Gary Neville and Co made Ed Woodward an easy scapegoat for Man Utd decline… but shambles is far from all his fault

THE easiest thing to do in assessing Ed Woodward’s time in charge of Manchester United is to blame him for everything. After all, that is what Gary Neville does every time he picks up a microphone.

Neville never suggests how he would have done it differently however, he is just happy to lead everyone in hammering the easiest scapegoat at Old Trafford.
Of course Woodward will forever be linked with helping the Glazer takeover go through in 2005.
Let us not forget, however, David Gill who had contested it, continued to work on under them until Woodward finally took his role in 2013.
His exit and Woodward’s promotion was never the problem, it was Sir Alex Ferguson resigning which left the new boardroom incumbent with having to steer United through the most difficult period in quarter of a century.
    He accepts mistakes were made.
That the right structure was not in place for David Moyes to take over.

The problem was that structure was Sir Alex, there was no database to tap into for the new boss.
Woodward, 50, believes he afforded Louis van Gaal too much power which lead to scatter-gun recruitment.
He does not regret appointing Jose Mourinho and two trophies and a second place finish are testament to that.
But, as many a football chief will tell you, the Special One is not an easy customer to deal with long term.

As for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the long-term plan, it was going in the right direction.
A second-place finish, five semi-finals and one major final.
This time last year they were joint-top of the league and earlier this season it was looking very good.
But when things start to unravel at United they happen very quickly and a frustrated fan base, brought up on the glory years, want someone to blame.

Three trophies, two more major finals, and two second-placed finishes in the last five years would be seen as the glory years at somewhere like Tottenham.
Without the league, however, Woodward himself will accept his term has not been a success.
As of today they are in the same position as at the end of his first season in 2013-14 — seventh and 22 points off top.
He looks at sliding doors moments when a different managerial appointment could have taken the Red Devils on a different path.
But was Pep Guardiola not always bound for Manchester City and Jurgen Klopp for Liverpool.
And would Carlo Ancelotti or Antonio Conte provided anything different in what probably would have been the short-term than Mourinho did.
He may wonder, however, if Mauricio Pochettino was one that got away.
The Argentine sat waiting for a club between November 2019 and January 2021 and could yet end up at Old Trafford this summer.
Performances on the pitch have been disjointed, with a lack of harmony off it, even after Solskjaer’s sackingCredit: EPA
Indeed the biggest piece of advice Woodward will give to his successor is to make sure they get that appointment right and have someone for the next five or six years.
The good Woodward has done behind the scenes is ignored like how he reversed the lack of investment in the squad that Gill had overseen in Sir Alex’s final years.
His commercial and business acumen, alongside that of Richard Arnold, enabled the funds to be made available.
Proof that business and football in the modern day simply have to go hand-in-hand.
The debt from the Glazer takeover had to be serviced and there was no rich oligarch funding it all.
So Woodward had to go out and get the money to ensure successive managers could enact their own plans.
He did it very well but too often he allowed himself to take all the stick when he had, in fact, designated power into a footballing structure trusted to recruit and implement.
Arnold (L) will takeover as CEO when Woodward steps downCredit: PA
He was always fighting and trying but at times must have felt he was walking on sand as City, Liverpool and Chelsea picked up titles.
In the end the European Super League, with its elitist tone and no relegation or promotion, sat so badly with him that he could not back his bosses the Glazers in trying to see it through — so he quit.
The threats he received during his tenure, which resulted in his wife stopping going to games, and the protest outside his Cheshire home could not fail to have taken its toll on a father with young twins.
He made mistakes but which football chief exec has not and he didn’t deserve all this.
To meet him is to find a funny, engaging man, who loved talking about the game and wanted the best for United, yes, on the pitch.
His biggest regret was the statement he made to an investor on a Zoom call in which he said United’s finishing position in the league would not affect them financially.
He shakes his head at that now. It sounded like he didn’t care about what happened on the pitch, and he did very deeply.
Now it is Arnold’s time to pick up that heavy baton of history and expectation — good luck.

He has completed a medical and Napoli hope to register him as a player by Saturday so that he can play against Sampdoria next Wednesday.
Tuanzebe is currently in Italy and is awaiting a visa, which Napoli are confident he will get in time according to the Manchester Evening News.
Napoli will pay United a £500,000 loan fee with an extra £500k potentially to be paid for bonuses, reports transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.
The switch to Napoli means Tuanzebe’s season-long loan deal at Aston Villa will come to an end – despite previously wanting to make his stay permanent at Villa Park.
But Tuanzebe has played just eight minutes of football for Villa since Steven Gerrard arrived at the club.
And he will now move in search of more game time.

Meanwhile, there have been other exits from Old Trafford with Teden Mengi joining Birmingham on loan.

Man Utd ‘make midfielder No1 transfer target in summer’ with Declan Rice wanted in £100m deal from West Ham

MANCHESTER UNITED have made signing a midfielder their No.1 priority this summer – with Declan Rice reportedly top of their wishlist. The Red Devils are one of the West Ham ace’s long-term admirers and have contemplated signing him on numerous occasions over the last two years.
Manchester United are long-term admirers of Declan RiceCredit: Rex
But according to reports, the Old Trafford board will sanction a move for the England international in the summer transfer window.
talkSPORT claim United will table an offer for the defensive midfielder once they’ve installed a new permanent manager.
The Red Devils would have to shatter their club-record transfer fee to acquire Rice’s services as West Ham value him at £100million.
But they’ll likely table a lower offer before meeting the Hammers’ valuation of the 22-year-old.
The Premier League big boys could, however, face an uphill task if Rice and his West Ham team-mates secure Champions League football this season.
Rice seemingly pledged his future to David Moyes’ side last September, saying: “Everyone knows how I feel about West Ham and I feel about playing under the manager and what it’s like playing with the group of players I’m playing with.

“I feel you can see in my performances nothing’s up, nothing’s concerning me. I’m playing with a smile on my face, I’m going out there, I’m leading the team.
“I think you could see a difference if I wasn’t giving 100 per cent but every time I’m putting on the shirt my only objective is to give everything for the club.”
And just this week, the midfielder gave another hint that he could stay at the London Stadium.
He told West Ham’s official website: “I feel like we can achieve good things.
“We want the Champions League, that’s what everybody wants. I feel like top six is more of a bigger aim for us.
“We’ve gone for everything. We’ve rotated the squad as much as we can.
“There are so many positives to take and if we really look towards the European games coming up, when we’ll probably play a big side, I feel like we can really go far.
“We’re fifth in the league at the moment, we’re flying, and we’re into the knock-out rounds of the Europa League.
“There are lots of positives and every time we play at home, we can feel that presence from the fans. We love playing in front of them.
“There’s no limits to what we can do. We just need to stick together, keep doing what we do best and see where the season takes us.”

Meet new Man Utd CEO Richard Arnold, who was university pals with Ed Woodward and once called squad ’25 George Clooneys’

MANCHESTER UNITED have confirmed the departure of executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.Woodward will leave the hot seat on February 1 after 16 years at the club and is set to be replaced by Richard Arnold, who will take on the role of chief executive officer.

The accountant, 50, will be the first CEO since David Gill stepped down from the role in 2013.
Arnold told United’s website: “I am honoured to have the chance to serve this great club and its fans. I am determined to return that honour in any way I can.”
Arnold will move from his role as managing director to a more senior position, but who is he?
    University pals
Bizarrely, before they both worked for the Red Devils, Arnold and Woodward met at Bristol University.
Arnold graduated with a degree in biology in 1993. Then, in 1996 he got a qualification in Chartered Accountancy, which later helped him score his first job at United.
Prior to his arrival at Old Trafford, Arnold worked for technology company Global Crossing Europe Ltd and international sales company InterVoice, where he worked as deputy managing editor.

Ahead of the 2007-08 season, Richard was appointed as the club’s commercial director.
It was dream job and one that he rose to the challenge of – taking on the responsibility for the management and growth of the club’s sponsorship business, retail, merchandising, apparel and product licensing business, and digital media business
Arnold was instrumental in the signing of a number of lucrative sponsorship contracts, including a world record seven year £450million kit sponsor deal with Chevrolet in 2014, and a £750million sports equipment deal with Adidas over 10 years in 2015, the most valuable in sporting history at the time.
That prompted the-then commercial director to say Manchester United boasted “25 George Clooneys” in their squad, because of their marketing appeal.
    He backed Solskjaer
Like Woodward was, Arnold was always a firm believer in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reign.
In March last year, despite not winning any trophies for the club, he claimed the now ousted Norwegian had brought “phenomenal success” to the Premier League giants.
“Ole is the ultimate exemplar of someone in United who has tremendous character, incredibly well connected with the culture & history of the club,” Arnold said.
“No one in the world is happier than me with the phenomenal success he’s bringing.”
But when Solskjaer was sacked, he opened up about his final days at the club.
“Out of respect for Ole, we did not approach other managers before he left,” he said.

The club then bided their time before appointing German tactician Ralf Rangnick as temporary boss.
He added: “Our plan then was to appoint an experienced interim manager and Ralf was our clear first choice.”
Arnold will now be tasked with backing Rangnick with star signings.
United fans will hope he is as successful in the transfer market as he was in marketing the club to investors. More

Eight things wrong at Man Utd revealed starting with owners and management down to poor transfer recruitment

ALMOST a decade after Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, Manchester United are looking at yet another ‘rebuild’.Sadly, it’s a word that supporters have grown all-too-familiar with since the legendary Scottish manager’s departure.
Recently appointed Man Utd boss Ralf Rangnick has a huge task on his hands at Old TraffordCredit: Reuters
Cristiano Ronaldo and the Red Devils have endured a difficult festive periodCredit: AFP
There’s actually so much wrong with United that it’s difficult to know where to start.
The squad and the club as a whole needs a complete reset from top to bottom, with Manchester United fan Tom McDermott highlighting several issues that need immediate attention…
    OWNERS
Ultimately, it starts and ends with them.
Ferguson and former chief executive David Gill hid so many problems with their success, but the moment they left in 2013, the walls started to cave in.
Will the current owners get it right and deliver a league title again? I have serious doubts.

    OLD TRAFFORD
The Theatre of Dreams requires surgery, as does the Carrington training ground.
Many new players arrive at lesser facilities than the clubs they’ve moved on from.
How can United claim to be the biggest club in the world when they don’t have the best facilities in the Premier League?
    RECRUITMENT
From Angel Di Maria to Alexis Sanchez, Paul Pogba to Donny van de Beek, how many post Ferguson signings have been a success?
    It’s been a disaster.
    THE UNITED WAY
What is it? We were told to ‘trust the process’ under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but what now?
Continue to believe in a man (no disrespect) who is an expert at building smaller clubs? The pressure at United is a different level.
Ralf Rangnick is very good, but he’s very good upstairs.
    CULTURE
‘Best in class’ and the famous United work ethic has long gone.
We used to laugh at teams across Europe, and even Chelsea, at the way they’d churn out managers. We’re there now.
United feels like Liverpool before Jurgen Klopp’s arrival – clinging to the old boot room but not knowing which direction to point towards. The club looks and is acting confused.
    NO FOOTBALL PEOPLE
It’s getting better with Darren Fletcher’s introduction but this is his first go in such a position.
Would it really matter anyway if, say, someone like Edwin van der Sar came in? He would have the same issues as any other Glazer employee.

    ACADEMY
Players are being produced but they’re below the level that we’re seeing at City.
The lowering of standards has filtered through to the once great academy, and we’re now seeing the very best youngsters choose the blue half of Manchester over red.
    SOLUTION?
What’s United’s realistic aim? Top four consistently is the owners’ target, but for fans it’s Premier League titles (to start).
Several of the squad will move on in the summer and the squad will need further surgery.
Instead of reactionary purchases such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Van de Beek (because he was cheaper than Jack Grealish), United must go back to basics.
First improve the academy and win the local battle with City. Spend money on the facilities and make Carrington the best training base in Europe.
Then there’s Old Trafford. Give it the lick of paint it’s been so desperate for.
Place football people alongside the ‘money men’ in more prominent positions and revise how contracts are issued, and the faulty recruitment process is conducted.
This all requires money and time and is just the tip of the iceberg.
Unfortunately, until these wheels are in motion, United will always play second fiddle and be left to reflect on ‘history’, while the best teams in Europe disappear further into the distance. More

Harry Maguire buys £4m ‘dream home’ with wife-to-be, as Man Utd skipper struggles to sell old pad after slashing price

HARRY MAGUIRE is selling his Cheshire home for £1.82million, but is struggling to find a buyer. The four bedroom, two bathroom mansion was the Man Utd captain’s first pad bought after he signed for the Red Devils in 2019 for £80million.

But the England centre back, 28, has been forced to slash the price of the property because he couldn’t find any takers.
That comes as Maguire and his wife-to-be Fern Hawkins have been moved into another Cheshire house nearby worth £4million.
According to the Mirror, the loved-up pair moved into their new abode before Christmas.
However, despite settling in to their dream home, the old one is still on the market.
Maguire had been reluctant to reduce the price despite being on since March and buyers unaware who owns the luxury house.
It’s found in an affluent part of Greater Manchester, near where team mates Jesse Lingard and David De Gea also reside.

Harry Maguire buys £4m ‘dream home’ with wife-to-be, as Man Utd captain struggles to sell old pad after slashing price

‘Soft’ Man Utd haven’t made ANY progress under Ralf Rangnick as Paul Ince slams Jadon Sancho and flops after Wolves loss

‘BANG average’ Manchester United have made NO progress under Ralf Rangnick, according to Paul Ince. The former Red Devils midfielder also slammed the players as ‘soft’ with just one ‘great’ player in the squad.
Ralf Rangnick has not improved Manchester United in any way, according to Paul InceCredit: Rex
Ince appeared as a pundit covering the game between two of his former sidesCredit: PA:Press Association
Ince was a Sky Sports pundit for Monday’s dreadful performance at home to Wolves as Rangnick suffered his first defeat since taking over as interim boss.
And when asked if United have improved since the German came in, Ince fumed: “If I’m being totally honest, then no.
“It reminds me of when Ole first took over at Manchester United and he had an easy fixture list – Cardiff, teams like that – and it came off the back of a Jose Mourinho team where the players didn’t really like Mourinho and the atmosphere was hostile.
“Ole came in, had a great fixture list to go into, changed the system, changed certain things, made it a happy camp and they started winning games.
“I think we all got hoodwinked into the fact that this was the way forward and we were making progress. I get that same feeling now.
“The fixture list that Ralf has come into is the perfect fixture list for any manager managing a big club like Manchester United.

“Apart from Palace at home, the performances have been absolutely bang average, they really, really have.
“If you could ask any Manchester United fan sitting there now who knows about football, do you see a progression in the development of what we have seen over the last five games? You actually have to say no.”
United mustered just two shots on target in the whole game, the second of which was a 95th-minute Bruno Fernandes free-kick pushed away by Jose Sa.
Gary Neville emphasised the hopeless state of affairs, writing on Twitter: “It’s not good. It really isn’t!”
Paul Scholes also took to social media, blasting the latest slump as a ‘f***ing joke’.
Rangnick is on a temporary contract in the United until the end of the 2021-22 campaign.
In his first press conference, the former RB Leipzig chief suggested he would try and secure the job on a permanent contract.
But Ince does not expect that to be the case and believes ‘Mauricio Pochettino is the man’.
He added: “Do you see Ralf being the manager come the end of the season? The answer on the basis at this moment – and it is early doors – you’ve got to say no.
“I’m not sure if this job is a poisoned chalice. It’s the biggest job in the world, the biggest club in the world, but it’s like a poisoned chalice.”
This is a soft, soft teamPaul Ince
But it is not just the manager Ince targeted with his comments as he also aimed fire at the ‘lost’ players.
Luke Shaw came out and questioned the commitment and desire of his team-mates in front of a packed-out Old Trafford.
Ince agreed – and then highlighted their quality, too: “If I had a bad game, Roy Keane would be on to me, Peter Schmeichel… I don’t see that.
“They’re soft. This is a soft, soft team.
“Shaw talks about great players – I don’t see great players there.
“I see Cristiano Ronaldo, who’s a great player, but I don’t see anyone else great there.”
At half-time, with the scores level at 0-0, Ince described the United display as ‘dead’ – and singled out Jadon Sancho for having no impact on the game, eventually getting hooked on 76 minutes.
The 53-cap former England midfielder gave credit to his former side Wolves but said: “Based on the last game at Old Trafford, I thought Manchester United would come out the traps. It’s so dead.
“Wolves have controlled the whole game. It’s poor from Manchester United, it’s really, really poor. They need to liven up.
“I sense a bit of individuality about this team. Everyone wants to take the glory.
    JADED SANCHO
“There has to be some cohesion. They must be working on something in training. There must be patterns of play in training.
“The first half, they look lost. Jadon Sancho needs to get better. He is young and it does take time but I need to see more from him.”
Lastly, Ince had his say on the United captaincy.
Harry Maguire missed the Wolves defeat through injury as Rangnick gave the armband to Ronaldo ahead of David De Gea.
But after initially agreeing Ronaldo was the right choice, Ince revised his view.
The 54-year-old explained: “Maguire is the captain, but sometimes when your performances aren’t great, as Maguire’s haven’t been great, sometimes that armband can weigh a bit more on you.
“If you were to give it to someone, if I was Ralf Rangnick I would give it to Scott McTominay.
“Because I think the captain should be based off their performances and what he’s done on the pitch. He’s 25, it would be a nice learning curve for him.
“Now, why give it to Ronaldo when everyone’s moaning about him walking off the pitch every time United get beaten and not clapping the fans.
“It’s also about setting an example and I think the way McTominay is playing, give it to him – let him have a go.”
