Jurgen Klopp rules out Liverpool’s title hopes after Arsenal loss as pundits blame Sadio Mane transfer exit for woes

LIVERPOOL legends John Barnes and Jamie Redknapp agree with Jurgen Klopp that the Reds are already out of the title race after just two months of the season. And former Reds midfielder Redknapp has suggested the “strange” summer sale of Sadio Mane has been a big factor in their stuttering start to the campaign.

Sunday’s 3-2 defeat at Prem leaders Arsenal has left the Merseyside giants 14 points off of top spot.
Tellingly, they are also 13 points behind champions Manchester City who are poised behind the Gunners and look in title-winning form again with Erling Haaland continuing to score at will.
Liverpool still have 90 points to play for in a season which will be highly unusual due to a mid-season break for a first-ever winter World Cup in Qatar.
But their experienced boss Klopp knows a return of ten points from a possible 24 in the early running has left them a mountain to climb.

And after defeat at the Emirates, the German admitted: “We’re not in the (title) race.”
That is a view shared by Barnes, 58, who won the top flight twice with Liverpool.
He told Sky Sports: “It’s going to be very difficult. I don’t think we’re playing well enough, but I think we can still finish in the top four.
“I don’t want to say the title’s over [but] can we see Man City or Arsenal dropping loads of points?”

Fellow former Reds midfielder Redknapp, 49, who won the League Cup and Uefa Super Cup during his time at Anfield, thinks the sale of striker Mane to Bayern Munich has weakened their squad.
He told Sky Sports: “You start to look at the age of the squad, and they need to improve what they’re trying to achieve right now.
“Mane… it was a very strange decision to sell him.” More

Jurgen Klopp’s time at Liverpool could be coming to an end, fears Didi Hamann as Reds legend says there’s ‘no spark’

Hamann, 49, who spent seven years at Anfield until 2006, was concerned by various issues during Liverpool’s 3-2 loss at Arsenal.
Klopp celebrated his seventh anniversary on Merseyside on Saturday but Hamann said: “At some stage, I think we will have that discussion about the manager and I’m not sure how far we are off that.
“He said that he still feels that he’s the right man to do it, but I see little things like Jordan Henderson midweek seeing his number going up and reluctantly taking his armband off and coming off, shaking his head.
“This is something that we haven’t seen at Liverpool for five years. Maybe these are little signs that people have little problems with the team or even the manager.”

“The dynamics at Liverpool are no different to anywhere else and if the results aren’t there then the manager will come under pressure.”
Liverpool played 63 games last season and they were in with a chance of winning the quadruple but they finished second behind Manchester City in the Premier League and then lost the Champions League final to Real Madrid.
Now, Hamman says Klopp’s team look jaded.
He told talkSPORT: “As a big team, you’re always in transition but they’ve been at the top of their capacities for the last three or four years. What they achieved and what they did last year was second to none.

“They were breathtaking going forward. Every time that they did go forward you felt that something was going to happen.
“This Liverpool team looks tired, they look pedestrian and they just look flat. I’m not sure where the spark is going to come from because they’ve won games in the past.
“They beat Rangers a few days ago but they’re obviously far superior to Rangers. I trust that they’ll know where the spark is going to come from but whether it’s the end of an era?

Cautious Klopp looks shattered, spent and bereft of answers – subbing off Salah may prove Liverpool boss’ downfall

WHEN Jurgen Klopp hauled off Mo Salah, with 20 minutes to go and a thrilling clash with Arsenal tied at 2-2, it felt like a watershed moment.Since when did Klopp start making such flawed decisions?
Jurgen Klopp has already thrown in the towel in the title raceCredit: Rex
Since when did the Liverpool boss start showing such caution, replacing Salah with Fabinho and redeploying Jordan Henderson to the right of midfield?
And since when could Salah —  Liverpool’s supreme goalscorer, their Golden Boot winner and reigning Footballer of the Year — start being considered expendable when there was a crucial game to be won?
Klopp claimed he was still going for victory, despite that negative substitution — but Arsenal prevailed through a disputed penalty and went 14 points clear of their visitors.
Earlier on, the German had been too late in substituting the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold — and the world’s most controversial right-back was at fault for Arsenal’s second goal.

Since when did Klopp start making glaring errors? Or has he often made them and Liverpool were just so good that we barely noticed?
In the last five seasons, Liverpool have won the title, reached three Champions League finals and collected every A-list trophy.
In three of the last four years, Klopp’s men have topped 90 points.
And in May, they were within six days of a Quadruple. But in the aftermath of that Emirates defeat, Klopp looked shattered and spent — bored of questions, bereft of answers, a man in need of a break.

Out on the Emirates pitch, his team — judged against their own ridiculously-high standards — had lacked energy, inspiration and belief, a side in need of a reset.
The Liverpool boss groaned: “If we are winning, we have five million things to talk about. With losing, the conversations are a bit more rusty.”
His Reds have still only suffered four meaningful defeats in all competitions this calendar year.
But Klopp has been a relentless winner for most of his seven-year Anfield reign.
He regards any draws as defeats and is as tetchy as hell whenever Liverpool fail to win.
After just two wins from eight Premier League games, Klopp is sick of questions about the after-effects of his team’s narrow failure to complete a clean sweep last term.
But is this early-season run a prolonged hangover, or the start of Liverpool’s downfall?
With Klopp seemingly forlorn, Salah without a Prem goal since August and Virgil van Dijk having lost his forcefield of invincibility, it feels like the latter is a genuine possibility.
With a cheerleading troupe of former Liverpool players in the media, Klopp is usually immune to criticism — so it was interesting to hear his fellow German Didi Hamann delivering an intelligent assessment and questioning the manager’s long-term future on talkSPORT yesterday.
If Klopp feels he can no longer compete with Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, just as he could no longer compete with Guardiola’s Bayern Munich while at Borussia Dortmund, could he walk?
Liverpool’s starting XI on Sunday at the Emirates was, on average, 3.5 years older than that of Mikel Arteta’s vibrant Arsenal.
It is not that Liverpool have stagnated — Diogo Jota, Thiago Alcantara, Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Ibrahima Konate and Fabio Carvalho have all joined since the 2019-2020 title success.

But there are too many key players past their 30th birthdays, including Liverpool’s best defender, Van Dijk, and most potent forward, Salah.
They lack a creative attacking midfield spark — which may be Carvalho in the long run.
And Liverpool just keep conceding early goals. For so long the Premier League’s most industrious team, Klopp’s men are no longer turning up for work on time.
Klopp has suffered one previous crisis, two seasons ago, but that was because all his senior centre-backs had suffered long-term injuries.
This season, there are no such obvious excuses. There have been injuries but Liverpool’s starting line-up has rarely looked weak.
In that Emirates press conference, Klopp did not have any convincing remedy for Liverpool’s slump — blaming individual errors, which used to be so rare.
He said: “We work on solutions and, against Arsenal, I saw some of them.
“But when you then knock down with your backside what you built with your hands, that is  really not helpful.”
Asked whether he had deeper concerns about his team’s form, Klopp replied: “Yes, of course I am not happy. How can I be?
“Your colleague told me that he knows me just being happy all the time and making jokes.
“I’m not sure exactly which Jurgen Klopp he knows — but we are not  in a mood for jokes.”
At the end of his media duties, Klopp was asked why he substituted Salah and he winced and reprimanded his press officer for allowing that one final question.
He replied that Liverpool needed to ‘defend at a high level’, and that Salah had ‘put in a real shift’ but that he felt Henderson could do a better defensive job on the right.
    Read More on The Sun
It sounded as if Klopp had lost a little faith in Salah; that he had lost his supreme belief in the ability of his ‘mentality monsters’ to seize every opponent by the throat. And it looked as though Klopp was tired and older — that he had lost his sparkle, his mojo.
When City go to Anfield on Sunday, we will discover whether it was all just a trick of the light. More

They head into that game off the back of defeat to table toppers Arsenal, who they lost to 3-2 at the weekend, leaving them 14 points adrift.
And ex-Reds midfielder Hamann says Liverpool “look pedestrian” and “flat”.
Despite Klopp’s brilliance, which has seen him win the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup and EFL Cup with Liverpool, Hamann struggles to see where the Reds’ spark “is going to come from”.

Hamann continued: “The dynamics at Liverpool are no different to anywhere else and if the results aren’t there then the manager will come under pressure.
“If they were to get beat next week or not win against Manchester City, which at the moment seems very likely, you could be eight or nine points off fourth place.

Liverpool ‘targeting Rennes winger Jeremy Doku, 20, in January transfer window to add spark to Klopp’s struggling Reds’

LIVERPOOL are interested in signing Rennes star Jeremy Doku, according to reports. The Reds have endured a dismal start to the season, falling to their latest defeat at Arsenal on Sunday.

Jurgen Klopp’s men lost star winger Sadio Mane to Bayern Munich in the summer, while Mohamed Salah has hardly looked the same player in 2022.
Luis Diaz hit the ground running after arriving from Porto in January, but left the Emirates in a knee brace and on crutches.
The Reds uncharacteristically lacked a spark in the second half against the Gunners, and could look to add more invention in January.
According to Calciomercato, Liverpool hold a long-term interest in Rennes star Doku.

Jurgen Klopp taunts Arsenal over Gabriel Jesus transfer and why Man City sold Brazilian to Gunners

The striker has hit the ground running with five goals and four assists in 10 appearances across all competitions and is helping Mikel Arteta’s side rival his former team for the title.
Klopp sang the Brazil international’s praises ahead of today’s clash between Liverpool and the North Londoners at the Emirates.
But the German tactician suggested City would have never sold him to a more direct rival.
Klopp said: “I don’t know Gabriel on a personal basis but I always liked him as a player.

“I know City would not have sold him to every club but to Arsenal the distance was big enough geographically and they did it.
“Exceptional player, you always saw that when he played for City. The Gabriel Jesus role at City was a nine, a winger, last year everybody said City had no No.9.
“He was still there but he played obviously from the wing and now he can play his role.”
Jesus joined City from Palmeiras in 2017 but never managed to land a starting role on a consistent basis despite a raft of impressive appearances.

And local media reports claim the spies checked on France youth international Sacha Boey and Denmark centre-back Victor Nelsson, plus Turkey international wingers Kerem Akturkoglu and Yunus Akgun.
The quartet have helped Galatasaray shine this season, with last Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Adana Demirspor leaving them level on points with league leaders Basaksehir.
Right-back Boey, 22, has impressed since arriving from Rennes during the summer.
