What is absolutely without doubt is that City are by far the best team in Manchester.
Have been for a very long time now, and likely to be for a long time to come.
The chasm in class between the blue and red halves of the city there for all to see here.
The best Manchester United could be described as on this evidence was plucky opponents.
For a short period they made it a bit of a contest.
The result, however, was never really in doubt even after Jadon Sancho in the 22nd minute levelled up Kevin De Bruyne’s fifth minute opener.

De Bruyne would get another on 28 before Riyad Mahrez made sure another three points were collected with his own double in the second half.
City had the outstanding player in the brilliant De Bruyne.
They had the magic at the feet of Phil Foden who just gets better and better.
In fact man for man City fill a combined eleven in every position. Only the goalkeeper’s shirt might be up for grabs.
The ‘oles’ as City passed the ball around and teased with their opponents must have been very uncomfortable for all of a red persuasion here at The Etihad.

City boss Pep Guardiola said on Friday that for them in the run-in ‘the games with big margins of goals are finished’.
But this could have been five or six.
While this as a big boost for City in the title race after Liverpool had closed to three on Saturday it was a huge blow to United’s top four title aspirations.
They are now fifth, a point behind Arsenal who beat Watford earlier in the day and Mikel Arteta’s side have three games in hand.
The Europa League beckons once more.

Rangnick’s plans ahead of the game had been thrown into some disarray with Cristiano Ronaldo driven home from training on Friday with a hip injury that ruled him out the game.
Defenders Luke Shaw and Raphael Varane had Covid, while Edinson Cavani – well who really cares anymore. Apparently he didn’t ‘feel quite well enough to play’. It’s a derby, for crying out loud.
Anyway plenty did want to play, although a few in Red may have want to hide for the next few day.
They certainly did as City calved them open with ease to grab that early lead.
Jack Grealish on the left found Bernardo and despite being faced with three United players he nipped to the byline and fired over a low cross.

It flew behind Harry Maguire, Alex Telles couldn’t get across and Kevin de Bruyne strode in to fire high into the net.
    United did briefly respond
Brune Fernandes flicked the ball through to the ever improving Fred whose slick turn put him in one-on-one but Ederson smothered his shot.
Then came a fine equaliser as they broke from deep in their own half.
It was a fine pinged through ball from on half way by Paul Pogba into the stride of the sprinting Sancho that set it up.

He held the ball up as City retreated and Kyle Walker guarded his route to goal.
But when Fernandes overlapped, Walker went with him giving Sancho the space to cut inside, evade John Stones, and curl a shot into the far bottom corner.
The normally understated Rangnick went crazy on the bench.
City hit back. Foden looped a header onto the top of the bar then De Bruyne grabbed his second as the ball fired around the United six-yard box like a pinball.
What a piece of skill it was by Phil Foden to set the chance up though. Think Gazza versus Scotland as he flicked the ball over the bemused victor Lindelof and hit a shot that demanded a top quality save by De Gea.

Bernardo followed up, his shot deflected to defender Telles who stuck out a boot and sent it towards De Bruyne to finish off.
City were already a gear ahead of United but they went through them in the second period as they laid siege to the visitors goal.
The third their dominance deserved arrived with this time De Bruyne the creator.
Most corners land in the middle of a skirmish in the six yard box.
De Bruyne decided to bypass all that picking out Mahrez on the top of the box.

His connection on the half volley was sweet but it still may not have found the bottom corner but for a slight deflection off Harry Maguire’s knee that sent it beyond the despairing dive of De Gea.
Rangnick had already made a double substitution in a bid to claw the game back in the form of Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard.
Nobody was pulling their way back from this.
Mahrez added the second in injury time, benefitting from great work by Ilkay Gundogan who broke through United’s wilting players.

Man Utd stars SHOCKED by Cristiano Ronaldo’s hotel no-show as striker ruled OUT of Manchester derby with injury

MANCHESTER UNITED stars have been left stunned after Cristiano Ronaldo failed to show up for their pre-match meet on Saturday night.Ronaldo was ruled out of the demoralising 4-1 defeat at the hands of Manchester City on Sunday afternoon with a hip flexor injury.

SunSport understands United stars were left shocked after Ronaldo failed to join his team-mates for their one-night stay at The Lowry.
He was ruled out of the derby clash at the Etihad after picking up a knock and opted not to travel with the team.
But members of the squad believed a player as senior as Ronaldo should have joined them for support ahead of such a massive game.
The decision not to travel with the squad follows reports last month that United’s stars were involved in a dressing room rift over whether it was right to ditch Mason Greenwood.
Another well-placed United source said in January that a number of players feel certain senior team-mates have too much sway with interim boss Ralf Rangnick on big decision.
A source said: “The players have their own cliques, one of which is making the others feel like they need to step up a level when it is the whole team that’s struggling.”

Ronaldo was absent as Rangnick and the Manchester United squad met up at The Lowry hotel as part of their pre-match routine.
As Harry Maguire, Bruno Fernandes and Co reported for duty on Saturday night, Ronaldo was nowhere to be seen.
Edinson Cavani, Raphael Varane and Luke Shaw were also missing as United players entered the plush hotel in Manchester city centre.
Ronaldo did take part in full training on Wednesday, but his last minute injury picked up on Friday leaves United short of options up front for the mouthwatering clash.
Speaking on the reason for CR7’s absence, Rangnick said: “Cristiano had some problems with his hip flexor on Friday and since then didn’t play.”
Greenwood’s arrest and Cavani’s injury woes leaves Rangnick looks weak in attack for a game that could make or break United’s season.
Man Utd’s starting XI at the Etihad
Club legend Gary Neville though reckons Ronaldo’s absence is ‘not a big loss’ against Manchester City.
He said on Sky Sports before the drubbing: “Actually Cristiano not being in the team, I could never say it’s a positive, but actually I don’t see it as the big loss that I might do in other games.
“Because I actually think on the counter attack Manchester United need to be dangerous today, and they’re better off with Rashford up front counter attacking than they would be with Cristiano I think.”
Neville though was way off with his match prediction as a spineless United performance resulted in a demoralising 4-1 defeat.
Rangnick’s side were picked apart at the hands of their rivals, with Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez both scoring twice.
Jadon Sancho was one bright spark for the Red Devils and gave the visitors hope with a fine curling effort before the floodgates opened.
But overall it was a day to forget.
The result leaves United fifth in the Premier League table, a point behind fourth-placed Arsenal, but having played THREE games more.

Kevin De Bruyne fired City ahead with just five minutes on the clock.
And United, missing several stars including crocked Cristiano Ronaldo, looked unable to cope as they were swamped all over the pitch.
However, a rare break came in the 22nd minute for Ralf Rangnick’s side.
A swift ball up the field saw United launch a quick counter attack against City’s threadbare defence.
Sancho picked the ball up outside City’s box before turning inside to create space.
And just as John Stones blocked Ederson’s view to the ball, Sancho let loose with a fine effort which curled past the Brazilian goalie and into the far corner.

United fans and Sancho’s teammates erupted in scenes of jubilance.
But the England star showed his class by refusing to celebrate the incredible strike.
Sancho joined City aged 14 from Watford in 2015 and was rated as one of their top academy prospects.
However, he left in 2017 following a contract dispute, eventually joining German giants Borussia Dortmund.
And last summer saw Sancho join City’s fierce rivals United for a whopping £73million fee.
However, his goal-scoring joy at the Etihad did not last very long.
That’s because De Bruyne fired City ahead with his second of the game just six minutes later.
Riyad Mahrez then put City 3-1 up in the 68th minute as United imploded.
And City ensured a dominant scoreline when Mahrez netted his second in the 90th minute for a 4-1 final scoreline.

Cristiano Ronaldo ‘not a big loss’ for Man Utd in crunch City derby says Neville with striker ruled out with injury

MANCHESTER UNITED missing Cristiano Ronaldo through injury for this afternoon’s crunch derby is ‘not a big loss’, according to Gary Neville.Ronaldo was a no-show for the team meet on Saturday night, with United stars left stunned at his decision not to join up with the squad.
Neville reckons Ronaldo’s absence could actually suit Man Utd when playing rivals CityCredit: AFP
His absence, combined with Edinson Cavani’s injury woes, means Marcus Rashford is set to lead the line at the Etihad.
But Neville reckons that could play right into United’s hands when it comes to their counter attacking playing style.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville said: “United over the last three or four years, particularly under Ole [Gunner Solskjaer] were a counter attack team.
“[They were] really comfortable sitting back, punching out through [Marcus] Rashford and others on the break.”
“And I think that will be exactly the same today, and actually Cristiano not being in the team, I could never say it’s a positive, but actually I don’t see it as the big loss that I might do in other games.
“Because I actually think on the counter attack Manchester United need to be dangerous today, and they’re better off with Rashford up front counter attacking than they would be with Cristiano I think.”

Neville’s comments come despite Ronaldo comfortably being United’s top scorer this season.
He’s found the back of the net 15 times in all competitions, six times more than next highest scorer Bruno Fernandes.
Nevertheless Neville reckoned the ageing Ronaldo doesn’t really suit the counter attacking tactic needed when facing Pep Guardiola’s City.
How Man Utd could start the derby clash without Ronaldo
Ronaldo was pictured in full training on Wednesday but picked up a knock late in the week that has ruled him out of the mammoth derby clash.
He then chose not to travel to the plush Lowry Hotel for United’s pre-match meet, a decision that left his fellow team-mates stunned.
SunSport understands United stars were shocked when Ronaldo failed to join the squad for their one-night hotel stay.
Members of the dressing room believed a player as senior as Ronaldo should have joined them for support ahead of such a massive game, regardless of whether he is injured for the fixture.

And the 24-year-old looks certain to play as No9 with both Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani set to miss out due to injury.
United head into the showdown in desperate need of boosting their top four hopes and ending their striking woes.
They had 22 shots against Watford last week but were still unable to prevent being held to a stalemate by the Hornets.
But Rangnick was happy to give Rashford, who only has five goals this term, a huge vote of confidence going into the City showdown.
And he vowed to help him rediscover his goalscoring boots.
The interim United boss said: “With Marcus Rashford, we have another player who I will insist and continuously be behind him and with him, to develop him.

Man Utd stars SHOCKED by Cristiano Ronaldo’s hotel no-show with striker ruled OUT of Manchester derby with injury

MANCHESTER UNITED stars have been left stunned after Cristiano Ronaldo failed to show up for their pre-match meet on Saturday night.Ronaldo has been ruled out of the mammoth clash against Manchester City later this afternoon through injury.

SunSport understands United stars were left shocked after Ronaldo failed to join his team-mates for their one-night stay at The Lowry.
He has been ruled out of the derby clash at the Etihad after picking up a knock and opted not to travel with the team.

Ronaldo did take part in full training on Wednesday, but his last minute injury leaves United short of options up front for the mouthwatering clash.
Greenwood’s arrest and Cavani’s injury woes leaves Rangnick looks weak in attack for a game that could make or break United’s season.
Club legend Gary Neville though reckons Ronaldo’s absence is ‘not a big loss’ against Manchester City.
He said on Sky Sports: “Actually Cristiano not being in the team, I could never say it’s a positive, but actually I don’t see it as the big loss that I might do in other games.
    🔴 𝐓𝐄𝐀𝐌 𝐍𝐄𝐖𝐒 🔴Introducing our Reds for the derby ⚔️#MUFC | #MCIMUN— Manchester United (@ManUtd) March 6, 2022

“Because I actually think on the counter attack Manchester United need to be dangerous today, and they’re better off with Rashford up front counter attacking than they would be with Cristiano I think.”
Three draws in five Premier League games have hampered United’s grip on a prized Champions League place.
But a morale boosting win against City this afternoon could be the start of a winning run between now and the end of the season, with 11 Premier League games left to play.
Although Rangnick and his shocked stars will have to do it without top scorer and star man Ronaldo.

Man Utd plot transfer swoop for Boro star Isaiah Jones as Tottenham ‘ask to be kept informed’ on wing-back’s future

MANCHESTER UNITED are reportedly one of a host of clubs tracking Middlesbrough starlet Isaiah Jones. The 22-year-old has gone from non-league unknown at Tooting & Mitchham to one of the Championship’s brightest stars in over the past two years.

Jones shone again last Tuesday at wing-back as Boro dumped Tottenham out of the FA Cup.
And 90 Min claims that his display led to Tottenham ‘asking to be kept informed’ over his future.
But United are allegedly ready to battle Spurs for any potential swoop should Chris Wilder’s side decide to cash-in.
And the Red Devils are not the only club monitoring the progress of Jones.
West Ham and Crystal Palace are both reportedly watching him closely along with fellow Premier League clubs Brighton and Brentford.
And European powerhouses Atletico Madrid, Ajax and RB Leipzig are keeping an eye on things as well.

However, promotion-chasing Boro are under no pressure to sell the new fan favourite.
Jones, who has eight assists in the Championship this season, recently signed a new long-term deal to stay at the Riverside until 2025.
Djed Spence, who is now wanted by Spurs and Arsenal, was allowed to head to Nottingham Forest on a season-long loan after Jones’ brilliant start to the campaign.
And Boro are expected to cash in on him instead once the summer window opens rather than lose their star man.

Cristiano Ronaldo can be forgiven for wondering what could have been at Man City as struggling United prepare for derby

CRISTIANO RONALDO might wonder what could have been if he steps out at the Etihad today. For a few crazy days in August, the Portuguese legend looked as though he could do the unthinkable and sign for Manchester City.

After it became clear they could not sign Harry Kane, Pep Guardiola toyed with the idea of a moving for Ronaldo instead.
United simply could not let that happen and made their dramatic move to take him ‘home’ to Old Trafford instead.
We will never know how different things could have been had the 37-year-old pushed for a move to the reigning champions instead.
But he knows from facing City back in November what a formidable team he almost joined.
And four months on, here the ‘noisy neighbours’ are chasing a treble – while United are facing an uphill battle just to reach the top four.
Of course, United could – in theory – win the Champions League this season and earn a return ticket for next season that way.

But few expect them to be anywhere near it – and Ronaldo could be forgiven for looking at what he missed out on.
The former Real Madrid ace has just one goal in the calendar year so far – and his place in the Red Devils starting XI has come under scrutiny.
Yet knowing him, you wouldn’t be surprised if he took centre stage by finding the net in the derby.
His team will undoubtedly start as second favourites against the current leaders.
Despite their defeat to Tottenham in their last home game, City have failed to win only two of their last 16 games in all competitions.
Yet those fans who make the short journey across town will not be completely without hope.
This is the third year in a row that these two old rivals have faced each other in the opening days of March – and the Reds have come out on top in the previous two.
They famously won 2-0 at Old Trafford on a rainy day shortly before the lockdown two years ago.
Then 12 months ago, they won by the same scoreline – bringing City’s 21-game winning streak to a halt in the process.

In fact the Etihad has been a happy hunting ground for United in recent years – with the Blues winning just one of their last seven home derbies.
If United can pull it off again on Sunday, the cheers will be just as loud down the M62 at Anfield as it would hand Jurgen Klopp’s men the initiative in the title race.
The scene is set for a tense afternoon in the North West.
