Adam Wharton could have been rocket scientist but now he’s England’s rising star worth £60m wanted by Bayern Munich

YOUNG English star Adam Wharton has been a sensation since joining the Eagles from Blackburn for just £18million in January. His progress since then has been so spectacular that German giants Bayern Munich are planning to spend £60million signing him this summer.Adam Wharton in action against Wolves on SaturdayCredit: PAPalace youngster Adam Wharton has put in a string on strong performancesCredit: GettySo what’s all the fuss about, for a player who was in the Championship just a few months ago?Palace, then under Roy Hodgson, were desperate for an injection of life in midfield but there were concerns over paying a large fee for such a young player. But the South Londoners, under director of football Dougie Freedman, have a fine record of recruiting from the Championship, and Wharton, 20, is another gem. Those who know Wharton say he is never phased by taking the next step – making his start to life in the Premier League the norm for an exceptionally talented young player.READ MORE IN FOOTBALLDarragh Tuffy, who coached Wharton as a youth player at Blackburn, told SunSport: “All through his age groups he had this weird ability to never be phased by anything.”I watch him in the Premier League now and he is playing passes that he used to do in training.”He doesn’t get phased by pressure, you just can’t teach that.”He looks like he is in total control of what he is doing, takes the ball under pressure and looks like the calmest man on the pitch.”Most read in FootballCASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO WELCOME OFFERSWharton’s creative ability in midfield and eye for a pass has blown Palace fans, as well as Hodgson and then new boss Oliver Glasner away.Past coaches say it is a natural trait, something which stood out before he was even ten, and a side of his game which was needed as one of the smallest players on the pitch as a kid.Tuffy added: “He was always the smallest player in his age group coming through, a real late developer physically.Young stars set to shine at Euro 2024″In games that was never a problem for him.”He was always able to stand out with his technical attributes which he still does now. He didn’t hit his growth spurt until 17.”We knew he was going to come through that and as long as he carried on doing what he was good at we were going to have a really good footballer on our hands.”Wharton’s older brother, Scott, still plays for Blackburn and was a towering player in the academy which, along with maturation tests which predict a player’s eventual height, gave coaches the confidence the smallest lad on the pitch would grow into something special.Adam Wharton’s breakthrough season at PalaceBeing small early on helped mould a technically gifted player.Wharton’s nonchalant style had teachers at Moorland, the private school where Blackburn send players, comparing him to Glenn Hoddle and Chris Waddle – before he earned the nickname “Messi”.Charlie Jackson, who taught Wharton at Moorland having previously worked with United star Scott McTominay, told SunSport: “All our sessions were pass and move and he’d jump all over them, it was meat and drink for him.”He creates but sees the game, it’s like he has a crystal ball.”When I played him for school, you wouldn’t see him for 20 minutes in the game – he’d just go missing – and then all of a sudden you’d see a pass which is Maradona-esque.Adam Wharton, circled, was an outstanding prospect from a young ageCredit: Charlie Jackson/Moorland SchoolAdam Wharton, circled, during his time at Moorland SchoolCredit: Charlie Jackson/Moorland SchoolWharton’s former coach Charlie JacksonCredit: Charlie Jackson/Moorland SchoolMoorland School teachers realised Adam Wharton, circled, was a star in the makingCredit: Charlie Jackson/Moorland SchoolAdam Wharton caught the eye playing for BlackburnCredit: GettyWharton celebrates scoring for Blackburn against Birmingham in October 2022Credit: GettyAdam Wharton playing for England under 19sCredit: GettyAdam Wharton signs for BlackburnCredit: instagram @adamwharton10″Then he’s on it again and gets man of the match.”They were traits which caught Palace’s eye early on.Freedman even started scouting the boyhood Blackburn fan, who joined the club at Under-six level, before he had made his senior debut – a game in which he won man of the match. That effort and interest was not lost on Wharton and his representatives when it came to making a move in January, with Chelsea having also been keen. The move to the capital from sleepy Lancashire is a big one, especially with Wharton living in the thick of it not far from central London. But the England Under-21 has always been bright and intelligent, able to adapt to anything.Jackson added: “Oh, he didn’t even have to revise for GCSEs.”I use him as an example to the GCSE boys. Inside Tyson Fury’s 6,000 calories a day diet with Gypsy King’s favourite meals revealed ahead of Oleksandr Usyk fight

TYSON FURY has been fed a diet of 6,000 calories a day to fuel himself for his fight with Oleksandr Usyk. Fury meets Usyk for the undisputed crown next Saturday in Saudi Arabia in the heavyweight division’s first ever four-belt unification bout.Inside Tyson Fury’s daily meal planAnd after the Gypsy King touched down in his temporary Riyadh training base, he showed off his trimmed down physique. In charge of keeping Fury a lean, mean, fighting machine are nutritionists George Lockhart and Greg Marriott. And Lockhart – who formerly worked with UFC legend Conor McGregor – gave Betway an inside look into Fury’s diet. He ran down what the WBC champion ate in the week running up to his last bout, against Francis Ngannou in October. READ MORE IN BOXINGFury has his first meal at 10am, which varied from a FIVE-egg omelette with turkey bacon, two large roasted potatoes and 1/2 an avocado. Other days he would have three scrambled eggs, with turkey or chicken sausages, potatoes and fruits like pineapple or blueberries. At midday, Fury enjoys a snack of either fruits, a protein shake, peanut butter or a Greek yogurt. At 3pm, he has lunch which could be lemon pepper salmon or a chicken dish of either thighs, a BBQ breast or a curry with potatoes and veg. Most read in BoxingTYSON FURY VS OLEKSANDR USYK: ALL THE DETAILS YOU NEED AHEAD OF HUGE UNDISPUTED HEAVYWEIGHT BOUTCASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO WELCOME OFFERSFury, 35, has dinner at 6pm, which is a variation of one of his lunch meals. It then sets him up for two snacks, one at 9pm and another at 12pm, which is either fruit, a protein shake, yogurt or dark chocolate. Oleksandr Usyk spotted working on trademark move in training… but here’s why it WON’T work against Tyson FuryThe heavyweight is fighting in the early hours of the morning in Saudi, so he gets to bed late and enjoys a lie in to accustom to the time difference. And despite weighing over 19 STONE, chef Lockhart revealed Fury is not “a big eater”. He said: “Tyson’s very steady. Whether it’s an intense day or a light day, he’ll wake up and be almost the exact same weight, no matter what. “He has a little bit more of the higher fats. Though, he’s not actually a big eater like a lot of people would think. “When I started working with him, I thought I would be cooking for a freaking army, but that’s not the case.” Fury is undefeated in the ring and fears no opponent – but his biggest fight at the dinner table comes against vegetables. He said: “With Tyson, he’s not a big fan of veg, so I cook a lot for long periods of time to mask the flavour. READ MORE SUN STORIES”I’ll do it with chicken broth or bone broth. Or you can do it in a rice for a long period of time, so you can’t really taste it and blend it in. “But as the camp progresses, obviously veg has got to go up to make sure they’re getting all their micronutrients.” Fury’s fight week diet

Football boss Willie Kirk sacked for sleeping with a player insists ‘I’m not a criminal’ as he breaks silence

WILLIE KIRK says he “hasn’t committed a crime” after being sacked by Leicester City for sleeping with a player. The Foxes axed the Scot as boss of the Women’s Super League side six weeks ago after he was initially suspended for the relationship.Willie Kirk has opened up on his explosive exit from Leicester CityCredit: GettyNow Kirk, 45, has opened up on the controversy to try and set the record straight. He told the Daily Mail: “There’s a number of things I need to get off my chest.“First of all, me and my wife have been separated for over a year.“I think people just now are going ‘he’s a bad coach, he’s a bad husband, he’s a bad human.’”READ MORE ON FOOTBALLKirk arrived at Leicester in July 2022 as director of football as he replaced Lydia Bedford as manager that November before taking up that position permanently. They were on a six-match pointless run when he took charge but he helped them to beat the drop and guided them to a tenth place finish – but it was in the months after this that the romance began. He said: “One of the players contacted me away from work to express their feelings for me.“I said ‘that is ridiculous’ and just shut it down. That was that. Most read in FootballBEST FREE BET SIGN UP OFFERS FOR UK BOOKMAKERS“I kept shutting it down and said ‘it’s never going to happen, there’s a code of conduct.’”However, things then changed when the player suffered an injury last year.Every Premier League club’s most famous and also most surprising fanKirk said: “I think this is what justified it to us.“She picked up an injury at the tail end of the calendar year and was doing her rehab away from the training ground.“Just before Christmas, I agreed to meet on a personal level. She was injured so it wasn’t going to stop me doing my job because she couldn’t be selected.“Obviously I was trying to justify it to myself, which never made it right. After Christmas we started seeing each other once a week, so she’d come here, or the week after I’d go to hers.”Kirk and his partner were then discovered by an employee of another club during a trip to Milan in February. He said: “When we came back, we said ‘I think this has gone too far, we need to knock this on the head until the end of the season and either I’ll leave the club or you’ll leave the club.’“We had agreed we were taking too much of a risk.”The discovery of the relationship led to the club hauling in Kirk.He said: “I got pulled into a meeting saying there had been a complaint made about me and the club lawyer would be in touch and the external lawyers would arrange an investigation.“Ten days came and went. We were building up to the FA Cup game against Liverpool.“Fifteen minutes before the last training session on the Friday, I got pulled into the office by the women’s director and the internal lawyer was there and I just knew what it was.Who are these famous footballers?
“They said we need you to be honest with us ‘are you in a relationship with a player? We know all about it, we know you’ve been to Italy, we know it started just before Christmas.’”Kirk admitted to the relationship, and after an investigation that lasted three weeks, Leicester sacked him for gross misconduct. The player still remains at the club while Kirk unsuccessfully appealed the decision. He says: “From admitting it, I was treated and felt like a criminal.“I feel the club could have dealt with it better. I felt there was a lack of consistency with previous investigations.“It’s on me, it’s my fault, I should never have gone through with anything. There is a code of conduct, I was involved with putting it in place, I was certainly involved with living by it on a day-to-day basis and trying to drive our standards, so it is absolutely ridiculous that I’m the one that’s broken it.Kirk says he feels let down by the club after he was axedCredit: Getty“I think the way it was dealt with created a lot of uncertainty and rumours and counter-rumours.“I don’t think that helped the players or the staff and I think we’re now seeing that in results. They got through the Liverpool game but they’ve picked up two draws in the last seven games.“As difficult as it would have been, I felt I was due an audience with the staff and the players to explain myself and apologise face-to-face and to give my side of the story.“It might not have kept me there, but we’ll never know.”Kirk added: ‘It’s been frustrating. Wrongly, I think a lot of that frustration has turned into hate. I’ve hated myself. I hated the club. I’ve had moments where I have resented the relationship even though the relationship is still going on.“This wasn’t a manager exerting their power who said ‘jump into bed with me and I’ll play you in the starting XI.’“I’ve just carried this hate, which is wrong, but it’s come from this frustration of not being able to speak about it.“I’m not a criminal, I’ve not committed a crime. I’ve jeopardised an environment and that is a pretty big thing.“The club made mistakes in the past, I came in, turned around a points gap that had never been turned around before, retained WSL status.“Now I’ve made a mistake and they don’t want anything to do with me. I felt let down by the club in terms of that.”Kirk started his managerial career in Scotland at Hibernian. After a brief spell with Scottish non-league Preston Athletic’s men’s side, he then entered management in the WSL.He enjoyed three years in charge of Bristol City but left to sign for Manchester United as Casey Stoney’s assistant.READ MORE SUN STORIESHowever, he did not stay long with the Red Devils as just six months later he was off to become boss of Everton in December 2018.He was sacked after recording just two wins from their opening five games of the 2021/22 season.Jennifer Foster has since taken over as interim coach at LeicesterCredit: Getty More

David Moyes is the best manager I have worked with in my 30-plus year career and he will be missed at West Ham

IF a week is a long time in politics, then the same can be said of football. And in the modern-day, pressure-cooker environment of the Premier League, where the thunderous pace on the field is matched only by the extreme scrutiny off it, a 4½-year stint as a manager is nothing short of an ultra-marathon.David Moyes will get the great send-off he meritsCredit: PAMoyes will always be hailed for 2023 Europa Conference League gloryCredit: AFPDavid Moyes will depart his role at West Ham next week  as the fourth longest-serving  manager in the top flight behind only Jurgen Klopp, Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta. And he leaves with everyone’s utmost respect, gratitude and admiration, having devoted every ounce of his energy to improving and growing our club  since the minute he walked through the door.He also leaves as only the third manager in our 129-YEAR history to have secured a major piece of silverware. David was the architect of that magical night in Prague last June that gave an entire generation of Hammers fans their first taste of European glory and a memory that will last a lifetime.READ MORE IN FOOTBALLIn the annals of claret and blue, the name David Moyes will rightly sit alongside the great Ron Greenwood and John Lyall. And like those two legendary bosses, his tenure has been laid on a foundation of hard work, honesty and integrity. When he returned to London Stadium in December 2019, he was tasked with galvanising  an expensively-assembled but under-performing squad. The task appeared to become even harder when Covid struck just two months later. That threw the football calendar into chaos, depriving clubs like West Ham of the elements needed to climb the table — a close-knit squad and a packed stadium full of passionate fans. Most read in FootballCASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO WELCOME OFFERSHowever, with true East  London ‘never give up’ grit and determination, the West Ham family came together and there’s no doubt that even deeper bonds were forged in those unprecedented, unique months.David threw himself into the challenge and left no stone unturned in creating a belief and spirit at our Rush Green training ground that ensured our Premier League status.David Moyes reveals why Declan Rice is behind West Ham’s horror run of formNot only that, but he found time to do his bit supporting the community in need. This is something that means so much to our club — doing everything from calling isolated and elderly supporters during lockdown, to working as a  volunteer driver to deliver fruit and vegetables to residents in his hometown of Preston.A measure of the man behind the manager.Since then, he has been responsible for a period of stability and positive growth on the pitch. Two top-seven Prem finishes, three consecutive seasons of European competition and some unforgettable victories. Those came both at home  and on our travels — not least June 7, 2023, in the Fortuna Arena and Jarrod Bowen’s last-gasp winner against Fiorentina, leading to immortality and parties  on the streets of east London. On Saturday afternoon, David will lead his team into battle at the London Stadium for the final time against Luton.MOYES RECORD AS HAMMERS’ BOSSDAVID MOYES’ two reigns at London Stadium includes a rare Premier League milestone and a treasured piece of club history.
Here’s a rundown of the 61-year-old, ex-Everton and Manchester United chief’s West Ham record.
November 2017 – Appointed Hammers’ boss for the first time, with the club in the drop zone.
January 2018 – Became only the fourth manager – behind Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger and Harry Redknapp – to clock up 200 Prem wins.
May 2018 – Left after the end of his six-month deal, having kept West Ham up.
    December 2019 – Re-appointed boss, with the Hammers 17th.
May 2020 – Finished 16th with 39 points, the club’s lowest Prem tally since 2011.
2020-21 – Came sixth with West Ham’s highest-ever Prem tally of 65 points.
2021-22 – Back-to-back top-seven finishes for first time in club history. Came seventh and made the Europa League semi-finals.
2022-23 – Became only the third Hammers’ manager to win a major trophy, beating Fiorentina in the Europa Conference League final.
Unbeaten in that tournament with 12 wins and a draw.
But ended up 14th in the Prem – the lowest position any team winning silverware in Europe has finished.
