Liverpool suffer Sven Botman transfer blow with Lille ‘desperate to keep’ £40m-rated defender until at least the summer

LILLE defender Sven Botman is reportedly unlikely to join Liverpool this month.
The Reds are interested in signing a centre-back after Virgil van Dijk suffered a serious knee injury in October.

Netherlands Under-20 international Botman has been linked with a move to Anfield.
But Liverpool have not made contact with Lille, according to ESPN.
The French club are reportedly eager to retain his services until the end of the season.
It is claimed only an offer in the region of £40million would tempt Lille into selling.

Botman has cut an impressive figure for Lille following last summer’s transfer from Ajax.
LIVERPOOL VS MAN UTD: GET 40/1 ON A PENALTY FOR EITHER TEAM

How Liverpool have fared with and without Van Dijk since his debut in 2018 up to his injury against Everton
The 20-year-old has been a regular at the back for the Ligue 1 title hopefuls, making 25 appearances in all competitions.
Liverpool’s season has been disrupted by injuries to defenders.

Van Dijk has been out of action since suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury against Everton in the Merseyside derby.
Joe Gomez is expected to miss the bulk of the campaign after undergoing surgery on a tendon in his left knee in November.

Liverpool’s other senior defender, Joel Matip, picked up a groin injury in last month’s 1-1 draw with West Brom.
But there was some good news for Jurgen Klopp before Manchester United’s visit to Anfield as Matip returned to training.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Klopp said: “To bring him [in], I don’t know. We have to see, we have to decide, we have to look at him and how he will train, how he looks in training and these kind of things, but we have still different solutions.”

Jurgen Klopp admits Liverpool signing centre-back in transfer window ‘unlikely’ due to Covid-19 despite injury crisis

JURGEN KLOPP admitted it is ‘unlikely’ Liverpool will sign a centre-back this month, despite the injury crisis at the heart of his defence.
The Reds are without first-choice pairing Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez due to long-term injuries and stand-ins Fabinho and Joel Matip have struggled for form and fitness.

The Kop boss insisted he would ideally like to recruit but the financial impact of Covid-19 means any move in the current transfer window looks to be off the cards.
Klopp said: “I cannot say definitely we will not bring anyone in, it’s just not likely because of the situation in the world.
“We should not forget that the situation is a tough one for all people and for football clubs as well.
“There might be some clubs with absolutely no financial problems.

“But this club always was – and will always be with these owners – just very responsible with the things we do.”
Ex-Liverpool man Jamie Carragher said it was ‘paramount’ his former side bring in a centre-back in January and ‘inconceivable’ for them not to.
Otherwise, it could be down to youngsters Rhys Williams and Nathanial Phillips to operate in defence together – although Fabinho has filled in sublimely so far, especially with Matip currently out injured.

With Van Dijk and Gomez expected to be out for most of the remainder of the season, Liverpool know they would be charged a premium by any selling club this January.
The Premier League champions have been linked with a number of centre-backs since the major injuries.
Brighton ace Ben White, Ozan Kabak of Schalke and Atalanta man Roger Ibanez were all thought to be targets.
David Alaba was another name mentioned but he looks set to join Real Madrid on a free transfer from Bayern Munich at the end of the season.
Klopp continued: “If the world would be in a ‘normal’ place, everything would be fine.
“We won the league, won the Champions League, the club is in the best possible situation and then you have three senior centre-halves plus Fabinho plus kids, and the three senior centre-halves are all injured – is that a situation where usually we would do something? Yes, definitely.
“But we are not in that situation so I don’t know if something will happen or not.
“What I said about it, you maybe could do something but it would be a short-term solution – and we don’t have that short-term solution – but that’s not right because it doesn’t help really.
“Then we have to deal with the situation how we did it so far and have to get through this. It’s not the best moment for the whole planet, so why should it be for a football club?”

Liverpool in contract ‘stalemate’ with Georginio Wijnaldum amid Barcelona free transfer interest and talks ongoing

LIVERPOOL midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum is reportedly edging closer to an Anfield exit with contract talks said to have reached a stalemate.
The 30-year-old is free to talk to foreign clubs about a free transfer at the end of the season having entered the last six months of his deal on Merseyside.

Barcelona are known to be long-term admirers of the Holland international, with boss Ronald Koeman desperate to be reunited with him at the Nou Camp.
It was claimed last month that the ex-Newcastle ace asked the Reds for more time before deciding on his future amid interest from the Blaugrana.
And now Sky Sports have claimed that negotiations between the club and the player have reached a stalemate.
They state that the Premier League and Champions League winner has been presented with a new offer, but he is yet to sign it.

The report then adds that Wijnaldum is keen to remain at Liverpool, but wants his wages to reflect his importance in the team, and compare with the club’s top earners.
Should no breakthrough be made, Liverpool could decide to cash in on the former PSV star who has appeared in all 17 top-flight games this term.
Koeman signalled his intention to nab the player in November when he suggested that a future deal could be on the cards.
Speaking to Sport, he said: “He’s very good.

“But he’s playing for Liverpool. He could be an option in the future. I can’t say more.”
Inter Milan are also said to be keen on landing Wijnaldum as Antonio Conte looks to lure another player from England to Italy.
And it has even been claimed that Liverpool are eyeing up a replacement for the midfielder having tracked the development of Brighton’s Yves Bissouma.
ESPN have claimed that Jurgen Klopp is keeping tabs on the player who could cost in the region of £30million.

Arsenal join Liverpool in £35m Roger Ibanez transfer race as Mikel Arteta eyes up Roma defender

ARSENAL have reportedly joined Liverpool in the race for Roma defender Roger Ibanez.
The Brazilian centre-back is on loan from Atalanta and the Gunners are one of the clubs who have made a ‘request’ for the 22-year-old, according to Calciomercato.

Arsenal are reportedly in the running to sign Roger IbanezCredit: Rex Features

Everton and Leicester are the other clubs mentioned in the report.
Liverpool were previously linked with a move for Ibanez as Jurgen Klopp looks to strengthen his resources at the back with Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez both long-term absentees with serious knee injuries.
Joel Matip became the latest member of the champions’ squad to suffer an injury blow with the centre-back set to miss the top-of-the-table clash with Manchester United as he faces three weeks out with a groin problem.
Ibanez moved to the Italian capital in January 2020 and has started all but one of the side’s league games this season.

He has also starred in the Europa League for Paulo Fonseca’s team and caught the eye with his assured performances at the back.
It is believed it will take a fee in the region of £30-35million to prise him away from Serie A.
And the interested Premier League sides could also face competition from French giants Paris Saint-Germain who have also been linked with a move.
PSG are reportedly keen on Ibanez to fill the role of long-term successor to his compatriot Thiago Silva.

The veteran Brazilian defender, 36, left the Parc des Princes when his contract expired in the summer, joining Chelsea for free and has started his Stamford Bridge career well with a number of impressive showings under Frank Lampard.
Arsenal strengthened at centre-back by signing Gabriel Magalhaes from Lille for £27m in the summer but he is currently sidelined having tested positive for Covid-19.
A spot for Ibanez to fill is set to open up with the Gunners likely to offload Shkodran Mustafi as the German’s contract expires in the summer and he was even linked with a sensational January move to Barcelona.

Liverpool set to sign Ezequiel Garay on free transfer with Klopp also looking to land Real Madrid defender Eder Militao

LIVERPOOL are reportedly set to sign free agent Ezequiel Garay and are also interested in landing Real Madrid defender Eder Militao.
Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is desperate for defensive reinforcements after an Anfield injury crisis left Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez as long-term absentees with serious knee problems.

And Todofichajes.com reports Liverpool are ‘one step away’ from finalising a deal for former Valencia centre-back Garay, 34, with Klopp also keen on Brazilian Militao.
Garay has been without a club since leaving Valencia at the end of last season.
Previous reports suggest the Argentine’s agent had made contact with Liverpool chiefs over a potential deal.
Former Real Madrid and Benfica ace Garay would provide immediate experience to the depleted Liverpool backline.

But Militao is seen as a more permanent option in defence with the 22-year-old having struggled to settle at the Bernabeu.
Zinedine Zidane is reportedly not keen on Militao leaving in January as he wants the centre-back up his sleeve in case of any injuries or suspensions in his squad.
Militao only moved to the Spanish capital from Porto in a £45million deal in 2019 but has played just 134 minutes in LaLiga this season.
However, the report states a move away could be given the green light if Madrid sign experienced Bayern Munich star David Alaba.

Both Manchester United and Chelsea have been linked with the 28-year-old Austrian who is set to leave the Allianz Arena with his contract up in the summer.
Fabinho has often had to play in the heart of defence for Liverpool who top the league despite being blighted by injury.
The reigning champions have had to contend with crucial players such as Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alisson and versatile James Milner all spending time on the sidelines.
However, there has been some good news for Klopp after Milner, Thiago and Xherdan Shaqiri were all back in training ahead of Sunday’s game at home to West Brom.

Liverpool eye Sven Botman transfer from Lille as Jurgen Klopp adds defender to long list of Van Dijk replacements

LIVERPOOL are reportedly eyeing Lille defender Sven Botman as a replacement for Virgil van Dijk.
The Reds are in the market for a centre-back in the New Year following the Dutchman’s ACL injury he suffered back in October.

Jurgen Klopp is hoping the defender, 29, returns before the end of the season, though he could well miss the remainder of the campaign.
And French outlet Foot Mercato claim Liverpool’s reinforcement could come in the shape of Van Dijk’s compatriot Botman.
The report adds that the Merseysiders contacted his agent last month and are set to rival Inter Milan for his signature.
According to Get French Football News, talks between Liverpool and the 20-year-old have not advanced past simple contact.

Lille are said to have slapped a £45million valuation on Botman, but both outlets claim they could be tempted into accepting a £27m offer due to the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
The former Ajax star has cemented his spot at the Ligue 1 side this season, making 22 appearances so far this season to help them to top of the table.
Liverpool are already thought to be in discussions with Lille over another of their players, Renato Sanches, following reports the two clubs have agreed an £18m deal.
The midfielder flopped in the Premier League at Swansea on a season-long loan from Bayern Munich but has since revitalised his career in France.

But bringing in a new centre-back will most likely remain a priority following long-term injuries to both van Dijk and Joe Gomez.
SunSport previously reported that the Reds had a £19m bid for Sporting Lisbon’s 18-year-old starlet Nuno Mendes.
And another of the club’s targets Perr Schuurs recently dealt Klopp a blow – by pledging his immediate future to Ajax.

Liverpool see £19m bid for Man Utd transfer target Nuno Mendes rejected as Sporting race to add £63m release clause

LIVERPOOL are still interested in Sporting Lisbon starlet Nuno Mendes, according to reports.
The Reds have reportedly seen a £19million offer for the 18-year-old rejected, with Sporting now keen to increase the left-back’s release clause from £40m to £60m.

Mendes looks set to sign a new contract at Sporting despite ‘concrete’ interest from Liverpool

Mendes only signed a new contract at the Estadio Jose Alvalade in June, but Sporting are keen to renew his terms again amid interest from a host of other clubs.
Correio da Manha claims Mendes has agreed to an extension, despite some initial hesitancy, and the deal will triple his £13k-a-week wages.
The youngster’s current deal runs until 2025.
Portuguese outlets Record and O Jogo claim Liverpool’s interest in the player is ‘concrete’ despite them not having any immediate need for a new left-back.

The Premier League champions signed Kostas Tsimikas as cover for first-choice Andy Robertson in the summer, although the Greek defender is currently sidelined with a knee injury.
However, at 6ft tall, it is thought Mendes’ future could lie in the centre of defence.
Injuries to first-choice centre-backs Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez have left Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp short of options at the back.
Arsenal, Manchester United, Leicester City and Real Madrid have also been linked with a move for Mendes.

How Liverpool have fared with and without Van Dijk since his debut in 2018 up to his injury against Everton

Mendes has been with Sporting since the age of 10, and made his senior debut in June.
The Portugal under-21 international has established himself as the club’s first-choice left-back this season, making 13 appearances in all competitions for Sporting this season, scoring once.
In doing so, he became the Lions’ third-youngest ever goalscorer, after Cristiano Ronaldo and Ricardo Quaresma.

Koulibaly or Upamecano not realistic so Liverpool shouldn’t sign Van Dijk replacement in January, claims John Barnes

JOHN BARNES has stated Liverpool should avoid looking to sign a replacement for Virgil van Dijk as their top two targets are not realistic options.
The Reds are in the market for a centre-back in the New Year following the Dutchman’s ACL injury he suffered in the 2-2 draw against Everton in October.

John Barnes believes the Reds have no hope of bringing Dayot Upamecano to Anfield next monthCredit: Reuters

The Premier League leaders are hoping the defender, 29, returns before the end of the season, though he could well miss the remainder of the campaign.
Jurgen Klopp has spoken of Van Dijk’s horror injury where he revealed that his knee ‘doesn’t look like how a knee should’.
Liverpool have since been linked with Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly as well as RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano, but Barnes has stated the Merseyside outfit have no chance of signing them.
Speaking to BonusCodeBets, he said: “If they can get better than what they have, yes [they should buy another centre-back].

“But if they can’t get better, there’s no point in buying for the sake of buying.
“The majority of centre-backs you would want are normally playing at top teams in the Champions League and may not be available.
“So, it’s not a question of looking to buy anybody, because he [Jurgen Klopp] has faith in the youngsters that he’s played.
“If they can get somebody who they feel will improve them, that is obviously a priority, but not just for the sake of it.

How Virgil van Dijk compares to the rest of the PL’s defenders
“Koulibaly – he’s not coming. It would be great if we could have him, but it depends on who you can get.
“RB Leipzig are still in the Champions League and will be playing against Liverpool so [Upemecano] is not going to come.
“It would be great to have him, or Koulibaly and other players, but you have to be realistic about who you can actually get.
“I don’t know anybody out there who is going to be a stopgap – and realistically isn’t going to be a great player. So, Klopp will have to have faith in the squad.”
Liverpool have most recently been linked with a move to bring Inter Milan ace Stefan de Vrij to Anfield next month.
