Steven Gerrard ‘flirted’ with Chelsea transfer and believed Rafa Benitez would take £37.5m fee to rebuild Liverpool

STEVEN GERRARD feared Rafa Benitez wanted to sell him to Chelsea and use the £37.5million transfer fee to rebuild Liverpool. The Londoners made several attempts to lure Gerrard to Stamford Bridge in the 04-05 season but the midfielder eventually extended his contract with the Reds six weeks after lifting the Champions League trophy in 2005.
Steven Gerrard was linked with a switch the Blues in the 04-05 season
Gerrard has since reflected on the transfer saga and admitted he regrets toying with the idea of a switch to Stamford Bridge but was very tempted by the offer.
He told Gary Neville on Sky Sports Soccer Box in June 2020: “I regret the little bit of flirting back then and how that all blew up.
“The fact is I didn’t know whether I was coming or going with Rafa at the time. Rafa was having conversations with me like ‘I know your agent is talking to Real Madrid and Chelsea’.

“I got a paranoid feeling at the time that Rafa would have taken money to try and build Liverpool on.
“Chelsea bid £37.5m. At the time, massive amounts of dough but what would you get for that now?”
    Neville joked: “Half a Fred!”
Gerrard continued: “[Jose] Mourinho was a massive part of that. A lack of maturity on my part allowed me to think about it and flirt with that idea a bit.
“But now I have no regrets at all because Liverpool are the club I love – and that’s the way it should be.”

Klopp forked out £85million to bring the ace to Anfield from Benfica to fill the void left by Sadio Mane’s departure to Bayern Munich.
Nunez scored in Liverpool’s opening Premier League game at Fulham but has found it difficult since.
He was sent-off for headbutting Joachim Andersen in the club’s next match against Crystal Palace which led to a three-match ban and he has failed to find the target in five games since returning from suspension.
Klopp paired him with Diogo Jota in attack last night for the 2-0 Champions League win over Rangers, but the South American was unable to find a way past Gers stopper Allan McGregor.

Now Nunez has jokingly claimed that his woes in front of goal are due to him being unable to understand his German manager’s accent when he speaks English.
In an interview with TNT Sports, he said: “The truth is, I honestly don’t understand anything when he talks.
“Of course, I ask my teammates to see what he said, but I think he is very clear about his style of play.
“He asks us to do the simple things, not to be afraid to play games, to have confidence. And when he loses a ball, he wants us to put pressure on him.

“That’s what he always asks us, we have things clear.”
Klopp called for Liverpool fans to have patience with Nunez earlier this week.
And he remains pleased with what he has seen, saying: “We can see that. The way the boys up front moved together was extremely, extremely good for only one session working on it, to be honest.
“We never did it before. We had now one session and that with low intensity because we only played recently.
“You saw how good a striker he [Nunez] is to be constantly in those situations. Everybody saw tonight that this will happen. So all good.” More

He said: “The team is not flying, and that makes it not easier for a striker, especially a finisher.
“It’s not that we aren’t creating chances but it’s not like everything is clicking and we put in one player and he finishes.

“[The reason] why he didn’t start this game [against Brighton] was he came from international and he had doms in the hamstrings and when you get this information from the medical team, they give some kind of minutes of how long he’s allowed to play. Don’t start anybody who’s only allowed to play 20 minutes or 15.”
Klopp added: “Of course, the three game suspension didn’t help him to settle, that’s clear. But that’s pretty much all.

And now reports suggest the Reds have had someone keeping a keen eye on Duran.
Colombian journalist Pipe Sierra claims Liverpool have sent the same scout who followed Diaz when he was at Porto to go and watch Duran.
The scout in question clearly has good judgement, with Diaz turning out to be a brilliant buy for the Reds.
The forward hit the ground running as soon as he arrived at Anfield earlier this year in a deal worth up to £50m.

Meanwhile Duran, who plays up front, has scored eight goals and provided six assists in 27 games for Chicago Fire after signing from Colombian side Envigado in January.
But the MLS outfit could be willing to let Duran move on already for the right money.
A fee of around £10million plus extras may be enough to seal a deal, while Sierra claims £8.5m could even be enough for his signature.
Fire sold keeper Gabriel Slonina, also 18, to Chelsea for a similar price over the summer.

The Blues are also keeping tabs on Duran, as are clubs all over Europe.

Duran made his senior Colombia debut last week, featuring alongside Anfield star Diaz in the friendly wins over Guatemala and Mexico. More

Liverpool ‘join Arsenal in Youri Tielemans transfer race’ with Leicester midfielder’s contract expiring in summer

The Belgian international’s contract expires in the summer of 2023 and Leicester may look to cash in before he leaves on a free.
Tielemans looks unlikely to pen an extension so he will be free to negotiate free agency with any clubs outside of England from January 1.
Juventus and Real Madrid are said to be looking forward to that date.
But it’s Prem rivals Arsenal and Manchester United who are expected to be Liverpool’s biggest competition to secure a January cut-price deal.

The Gunners have reportedly been working on a deal for Tielemans over the past year, but no official offer has been made yet.
Mikel Arteta may be tempted to pull the trigger on a bid if the Belgian is available for a cut-price fee.
He has previously indicated that he wants to leave Leicester for a team competing in the Champions League.
However, one report claimed that Youri Tielemans is the “chosen one” for Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag.

Duran plays on the right but is tipped to move into the middle later in his career and he has the pace and trickery that fit the Anfield model.
Liverpool already have the teenager’s compatriot Luis Diaz on the left side and Duran could be moved for quickly because of growing interest in him.
Duran only came into the Chicago side this season and clubs in Spain and Germany are on his trail.
His fee would not scare any of his admirers and may be around £10million plus extras.

Fire recently sold keeper Gabriel Slonina, also 18, to Chelsea for a similar price and would expect the same for their next discovery.
Todd Boehly’s Blues spies are among those checking on Duran and with so many American owners in the Premier League, the Chicago cub is a name being discussed in high places.
There would be no work permit issues either as Duran is now a full cap under new coach Nestor Lorenzo, having made his debut against Guatemala last week.
His compatriot Diaz was in action as Liverpool drew 3-3 with Brighton on Saturday afternoon.

The Seagulls raced into a shock 2-0 lead through Leandro Trossard’s double, before a Roberto Firmino brace either side of half-time brought it back to 2-2.

Ruben Neves ‘snubbed Man Utd and Liverpool in summer to hold out on dream Barcelona transfer’

But he ended up staying put as Bruno Lage’s men clung onto their man despite widespread interest.
According to Sport, two clubs who were hoping to negotiate with Neves were Man Utd and Liverpool.
Both sides were in search of options in central midfield over the summer.
Erik ten Hag was looking to replace the departures of Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic, while Jurgen Klopp began searching towards the end of the window following injury concerns and poor form.

However, it is reported that Neves showed very little desire to negotiate with either club.
This was because he had caught wind of Barcelona’s interest in him.
The Catalan giants’ financial situation meant they would not be able to sign him in the summer window, but Neves is willing to wait until 2023.
It is said to be his “dream” move, with Barca seeing the Portuguese international as a suitable replacement to Sergio Busquets – who is set to join Inter Miami at the end of the season.
