Cristiano Ronaldo praised by Atletico Madrid fans after they notice Man Utd star’s classy gesture at Wanda Metropolitano

CRISTIANO RONALDO has been subject to some rare praise from Atletico Madrid fans after a thoughtful gesture at the Wanda Metropolitano. The Manchester United star is a long-time rival of Atletico, having spent nine years on the other side of town with Real Madrid.

But while walking off the field at the Wanda Metropolitano after United’s 1-1 Champions League draw, CR7 dodged the enormous Atletico Madrid badge on the ground.
Instead the 37-year-old striker walked around it before heading down the tunnel in a video posted by Spanish outlet AS.
As he approaches the badge, Ronaldo seems to take a slight step to his left to ensure he avoided treading on Atletico colours.
Meanwhile Manchester United coach Mike Phelan marched straight over the badge and back to the dressing room.
And Atletico fans seemed to appreciate the gesture, albeit through gritted teeth.
One supporter wrote on social media after the game: “I almost always hate him and he almost always paints our faces, but here, my respects.”

It’s high praise indeed for CR7, especially given his remarkable record against the club.
In 35 matches against Atletico prior to the first-leg last-sixteen clash nine days ago, Ronaldo netted past them 25 times.
That includes four hat-tricks, and two Champions League final triumphs against Diego Simeone’s side.
Ronaldo’s record against Atletico – before facing the Spanish giants with Man Utd nine days ago
In his entire career the only team he has scored more goals against than Atletico is Sevilla, with 27 against the fellow Spaniards.
But the Portuguese legend has only managed one assist against Sevilla – compared with the five he has accumulated against Atletico.
This takes his goal contributions against the LaLiga champions to 30 – more than any other side he has encountered.

Man Utd target world-class centre-back transfer ‘throwing Harry Maguire and two other defenders’ futures into doubt’

HARRY MAGUIRE’S future at Manchester United is reportedly in doubt as the club plot a swoop to sign a ‘world-class’ centre back.Stories emerged on Thursday that the captain’s team-mates are questioning why he is continually picked by interim boss Ralf Rangnick despite some poor displays.

Fresh doubts over the captain’s future have now been raisedCredit: Getty
The 28-year-old was rested for the draw with Watford and replaced by Victor Lindelof but looks set to return to the side for Sunday’s Manchester Derby.
Rangnick has supported his skipper publicly and insisted he will not take the armband off him.
However, the Daily Mail states that a ‘new centre-back will be high on United’s list of targets’ in the summer transfer window.
Chelsea star Antonio Rudiger becomes a free agent in June and the Red Devils are targeting the German.
Barcelona’s Uruguayan ace Ronald Araujo is another potential option while United have also been linked with Dortmund’s Manuel Akanji.
And it is not only Maguire that will be looking over his shoulder amid the club’s search for defensive improvements.

This latest report also states that both Eric Bailly and Phil Jones face uncertain futures at Old Trafford.
It also claims ‘that Maguire has upset a number of team-mates this season by openly blaming them on the pitch for making mistakes when his own form has been so erratic’ along with some of his post-match remarks in the media.
The player and club have also dismissed talk of a ‘power struggle’ between him and Cristiano Ronaldo.

English wonderkid Jamie Bynoe-Gittens is billed ‘the next Jadon Sancho’ after scoring twice for Dortmund vs Man Utd U19s

BORUSSIA DORTMUND may have finally found a replacement for Jadon Sancho in the form of English teen prodigy Jamie Bynoe-Gittens.Sancho left Dortmund to join Manchester United for £73million last summer after making his name with the Bundesliga side.

And now, Gittens, 18, has been touted as the man to fill Sancho’s void by German publication Bild after the winger’s phenomenal performance for Dortmund’s U19s against United’s teens in the UEFA Youth League.
Bynoe-Gittens was a constant thorn in United’s side – bombing up and down the wing in Sancho-esque fashion, SunSport reported.
He then went on to score a brace – including the decisive penalty as Dortmund knocked United out of the competition in a tense 2-2 thriller that ended in a shootout.
Critics instantly compared him to Sancho, 25, who also wore the No.7 shirt at Signal Iduna Park.
Just like his predecessor, Bynoe-Gittens also moved to Dortmund’s U19 squad after a spell at Manchester City.
The English counterparts also have a number of similarities off the pitch.

One is that they share the same agent – Emeka Obasi – who masterminded Sancho’s switch to Old Trafford.
Another thing the English pair have in common is that they both hail from London.
Following his ascent in Germany, Bynoe-Gittens will now be hoping to have the same career trajectory as Sancho who also thrived in Dortmund’s youth set-up before being promoted to their first team.
And Bynoe-Gittens will get the chance to shine like Sancho in Dortmund’s first-team quite soon judging by their U19’s coach’s assessment of him.
Mike Tullberg told Goal and SPOX: “He definitely has the talent to be part of the big stage at some point.
“We can’t, and don’t, want to slow him down.”
And there’s no slowing Bynoe-Gittens down at this point of his career, he’s scored nine goals in as many games across all competitions this season.
However, filling Sancho’s shoes won’t be an easy task for Bynoe-Gittens as the Man United ace scored 50 goals and provided 64 assists in 137 games across all competitions at Dortmund before packing his bags for Old Trafford. More

Man Utd’s Premier League trip to Liverpool postponed due to fixture pile-up after Reds’ win over Norwich in FA Cup

THIS month’s eagerly-anticipated Prem clash between Liverpool and Manchester United has been postponed due to the Reds’ midweek progression in the FA Cup.The match was scheduled for March 20 but a 2-1 fifth-round win over Norwich means the Merseysiders will now have cup commitments that weekend. United were knocked out by Middlesbrough last month.

The cancellation of the Sunday televised blockbuster will be disappointing to both sets of fans and many naturals.
Liverpool against Manchester United is one of the biggest clashes of any season with the pair amassing 39 titles between them.
The Reds’ 5-0 win at Old Trafford in October played a big part in the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjar the following month.
Newly-crowned Carabao Cup winners Liverpool are in contention to win an historic Quadruple this season, while United’s only chance of silverware seems to be in the Champions League.
The postponement means United’s last match of three this month will be at home to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on March 16. The tie is 1-1 after the first leg.
Liverpool will have five matches to play in March, including a March 8 Champions League visit from Inter Milan. Liverpool won 2-0 at the San Siro last month.

‘Sancho and Rashford not good enough’ – Anthony Elanga is only winger at Man Utd who can play as striker, says Parker

He told bettingexpert: “I think Elanga is the only one you can play as a striker or false nine.
“It does need a change. I’m trying to think of someone but Elanga out of all the wide players is the one who’s done really well.
“The other two, Sancho and Rashford, just haven’t been good enough so far.
    “We’ve seen already, they haven’t got a focal point, they haven’t got a centre-forward.”
The ex-England defender also warned that the Red Devils shouldn’t tinker with the 19-year-old’s position whilst things are working out.

“You don’t want to put too much on his shoulders, he’s still trying to build a career.
“You try not to put him in the limelight too much – ‘he’s gonna be the next this, he’s gonna be the next that’ – for all of a sudden, for too much going and it all falls apart, before he’s even evolved.
“A bit like what’s happened to Rashford.
“Elanga, you don’t want to put the onus on him, you don’t want his game to collapse cause all of a sudden he’s out of position and if it isn’t going right, he might think ‘oh, I’m better off out wide, I was playing good out there.'”
Neither Sancho and Rashford started in the drab 0-0 draw with relegation-threatened Watford last weekend, but both came off the bench.

Cristiano Ronaldo set to start for Man Utd against City despite goal drought with Rangnick hoping for return to form

RALF RANGNICK will stick with under-fire Cristiano Ronaldo for Sunday’s Manchester derby despite his goal drought. The United boss is hopeful that a week’s rest will have helped re-energise the footballing veteran who has just one goal from his last ten games.
Cristiano Ronaldo was a frustrated figure as he and Man Utd fired blanks against Watford but is still tipped to start at the Etihad
Marcus Rashford is an alternative to Cristiano Ronaldo but is short of confidence
Ronaldo, at 37, started his fifth game in 15 days last Saturday as the Red Devils fought out a goalless draw with Watford.
The veteran frontman missed a host of chances.
Rangnick, however, explained afterwards that he had few options but to play him.
Marcus Rashford could be an option for Sunday’s trip to The Etihad with Jadon Sancho and Anthony Elanga either side of him.
    But Rashford’s confidence looks shot.
Edinson Cavani has been complaining of a groin problem that has kept him out of action but he could be available.

Creating chances has not been the problem in the Premier League.
In the 13 games under Rangnick United have created 160 chances, more than any other club in that period, but only 20 goals have come from them.
Still Rangnick has faith that super-fit Ronaldo can find his scoring boots again.
The same boots that hit 14 goals in 20 games before his recent poor run.
His recent form, however, has brought into question whether he will stay at United for a second season having signed a two-year contract on his return.
SunSport has already revealed that the player himself will want to leave if the club finish outside the Champions League places.
There is an argument that his return to the club affected Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s long term planning having finished the previous season in second place
A number of the younger players have felt intimidated by him.
Interim chief Ralf Rangnick is set to keep faith with Cristiano Ronaldo
They feel they have to pass to him when he demands the ball and are concerned as to his reaction if they make a mistake.
The problem Solskjaer had was, how could he let him go to Manchester City?
He could be up to 20 goals by now for them in what is a much better team prompting criticism as to why United did not use their emotional pull to bring him back to Old Trafford where he first made his name.
It promises to be a red hot atmosphere for him on the blue side of the city on Sunday having turned down the Champions bid to land him.
It’s a crucial clash for both sides with City chasing the title and United in a battle for the top four.
City are currently six points ahead of second-placed Liverpool who have a game in hand.
United are clinging on to fourth spot by two points ahead of West Ham and Arsenal.
While the Hammers have played the same amount of games as United, Arsenal have three in hand.
