Rangnick has Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot competing for the right-back slot with Kieran Trippier also linked to the club.
At the other end of the pitch, it is believed Rangnick will block Edinson Cavani leaving the club this month.
But Anthony Martial could have his wish to go granted with Barcelona reportedly offering United Ousmane Dembele in exchange for the Frenchman.
Dembele’s contract expires in the summer and he has already rejected a new offer from Barcelona.

PDC Darts Final forces Cristiano Ronaldo’s Man Utd vs Wolves OUT of prime time TV slot

Michael Smith faces Peter Wright in the Ally Pally showcase later on.
Bully Boy Smith reached his second world darts final after a 6-3 win over James Wade.
Meanwhile, Snakebite Wright topped Gary Anderson 6-4 to keep up his aim of becoming a two-time champ.
Smith reached the final in 2019, but came up short against Michael van Gerwen.
But Wright did go on to win the big one a year later in 2020.
The climax to the darts will be broadcast live on Sky Sports – which forced them into a change for the footy.

United welcome Wolves to Old Trafford after the Premier League fixture was selected by them.
However, instead of the clash going head-to-head with the darts on the other channel, the match was changed to a 5.30pm kick-off instead.
United are looking for back-to-back Prem wins.
It is the first game of 2022 for both sides as Ralf Rangnick’s men look to build on the comfortable 3-1 win over Burnley last time out.
Wolves meanwhile return from a Covid affected absence, with this their first game since a 0-0 draw with Chelsea on December 19.

Ralf Rangnick says he will BLOCK Edinson Cavani transfer exit after begging Man Utd striker to stay

RALF RANGNICK insists veteran striker Edinson Cavani is going nowhere in the New Year transfer window.Cavani had grown frustrated at a lack of game time but came on for his first action since November 2, scoring in the 1-1 draw at Newcastle.

Then the 34-year-old made only his third league start of the season, up front in the 3-1 win over Burnley on Thursday.
And Rangnick said: “We’ve had quite a few conversations in the last couple of weeks, he is probably the player with whom I have spoken most.
“I told him from the very first day that, for me, he is a highly important player.
“He is probably the only one who can play as a striker back to goal and face to goal.
“His professionalism, his work ethic is just amazing and I told him that I desperately want him to stay until the end of the season.
“He knows that. He also knows how highly I rate him and how highly I respect him, and that was also the reason why I played him against Burnley from the beginning together with Cristiano.

“I will definitely not let him go.
“For me, he is a highly important player for the rest of the season, still playing in three competitions, so we will definitely need Edi.
“I would rather have another Edi on top of that but for me it’s clear that Edi has to stay.
“With regard to the other players, yes, our squad is maybe a little bit too big with regards to numbers but we still have Covid, we have three competitions, as I said, and I think we could do with a bigger squad maybe in times without Covid.”
Another player frustrated at his lack of action is Donny van de Beek who started just two Premier League games in the whole of 2021.

The 24-year-old former Ajax star is now in danger of missing out on Holland’s World Cup squad if he cannot either force his way into the United team or get a move elsewhere.
Rangnick, however, is giving the midfielder no guarantess.
He said: “So far as I have got to know him he’s got a top mentality, he works hard in every training session.
“He’s a team player through and through and there will be games where he will get his chance to play I’m sure.
“I also had a longer conversation with him last week about that and, again, of course it’s difficult for him right now because he also wants to play for the Dutch national team.
“He wants to qualify for himself and play in the World Cup in Qatar and in order to do that he needs to get game-time here.
“But I still believe that we should keep him, that he should stay here, definitely until the end of this season and try to get as much game-time as he possibly can.”
One player who may have played his last for United is Anthony Martial, however, after his agent made it clear that he wants to leave United.
The French forward has been left out the last two squads despite having recovered from a knee injury.

And Rangnick said: “He made it very clear that he wants to leave and, in a way, I can understand his wish to leave and to try to play more regularly somewhere else.
“But, again, it’s a question not only of what he wants to do but it’s also a question of which kind of clubs are interested in him and do they meet the demands of the club, so we have to wait and see.
“He is not injured currently, I decided to go for the group of players that were in the squad against Burnley, so it had nothing to do with injuries.”
One striker who will definitely be part of the action against Wolves at Old Trafford tomorrow is Cristiano Ronaldo despite it being the 36-year-old’s third game in eight days.
Rangnick said: “Physically he seems to be fit. He’s doing everything, he’s a top professional, he looks after himself and after his body, he eats the right things.
“At the age of 36 right now, I’ve never seen a player at this age like this, maybe Ibrahimovic who is even a little bit older but he’s a different kind of player.
“But I don’t see why he shouldn’t be able to play three games within eight days.
“But if at one stage we need to rest him it’s no problem but then it’s even more important to have Edinson in the squad.” More

Ferdinand says Man Utd were wrong to make Harry Maguire captain amid ‘leadership struggle with Cristiano Ronaldo’

RIO FERDINAND believes it was a mistake for Harry Maguire to be handed the captain’s armband so soon – amid claims he is involved in a leadership struggle with Cristiano Ronaldo.Maguire, 28, was named skipper in January 2020 less than six months after his £85million transfer from Leicester following Ashley Young’s exit.

United legend Ferdinand reckons the armband is saving him from being benched after a number of fans have called for him to be dropped following a dip in form.
Ferdinand, 43, told Vibe with Five: “The fact that he has had the armband has given him that grace. Which it would do. I think he was given it too early.
“It’s a hard enough job coming into Manchester United, getting your feet under the table and starting to feel comfortable as it as without the added pressure of being captain.
“Being captain is a massive responsibility, there is history that goes with it, a big weight on your shoulders.
“You need to experience being there for a period of time to carry that weight.
“It was more important for Maguire to come in and concentrate on becoming a Manchester United mainstay than being captain.”

Ferdinand’s words come after claims Maguire is locked in a power struggle with Ronaldo.
Gary Neville recently hinted at a tussle between the pair and Maguire has reportedly become more subdued since the Portugal legend’s summer return to Old Trafford.
Ferdinand reckons United should have instead made David de Gea captain – one of just two players alongside Phil Jones who played in the 2012-13 Premier League winning season.

He said: “The thing you can counter that with, is that there weren’t many captains at the club, who else are they going to pick?
“David de Gea would have been my choice because of the time he’s been there and he knows what it takes to win.
“This is all with hindsight but you have to got to think about these times that might come with someone like Harry Maguire, new at the club in that sense.
“And that added pressure is weighing on him heavily at the moment.” More

There had been murmurings of discontent surrounding Ronaldo and suggestions he may leave the club, just months after his stunning return in the summer.
One Spanish newspaper joked the five-time Ballon d’Or winner was even open to joining Real Madrid’s arch-rivals Barcelona in an April Fool’s Day-style report while a return to the Bernabeu has also been mooted.
But on the day Ronaldo inspired Ralf Rangnick’s side to a 3-1 win over Burnley, Mendes reiterated his client’s commitment at Old Trafford.
The agent told Sky Sports in Italy: “Cristiano Ronaldo is very happy at Manchester United.
“He’s going to continue with his solid, great performances as always in his career.
“It’s going be a great season for him, I’m sure.”

Ronaldo should have fired United into an early lead against Burnley but he blazed over when through on goal.
But after Scott McTominay’s finish and Ben Mee’s own goal, Ronaldo tapped in a rebound to wrap up the win.
Ronaldo has now scored 14 goals in 21 appearances for the Red Devils this season.
That includes four in his five Premier League games in December as United continue to challenge for a top-four finish.
But there is still many who believe the match is not good news for the club.
His body language during Monday’s 1-1 draw at Newcastle – moaning and berating team-mates then sulking down the tunnel – left Gabby Agbonlahor fuming at the forward’s treatment of younger players.
The ex-Villa striker said: “That performance from Ronaldo was somebody sulking all game. His attitude was off.
“The harmony is not right in that changing room. The form of Rashford and Greenwood has dropped since Ronaldo has been there.

“If I’m Rashford, Greenwood and Sancho I’m scared to have a shot. Every time they have a shot he’s got his arms up to say, ‘Why haven’t you passed to me?’
“I’d be saying to myself, ‘Oh, why did we have to bring him here?'”
And there has also been rumours of a power struggle between captain Harry Maguire and Ronaldo, who skippers Portugal and is one of the greatest players of all time. More

But the legendary former Manchester United manager’s 49 trophies is still the biggest haul of any top-flight boss.
His 13 Prem titles put him clear of Arsene Wenger, Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola all put together!
And no one has managed to emulate his 1999 Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup treble.
Even United have still not recovered ever since his departure.
Despite the efforts of David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the club have yet to lift the title again since Ferguson’s retirement.
The Scot enjoyed a landmark career with a host of memorable moments.

Man Utd have nobody to ‘put certain players in their place’, says De Jong after Neville tears into Cristiano Ronaldo

After several postponements due to Covid, United returned to action with a disappointing 1-1 draw at Newcastle on Monday.
That came after they narrowly beat the Premier League’s bottom side Norwich in their previous match earlier this month.
Now ex-Man City title winner De Jong has claimed somebody needs to clamp down on some of United’s players inside the dressing-room following their disappointing performances.
He is adamant that the squad has nobody ‘to put certain players in their place’ as he pointed to Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta stripping Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of the captaincy.
Dutchman De Jong told Ladbrokes: “Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is their club captain and he experienced it first-hand; even though he was the captain, he breached protocol, and it means he’s out of the door.
“That’s something you just don’t see at Manchester United.

“Pep Guardiola recently did it too with Jack Grealish and Phil Foden; it’s a statement.
“It’s about getting everyone at the club on the same page, trying to achieve something as a team.
“That’s something I’m just not getting from United at this moment in time; it doesn’t look like anyone is there to put certain players in their place.”
De Jong added: “Someone needs to step in who isn’t afraid of saying ‘you, I don’t want to see you for the next two weeks. Go away and think about things. Whenever you think you’re ready to come back, come back, but for now, I’m taking a young kid from the under-23s who is eager and hungry, and I’m giving him a chance.’”
Ex-United defender Gary Neville slammed United’s stars as a ‘bunch of whingebags’ while tearing into them following a shocking first half at Newcastle.
And he also blasted Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes for running straight down the tunnel and failing to thank the travelling United fans, who faced a 150-mile trip home.
    ‘WHINGING ALL THE TIME’
Neville blasted: “It’s annoyed me for about two months.
“The best players in your team, it’s devastating when they’re showing that look and body language to the younger ones. They have to help them.
“They have to be the father, the grandparent in the team.”
He added: “I made massive mistakes at Man Utd but I had great senior players who would have a go at me but also put their arm around me – I think there’s something wrong.
“You can’t run off at the end of a game. Bruno is whinging all the time; he’s been sensational for Man Utd.
“The two centre-backs were poor at the back, Maguire is having a nightmare season.
“You’ve got to be there when your team-mates need you in those moments.
“At the end of the day, I love that lad [Ronaldo], he’s the best I’ve ever seen in my life at times, but don’t run off like that. I’m not having that.”

But his agent and friend Jorge Mendes collected it on his behalf.
The 36-year-old has now scored more than 800 career goals, well ahead of his great rivals Lionel Messi.
It sees him overtake Brazil legend Pele aswell on official records – though his old club Santos dispute this.
Mendes paid tribute to CR7 on stage at the Armani Hotel in the UAE.
The 55-year-old said: “I think it’s the biggest achievement ever in football.
“It’s amazing. Very difficult to score 800 goals, just CR. I think he’s the only one who could do it. The best player in the world, the best ever.

“Congratulations Cristiano and happy new year for all of you.”
The player himself appeared on a screen in Dubai, as he was busy preparing to play for Manchester United against Newcastle.
But after a laboured performance in a 1-1 draw against the Magpies, he might well wish he was out in the affluent city.
He shared his delight at winning prise on Instagram, writing: “Always beautiful and wonderful Dubai, with it’s amazing architecture and kind people.
“I’m proud to be recognized, year after year, in such an elegant and prestigious event with such a worldwide impact.
“The Dubai Globe Soccer Gala is already one of the most important sports events in the world, and to receive such a meaningful award, for Best Goal Scorer in Football History, is truly one more dream come true.
“Thank you Dubai! I hope to see you soon!”
Ronaldo usually wins an award or two at the yearly event.
Last year he was named Player of the Century, attending with his stunning partner Georgina Rodriguez.
In 2019 he was named Best Player, while in 2018 he secured two prizes for Best Player again, as well as Goal of the Year.
