Struggling Man Utd spend £391MILLION on wages a year as club debt rises to half a BILLION pounds

MANCHESTER UNITED are paying their players £391MILLION in wages a year despite their struggles on the pitch. The Premier League giants posted their financial records today – and there are some startling figures.
The Glazers will be desperately hoping for some success on the pitch to recoup some of the club’s lossesCredit: News Group Newspapers Ltd
The clubs say that the increase in wages to £97.7m a quarter is due to ‘investment in the first-team playing squad’.
This takes in the three months up to December 31, with United comparing figures every quarter.
The wage figure released in November’s publication had United’s wages at £354m a year.
This was after the club shelled out mega-money for Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Ronaldo, currently going through a barren spell of goalscoring, is believed to earn around £510,000 a week.
Keeper David De Gea pockets around £375,000 a week.

United have also revealed that club debt is almost hitting half a BILLION pounds at £494.8m.
This is up 8.6 per cent compared to the same quarter in 2020.
Total operating expenses for the quarter were £179.7 million, an increase of £41.1 million, or 29.7 per cent, over the prior year quarter.
The document also reveals that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s compensation for being sacked was around £7m.
Total ‘exceptional items’ costings came to £10m – with members of the coaching team who also left paid out.
Overall, the club’s half-year revenue is UP 7.3 per cent on the same period from 2021, to £185.4m.
Results reflect the continued strength of our sponsorship revenues, supported by record-breaking digital fan engagementMan Utd’s chief financial officer
But having no fans inside Old Trafford due to the pandemic is still being worked through which could affect these figures.
Richard Arnold, who was recently appointed as United’s new chief executive, held a press conference today.
A statement from United’s chief financial officer read: “For the second fiscal quarter of 2022, we achieved robust revenue growth of 7.3 per cent despite the postponement of two matches in the quarter due to Covid-19.
“Results reflect the continued strength of our sponsorship revenues, supported by record-breaking digital fan engagement, in addition to the return of more normalised match-day operations.
“We look forward with optimism to the remainder of the fiscal year.”
United are facing a battle to get into the top four this season, two points clear of West Ham in fifth.
Ralf Rangnick was the man tasked with replacing Solskjaer, but he is expected to move into a consulting role at the end of the season.
The process is underway as to who takes the big job at Old Trafford, with PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino and Ajax’s Erik ten Hag believed to be the frontrunners.
In January SunSport reported that United’s revenues had fallen behind fierce rivals City’s for the first time ever.
City recorded operating revenues of £537m for last season – a jump of around 17 per cent on the previous 12 month period.
It also dwarfed the £464m brought in through broadcast, match day and commercial income across town at Old Trafford.
That report – produced by consultants KPMG – highlighted the impact the pandemic has had at the top end of English football.

And several members of his backroom team also got a pay-out in the subsequent weeks as changes were made in the dug-out.
Now United have revealed that they paid £10m in ‘exceptional items’ in the second quarter of the financial year.
That figure includes the compo to Solskjaer and ‘certain members of the coaching staff’ that departed.
It also takes into account revaluation of the Football League pension scheme deficit.
Michael Carrick stepped-up from coach to take over as caretaker after Solskjaer’s exit.
However, he left too within a fortnight along with first-team coach Kieran McKenna, now manager at Ipswich, and strength and conditioning specialist Martyn Pert.

United did not name the other coaches due to confidentiality.
United faced the hefty bill for the backroom staff having only just awarded them new long-term contracts several weeks before axing Solskjaer.
Solskjaer himself signed a new three-year deal in July after finishing second in the Premier League and reaching the Europa League final last season.
But the club’s form nosedived this term as they lost seven out of 13 games in all competitions, including a thrashing against Liverpool and a battering from Manchester City.
The club stuck by Solskjaer throughout the poor run, but the final straw came after United’s disastrous 4-1 defeat to Watford.
Ralf Rangnick was appointed as interim boss until the end of the season when a long-term permanent successor will be appointed.

Pep Guardiola names the only five Premier League teams who attack when they play Man City… and Man Utd isn’t one

PEP GUARDIOLA has named five Premier League teams who attack when they play Manchester City but snubs rivals Manchester United. The Spaniard named Liverpool as the first side that isn’t scared to go toe-to-toe with his title-winning side.
Guardiola is expecting a tough finish to the seasonCredit: REUTERS
Liverpool’s out-going, fearless approach when it comes to playing City isn’t seen across the whole league though.
City took on Everton on Saturday and came away with a narrow 1-0 win after spending 90 minutes trying to break the Toffees down.
Guardiola says most of the league adopt the approach of sitting in and making it difficult for his side.
He singled out five teams who give it a go against the defending Prem champions but SNUBBED rivals Man Utd.
Guardiola said: “Yeah [sitting deeper]. Maybe we provoke them but most of them except Liverpool I would say, Brighton I would say, Arsenal in some moments I would say … let me think about it, maybe I’m forgetting someone.
“Aston Villa, we played there a little bit too. There are moments when they did it.

“But as a principle, when we make a good build-up, they sit.
“Leeds, as well. The rest, they sit back. But, honestly, I’m not saying nothing wrong. Every manager, every team can do whatever they want, absolutely.
“It’s in our hands how to break them — teams that are high pressing, how to do it, and when teams sit back, how we have to do it.
“And one of the principles is be patient, don’t concede goals, don’t concede deep runs from them, counter attacks and be patient and in the right moment we can do it. Let’s continue doing it like this.”
Man City have 11 games left to defend their league title but Guardiola is expecting most games to be won by the thinest of margins.
He said: “Every game will be similar like we lived (at Everton).
“For sure. It’s finished the games with big margins of goals.
“Everyone is playing for Europa League, for the Champions League, to be champion, every game will be a battle so we have spoken about that.
“It’s not the first time we’ve been in this situation and we have learned from that in the past.
“That if you want to be champion in the Premier League, against this rival — Liverpool, they are not going to drop points — you have to do your job.
“In nearly all the games. We felt it in the past and we have to do it this year. So it’s not an exception.
“That’s why I give all incredible credit (to the players) after three Premier Leagues in the last four years we could be more naive or more arrogant in our behaviours and it’s completely the opposite.
“So still we have the humility to go here and everywhere to try and do our game, to respect the opponents a lot and try to win the games.
    Man City’s next five fixtures
“This is the best prize and the best achievement, as a manager and a staff, to inoculate in the hearts and the minds of the players that it doesn’t matter what happens, you have to try to do it again and again and again.
“I don’t know how it’s going to finish but we are going to try. Now FA Cup (vs Peterborough on Tuesday), derby, Champions League, Crystal Palace.
“Every game will be an incredible tough battle and you have to face every game knowing if we drop points it will be difficult to be champion.” More

Man Utd scout Joao Palhinha EIGHT times this season but face transfer battle with three league rivals for Sporting star

MANCHESTER UNITED have shown a vigorous interest in Sporting Lisbon star Joao Palhinha – by sending scouts to watch him EIGHT TIMES already this season. The Red Devils have been intensely scrutinizing Palhinha’s performances during this campaign ahead of a potential summer bid for the 26-year-old.

And United’s scouts have been to and fro from Portugal on just under ten occasions to make sure the defensive midfielder’s the right fit for the club, Record reported.
United were ardently chasing the dogged midfield ace last summer but were deterred by Sporting’s exorbitant £33million asking price.
But now Ralf Rangnick’s side have waded back into the fray for the Portuguese international after Sporting apparently lowered his asking price to £25m.
However, the Red Devils will face still competition from Premier League rivals Tottenham, Wolves and the uber-rich Newcastle who are also keen on recruiting Palhinha.
And it’s looking increasingly likely that Palhinha will join one of the afore-mentioned clubs as Record claim his heart’s set on a move to the Prem.
They even went as far as to suggest that Sporting’s prized asset has already got one foot out the door.

Sporting manager Ruben Amorim is eager for Palhinha to stay put but he’s resigned to the fact that the midfield menace may leave the club.
Despite the array of interest in Palhinha, United may have the edge in transfer proceedings as they’ve signed two former Sporting stars in the past.
Old Trafford is Palhina’s fellow countrymen Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo’s current home – and they both joined the Red Devils from the Portuguese titans.
Fernandes made the switch in 2019 for a reported mammoth fee of £70m.
While Ronaldo initially joined United from Sporting in 2003 – before leaving to conquer the globe and then heading back for a second spell last summer. More

Ronaldo has scored just ONE goal in his last ten games and has often cut a frustrated figure up front.
And according to the Manchester Evening News, boss Ralf Rangnick has ‘major reservations’ about the 37-year-old leading the line next season.
Rangnick is expected to take on a two-year consultancy role at the end of the season.
But he is sure to prepare comprehensive reports on the squad for the new man – which could be bad news for Ronaldo.
Rangnick’s ‘patience is wearing thin’ with the Portuguese star, and he has already highlighted the need for fresh blood in the final third.
And Osimhen could be the man tasked with leading next season’s charge.

Italian journalist and Napoli expert Ciro Venerato has hinted that United have already made contact with the player’s club.
But United will have to find around £90million if they want to sign the 23-year-old Nigeria international.
And they could lock horns with Premier League rivals Arsenal in the chase, with the Gunners also desperate for striking reinforcements.
Tutto Napoli have reported that Osimhen ‘can leave Napoli at the end of the season’ – providing chairman Aurelio De Laurentiis’s valuation is met.
Ronaldo looked far from happy after failing to score in a dull 0-0 draw with struggling Watford at the weekend.
The crestfallen Portugal hero – who has previously stormed down the tunnel after matches this season – stood still on the pitch with his hands on his hips.
He wagged his head and spat out in anger to the turf.
Rangnick’s side mustered a total of 22 shots in the 90 minutes.
Yet just three of those were on target against Watford’s defence, supported by ex-United goalkeeper Ben Foster in the Hornets net.

‘What are you dreaming at night?’ – Ralf Rangnick gives hilarious reaction to Man Utd fan’s Erling Haaland question

The star will be available due to a £64 million release clause in his contract this summer.
And as United’s interim boss signed autographs outside Old Trafford after Saturday’s goalless draw with Watford, he was met with pleas by supporters.
The German coach was being filmed signing a United No. 8 shirt when a fan asked him whether Haaland would be one of three ‘big names’ arriving before next season.
The two other names mentioned were West Ham midfielder Declan Rice and Sevilla defender Jules Kounde, both of whom have been linked with United.
But Rangnick amusingly had fellow supporters in stitches as he jokingly replied: “Who? What are you dreaming at night?!”
The footage soon went viral, with one fan commenting: “I love Ralf Rangnick.”

Another said: “I love Ralf’s honesty. He doesn’t hide anything & gives it all.”
While a fellow fan tweeted: “Hahaha…Man is a realist, knows the Glazers prefer to get another old striker, midfielder and defenders on a free transfer than spend money to make this club a joy to all of us the fans instead of their pockets.”
Rangnick is expected to move upstairs into a consultancy role in the summer and will have a considerable input into United’s transfer dealings.
Haaland, who has 19 goals in 17 games this season, is believed to be keen on a move to Spain.
However, if he does come to England then City would be his most likely destination.
His father Alf-Inge spent three years playing for the Cityzens.
And he would reportedly prefer him to go to his former club rather than Manchester United or Chelsea.
