Forgotten Man Utd keeper signed by Sir Alex Ferguson ‘set for Premier League return in controversial Liverpool transfer’

FORMER Manchester United keeper Ron-Robert Zieler could be set for a return to the Premier League amid interest from Liverpool. The German shot-stopper, 34, left Old Trafford 13 years ago in search of first-team football.

Signing for Man Utd in 2005, Zieler was included in Sir Alex Ferguson’s squad for their League Cup clash against Middlesbrough during the 2008/09 campaign.
But he never made an appearance for the Red Devils and left to join Hannover in 2010.
A short spell back in England with Leicester in 2016 saw him play nine Premier League games.
He then returned to the Bundesliga for a stint with Stuttgart and is now enjoying a second spell at Hannover.

But according to Bild, he could be set for a shock move to Anfield.
That is because Hannover’s ex-sporting director, Jorg Schmadtke, is expected to make the switch to Liverpool.
And Zieler is being heavily linked as his first signing on Merseyside given Schmadtke brought him to Hannover more than a decade ago.
Liverpool are in the market for a back-up keeper to Alisson as their No2 Caoimhin Kelleher is attracting interest from Tottenham, Brentford and Brighton.

The Irishman, 24, has played just 20 matches during his five years under Jurgen Klopp and is now understood to be seeking more game time.
His departure could leave a vacant space for Zieler – who was Joachim Lowe’s third-choice keeper in Germany’s 2014 World Cup-winning squad.
Zieler has one year left on his contract with Hannover after the club triggered an extension in March.
And the club’s sporting director, Marcus Mann, recently said: “Ron has a contract with us, we’re making plans with him.”
But Liverpool will remain confident they can prise him away from the German outfit, particularly if they snatch Champions League qualification.
Klopp’s men sit one point adrift of fourth-place Manchester United in the Premier League table having played one game more.
But they have just three matches to close the gap on the Red Devils – which come against Leicester, Aston Villa and Southampton. More

Arsenal learn Moises Caicedo price as fans complain transfer will cost ‘almost as much as Bellingham’

ARSENAL have learned how much they will need to pay in order to land Moises Caicedo after Brighton reportedly named their asking price. Caicedo, who starred in Brighton’s 1-0 win over Manchester United, was the subject of a £70million bid from the Gunners in the January transfer window.

Caicedo put in a strong performance to help Brighton beat Manchester United
However, the Seagulls rejected this offer and Caicedo has remained a key part of Roberto de Zerbi’s set-up on the south coast after signing a new long-term contract running to 2027.
But now Brighton have named their asking price for any potential suitors for the midfielder.
According to Sky Sports, they will expect offers “well in excess” of the £70m offer submitted by Arsenal in January.
The report adds that Brighton will not stand in the 21-year-old’s way if a suitable bid is arrives this summer.

Arsenal have retained their interest in Caicedo, with the Ecuador international reportedly one of the top names on Mikel Arteta’s six-man summer shopping list.
Caicedo’s strong form this season has also piqued the interest of clubs such as Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea.
Reacting to the news online, one Twitter user said: “Bellingham won’t go for much more than that.
“Good player but I’d be disappointed if we paid that for him after saying Jude was too expensive.”

A second typed: “Caicedo is not worth £100m. Yes he’s good but that’s just a scam.”
A third wrote: “If Brighton demand £100m+ for Caicedo we should walk. He’s not worth that and neither is Declan Rice.”
The same policy goes for fellow Brighton star Alexis Mac Allister, who has reportedly held talks with Man Utd over a transfer. More

Premier League sides were keen on his signature, but Madrid are close to sealing a deal on a contract worth £12million-a-year, according to Marca.
Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea have all been tipped with an interest in the midfielder.
Liverpool dropped out of the race last month after discovering that a transfer would be too expensive.
Whereas now they have been joined by Man City on the wayside.

The report suggests that Bellingham has opted to move to the Santiago Bernabeu despite being offered more money by the Premier League side.
The Spanish outlet claims that Madrid have been planning the transfer for over a year and now have an “agreement in principle”.

This deal will see the Englishman become a Madrid player on June 30 and will sign a contract until 2029.
However, the clubs are believed still yet to have agreed a fee.

German outlet BILD is suggesting that Dortmund are asking for £124million, while Madrid are prepared to offer between £90m and £105m.
But Marca, suggests that the “friendly” Dortmund will “not push the operation” back and will take a lower fee.
Should the transfer go through it would be a major coup for Madrid.
Bellingham will be hoped to ease the loss of veterans Toni Kroos and Luka Modric, who are both approaching the end of their careers.
He is seen as the long-term successor for the latter.
And it’s reckoned Eduardo Camavinga and Aurelien Tchouameni have both spoken to Bellingham about joining them in Spain.

But his mood switched when the topic changed to referee Paul Tiernery’s decision to award a soft free kick to Spurs before Richarlison’s equaliser and his celebration following Jota’s stoppage-time winner.
He told Sky Sports: “My celebration towards the fourth official, I didn’t say any bad words or nothing.
“But it was unnecessary that I got punished immediately. I pulled my hamstring or abductor, or whatever. So fine, that’s fair.
“But what he said to me when he gave me the yellow card – pfff.”

The interviewer tried to get the German to elaborate by saying: “Go on.”
The former Borussia Dortmund chief replied: “No, that’s not possible. It’s absolutely not possible. But it’s not okay as well.”

Klopp then tried to walk away, prompting the interviewer to say: “Hang on.”

Klopp didn’t hold back with his opinion on Tiernery before trying to prematurely end the interview.
He said: “We have our history with Tierney, I really don’t know what he has against us.
“He has said there [are] no problems but that cannot be true.
“How he looks at me, I don’t understand it.
“In England nobody has to clarify these situations, it’s really tricky and hard to understand.

I’m an ex-Liverpool defender… Klopp put me up front against Arsenal when I was drunk and we got a last minute equaliser

STEVEN CAULKER has revealed he was left “sh***** himself” before his Liverpool debut – when Jurgen Klopp threw him on as a striker against Arsenal. The defender was a surprise loan signing from QPR in Klopp’s first season as Liverpool manager.

But things were not going well off the pitch for the star and he has opened up in recent days over his issue with alcohol.
Caulker had been drinking the night before the Anfield clash with Arsenal and wondered if he was even sober enough to play.
But events would take an even stranger turn when Klopp famously subbed him on to play up front – with Liverpool nicking a dramatic late draw.
Caulker told the popular Under the Cosh podcast: “I was sh***** myself and thought ‘I’m gonna start here.’ Because they had seven centre-halves out injured.

“And I was thinking ‘Oh my God, am I even sober? How the f*** am I going to do this? That train journey up, I was panicking because I hadn’t been taking care of myself, I was a mess.
“I don’t remember who played centre-half but [Klopp] put someone else in. He said to me ‘go warm up’ but we were losing 3-2. But he said ‘no, you’re coming on. I’m going to put you up front’.
“We ended up getting the equaliser and after the game he just came over high-fiving me [and saying] that they all think it’s crazy until it works.”
Caulker made himself a nuisance in the box in his cameo appearance but it was Adam Lallana who volleyed home in the dying seconds of the game.

The two players would also be at the centre of another dramatic finale only 10 days later.
Norwich had drawn level with the Reds at Carrow Road to make it 4-4 in stoppage time.
But then Caulker – again playing in an advanced position – would see his effort blocked before Lallana scored an incredible late winner.
Caulker, now 31, would move to clubs in Scotland and Turkey before eventually coming home earlier this year as he joined Championship side Wigan. More

That came despite Tierney leaving Spurs boss Ryan Mason incandescent for not dismissing match winner Diogo Jota for splitting Oliver Skipp’s head open with a high boot
