      In truth, United were stumbling and stuttering their way to the most tepid of draws, with just 27 seconds of the three added minutes to play.
      But then Cristiano Ronaldo fed Anthony Martial on the left, who continued the move to fellow replacement Edinson Cavani even wider on the flank.
      The Uruguayan drilled over a low cross and there was Rashford – a 62nd minute sub for Anthony Elanga – to tap in from bang in front of an empty net.
      It sent Old Trafford wild – once VAR confirmed the goal would stand – and left the Hammers shaking their heads in disbelief at being denied a point, which was the very least they deserved.
      True, United had created most of what passed for a chance in the previous 92 minutes, but in the whole it was the most turgid of stalemates to that point.
      A top four finish? You wouldn’t have wagered too much on the Reds managing a Europa League-placed one beforehand.

      Eddie Howe is keen to bolster his squad in a bid to avoid relegation from the Premier League this season.
      With the backing of new owners – the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund – money is no object for the North East outfit.
      We reported yesterday that Newcastle are prepared to pay all of Lingard’s £100,000-a-week wages in order to bring him to the club until the end of the campaign.
      Now Sky Sports journalist Pete Graves says a permanent deal ‘is possible’ and that the player is interested in joining the relegation strugglers for a ‘big offer’ and that the ‘right price’ would convince United to sell.
      The England international’s contract expires at Old Trafford in the summer – meaning this is likely to be the last opportunity for Man Utd to receive some kind of financial remuneration for the player.
      And given his lack of game time, Ralf Rangnick and the United board may feel it suits them to offload Lingard now.

      CRISTIANO RONALDO hit the headlines last night with his latest tantrum against Brentford.The superstar, now aged 36, was warned after his return to Old Trafford last summer that he cannot expect to play every game.

      But that did not stop him from storming off and throwing his coat to the floor after Ralf Rangnick hauled him off in the 3-1 win at Brentford.
      Ronaldo put his hands on his hips and trudged away after being replaced with 20 minutes to play on Wednesday night – just moments after he produced a stunning piece of skill for United’s second goal.
      Ronaldo was furious when he was the victim of a double change from interim boss Rangnick – despite it being his first game after injury.
      The German boss tried to hug the Portugal legend as he went off but Ron had his arms wide open by his side and looked straight ahead as he took a seat on the steps near the dugout rather than the bench.
      Rangnick later went over for a word and that eventually appeared to cool down as he watched United see out a comfortable victory.
      CR7 does not like missing minutes, particularly when he feels there are goals for him to score.

      The Red Devils appointed Ralf Rangnick as interim boss until the end of the season after sacking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in November.
      But he will move upstairs in the summer as the club search for a long-term successor.

      Now Spanish outlet Marca claim that he will return to the dug-out in his homeland.
      And there is widespread speculation he is heading to PSG.

      Now they are looking to seal pre-contract agreements with two other stars as they eye a second-successive cost-effective summer window, according to reports. 
      And ESPN claims that PSG hope to secure the two major signings in order to help convince Kylian Mbappe to stay.
      Both Pogba and Kessie, who has been targeted by Tottenham, have both entered the final six months of their contracts and are able to negotiate with foreign clubs.
      United have allegedly offered Pogba an extension but the Frenchman, 28, has so far failed to agree to the terms.

      MANCHESTER UNITED legend Rio Ferdinand believes almost every player at the club is ‘a shadow of their former self’ as he questioned Ralf Rangnick’s management.The Red Devils are currently way down in seventh in the Premier League after blowing a two-goal lead to draw at Aston Villa on Saturday.

      Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked in November before he was replaced in the dug-out by interim boss Rangnick.
      But things have failed to improve with Cristiano Ronaldo’s explosive interview last week criticising some of the younger players in the squad failing to help matters.
      Now Ferdinand has backed his ex-Old Trafford team-mate and insists United have failed to raise their game since Rangnick took charge.
      Speaking on the Vibe with Five podcast, he said: “The manager talked in his first press conference about improving players and I’m still yet to see that.
      “Has he had enough time on the training ground will be his argument I’m sure. But these players need improvement because they’re not doing it.
      “Almost every player, to a man, is a shadow of their former self. I don’t see anyone going best the levels they were at before as yet.
