      ‘He’ll be captain until end of season’ – Man Utd boss Ralf Rangnick slams Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo rift rumours

      RALF RANGNICK had rubbished suggestions as ‘nonsense’ that he has held talks over sacking Harry Maguire as captain and giving the armband to Cristiano Ronaldo.The Manchester United interim manager also insisted that the atmosphere within the dressing room described is anything but toxic.

      Maguire took to social media to blast reports that he was being asked to step down to take some pressure off him.
      The 28 year old who has been struggling for form said on Twitter: “I’ve seen a lot of reports about this club that aren’t true.
      “Not going to start posting about everything that is written but I needed to make this one clear.
      “We’re united and focused on Sunday.”
      Rangnick backed him up to the hilt, saying : “It’s absolutely nonsense.
      “I am the manager of this club and I have never spoken to any player about changing the captaincy.

      “I have not spoken to Harry, I have not spoken to Cristiano. They know that.
      “This is not an issue and there is no reason to change.
      “Harry is the captain and he will stay our captain until the end of the season.
      “There is nothing more to say about this.”
      The German also hit out over the story that he dressing room is split by cliques amidst a power struggle between skipper Maguire and CR7.
      Asked if any such split left him frustrated, he declared: “I’m not frustrated at all because I know this is not the truth.
      “I told you already about Harry being the captain.
      “This is not an issue at all and it has never been an issue for us and for myself as the manager.

      Rangnick pointed to the departures of Donny van de Beek and Anthony Martial  as reasons why things within United are more united than they have been for some time.
      He stressed :“I had heard about what was written.
      “I can only tell you from my personal experience over the last eleven, twelve weeks.
      “Yes, there were player that were unhappy until the closure of the window because I always said the squad was too big.
      “We had too many players who just realised they wouldn’t get game time – this is the truth, for sure.
      “But what I can tell you is that the atmosphere in the locker room is better than it used to be a couple of weeks ago.”
      As he looked forward to Sunday’s visit to Elland Road and a clash with Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United he added: “So now it is about performing well.
      “Getting together on the pitch, getting the best out of our performance and winning games.
      “This is our job. All the other things we have no influence on at all.”

      From FA Cup hero to leading the sack race, it’s been a chastening time for the Leicester boss.
      One win from six leaves them closer to bottom than fourth and battling it out for ninth, which would be their worst finish since 2018-19 when Rodgers replaced Claude Puel in the February.
      Injuries, especially in defence, have crippled the Foxes, who have conceded the fifth most goals in the Premier League.
      They remain in the Europa Conference League but were embarrassingly dumped out of the FA Cup by rivals Nottingham Forest, and defeat at Wolves on Sunday could prove critical for Rodgers.

      Victory at West Ham in January moved Leeds nine points clear of danger and looked to have got them back on track.
      But just one point from their last three has closed the gap to six with a nasty run against Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham on the horizon.
      Bielsa only signs one-year deals and has given no indication yet as to whether he wants to stay next season.
      The Argentine will forever be loved in West Yorkshire and won’t be sacked, but there is a sense that he could be nearing the end of his time at Elland Road.

      Monday’s 2-0 win against Brighton relieved some pressure on the German and put Manchester United in pole position to claim fourth.
      Securing Champions League football is a must for Rangnick’s short reign to be considered a success before he leaves the dug-out to become a consultant and help in the search for a new manager.
      But with Arsenal just four points behind with three games in hand, the Red Devils can ill afford any more slip ups, starting at arch rivals Leeds on Sunday.

      Less than four months into the job and it already looks like Antonio Conte’s marriage of inconvenience with Tottenham will end in divorce.
      The Italian was not happy with Spurs’ January business and is cutting an increasingly frustrated figure.
      Three league defeats on the spin leaves them with an almighty battle to finish fourth.
      And if there is no Champions League football at Tottenham next season, few would be surprised if Conte is not around beyond the summer.
      So a trip to face Man City on Sturday night is just what he’s have wanted…

      Surely not even Watford would sack three managers in a season!
      Then again, if anyone was going to, it would be them.
      Veteran Roy Hodgson will still fancy his chances of dragging them out of the drop zone but, three games into his reign, it’s looking unlikely.
      Brought in until the end of the campaign, the most likely outcome looks like relegation before the hunt starts for ANOTHER manager.
      It’s unlikely Steven Gerrard will take pity on him when Watford travel to Villa Park on Saturday afternoon.

      Thomas Frank’s job looks safe but Brentford’s form has tanked – the Bees have lost seven of their last nine – and they are in real danger of being dragged into a relegation dogfight, especially given they have played more games than those around them.
      Sean Dyche has been here and come out the other side plenty of times before but they’ve won one game all season, leaving the seven point gap to safety looking a challenge too far.
      Patrick Vieira won rave reviews at the start of the season but Crystal Palace are without a league win since December 12 and need a couple of wins sharpish to ensure they face a stress-free spring.  More

      In a feature with The Telegraph, the ex-Liverpool man questions whether the Portuguese captain and his individual skillset are suitable for Rangnick’s pressing system.
      The tele pundit says that despite the goals, the Red Devils were a ‘more balanced, unified team’ before Ronaldo was on the scene.
      He said: “United made a mistake re-signing Ronaldo last summer.
      “It will be a bigger one keeping him next season.”
      The strops and hissy fits when the phenom is substituted only add to the ‘noise’ around Old Trafford, claims Carragher.
      “Ronaldo cannot ignore where a lot of that noise comes from.

      Bruno Fernandes relishing facing Leeds at Elland Road and vows to make Man Utd fans proud

      BRUNO FERNANDES reckons he will revel in the cauldron of hate that awaits Manchester United at Elland Road on Sunday.The Portugal star is braced for his first experience of a trip to Leeds with fans after last season’s goalless draw was played behind closed doors due to Covid.

      Their last Premier League visit to Elland Road in front of a baying crowd came back in October 2003 but Fernandes says he cannot wait to face the rivalry across the Pennines.
      The midfielder 27, said: “Last season we played at Leeds without fans and my team-mates were saying it is a tough place to be as a Manchester United player.
      “But I like that kind of atmosphere when everything is against you because it makes you give a little bit more and be a little bit better. You also know your fans will be there for you.
      “You have to make them be proud of you and give something back to them because they will go there to support us.
      “We know the games the fans feel more are Leeds, Liverpool and  Manchester City. They are the ones they want us to win more than  anyone else.
      “The fans love to see us win. The most important thing for us is to get as many wins as possible.”
