Liverpool line up £10m transfer for new Colombia wonderkid Jhon Duran, 18, from MLS but face competition from Chelsea

Duran plays on the right but is tipped to move into the middle later in his career and he has the pace and trickery that fit the Anfield model.
Liverpool already have the teenager’s compatriot Luis Diaz on the left side and Duran could be moved for quickly because of growing interest in him.
Duran only came into the Chicago side this season and clubs in Spain and Germany are on his trail.
His fee would not scare any of his admirers and may be around £10million plus extras.

Fire recently sold keeper Gabriel Slonina, also 18, to Chelsea for a similar price and would expect the same for their next discovery.
Todd Boehly’s Blues spies are among those checking on Duran and with so many American owners in the Premier League, the Chicago cub is a name being discussed in high places.
There would be no work permit issues either as Duran is now a full cap under new coach Nestor Lorenzo, having made his debut against Guatemala last week.
His compatriot Diaz was in action as Liverpool drew 3-3 with Brighton on Saturday afternoon.

Gareth Bale at centre of club vs country battle with Wales reluctant for captain to play full MLS role before World Cup

GARETH BALE is at the centre of a fitness battle between club and country ahead of the World Cup.The Los Angeles FC forward, 33, completed his first 90 minutes in just over a year in Wales’ 1-0 Nations League loss to Poland on Sunday – which relegated them to League B.

Bale’s club side want him raring to go in next month’s MLS play-offs but the Dragons are keen for their captain to be in peak condition for Qatar a month later.
Wales boss Robert Page says talks will be held in a bid to manage his talisman before the Group B opener against USA on November 21.
Page said: “There will be communication between both (Wales and LAFC). They want Gareth available for them and we want him in the best physical position we can for the first game against the USA.
“We will be in contact with them to make sure he is in the right place. He has gone from not playing that many minutes to 30 on Thursday to 90 minutes.

“We wouldn’t normally do that. Would I have wanted him to play 90 minutes? Probably not. But he is Gareth Bale and because of the importance of the game, we wanted to win it.
“And if you get a free-kick in the 92nd minute there is potential he could put it in the top corner so you are always going to want to keep him on the pitch.
“What he does from now until the first game against USA, we will be in contact with the club and help manage those minutes.
“LA are a good outfit, they will know exactly how to get him from where he is at this moment in time to full fitness which is 90 minutes week in week out.”

Over the next seven weeks before Wales make their first World Cup appearance since 1958, Page must also decide where to play Bale to get the best out of the 108-cap star.
Page has alternative forward options in 6ft5 handful Kieffer Moore, who scored in a 2-1 defeat to Belgium last Thursday, while Brennan Johnson and Dan James add lightning pace to the attack.
Wales ended the Poland loss in Cardiff with all four attackers on the pitch as Bale moved deeper into a playmaker role and the scenario could pose the Dragons chief a selection headache in Qatar.
When asked if Bale could play off Moore rather than in a wide position, Page added: “Yeah, potentially.
“There was an argument to start Kieffer but when we looked at their weaknesses we thought pace could hurt them with the way Brennan has been playing and Dan James.
“Bringing Kieffer on gave us that option to play off the front. We could find Kieffer then set Gareth to play in behind.

“To do that we had to change to a back four, which we have done time and time again and we had a lot of success two years ago. It was good we could adapt to that and it got our four best forward players on the pitch.
“Potentially I think Gareth likes that position as a ten and it suits us with Brennan’s pace and athleticism outside him on the right.” More

But the match was overshadowed by a 59th minute incident between DC’s Taxiarchis Fountas and Inter’s Damion Lowe.
A heated clash between the pair saw referee Ismail Elfath end up in discussion with both team captains, as well as United legends Rooney and Neville.
A delay of several minutes then saw Fountas hauled off by Wazza.
And Miami star DeAndre Yedlin later accused DC’s Fountas of calling Lowe “the N-word.”

The visitors then refused to play until “something was done with that player”.
Yedlin said: “Damion and another player got into a bit of a scuffle – as Damion walks away, one of their guys called him the N-word.”
Inter boss Neville has now hailed Rooney for taking action, saying: “There was a racist comment that was unacceptable. A word was used that I think is unacceptable in society.
“I think it’s the worst word in the world. There is no place at all for racism on a football field or society.

“I must commend my players for keeping their calm, I must commend the referee – [in] a really difficult situation he followed the protocols set out by the MLS – and I must give massive, massive respect to Wayne Rooney for dealing with it in the way that he did.
“I have always known him as a class act and today he went up in my estimation more than he has ever done, more than any goal he has ever scored.”
Rooney himself confirmed an incident, adding: “There was a complaint, which I’m sure will get investigated. Not much more I can say.”
Meanwhile, a statement from the MLS said: “MLS has zero tolerance for abusive and offensive language and we take these allegations very seriously.
“An investigation into this matter will begin promptly. Further information will be provided upon completion of that investigation.”

And a DC United statement added: “DC United are aware of the allegations involving a player during the match against Inter Miami CF.

The score was 2-2 during stoppage time with Christian Benteke breaking the deadlock for the hosts, Leonardo Campana responding with a brace for the visitors and Taxiarchis Fountas equalising.
But it was during stoppage time when Neville delivered a devastating blow to his ex-team-mate.
Former Tottenham, Sunderland and Newcastle ace DeAndre Yedlin delivered a low cross into the box from the right wing.
Yedlin’s pass was met by the incoming Gonzalo Higuain, who fired the ball to the back of the net in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

Wayne Rooney and Phil Neville set for ‘weird’ MLS showdown… and Roo could get old Man Utd pal the sack if DC United win

PHIL NEVILLE always knew Wayne Rooney was management material. The two former Manchester United team-mates face off in the USA on Sunday when Nev’s Inter Miami travel to face Rooney’s DC United in a crunch clash.

Miami badly need a win to keep alive their play-off hopes and Neville in a job with his deal running out at the end of the season.
The former Everton captain reckons it will be “weird” to go up against his old mate on the touchline — even if it has been on the cards for years.
Neville, 45, told SunSport: “It’s always difficult when you’re a player to envisage who’s going to go into management and who’s not.
“But as the years got further on, I felt my pathway was always to go into coaching.

“And as you saw Wayne develop into an incredible leader, you saw that leadership would eventually make him stay in coaching.
“He loves football, you see the players that love football, that football is their life, that they have an obsession with football. Wayne was that person.
“And then as you get older, you start seeing different qualities in terms of the way that they speak in the dressing room, the way that they help the younger players.
“He had all those qualities, and now he will be using them in management. I saw the other day, he played a 15-year-old.

“People say ‘oh, wow, that’s young’.
“But remember that Wayne was a similar age when he broke into his team. So for him, that’s normal.
“And if I was a young kid in DC, I would be incredibly excited to see a manager that gives opportunities to younger players.”
Rooney, 36, returned to the American capital earlier this year with DC rock bottom of the Eastern Conference — and they remain there even if the England legend’s arrival has boosted morale.
They are already planning for next season following a nightmare campaign but Neville reckons Rooney’s tough apprenticeship at crisis-torn Derby will stand him in excellent stead.
Neville, who led his inconsistent side to a crucial 2-1 win over Columbus in midweek, added: “I think the impressive thing with his management is he has put the hard yards in, he has done all these badges.
“And he hasn’t taken the easy route. Look at the job he had at Derby.

“That was really, really tough but would have been an incredible learning experience that he will be putting into good use at DC, who have had a real difficult season.
“He’ll have time to build his own roster. But it will be weird to come up against him, because we were team-mates for so long and good team-mates, too.
“It will be really good to have someone in the opposite dugout with an English voice. It’s always nice to hear when you live abroad.”
Neville loves life in south Florida and is desperate to extend his stay in MLS but remains worried about his contract situation.
Getting into the play-offs should secure his future but, with David Beckham’s ownership group desperate for success, they are not making any snap decisions.
Nev knows the pressure is on, especially with most of his backroom staff also out of contract.
He admitted: “I think everyone has got trust and belief in each other. We have a long-term plan.
“I know I’m in a results business, in terms of performances, results, points, qualifying for playoffs. I trust the players that we brought in, I trust the process and our own abilities to deliver.
“The clock is ticking. And it’s got to the point now where there’s probably no slack, there’s no recovery time.”
The top seven teams in both the Eastern and Western Conferences qualify for the end-of-season shootout.
Miami are eighth, two points adrift of seventh-placed Columbus with just four games left.
After the trip to Washington, they go to lowly Toronto and finish with home games against high-flying Orlando and Montreal.
But with on-loan Wolves striker Leonardo Campana returning to fitness at just the right time, Neville remains upbeat.
He added: “Now it’s delivery time but we would have taken this position at the start of the season. There’s great belief in the squad. And I’ve got incredible belief and trust in this group of players.”

Gareth Bale a doubt for Wales’ Nations League clash against Belgium with star struggling with MLS schedule and jet lag

GARETH BALE is a doubt for Wales’ Nations League clash in Belgium next week. The Dragons captain, 33, will turn out for MLS side LAFC against Houston Dynamo in the early hours of Monday morning.
Gareth Bale could miss the Belgium clash due to jet lag and fatigue
Then Bale is to take a 10½-hour flight to London from Los Angeles on Tuesday, just two days before the Brussels tussle.
But with time zones, jet lag and fatigue all factors, Wales boss Robert Page will not take any risks with him ahead of the World Cup.
Page said: “We know he’ll be affected. There will be a lot of planning as regards to if he is going to be ready for the game against Belgium. If not, we might have to leave it for the Poland game.
“We want him in top condition. We are not going to jeopardise him.”

Wales host Poland three days later on September 25 but could already be confined to last place in League A Group 4 if they lose to Belgium and Poland get at least a point against the Netherlands.
And Page will need all the firepower he can get as Wales have picked up just one win in their last six games – the crucial World Cup play-off qualifier against Ukraine.
Bale has been out of sorts since his move to MLS too, scoring just two goals in 11 games in all competitions.
In fact, LAFC have performed better when the Welshman has not been on the pitch.

MLS reporter Matthew Doyle revealed LAFC have a goal difference of -7 with the five-time Champions League winner on the pitch in the 375 minutes he has played.
But when Bale is either subbed off or absent, LAFC are plus 33 in the goals department in 2,800 minutes.
However, Bale has sold the most shirts, edging out fellow former Premier League stars Carlos Vela and Chicharito.
And luckily for LAFC, Bale’s poor form hasn’t loosened their firm grip on top spot in the Western Conference.
This is the first time Bale will make the 5,500-mile trip from California to Cardiff for international duty since his summer switch Stateside.
But Page trusts 106-cap Bale to deliver because of his classy double against Austria and free-kick winner over Ukraine in March and June which took Wales to November’s World Cup came at a time when he had limited action in Spain.
Page added: “Of course, in an ideal world we want him to play more minutes, but I’m not overly concerned. He has proven it time and time again for us. If he hadn’t then I’d be worried.
“As long as he keeps putting free-kicks in the top corner then there is no problem. He turned up with the right frame of mind against Austria and Ukraine and scored the goals he did. You don’t do that unless you have mental toughness.
“But if he plays 10 minutes it is more than what he was playing before he scored those important goals for us. So everything he plays is a bonus.
“He looks after himself, he’s the ultimate professional in every camp. Whatever minutes he plays I know when he comes on camp he will be ready to play for us.” More

But Higuain proved his class by opening the scoring 25 minutes into the 8pm Tuesday night kick-off, coolly slotting home on the counter.
However, Cucho Hernandez – formerly of Watford – equalised for Columbus with a back-post header four minutes before half-time.
