Roy Keane recalls giving Man Utd team-mate Peter Schmeichel a BLACK EYE after incredible 4am fight after boozy night out

ROY KEANE has revealed how he once gave fellow Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel a black eye after a boozy night out.The stars were two of the most vocal characters inside the dressing-room during the 1990s as the Red Devils climbed back to the top under Sir Alex Ferguson.

But the club’s former captain Keane has now admitted that both Fergie and club icon Sir Bobby Charlton were left mortified after a hotel bust-up between the former midfielder and goalie.
Keane, who recently snubbed a return to Sunderland as manager, said: “When I was injured and I came back Peter Schmeichel didn’t want to give me the captaincy so there was a bit of tension between us.
“Good tension. We don’t like each other but I’m glad you’re my goalkeeper, you know what I mean.
“We were on pre-season, drinking as usual until three or four in the morning. I said something to Peter and he was waiting for me outside of the room.
“I went back to Nicky Butt’s room for a club sandwich, really exciting stuff. There was no women or heroin, it was a club sandwich.
“I came out of the room and Peter’s waiting and he says ‘I’ve had enough of you!’.

“I remember I was coming round and I was thinking ‘you’ve had enough of me? Let’s get it on’.
“Obviously we had a fight. It seemed like ages, but I’m guessing it was like two or three minutes.”
Keane, now a hugely-popular Sky Sports pundit, continued: “Believe it or not Nicky Butt was involved, Butty’s always on the scene.
“If something’s going on Nicky Butt’s there somewhere. Good or bad he’s on the fringes — sort of like when he played.
“The next morning, I’m rooming with Denis Irwin, and this is the funny bit because we’re late for the bus. Denis Irwin is the most straight guy, I reckon he still goes to Mass every Sunday, so straight.
“Denis is going ‘Roy, we’re late’ and I’m saying ‘Denis, f***ing shut up will you. You’re giving me a headache’.
“We’re getting our bags ready, he’s shouting at me and my hand was really sore. I said to Denis ‘I’m sure I was fighting last night, but I can’t remember’.
    RAGING FERGIE
“We get on the bus and Ferguson’s going mad. I get to the back of the bus and ask Butty what happened.
“I say ‘I vaguely remember, was I fighting with Peter?’ And Peter had glasses on and this is early in the morning.
“We land wherever we go on to. There’s a press conference and two players had to do it and it was me and Peter.
“Eventually Peter takes his glasses off and he’s got a bit of a black eye.
“Ferguson pulled us when we got back to Manchester; he was mad and said ‘the two of you are a disgrace to the club and you’re going to get fined’.
“He says Sir Bobby Charlton was on the same floor as us and said we were a disgrace, I was thinking ‘he could have broke the fight up!’”
However, The Mirror states that Keane added: “Honestly, we had a great dressing room. Peter’s held his hand up since, again it was a late night believe it or not. It’s never over breakfast is it.
“To be fair to Peter, I’ll give him a little bit of credit, he said ‘gaffer, gaffer, it was my fault, I was waiting for him’. So he took the fall for it and after that we were okay.
“It was good to get rid of that tension between us. It was a good fight.”

Arsenal idol Thierry Henry and Jamie Carragher tear into Man Utd’s ‘unmanageable’ superstars amid record trophy drought

THIERRY HENRY and Jamie Carragher have torn into Manchester United’s ‘unmanageable’ stars. The Red Devils are set to equal their longest trophy drought since they were last relegated… 48 YEARS ago.

United are out of the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup, and while Anthony Elanga came off the bench to secure a draw in the first leg of their last-16 Champions League tie at Atletico Madrid last night, not many fancy Ralf Rangnick’s side to go all the way.
Now Arsenal legend Henry and Liverpool great Carragher have ripped into the Red Devils flops and believe that some of them are actually ‘unmanageable’ after years of failure.
Henry told CBS Sport: “The way they play is not United. It’s not the United I know – I don’t know what it is.
Carragher jumped in and asked: “Do you think the Manchester United we’ve seen over the last four or five years are actually unmanageable?
“We are talking about the structure of a football club, the players they have. They have had five or six managers – some of them have won Champions Leagues.
“You talked about Ajax being your favourite Champions League team – Louis van Gaal was the coach. He’s managed Manchester United.

“Jose Mourinho, he’s been in there, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, a legendary figure. Ralf Rangnick now, the top of gegenpressing, the way that teams play now.
“I look at that, and there’s different football clubs at different levels and no matter who goes in they can’t seem to get it right.
“Now is it at that stage where the structure from top to bottom, the Glazers and the players they have, recruitment…”
Henry jumped in and responded: “I don’t like usually to have a go at players but like you said, you had a teacher like Louis van Gaal who is successful, then they called Mourinho a ‘dictator’ because he was too much into this and that and too direct with the players.
“Suddenly you have a friend and they liked Solskjaer because he was more of a dad and nice guy. But when is it going to be about the players?
“They have to deliver. I repeat – it’s Manchester United and when you play for Man United you have got to deliver.
“Regardless of who the coach is, it cannot always be the coach. “I’m sorry but those guys need to perform and start to understand where they are.”

Ralf Rangnick reveals he had to talk Man Utd hero Anthony Elanga into staying after wonderkid demanded January transfer

MANCHESTER UNITED boss Ralf Rangnick has revealed he persuaded Anthony Elanga to stay at the club after he demanded a loan move. The 19-year-old has been one of United’s best players recently, and scored just five minutes after coming on in the Champions League draw with Atletico Madrid.

But Elanga found chances in the first XI hard to come by under previous gaffer Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, which prompted him to push for a loan move – with the Championship believed to be the chosen destination.
But Rangnick, 63, blocked his exit after being impressed with what he saw of the teenager in training.
Speaking after the Atletico game, the 63-year-old said: “Apart from his name, of course, I had heard about his name before but not as a player because he didn’t play for Manchester United.
“The first training session the night before the Crystal Palace game, he was the player with the best training performance.
“I asked my staff members about him and found out he had almost already decided to leave the club on loan.
“So a week after the Palace game I said, listen, I want you stay and see how you are doing in the training games until the end of the closure of the transfer window.

“I think right now he has just shown what is possible in football with the right mentality, the right approach, this is exactly what he did and what he always does in every training session.”
Elanga was named on the bench for the game in Spain, which might have surprised many United fans following his recent performances.
He scored in the 4-2 win against Leeds in the Premier League at the weekend and helped turn the game back in United’s favour.
Rangnick continued: “In all the games he has played so far, he just shows that he’s playing with all the passion and all the fun, he’s just enjoying himself on the pitch.
“He’s fully aware of his strengths, of his assets and his weapons. He is always trying to play and show those weapons. This is what he did today.

“Apart from the goal he scored, he had two or three great runs and whenever he did that you could all of a sudden see Atletico had problems with this kind of approach.
“But we have to show this with other positions as well, not only Anthony Elanga.
“We have to play like this in every single position and if we want to proceed in the qualifiers in the next few weeks at Old Trafford we have to play exactly like that.”

Elanga is the latest star to come through the ranks of Man Utd’s academy but who are the top five academy products?
    1. Sir Bobby Charlton
Man Utd legend Charlton tops the list as United’s best ever academy graduate.
The former midfielder was also a survivor of the Munich air crash which took the lives of multiple players and members of staff in 1958.
Charlton went on to win multiple titles for the Red Devils and won the World Cup with England in 1966.
In the same year as the Three Lions’ only World Cup triumph to date, Charlton won the prestigious Ballon d’Or award, beating Eusebio and Franz Beckenbauer.

    2. Ryan Giggs
Ryan Giggs was a part of the Class of ’92 that helped solidify United as one of the best teams in world football.
The Welshman had a long lasting career, making his debut in 1990 and he retired in 2014.
Giggs made 945 appearances for United, scoring 164 and assisting 250.
The winger won 13 Prem titles, four FA Cups, two Champions Leagues and three League Cups.
United also won nine Community Shields, one Super Cup and one Club World Cup with Giggs in the first-team.

    3. George Best
Best was one of the most technically gifted footballers to pull on United’s famous red colours.
The Northern Irishman was a supreme dribbler, excellent finisher and fearless against the defenders in the 60s.
And with him spearheading the attack, United won two league titles and a European Cup.
On an individual level, Best won the Ballon d’Or in 1968.

    4. Paul Scholes
Like Giggs, Scholes was a part of the Class of 92′.
Scholes also happens to be one of the best midfielders to play for Man Utd.
He won 11 Prem titles, two Champions League titles, four FA Cups, three League Cups, five Community Shields, one Club World Cup and one Intercontinental Cup during his time at the club.
Scholes retired from professional football in 2011 – but he returned to play for United again in the 2012–2013 season amid a midfield injury crisis.
The midfielder won his last Prem titles with the club and retired again in May 2013.

    5. David Beckham
Becks was one of the finest midfielders of his generation.
He was – and arguably still is – one of the most marketable football figures in the world.
He graduated from the academy alongside the likes of Giggs and the Neville brothers.
‘Golden Balls’ won 13 major trophies with the Red Devils before moving on to play for Real Madrid after an altercation with legendary boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

Man Utd ‘remain confident of landing top transfer targets like Rice this summer’ even without Champions League

MANCHESTER UNITED ‘remain confident they can attract their top targets’ – even if they fail to qualify for the Champions League. The Red Devils have a four-point advantage ahead of West Ham in fifth after victories over Brighton and Leeds.

However, Arsenal, Wolves and Tottenham all have games in hand and can overtake Ralf Rangnick’s side if they can put a run together.
The German coach is only in charge on an interim basis as the club continue their search for a new permanent boss, with Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag the frontrunners for the job.
Funds have been promised to whoever takes over with West Ham midfielder Declan Rice believed to be one of their top targets.
That is despite the England midfielder now being valued at £120million.
Now ESPN claims that United are confident they can secure the players they want even if they are only playing in the Europa League next season.
The report states that Old Trafford sources pointed out that they made Paul Pogba their club-record signing for £89m back in 2016 despite them not being in the Champions League.

Whoever takes charge will also have a number of contract decisions to make as well as going for transfer targets.
Cristiano Ronaldo, Luke Shaw, Marcus Rashford, Fred and David de Gea will all be out of contract in June 2023.
United are still currently in the Champions League after Anthony Elanga came off the bench to earn a 1-1 draw in Atletico Madrid in the last-16 first leg clash last night.

Paul Pogba consoled on bench after being subbed by Man Utd after just 66 minutes during poor display at Atletico Madrid

PAUL POGBA was consoled on the bench after being hauled off before Manchester United sneaked a late Champions League comeback draw.Below-par Pogba and Victor Lindelof – surprisingly playing at right-back – were the first two of FIVE players substituted as Anthony Elanga came on to equalise from United’s first shot on target away to Atletico Madrid.

Midfielder Pogba’s Old Trafford future is in doubt amid reports the Red Devils are eying replacements for when his contract expires this summer.
And the French World Cup hero stared straight ahead as he was patted on the back while he sat in the dugout following his disappointing 66 minutes.
Some fans on social media labelled his performance ‘shocking’ and one fan dubbed it ‘the worst I’ve seen’.
But others rated it ‘mixed’ and pointed out Pogba has just returned after three months out with a thigh injury.
That means interim boss Ralf Rangnick will surely not be expecting great things too soon.
But a last-16 tie is too important to ease players back.

And Atletico were controlling possession after Joao Felix headed Diego Simeone’s men in front early on.
Rangnick brought on anchorman Nemanja Matic for Pogba and full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka for Lindelof.
Alex Telles and Elanga then replaced Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford respectively.
And Elanga nipped onto Bruno Fernandes’ pass to drill home on 80 minutes.
Another midfielder who, like Pogba, could depart this summer came on – Jesse Lingard substituting for Jadon Sancho – as United clung on for a useful first-leg stalemate.

Man Utd verdict: Rangnick got tactics wrong but came up trumps with his subs as Elanga saves boss vs Atletico Madrid

RALF RANGNICK cannot keep relying on his Swedish teenage star to make an El of an impact off the bench. But at least the Manchester United boss was brave enough to fix his tactical mistakes to help his team get a result.

But his decision to start Victor Lindelof was the wrong oneCredit: AFP
The Red Devils were pegged back for nearly all of the first half by Atletico Madrid but escaped from the Spanish capital with a vital draw thanks to Anthony Elanga.
The 19-year-old came off the bench for the second-straight game to score and earn a vital Champions League last-16 first leg draw.
But despite battling back from Joao Felix’s early header, there are still plenty of questions for Rangnick.
The surprise choice of Victor Lindelof at right-back in place of Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot raised a few eyebrows but it failed to provide a spark that Ralf Rangnick was looking for.
His two defensive rivals offer far more going forward and are a lot more comfortable on the ball, which resulted in United having no outlet on the right.
He made a great sliding challenge to deny Jose Luis Gimenez early on and got a couple of clearances in, but in truth the Swede was given the runaround all night by Renan Lodi and Joao Felix.

With half an hour on the clock, Lindelof to Raphael Varane was the highest pass combination in the match – and that told you everything you needed to know about they starved Marcus Rashford.
Alongside him it was Raphael Varane, who is still failing to show the composure he showed at Real Madrid, and Harry Maguire, whose slow reaction allowed Felix’s header to open the scoring, and Luke Shaw down the left.
And the four of them had plenty of work to do throughout the opening period as Atletico’s press had United on the ropes.
Not that the Red Devils made it hard for the LaLiga champions as everyone came short instead of running behind, a piece of cake for Diego Simeone’s men.
Up top the frustrated Cristiano Ronaldo hardly got a kick and had to wait until the 36th minute for his first opportunity against his old city rivals.
Rashford wasted one chance to tee-him up while Jadon Sancho also struggled to make an impact on his limited service.
And the stat that summed it all up was that United failed to have a single touch in the opposition box in the first half of a Champions League game for the first time since the 2005/06 season.
United legend Paul Scholes hit the nail on the head at half time when he told BT Sport that his old team had been ‘bullied’ and ‘that all the problems have come down the right side’ where Lindelof was.
    CH-CH-CHANGES
But fair play to Rangnick, shortly after the restart he quickly made amends with a triple sub.
The awful Paul Pogba was hooked for the second straight game and replaced with Nemanja Matic to add more steel in the midfield and stop the Atletico press.
Lindelof’s misery was over as Aaron Wan-Bissaka took over at full-back and Alex Telles was deployed at the back on the other flank.
Instantly United looked stronger and began to press – but still talisman Ronaldo could not get involved.
The Red Devils were enjoying most of the possession but were lacking bite with the Portuguese legend, Jadon Sancho and Rashford all ineffective.
But when you have an ace up your sleeve like the talented teen Elanga then you always have a chance.
Bruno Fernandes was one of the worst performers on the pitch, but he showed a glimpse of his magic with the perfectly-weighted pass for the sub to latch on to a finish – albeit not as sweetly as he would have liked.
It’s plain to see that there is still plenty of work for United to do – as you can see from our player ratings – but the boss holding up his hands when he has got it wrong is always a good start to making things better.
