United following his return from Juventus last month.
After being rested for the Carabao Cup defeat against West Ham on Tuesday, the Portuguese star is expected to be named in the starting XI to face Villa on Saturday.
And Ronaldo has been tipped to take sensationally take charge of United within 18 months if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer doesn’t deliver silverware.
Former Tottenham gaffer Tim Sherwood has boldly predicted: “We’ve seen him do it on the international stage, most recently at the Euros, barking out orders.
“That boy will be a manager 100 per cent. I would have a bet on him being Manchester United manager in 18 months.
“Whenever Ronaldo finishes playing I think he will become a manager, it will be an automatic choice.
“If they win the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, any of those trophies, then Solskjaer keeps his job.
“But if they don’t win anything I think they’ve got a manager there in the making.

“He could bring an experienced coach in there with him – someone like Carlos Queiroz – as he’ll know plenty of them. And I can see him being a manager at Man United in the future.
“He’s almost coaching now; you saw it at the weekend during the warm-up whispering in [Raphael] Varane’s and [Harry] Maguire’s ears.
“But I don’t think it’s that he needs the captain’s armband to be a leader, he leads by example anyway.
“He did when he was at United the first time it’s just now he’s being more vocal with it.”
