Man Utd dealt another injury blow as Edinson Cavani reveals he is having recurring treatment for muscle problem

EDINSON CAVANI revealed he is receiving recurring treatment for a muscle problem in a fresh injury blow for Manchester United. The Uruguay striker missed the Red Devils’ 2-0 home loss to Manchester City on Saturday with the issue.

And he is expected to be sidelined for a while as he tries to recover.
Cavani, 34, suffered similar problems in his heel at the start of the campaign after getting injured in a pre-season friendly.
He has now sought help after aggravating the pain in United’s 3-0 win at Tottenham on October 30 – the game in which he grabbed his first goal of the season – but still came off the bench against Atalanta last week.
Cavani will miss Uruguay’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Argentina and Bolivia but flew home to support his wife Jocelyn at a book launch.
The striker told local media: “At a given moment when you see you are not making progress, you have to take a decision in order to get better.
“That is the situation I am in. Before the start of the season, I had pain in a posterior tendon, which kept me out for a couple of weeks.

“I got back into the United team bit by bit, and returned to the national side, but still always had a bit of pain.
“This is the sorts of thing you face as a professional footballer, but I hoped it would disappear.
“I was getting better, but after our game against Tottenham, the situation began to deteriorate.
“Muscular injuries are pretty difficult to deal with, and I decided to have some treatment done to solve the problem.
“All it was doing was harming my team – whether Manchester United or Uruguay.
“I want to recover as quickly as possible, so I can be fully fit and regain my place in the national side.
“The treatment requires me to rest for three or four days after the session.
“Then I can resume normal activities, and restart the treatment a few days later.”
    TRAFFORD TROUBLE
Cavani’s revelation is the latest setback for beleaguered United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who has come under renewed pressure following his side’s capitulation in the Manchester derby.
Raphael Varane is already out for a month with a pulled thigh.
Luke Shaw did not link up with England for the upcoming international after suffering a concussion during the Manchester derby.
And Solskjaer’s injuries mounted further when Paul Pogba limped out of France training on Monday clutching his thigh after taking a shot.
He has already been released from international duties to return to Carrington for further assessments.
RMC Sport report that he faces eight to ten weeks on the sidelines.

Cristiano Ronaldo the best I played with, says Ryan Giggs as he picks dream Man Utd side WITHOUT Beckham and Cantona

RYAN GIGGS has picked his ultimate Manchester United six-a-side team – with Cristiano Ronaldo dubbed the best player he ever shared a pitch with. The Welshman had a glittering playing career at Old Trafford, winning 13 Premier League titles and two Champions Leagues over a successful 24-year period.
No room for Giggs in his dream team.. or Beckham, Neville and Cantona
Despite that, there was no room for himself in his own team, with Class of 92 pals David Beckham and Gary Neville – as well as Eric Cantona – snubbed.
Giggs named Man Utd legends Peter Schmeichel, Jaap Stam, Roy Keane, Paul Scholes, Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney in his dream team.
The Welshman revealed in 2020: “Schmeichel would be the goalkeeper, Jaap would be the whole back four, Keaney, then the rest are going to be forward players. Scholesy, Ronaldo and Rooney.”
Despite being the club’s most decorated footballer, Giggs opted for Scholes and Ronaldo as his best-ever Old Trafford stars.
Giggs told an MUTV group chat: “The best player I played with is Cristiano Ronaldo.
“Obviously he was only there for a short space of time and he was brilliant for United and then went on to do even better elsewhere. Or not even better just as well as United.

“Scholesy is the best player I’ve played with at United, you’ve all seen it in training you couldn’t get near him.
“His brain was just quicker than everyone else, his range of passing, nasty.
“You think you’ve got him and he’ll just pop it off and give it the little feint. He was just brilliant in training.”
Giggs, 47, also revealed his toughest opponent – Inter Milan and Argentina full-back Javier Zanetti.
He added: “The hardest player I’ve played against was Zanetti for Inter Milan. He just ran all day. He used to play in midfield so he was comfortable on the ball.
“He could defend, he was tough, he actually broke my nose once. Zanetti had everything as a defender.”

Villa, who had aspirations of qualifying for Europe this season, sit 16th in the table after losing seven of their opening 11 games.
And Smith has acknowledged that the Villans have underachieved this campaign as he spoke of his honour at managing his boyhood side.
The statement, which was released on behalf of the League Managers Association, read: “I understand the football industry and of course, I respect the owners decision.
“But I felt that with important players soon returning to full fitness we would achieve a top half finish.”
Before adding: “I would like to express my gratitude to the owners, Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens, in giving me the opportunity to manage this special club.
“I would also like to thank the CEO, Christian Purslow, with whom I enjoyed an excellent working relationship as well as the two Sporting Directors I worked alongside, Johan Lange and Jesus Garcia Pitarch.

“To the coaches, staff and players, my sincere thanks to each and every one of them.
“Finally, to the Aston Villa fans who showed me nothing but love and support from my first day in the job to my last, a heartfelt thank you from my family and I.
“The Aston Villa board’s aims and ambitions are to take our club back into European football and I would love nothing more than seeing the club achieve that.
“I’ve always said that I was simply a custodian of this great football club, and my aim was to leave it in a better place than I found it. I believe that together we have achieved that.”
BBC reporter Simon Stone tweeted an excerpt from Smith’s statement, with many United fans replying to the post calling for Solskjaer to leave.
United dropped to sixth in the table following their defeat to rivals Manchester City on Saturday, with the club nine points off leaders Chelsea.
Speaking of the ex-Molde boss, one user messaged: “Take notes Ole, if you a love club you know what’s best for them even if it means you lose your job.”
Another remarked: “Ole should really take notes of that last bit.”

A third added: “Brilliant. Wish Ole does the same. But then again Villa’s owners actually care about the club and don’t think of it as a cash cow unlike Glazers.”
Meanwhile one said: “Ole won’t do this yet he believes he will turn the fortunes of this club.”
Another simply stated: “Ole has chance to do this now by stepping down but sadly he’s own selfishness will cause his good work to be unravelled.”

Former Arsenal striker Robin van Persie names the six best players he has played with, with four being Man Utd legends

ROBIN VAN PERSIE named the six best players he played with in his career – and four of them were Manchester United legends. The former Arsenal captain, who spent his last three seasons in England at Old Trafford, retired from football at the age of 35.

Van Persie, now 38, controversially moved to Manchester in 2012 having rejected a contract extension offer from Arsenal.
He then went on to win the Premier League title in his first season at Old Trafford.
And the Dutch hotshot seemingly has fond memories from his time in the red half of Manchester, naming four Red Devils stars among best players he shared the pitch with.
When asked to pick his most talented team-mate, he told BBC Sport: “So difficult to name one.
“I would go for Dennis Bergkamp, Thierry Henry, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Wayne Rooney and Ruud van Nistelrooy.”

Van Nisterlooy in fact left Old Trafford in 2006 – long before Van Persie joined United.
But the two strikers played together for Holland, earning 172 caps and bagging 85 goals between them.
The former Arsenal skipper also labelled former Red Devils duo Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand as the best two defenders he ever faced.
Following a three-year spell at Fenerbahce, Van Persie moved back to his homeland to end his career at boyhood club Feyenoord, where he is now coach under Dick Advocaat.
And he claims he could have stayed at Old Trafford for one more season back in 2015 as he still had one year left on his contract.
But the striker decided to ‘move on’ when then-United coach Louis van Gaal made it crystal clear he was not in his plans.

Van Persie said: “Because I had one more year on my deal, maybe I should have stayed.
“But then Van Gaal was the coach and he made it quite clear what his intentions were.
“Then you have to make a decision: Do you stay and fight for your place?
“Would it be an honest competition or not? Based on all that info, we decided to move on.
“But three years is not three days, it’s still a long period, it’s still a big part of my football career, and in total 11 years of football in England… as a kid I would never have dreamed of that.”

Man Utd legend Roy Keane admits he never warmed to team-mates Rooney and Ferdinand and had a bust-up over X Factor

ROY KEANE revealed he never warmed to Wayne Rooney in the Manchester United dressing room. The former Irish hardman said he did not get the England striker or team-mate Rio Ferdinand’s banter – and did not miss them after he left the Red Devils.
Manchester United legend Roy Keane claimed he never warmed to Wayne Rooney or Rio Ferdinand
Keane, 50, reckoned he was not on the same wavelength as Roo, who is 14 years his junior.
And that was highlighted during their playing days on a trip to Newcastle where the night before in the hotel Keane was watching rugby league on the TV before Rooney changed channel to watch the X Factor and hid the remote control.
Roo – who retired from playing to become permanent Derby manager – claimed later it led to an argument between the pair and Keane respected him for standing up to him.
But Keane, speaking on Sky Sports’ The Football Show said: “We certainly didn’t have an argument, let me tell you.
“I like my rugby league and yeah, someone did change the channel and I wasn’t happy.
“But we didn’t have an argument about it. I came down for breakfast the next day and Wayne said ‘Did you find the control?’
“So I told him where to go. If that’s an argument, god help us. I certainly didn’t respect Wayne because he stood up to me and wanted to watch the X Factor.
“I had a lot of respect for Wayne because I thought he was a brilliant player.

“I wouldn’t say I warmed to the guy, I certainly didn’t dislike him. But the lad’s on a different wavelength, different banter and if hiding the control was his type of banter then… not for me.”
Keane made 480 appearances for United in 12 years, but he said: “Near the end I remember thinking I don’t get some of the boys.
“I don’t get their banter or humour. I rarely had a conversation with anyone.
“When I left there were a lot of players I didn’t miss. The game was changing and maybe I was a bit grumpy, a bit old school.
“I didn’t get Wayne or Rio, I didn’t get their banter or what they stood for sometimes. It was probably a personal thing.
“The game was changing and I had changed with it but towards the end at United with the players coming through I didn’t always get them.
“Personality-wise they were not for me. Obviously they were very good players and I was delighted to play with them but in terms of banter or having a cup of coffee with them? No forget it.”

Dimitar Berbatov says another big defeat for Ole Gunnar Solskajer will be “too much” for Manchester United board

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER could be one embarrassing defeat away from losing his job.But Manchester United legend Dimitar Berbatov is hopeful tough lessons have been learned from the 5-0 defeat at home to Liverpool.

United remain in a fragile state heading into a crucial derby day clash with Manchester City at Old Trafford.
Ole may have bought himself time with a 3-0 win away to Tottenham – but cracks are still appearing having scraped a point away to Atalanta in the Champions League in mid-week.
Lose against Pep Guardiola’s City and United could be 11 points off the table-toppers Chelsea after 11 games.
For ex-Red Devil striker Berbatov, however, it is the manner of the performance and result which would push the United board to put Ole out of his misery.
Speaking to SunSport, Berbatov said: “If United approach this City game the same as the Liverpool game, then it will be the same result.
“And if it is the same result and performance, that’s going to be too much for everybody.

BETTING SPECIAL – GET MAN UTD TO BEAT MAN CITY AT 70/1
“I hope and I don’t think it will be like that – otherwise it will be a double embarrassment and it would show Ole didn’t learn anything from Liverpool which shouldn’t be the case.
“They need to learn from that defeat and do everything in their power to play in a way that can win.
“It is a very big game. They know each other very well so they must prepare and be tactically wiser. Let’s not forget Ole has a good recent record against City.
“I will be curious to see how they correct everything from Liverpool.”
He added: “Right now, United have a manager and the club and players believe in him.
“If you put in 100 per cent and lose, no one will blame you. When everybody puts in their best and the other team just outsmarts you, what can you say?”
Everyone needs to put effort in, not rely on your star playerDimitar BerbatovOn United Relying On Ronaldo
But Berbatov believes certain United players have not been giving 100 per cent this season – because they know Cristiano Ronaldo will save the day.
The Portuguese superstar scored twice against Atalanta – including a last-gasp equaliser – taking his total tally for the campaign to nine in 11 appearances in all competitions.
That’s more than Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood and Edinson Cavani combined.
Betfair Ambassador Berbatov said: “Ronaldo has been doing this throughout his career; covering his teammates from time to time when his team is not doing so well.
“But he cannot do this all the time. Sometimes other people need to pop up and say: ‘Take a rest – I will take it from here’.
“They are struggling to find the right attitude in games. Everyone needs to put effort in, not rely on your star player and say: ‘I will out in 60 per cent because I know Ronaldo is there.’
“You cannot always depend on him.”

Cristiano Ronaldo set to be snubbed for Man Utd coaching role now and in future despite ‘dream’ retirement plans

CRISTIANO RONALDO looks set to be snubbed for a ‘dream’ Manchester United coaching role – both now and in the future. As revealed by SunSport earlier this season, Ronaldo wants to end his playing career at Old Trafford and then step into a backroom staff role.

His son Cristiano Jr is on the United academy books so as a coach, he could watch over and influence his development.
But after signing the Portuguese superstar on a two-year contract this summer, the Daily Star state United have no plans to discuss a different role.
Instead, senior figures within the club insist he was brought back exclusively as a player – and recognise he could still have plenty more seasons in the tank which would see him play into his 40s.
Ronaldo has scored nine goals in 12 games since returning to England, including five in four in the Champions League.
United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – who is 20-1 to be replaced by his No7 in the dugout – said: “I wouldn’t be surprised if he still played when he was 40, not at all, because of the way he looks after himself.
“That’s the key to it – and of course some genes. There must be some genes as well, some DNA in there.

“His mentality is still absolutely spot-on and that’s a desire from inside that he’s going to keep going until his head says, ‘No, I’ve given everything now.’
“Hopefully it will last a few more years. Age is never a problem.”
Ronaldo showed his managerial instincts in the Euro 2016 final.
After limping off injured in tears, he was energetic and demanding on the sidelines as he barked out instructions to his Portugal team-mates.
And he proved his prowess as a gaffer by emulating his old boss Sir Alex Ferguson.
With United 2-0 down against Atalanta at half-time, Ronaldo burst into a furious hairdryer treatment to blast his team-mates and inspire them into a second-half comeback.
A source told SunSport: “Cristiano addressed the whole team and told them that the performance was unacceptable.
“He asked if they were not ashamed and said this was not how Manchester United perform in front of their own fans.
“He told them they needed to win the game and, if they didn’t, they might not qualify for the next stage of the Champions League.”

And five months on, the ex-Manchester United and City centre-forward has declared he is enjoying him break away from the beautiful game.
Tevez has declared that he is struggling to find the motivation to return to the pitch, though he has yet to announce his retirement from football.
Speaking to ESPN, the West Ham cult hero said: “I don’t feel the desire to be there when the ball is rolling.
“On Saturday I had a wedding while Boca were playing and inside I thought that, if I were playing, I’d be missing the wedding.
“If that result (a 1-0 defeat to Gimnasia) happened like that, I wouldn’t go because I’d be angry and I wouldn’t take any photos or have a drink; everyone would say Boca lost and Tevez was out partying. Football is like that.

Tevez, who banged in 94 goals in 279 games in all competitions for Boca, then stated that he wishes to recapture the fire to return to action.
But as of yet, he is not tempted to put his boots back on.
He added: “You start to wonder but in the meantime I am taking care of myself.
“I would like something to grab my interest and motivate me or which brings something out of me, but right now, every time I watch Juventus, Boca or a team I’ve played for.
“I look inside myself for that fire to motivate myself to play for six months or a year longer and I can’t find it.”
