“Do they want to be mediocre for the next 10 years, is that what they want?!” The Super Sunday panel have a heated debate over Ralf Rangnick’s position and the managerial role at Manchester United 😳 pic.twitter.com/X7JrwYkGcM— Sky Sports Premier League (@SkySportsPL) March 6, 2022

United legend Neville and City hero Richards were at the Etihad on Sunday to watch Pep Guardiola’s side crush Ralf Rangnick’s 4-1.
And they were joined in the Sky Sports studio by Roy Keane and Jamie Redknapp for the heavyweight battle.
But there was more of a contest around the table afterwards than there was on the pitch.
Passionate Richards gesticulated wildly as he made his feelings clear while Neville had his head in his hands and told his colleague to ‘stop ranting’.
The five-minute debate was surrounding Rangnick, his appointment as United interim manager and what other options United have finding Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s permanent successor.
Neville said: “I can absolutely, categorically tell you Ralf Rangnick will not be the manager next season.

“Not because he’s doing a bad job – he’s just not being the manager next season.”
Richards replied: “So why give him the manager’s job in the first place?”
    Neville cut in: “Micah, Micah…”
But the ex-City defender continued: “It’s about the here and now – are you just getting rid of this season then? Is that what you’re doing?”
Neville added: “You’re ranting emotionally without really making sense. Chelsea have appointed interim managers until the end of the season, just to get them to the end of the season.”
As the decibels rose, Richards raged: “Just because you’re connected to Man United doesn’t mean my opinion’s irrelevant.
“Rangnick’s best work is done behind the scenes.
“You brought him in as interim, he’s not done great, he’s losing all credibility, he’s going upstairs – you think a new manager’s going to listen to him?”
Neville fired back: “Stop ranting, what should they have done?”
Do you want to be mediocre for the next ten years? Is that what you want?Micah Richards
Then Richards suggested the now Tottenham boss: “Gone for Conte! Conte was available when he went to Spurs!
“He was the best available manager at the time. And because he doesn’t fit the ‘Man United way’?
“The Man United way is you don’t win any trophies! Conte’s done it!”
Neville insisted United were not keen on Conte, but Richards was having none of it.
He added: “Why would you not want Conte? You don’t want winners now? Is that where Man United are? You don’t want winners anymore?”
Neville replied: “I agree with them not wanting him. Conte’s not a manager for Man United.
“He comes in for one or two years, does a great job, no problem…”
Richards cut in to ask: “Do you want to be mediocre for the next ten years? Is that what you want?”
Neville finished up by saying: “They wanted to appoint [Mauricio’ Pochettino or [Erik] Ten Hag on a long-term project and they needed someone to get them until the end of the season.
“Manchester United need a longer-term approach to a manager.”

Rangnick suggested he was still keen to take the gig permanently after his temporary spell at the end of the season.
But after the humiliating defeat to their neighbours, with Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez scoring twice each, few Red Devils supporters would want him in the dugout next season.

Gary Lineker takes cheeky dig at Sky Sports over coverage of Man City’s demolition of Man Utd

GARY LINEKER took a cheeky dig at Sky Sports’ post-match coverage of Manchester City’s demolition of their rivals Manchester United. The defending Premier League champions beat the Red Devils 4-1 at the Etihad to extend their lead at the top of the table.

And The Match of the Day presenter was watching Roy Keane, Jamie Redknapp and Micah Richards’ analysis of the game – which was mainly focussed around Man Utd’s woes instead of Man City’s brilliance.
The England legend joked on Twitter: “Controversial, but I think Man City is worthy of a mention.”
Many fans agreed with Lineker’s light-hearted assessment of Sky’s coverage.
One said of Man City: “The best club in the world.”
Another said: “City are currently a well run club at the top of their game like Liverpool.”
Man Utd’s hopes of a top-four finish are in doubt as Arsenal leapfrogged them in the table with a 3-2 win over relegation strugglers Watford.

The Gunners hold a one-point advantage over United AND they have three games in hand.
United’s lack of fight left legend Keane seething.
Keane said: “The worst thing you can say about Man Utd is that they gave up, in any game to give up is unforgivable really.
“The beauty with top level sports is that there is no hiding place, I know United have come here in the last couple years and done well but we saw all of United’s shortcomings today.
“There’s ways to lose football matches, we’ve all lost football matches but the way United lost today – they stopped running, they gave up, players not running back, that’s what I don’t understand.”
Midfielder Scott McTominay expressed his disappointment to the comments of some of United’s legends.
In his post-match interview, the Scotland international said: “From my point of view, on the pitch, it’s hard to see what’s going on around you but if that’s what people are saying then so be it.
“They’re all entitled to their own opinion but, for myself, it’s incredibly disappointing if people think that.
“I’ll have to watch it back and see body language and things like that but, for myself, it hurts.
“If you give a team like that all the time in the world in the second half, you’re gonna get punished. It’s as simple as that.”

Ralf Rangnick insists his Man Utd flops did not give up vs Man City… there is just a HUGE gap between the sides

RALF RANGNICK insists his Manchester United flops did NOT throw in the towel against Manchester City. But he admits there is a huge gap between his side and the champions after Sunday’s dismal derby defeat.

Two goals apiece from Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez saw City cruise to a 4-1 win at the Etihad.
United – missing Cristiano Ronaldo – put up a decent showing in the first half, scoring a great goal through Jadon Sancho.
But they failed to turn up after the break, letting City run riot in what Roy Keane called a ‘shameful’ performance.
Indeed, the stats show United made just 16 passes in the last 10 minutes of the game – while City recorded 120.
And ex-Red Devil Keane was joined by Gary Neville in condemning the ‘egos’ in Rangnick’s dressing room.
However, the German tactician insists his players did NOT give up at the Etihad.

Rangnick believes United’s flops actually tried hard to keep up with City’s blistering tempo.
But they were only made to look poor due to the gulf in quality between the two sides.
Rangnick explained: “To be honest, I didn’t have the impression that they didn’t try.
“But it’s difficult against a team like Man City, once you are 3-1 down against the best team in possession of the ball on the planet, it’s difficult.
“I cannot blame anyone for not having tried and put effort into that game, but it was difficult after the third goal.
“After 28 games you’re as far apart from each team as the table shows (22 points).
“The second half showed that if they are in their momentum and if they are 3-1 up then it is almost impossible to keep them away from your own goal.
“Look, I am still the manager for another 10 games in the Premier League and for hopefully a few more games in the Champions League and it doesn’t make sense now to start some speculations about how many players would we need, on which positions would we need them.
“This is not my issue. Right now it’s about preparing the team for the Tottenham game and after that for a very important game against Atletico in the Champions League.

“Right now, we have to be – and I am – happy with the players that we have. This is clear. We lost two, if not three strikers since Christmas, everybody knows (that).
“Again, this is a fact and we have to deal with it. I am not complaining about that so for us it’s important to look ahead and make sure we develop the team, we have in the last couple of weeks and months.
“We do not always play against Manchester City. We have other teams and we showed that against West Ham and against other teams, like Leeds, that we are capable to win those games and this is my major job in the next two-and-a-half months.” More

Cristiano Ronaldo complained of injury and flew to Portugal AFTER hearing he was benched for Man Utd’s derby vs Man City

Rangnick said he wanted fresh legs for the match and that he believed Ronaldo could make an impact from the bench.
But the United legend insisted he could do that from the start and was furious at being axed.
It is believed he hopes to help his injury with warm weather in his homeland.
SunSport understands his team-mates were surprised he did not stay at the team hotel on Saturday night.
The 37-year-old had been feeling positive in training last week and was looking forward to the Etihad clash with City.
But United interim-boss Rangnick was told by the club’s medical department on Friday that Ronaldo had a hip flexor injury.

After yesterday’s 4-1 humiliation, Rangnick insisted: “I have to believe my medical department.
“Our doctor came to see me Friday morning before training and said Cristiano could not train because of some problems with his hip flexor and the same Saturday.”
Striker Edinson Cavani was also missing after apparently not feeling well enough to play after his recent groin problem.
Asked when they would return, Rangnick said: “I don’t know. I was hoping to have them available for this game.
“We have two important games coming up against Spurs and Atletico and we have to focus on that.”
Rumours began to swirl on social media on Saturday night that Ronaldo had pulled out of the squad.
The Instagram account that started the rumour is cr7.0_lendario — which is followed by Ronaldo.
A post claimed: “Manchester United’s manager wants to enter with a different strategy in tomorrow’s game and has chosen to defend himself more, a purely tactical choice. Ronaldo won’t even be on the bench.”
The post was liked by Ron’s sister, Katia Aveiro.

Former United captain Roy Keane added fuel to the fire pre-match, saying: “I don’t like it when the manager talks about this ‘hip flexor’. I don’t get it.

When contacted by SunSport, Ronaldo’s representatives insisted it was an injury keeping him out. More

Gary Neville says Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag don’t have the ‘personality’ to cope with pressure of Man Utd job

But Red Devils legend Neville reckons neither will be able to handle sitting in football’s hottest seat.
Paris Saint-Germain boss Pochettino is understood to be the players’ choice to take charge.
He spent five-and-a-half years managing Premier League rivals Tottenham.
And Poch is now on course to reclaim PSG’s French title, while also challenging for Champions League honours.
Meanwhile, Ten Hag has impressed at Ajax, implementing a bold attacking style to put them on course for a potential Treble.
On paper, both men look like they could fare well at United, who crumbled to a tragic 4-1 derby defeat at Man City on Sunday.

Rangnick was outfoxed on and off the field by Pep Guardiola as he saw United’s top four hopes slide away.
But Neville believes Pochettino and Ten Hag would also struggle to cope with the pressures that come at United.
That’s because neither man has the strong-willed personality that Neville feels is needed for the Theatre of Dreams.
Neville said: “If you look at Pochettino and Ten Hag who are the two that keep getting mentioned.
“Pochettino we don’t even know if they can get from Paris Saint-Germain. Have they got the personality to come in to Manchester United?
“The scale of the club, the issues that exist there at this moment in time – are they able to have the personality and character and the strategic planning of how to manage up and down?
“To influence up, to take over the planning of the training ground, to redevelop the stadium, all the stuff you think a great manager would do.
“I’m not sure Pochettino and ten Hag have got that in them.”

Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez both scored twice in the dismal drubbing.
But Keane also had problems in the studio to contend with.
That’s because fellow pundit Richards, a former City player, could not stop laughing at the result.
Indeed, the ex-England right-back continually cracked up as Keane showed his displeasure at United’s performance.
And it led to fans joking online that the Irishman was ‘ready to knock Richards out’.
One quipped: “Roy Keane looks ready to knock out Micah Richards’.

Another laughed: “Micah Richards exploding after that Roy Keane rant was incredible.”
One decreed: “Richards trying to hold his laugh in is the ultimate p**s take.”
Another noted: “Keane is going ton have a scrap with Richards if he laughs one more time.”
One added: “Keane is about to set about Richards in that studio!”
Richards’ giggle came after an explosive rant from Keane aimed at United’s lacklustre showing.

He said: “There was players there and we’re watching it live, and I’m looking at them getting really frustrated watching it.
“I forgive mistakes, but you’ve got to run back. There’s players, five or six players should never play for United again. Just shameful.
“Shameful that you can’t run back and you can’t put your body on the line.
“I forgive the lack of quality against Man City in the second half because Man City are excellent, they’ve been excellent for the last three, four five years they’re a fantastic team. That’s why they’re the champions.
“But Man Utd in a derby match today? The subs coming on, you’re hoping they’ll have an impact. They’re not prepared to run around.

“A couple of the lads in midfield, Wan-Bissaka, Fred, Maguire, Rashford when he came on… I could go on.
“Give up four goals, Man City weren’t even at their very best, City didn’t have to be at their best. I think City had another couple of gears to go. I think they just toyed with them a bit like the game at Old Trafford.
“The old saying men vs boys. They gave up. Shame on them.
“Who’s running that dressing room? These guys seem more bothered about, ‘How am I looking? How’s my hair looking? Are my boots nice?’
“You leave your ego at the door when you play for Man Utd.

“I’m looking at the United fans and they’re not daft. They’re watching their team and seeing they’re not fighting. There are no excuses.

Man Utd made just SIXTEEN passes in last 10 minutes of derby defeat as damning stats show flops completely downed tools

MANCHESTER UNITED legend Roy Keane didn’t hold back after his old team were embarrassed at the hands of bitter rivals Manchester City. Two goals apiece from Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez condemned the Red Devils to a miserable 4-1 defeat.

After the game Keane raged at Ralf Rangnick’s players for ‘giving up’ – a theory that is well reflected in the stats from the game.
In the final 10 minutes of the match Manchester United completed just SIXTEEN passes, while supposedly chasing the game.
To make matters worse one of those was from kick-off to get the clash restarted following City’s fourth goal of the demolition.
By comparison Rodri completed 17 passes in the same amount of time, more than the entire United team combined.
Put together the men in blue strung 120 successful passes together in the final 10 minutes of the game, a whopping 104 more than United’s meagre total.
The home side also had six shots in the final 10 minutes as Pep Guardiola’s side hunted for more goals, a mindset that was rewarded when Mahrez made it four in the last minute.

United on the other hand failed to register an effort of any kind in the second half – only the second time they’ve done so in the last SIX seasons.
There was also a 15 minute period late into the game when United had EIGHT percent of possession as they were pounded into submission by an irresistible City showing.
The possession stats for the entire game make for slightly better reading, 31 percent for United across the 90 minutes, although that’s still far from enjoying large spells on the ball.
Keane couldn’t quite believe what had played out in front of him as he embarked on a scathing rant in the Sky Sports studio at full time.
He wasn’t afraid to make his feelings shown, labelling United’s performance on the day as ‘shameful’.
The United legend seethed: “There was players there and we’re watching it live, and I’m looking at them getting really frustrated watching it.
“I forgive mistakes, but you’ve got to run back. There’s players, five or six players should never play for United again. Just shameful.
“Shameful that you can’t run back and you can’t put your body on the line.
Keane claimed ‘five or six’ United players shouldn’t play for the club again
“I forgive the lack of quality against Man City in the second half because Man City are excellent, they’ve been excellent for the last three, four five years they’re a fantastic team. That’s why they’re the champions.
“But Man Utd in a derby match today? The subs coming on, you’re hoping they’ll have an impact. They’re not prepared to run around.”
Keane went on to call a number of United’s stars out by name after being given the run-around at the Etihad.
He continued: “A couple of the lads in midfield, Wan-Bissaka, Fred, Maguire, Rashford when he came on… I could go on.
“Give up four goals, Man City weren’t even at their very best, City didn’t have to be at their best. I think City had another couple of gears to go. I think they just toyed with them a bit like the game at Old Trafford.

Man Utd player ratings: Jadon Sancho impresses against his old team but Harry Maguire struggles in crunch derby

MANCHESTER UNITED’S run of three consecutive wins at the Etihad ended in miserable fashion at the hands of cross-town rivals Manchester City. The Red Devils were toothless in attack without talisman Cristiano Ronaldo and weren’t much better in defence either as they slumped to a 4-1 defeat.

Jadon Sancho gave Ralf Rangnick’s side hope when he cancelled out Kevin De Bruyne’s opener with a lovely curling strike.
But the visitors were outplayed in every area of the pitch and were utterly dominated by the league leaders.
The loss leaves the Red Devils a point off fourth-placed Arsenal, but having played THREE games more.
Here’s how SunSport’s Giacomo Pisa rated and slated Rangnick’s men in the demoralising defeat.
    David De Gea – 5
Beaten by De Bruyne from close range for the opener, and again for the second, but there wasn’t much he could have done about both.
Initially denied Foden before the Belgian slammed home the second, but the ball just fell to someone in the wrong colour shirt.
Brilliant save to deny Riyad Mahrez at 2-1, but couldn’t do the same when the same player scored from range to make it three.
And the less said about the fourth the better as Mahrez’s effort came off De Gea’s face en route to the back of the net.

    Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 4
Didn’t stop the cross for the first goal which set the tone for the remainder of the game.
A day to forget for the right-back, who was often caught napping high up the pitch as City focused the majority of their play on his side of the park.
Bullied off the ball by the much smaller Phil Foden on the edge of the box but luckily for him the Man City man fired wide.
    Victor Lindelof – 4
Drawn out of position for De Bruyne’s opener in what was a nightmare day at the office for the United defender.
Was then caught out for the second when Phil Foden flicked it over his head, but instead of getting back into the box he was left ball-watching as De Bruyne ghosted in to score again.
    Harry Maguire – 4
The skipper’s frustration was summed up when he went into the book just after the hour mark for a cynical lunge on De Bruyne.
He struggled throughout, failing to recognise the danger of De Bruyne in the box for City’s first, and then didn’t clear United’s lines for the second.
His misery was compounded when Mahrez’s shot from range took a deflection off him, wrong-footing De Gea completely and sneaking into the back of the net.
Maguire looked to the sky at full time after his side were outplayedCredit: Reuters
    Alex Telles – 4
Caught on his heels for the first goal, not recognising De Bruyne on his own in the six yard box.
Tried to get across to make the block but by the time he got there it was too late.
City’s focus down Wan-Bissaka’s side left Telles off the hook for most of the game, but it was still a far from convincing performance.
Tried and failed to play Mahrez offside for the fourth instead of tracking his run, in a miserable end to the day for the Red Devils.
    Fred – 4
Fred has enjoyed somewhat of a revival in recent weeks, although that can’t be said for today’s performance.
The midfielder was left chasing shadows in the middle of the park throughout the game.
    Scott McTominay – 5
Like Fred he was out of his depth against the likes of Rodri and Bernardo Silva in midfield, and struggled to get near either of them throughout the game.
Tried to bring the ball forward through the middle a couple of times but was suffocated by a scrum of hardworking City bodies every time he tried to do so.
    Jadon Sancho – 6
A livewire whenever he picked up the ball, although with City’s incessant possession that wasn’t very often.
Cut inside from the left and curled delightfully into the corner to get United back on level terms.
He should have made it 2-2 after being teed up by Fernandes but blazed over from close range, although was still United’s best player on the day.
Sancho was a bright spark in a drubbing at the EtihadCredit: Getty
    Paul Pogba – 5
Played in a more advanced role in the absence of Ronaldo and played a delicious pass into Sancho for Man Utd’s first goal.
But apart from that he was largely a passenger throughout the game, and for spells it was easy to forget he was on the pitch at all.
Although in Pogba’s defence playing up front in a 4-2-2-2 is far from his natural position.
    Anthony Elanga – 4
Not able to showcase his talent after being largely restricted to tracking the marauding Joao Cancelo.
Also at fault for the second goal when trying to play out from the back instead of clearing his lines, playing his team into trouble as De Bruyne slammed home from close range.
Subbed off just after the hour mark after effectively spending the majority of the game playing right-back.
    Bruno Fernandes – 4
Tasked with leading the line alongside Pogba in Ronaldo’s absence, but it was evident he wasn’t comfortable doing so.
Playing up front restricted his ability to drop deep and pick up the ball, and despite playing further back after Marcus Rashford was introduced, it was too little too late.

    SUBS
Jesse Lingard (on for Elanga, 64 mins) – 4
Didn’t get a sniff after coming on, and may have been left wishing he’d stayed on the bench.
