Southampton 2 Liverpool 3: Reds go EIGHT points clear at top of Premier League after Salah penalty and McCarthy howler

ANYONE who suggested last summer might have been the time for Mohammed Salah to move on must be hoping they never actually said as much.Liverpool’s Egyptian King delivered a brace to send the Reds eight points clear and keep their foot firmly on the throat of a struggling Manchester City.Mohamed Salah scored twice to guide Liverpool to a narrow win over SouthamptonCredit: ReutersDominik Szoboszlai opened the scoring with a stunning curlerCredit: GettySaints fought back with Adam Armstong scoring and assistingCredit: GettyBut Salah was on hand to score past blundering Alex McCarthyCredit: PAHe was needed too.Rock bottom Southampton were not supposed to be a problem – but they caused no end of issues against a somewhat out of sorts Liverpool. You would have been forgiven for thinking Storm Bert and getting to the south coast would be Slot’s biggest concern this weekend. But goals from Adam Armstrong and Mateus Fernandes, after Dominik Szoboszlai’s opener, had Saints ahead and Liverpool worried they had blown a brilliant chance.Until Salah turned up. One delicate and delightful finish before a clinical penalty. He should have grabbed a third, too, but that does not matter right now.If there were still doubts about securing his new deal within the club, anyone harbouring them should be removed from their post.Russell Martin, spared the sack during the international break, named a team which appeared to have been selected with the help of a blindfold and a darts board.Towering Paul Onuachu returned from the cold up front for his first Premier League start since May 2023, the day Southampton were relegated. Most read in FootballBEST FREE BET SIGN UP OFFERS FOR UK BOOKMAKERSWith defender Jan Bednarek injured midfielder Flynn Downes dropped into a defence which included winger Ryan Fraser at left-back against Salah. Both experiments largely failed, though Southampton were improved from recent performances.Mo Salah appears to confirm Liverpool transfer exit live on Sky Sports after ripping Man Utd to shredsMartin’s concern will be that they only seem to turn up against teams they have little chance of beating.Liverpool had their own injury issues, with Trent Alexander-Arnold injured, but they were solved in a much more straightforward manner as Conor Bradley stepped in.Despite being the lowest scorers in the league the Saints had Liverpool concerned early on, Fernandes and Adam Armstrong causing trouble.Off the ball, they were very content to sit deep, Onuachu back defending 25 yards from goal with a bank of four and then five behind him. While Alex McCarthy, in for the injured Aaron Ramsdale, had to stop Salah twice at his near post, Liverpool were largely restricted to shots from range – Szboszlai and Cody Gakpo both trying their luck and seeing efforts saved. The league leaders were pinning Southampton back but they were holding firm. What a moment, then, for Downes to inflict the weekly act of self-harm.After McCarthy saved a soft effort from Bradley, he rolled the ball to Fernandes on the edge of the box.Under pressure from Curtis Jones the young midfielder played back to Downes who, without as much as a glance up, hacked the ball to the feet of Szoboszlai and watched him curl a left-foot finish off the inside of the post.Downes came close to making up for his error but was denied by Kelleher. The goal had caused a shift, though. Liverpool looked unsure of themselves.Teen Tyler Dibling was causing issues down the right, snatching possession and driving forwards. There must be something about St. Mary’s which renders defenders incompetent. It has troubled Southampton all season and Liverpool now seemed to have been infected. They were inviting the Saints onto them before a sloppy challenge from Andy Robertson, bringing down Dibling on the 12-yard line after Virgil van Dijk had conceded possession, gave the hosts a penalty and their way back in.After a shocking spot kick, Armstrong was sharp enough to beat everyone to the rebound and tap in just an eighth goal of the Premier League season for Southampton.Given mistakes at the back have gifted so many goals to opponents this season, it was about time one went Southampton’s way.McCarthy spilled the ball from a corner, but luckily it was prodded away to Fraser. The Scot moved forwards and clipped the ball ahead for Dibling who took one touch before lifting it over the Liverpool defence and into Armstrong. After turning and sorting his feet out, Armstrong squared for Fernandes who grabbed his first Premier League goal with a cool first time finish.Fans were delirious in the wind and rain and those on the pitch looked to be keeping their cool and, more importantly, the ball. But if there is any team you would be confident of coming from behind to beat it is Martin’s Southampton.Their under-pressure manager cannot be too downbeat about conceding against Liverpool, but he must just wish they did not make it so easy.Ryan Gravenberch, reinvented under Slot, lifted a ball from deep to set Salah racing away one-on-one.McCarthy got his angles all wrong, meaning a delightful cushioned touch was all it took to send the ball slowly rolling over the line. He had done well in Ramsdale’s place to that point, but the ex-Arsenal man would have been sharper here.READ MORE SUN STORIESSouthampton were hanging on well, Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Jack Stephens with brave challenges, but another sloppy mistake cost them.Sub Yuki Suguwara, defending a Salah cross at the far post all but caught the ball with his right hand. There was no hesitation from ref Sam Barrott and no VAR to rescue the Saints, while the outcome was inevitable with Salah standing over it. More

Liverpool’s Mo Salah is NOT world class… but I can name five players who are, says Troy Deeney

I HAVE received a bit of heat this week for some comments on Mohamed Salah — so let me talk you through it.I claimed Salah is NOT world class. Mo Salah is brilliant player, but falls short of being world classTroy Deeney has named five players who could walk into any team in the worldThe Liverpool player is a brilliant winger, his goalscoring numbers are incredible and he has achieved some truly amazing things at the club. But world class? No.Let me make this clear — this is not a personal attack on Salah. I think he is a top player and a great guy.I played against him a lot in my career and can appreciate just how good he is.READ MORE FOOTBALL NEWSBut trying to be everyone’s friend? That’s not my bag. I will say it how it is.In general, this is about the term “world class” as a whole — what does it actually mean and when can we use it?Firstly, it is a very lucid way to describe a footballer. It’s not like at The Masters when you get your Green Jacket and you are a champion of Augusta forever, regardless of how bad you play afterwards. Most read in FootballFOOTBALL FREE BETS AND SIGN UP DEALSIt is something as a player that takes ages to earn and probably half a season to lose, and then the fight to get it back begins again. Some players — great players — have struggled to earn that title at all during their careers. Top 10 highest-paid Premier League starsGary Neville is one of the most decorated full-backs of all time, but we all considered Roberto Carlos or Cafu to be a level above.Yet if I had Neville’s career behind me, would I care if someone said I wasn’t world class? Of course not.No player is safe from dropping out of this subjective, opinionated category, but there is always a way back. For instance, someone like Kylian Mbappe I would argue is also currently NOT world class. An incredible player, won plenty, got his big move to Real Madrid this summer, but his form has not been at the level of previous seasons.PSG superstar Kylian Mbappe has failed to hit the mark in Madrid so farTo earn and keep that world class tag, I believe you need to be able to transcend your whole team, transcend the game — not simply by having the most shirt sales, but being able to consistently lift a club to glory by yourself. Can Mbappe at 25 get back to being world class? Definitely. But for now, he has some work to do.As for Salah, you can look at his stats — 165 Prem goals in 274 games — and say this and that but ultimately, it is about what he brings to the team and the impact he has season after season, not just in certain games and moments.I was on the end of loads of drubbings at Watford when Salah was amazing for Liverpool. But when we prepared to face them, it was not just a case of “stop Salah and you win”.Changes to the Premier League for 2024/25NOTHING stays the same forever. And that includes the Premier League, which is making a number of tweaks this season.Team news will now be released 75 MINUTES before kick-off, 15 minutes earlier than had been the case before.Things could get crowded on the touchline, with the number of substitutes permitted to warm-up boosted from three players per team to FIVE.There’s also a change to how added time is calculated when a team scores a goal, an update to the ‘multiball’ system and the introduction of semi-automated offsides – but not straight away.Go here to read about all the changes to the Premier League for 2024/25.It was a lot harder when they also had Sadio Mane in the side who, in my opinion, was more effective over that period than Salah. And if we were basing this purely off numbers and goals, then Bruno Fernandes would be one of the best midfielders in the world, but he is not.You see where I am coming from?I can remember Graeme Souness once telling me his theory on whether you were world class, and it was based on whether you could walk into any starting XI in world football. With that in mind, here are the five players currently in world football who, for me, can be deemed world class — who could stroll into any team on the planet and start:READ MORE SUN STORIESSaying all this, it is just my opinion. Someone can turn around and tell me I am wrong and that is absolutely fine. And if Salah is worrying about what  I think, then he is definitely not  world class.Vinicius Junior is one the best wingers in the worldErling Haaland is the best striker in the worldVirgil van Dijk is a world class Prem defender More

Captaincy options for Gameweek 12: Bruno Fernandes and Mohamed Salah lead nominees

IT’S once again time for Dream Team managers to select their captain (and vice captain) for the Gameweek ahead.Gameweek 12 is set to feature a full round of Premier League fixtures as well as the continuation of the European competitions in midweek, meaning double headers for Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, Aston Villa, Manchester United, Tottenham and Chelsea. We strong advise gaffers to pick a captain who is likely to play twice – let’s run through the strongest candidates.Dream Team’s leading point scorerCredit: ReutersDream Team bosses who have opted to double Mohamed Salah’s (£7.3m) points in recent weeks have gained ground on those who have remained loyal to Erling Haaland (£8.6m).Liverpool’s main man has matched or bettered the Norwegian poacher’s score for four consecutive Gameweeks. And there’s every chance he’ll extend that streak to five with Arne Slot’s side due to face 20th-placed Southampton this weekend. The Reds will then welcome Real Madrid to Anfield in midweek.Los Blancos are the kings of the Champions League as 15-time winners but they’ve already been beaten by Lille and Milan in this season’s competition – a trip to Merseyside comes at a bad time for Jude Bellingham and company.Haaland is capable of punishing his doubters but Man City’s form is a concernCredit: GettyAs for Haaland, he’s due to face Spurs and Feyenoord and could easily plunder plentiful points, especially with the North Londoners missing key defenders through injury. But it’s simply true that Pep Guardiola’s side are in a bad moment having lost four games on the spin. Most read in FootballSalah is seemingly the logical choice for Gameweek 12.Elsewhere, many gaffers will be tempted to stick the armband on Bruno Fernandes (£6.1m).The Red Devils’ skipper is both Dream Team’s most in-form player right now and the most popular recruit ahead of Gameweek 12’s deadline.Dream Team’s form manCredit: ReutersRuben Amorim’s first game in charge of Man United comes away to Ipswich, quickly followed by a Europa League meeting with plucky Norwegian outfit Bodo/Glimt at Old Trafford. All things considered, that’s a favourable double header for the former Sporting tactician and so there’s every chance Fernandes continues his fine form. The 30-year-old notched more points than any other player in Gameweek 11 and that alone makes him a viable captaincy option.Score PredictorPlay Score Predictor with Dream Team this season!FREE to play£250 weekly prizePredict scores of five selected Premier League fixtures and earn points for accuracyMost points wins weekly cash prizePLAY NOWSome gaffers will be tempted to captain Cole Palmer (£6.2m) now the Chelsea talisman is expected to be available for the Blues’ trip to Leicester on Saturday. However, please be aware that the reigning PFA Young Player of the Year will not feature against Heidenheim on Thursday night because he is not part of Chelsea’s Conference League for the league phase. In fact, Enzo Maresca tends to rotate pretty much his entire starting line-up for European games. That’s not to say Palmer isn’t capable of a big double-digit haul against the Foxes, he’s produced several such performances in the last year, but gaffers aiming to play the odds by targeting two fixtures in Gameweek 12 will have to look elsewhere.Saka is a doubt for Gameweek 12 at this stageBukayo Saka (£6.6m) is usually a relative popular captain but Arsenal’s No7 is an availability doubt at this stage.Plus, high-flying Nottingham Forest and Sporting CP is a deceptively tricky double header on current form.READ MORE SUN STORIESOther nominees to consider include Alejandro Garnacho (£4.1m), Luis Diaz (£4.6m) and Dominic Solanke (£4.3m) but it looks to be between Salah, Fernandes and Haaland for captain this time around.Elect your skipper for Gameweek 12 before Saturday’s 11:30am deadline.BetMGM sign up offerBetMGM: Get £40 in free bets — HERE**New cust only. 7 days to opt in by placing a £10 qualifying bet at 1/1 (2.0) odds or greater to receive 4x Free Bets: 1 x £10 horse racing, 1 x £10 Bet Builder, 1 x £10 Acca and 1 x £10 football. 7 day expiry.
