I showered with David Beckham on England duty but thought ex-boss was weird – now I’m making my own way in coaching

FORMER defender David Wheater has started falling in love with football again — in a completely  different way — after quitting as a player last year.He and another former player,  Stuart Wise, have set up their own youth W2 Football Academy, which runs twice a week at Redcar College and Stokesley Sports Club.David Wheater says he’s rediscovered his love of footballCredit: GettyThat’s through coaching kids aged between five and 11It offers coaching for kids aged five to 11 and has proved to be a huge hit, having started only six months ago.Towering 6ft 5in former centre-back Wheater, 37, said: “Last year at   Darlington, I just couldn’t stay fit.“The physio was delighted when I was back training, then I’d go and warm up and pull up injured again.“I had to be honest with myself at the end of the season.READ MORE ON FOOTBALL“I went and saw the manager and told him that my body was basically telling me to stop.“I used to think I’d play until I was 40.“Then I hit 30 and everything started hurting. It was my dream to play professional football and I realised that ambition.“Ultimately, I hope I can make some of their dreams come true too.”Wheater joined up with Wise after their sons trained for Stokesley under-7s. Wise, 39, played for York City but a serious knee injury brought his career to a premature end.Wheater added: “It has been great working with Stuart and we share the same love of the game and working with the youngsters.“We just got roped in to take over and it snowballed from there.”Now more than 100 kids attend for three hours on a Wednesday evening, with extra sessions on the cards. I used to bully Arsenal and made famous dig at Wenger’s team – they always fell apart but this group have cojones

I PLAYED against several Arsenal players who would  easily have been good enough to get into Mikel Arteta’s  current Gunners side.At their peak, Jack Wilshere, Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang were all world-class players.Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil summed up the individual brilliance of Arsenal several years ago, but the current team is more resilientCredit: REUTERS/Eddie KeoghThe Gunners have superb collective strength, laced with special talents like Declan Rice and playmaker Martin OdegaardCredit: GettyTroy Deeney had a reputation for bullying ArsenalCredit: ReutersBut those were Arsenal teams you always fancied your chances against.Arsenal teams you could bully. Arsenal teams who could fall apart. It’s well remembered that I once accused Arsene Wenger’s team of lacking ‘cojones’ after my Watford side beat them at Vicarage Road.I certainly cannot imagine taking the p*** out of this Gunners team in the same way. I wouldn’t rate my chances of bullying them, either.Arteta was a serious competitor as a player and his team are the embodiment of how he used to play, not that some of his old team-mates shared the same level of desire. It’s great testament to Arteta that he has created an Arsenal team far superior in spirit and solidarity to the sides he played in, who were technically better in many areas. This is a team who have won seven straight league games, scoring 31 times and conceding just three. They have scored more goals than any other Prem team  this season. That’s not bad for a club which everyone — including me — was  saying needed to sign an out-and-out centre-forward during the January transfer window. Most read in FootballIvan Toney, who lines up against them at the Emirates this  evening, was one man touted as the missing link for Arsenal to go on and win the title this season.I still think Arsenal could do with a proper No 9 and  will go out and get one in the summer. Arsenal’s most glamorous supporters including World Cup super-fan and Kim KardashianHowever well they’ve played recently — and the way they dismantled Sheffield United to go 5-0 up at half-time on Monday night was awesome — I still reckon they will finish a close third behind Manchester City and Liverpool. At centre-forward and at full-back, Arsenal are still not at elite level, although the return to fitness of left-back Jurrien Timber will help. This is, though, an Arsenal side which can win matches in all sorts of ways.Against the Blades — admittedly one of the worst Premier League teams of all time — they simply played the opposition off the park. But Arsenal also have an outstanding record from set-pieces. They are a big, strong side with a psychology to match their physicality.Rice, Rice babyAnd midfielder Declan Rice has proved himself as his club’s best signing for at least a decade — even at £105million he is a bargain.I’m a huge fan of Rice as a player and as a bloke. When I played against him, he had this child-like innocence, where he’d be giving the impression of, ‘Wow, playing Premier League football is actually my job. How good is that?’. He still looks as if he is thoroughly enjoying himself in every match but that sense of joy is matched by an uncommon drive for self-improvement.Dec is not content with being a very good player, he wants to be a genuine great — and since moving to Arsenal, he is arriving at that level. There aren’t many big-money  signings who have hit the ground running in the Prem in the way Dec has done — but somehow you always expected that he would. He’s only recently turned 25 but he is a leader  and he has the absolute trust of Arteta and his team-mates.Taking set-pieces is a great responsibility and, however good your  tactics are at free-kicks and corners, you’re only as good as the man delivering them — and Dec is top-drawer.For a man who is primarily a  defensive-minded midfielder to have  contributed five goals and six assists this season is a seriously good return. There are so many Arsenal players chipping in with goals — there were five different scorers at Bramall Lane the other night, just as there were when they won at West Ham by the same scoreline last month.Nine different Gunners players have scored four-plus goals in the league. But maybe it’s the old forward in me which keeps thinking they need an authentic No 9 if they are to  continue challenging. You can win a title without one,  as City have done. But Arsenal are now up against Erling Haaland, who has scored 80 goals for City in  18 months at the club, and Liverpool, for whom Mo Salah has netted at least 30 times in four different campaigns.READ MORE SUN STORIESThat is what Arteta is still lacking — however crazy that sounds after such a prolific run of scoring. And Toney is such a confident bloke, I wouldn’t be surprised if he showed Arsenal what they are  missing tonight.Declan Rice is among the leaders in the groupCredit: GettyMesut Ozil with Arsene WengerCredit: AFP or licensorsMikel Arteta is a serious competitor as a boss, just like as a playerCredit: Getty More

How Anthony Joshua changed his training and nutrition to become an ‘endurance athlete’ and now cuts a leaner figure

WHEN Anthony Joshua took to the scales for the weigh-in against Francis Ngannou, he cut a svelter figure.Weighing 18 stone on the nose, he appeared every inch the lean, mean boxing machine.Anthony Joshua nows cut a leaner figureCredit: Instagram @anthonyjoshuaHard work in the gym as well as a strict diet have helped AJ achieve peak fitnessCredit: https://www.instagram.com/anthonyjoshua/AJ has seemingly found his fighting weight at around the 18 stone markCredit: Instagram @ anthonyjoshuaIn fact for his previous fight against Otto Wallin, he was just one pound shy of his current weight. Seemingly, he has found his fighting weight as he aims for another accomplished performance.Last year, AJ revealed he had changed the way he approached his diet and nutritional needs. He runs longer distances instead of shorter, more explosive sprints, to become more of an endurance athlete. The former heavyweight champion also spaces out his rest days and sticks to a tight regime.Read more Anthony Joshua newsWhat changedWhen he first started his pro career, he admitted he concentrated on sprinting as part of his schedule in a magazine interview done after he defeated Jermaine Franklin.100 metres and 200 metres sprints helped with his explosiveness, before graduating to 400 metres.AJ realised most fighters have that ability to erupt quick. He needed to run longer distances to become more of an endurance boxer.”When I first started out, you start off [with] 400 metres, and that’s like your 12 rounds. You start running 100 metres and you progress to 200 metres. So 100 metres, it’s powerful and explosive,” he said. Most read in Boxing”And then when we progress, I started realising, everyone’s explosive but everyone’s got endurance as well. I was like s***, I need to be explosive but I need to have endurance.Ultimate boxing rich list including Anthony Joshua, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Deontay Wilder”So I went through this massive phase of trying to figure out what’s right, what’s wrong. And I’m at a stage now where people want me to be explosive.”But, I’ve realised I would rather be able to complete the 400 metres, and still come first. I’ve now changed my training to be more of a long endurance athlete, rather than just be explosive for 200 metres and then crash.”Periodised trainingIn the interview with Men’s Health, AJ continued: “I like low rep ranges, but it’s all about phase training. So, I usually just try and do everything. I’ll be in a strength session. I’m doing jumps, I’m doing heavy weights.Longer distance running instead of sprints have helped AJ with his enduranceCredit: @anthonyjoshuaHeavy weight training is still an essential part of AJ’s tough regimeCredit: INSTAGRAM @ anthonyjoshuaAJ now prefers to periodise his training scheduleCredit: InstagramCycling is another exercise AJ uses to aid his staminaCredit: Instagram / @anthonyjoshuaread more sport features”I’m doing a bit of core and I’m running, so I’m not really specialising in anything. I’m getting a good workout, but certain trainers want to get bang for their buck.”They don’t have you for a long time. So what I’ve learned is to periodise my training. Like, ‘let’s get the most out of this three week or two week block and move on’, rather than, ‘let’s just get the most out of this session’.”Where do I want to be in two weeks? Or three weeks? But then I can measure my progression.”Eating rightPreviously, it was reported AJ consumed a whopping 5,000 calories a day. With the help of nutritionist Mark Ellison, who also works with Manchester United and the Olympic GB team, he consumes a varied diet.Sometimes, during a training camp, he will go vegan wanting “just fresh” food instead of meat and fish.”Food like avocado, falafel, some veg, some rice,” Joshua revealed in the build-up to his fight with Joseph Parker. For breakfast, AJ is said to indulge in porridge, eggs, fruit, and yoghurts.”Then we go on to jacket potatoes, tuna, mayo, beetroot with a handful of veg,” he has said in the past.Eating a fresh diet is important for AJ as he fuels his bodyCredit: Instagram @anthonyjoshuaAJ doesn’t always indulge in meat when he’s in a training campNutritionist Mark Ellison works with AJ on his dietary requirementsCredit: Instagram @ellinutrition”In the evening, I’ll take some chicken, rice with mashed potato with a lot of veg as well. I make sure I’ve got a lot of water and in between sessions I’ll have my protein shakes.”Taking it more seriouslyAJ now knows how to full his body properly and is taking nutrition seriously.”I just didn’t take it as serious as I do now, nutrition is so important. I used to be in the gym after a session and we would chill out for maybe two more hours.”But if you look at the time when I started training, the minute I finish, [so when] I hit my last punch, I haven’t eaten all that time and I’m staying in the gym for another two hours after I’ve showered and had a chat with everyone. Probably about five hours that I’ve had no food. I used to lose a lot of weight.”That’s another thing, I used to associate losing weight with getting fit. So I used to cut out the benefits of nutrition. But if you wanna get fit, you have to feed your body and fuel your body. It’s like a car.READ MORE SUN STORIESChiselled AJ has found the balance between nutrition and trainingCredit: Instagram / @anthonyjoshuaExpect AJ to be able to go the distance in his future fights”You can’t expect it to go a long distance without fuel. I can’t expect to be fit enough to go a long distance without the right fuel. So that was actually a myth that I had in my head where it’s like, oh, because I’m lighter, I’m fitter.”So, pushing myself and that [means] eating right. I believe in that.” More
