Liverpool could have to fork out £40m on Ibrahima Konate transfer as RB Leipzig defender’s release clause is revealed

LIVERPOOL remain poised to sign RB Leipzig defender Ibrahima Konate despite the revelation that his release clause is £40million.The 21-year-old Frenchman has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield over the past few months.

But The Telegraph are reporting that the buyout clause in his contract means the Reds will have to stump up £40m if they are to complete the deal.
This could potentially prove difficult for Jurgen Klopp’s side following the announcement on Tuesday that Liverpool posted a pre-tax loss of £46million in the year up until May 2020.
The absence of fans due to the coronavirus pandemic has meant Premier League clubs have not received any revenue from the gate.
As a result, managers could find their hands tied when it comes to funds for transfers at the end of the season.
However, The Mail believe Liverpool’s owners Fenway Sports Group are set to continue to invest in the team despite Covid’s financial impact.
And high up on the list of priorities for the club’s summer dealings is to secure the impressive prospect Konate on a long-term contract.
The centre-back has only featured 19 times in all competitions for Leipzig so far this season due to an ankle injury that kept him out for six weeks.
His central defensive partner Dayot Upamecano has already completed his move away from the German side at the end of the season as he prepares to join domestic rivals Bayern Munich.

Liverpool boast the most-valuable squad in the Premier League
Meanwhile, Liverpool are keen to address the problems they have faced in their back line throughout the 2020-21 campaign.
Long-term injuries to Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez led to midfielders Jordan Henderson and Fabinho being forced to fill in at the heart of their defence.
The signing of Ozan Kabak and promotion of Nathaniel Phillips to the first team has calmed that issue somewhat, but Klopp will still be looking for some more stable cover for next season.
Liverpool currently look set to miss out on the top four in the Premier League as they sit four points outside the Champions League places with just five games remaining.

Liverpool transfer blow as RB Leipzig defender Ibrahima Konate signals intention to stay with Germans until summer 2023

LIVERPOOL transfer target Ibrahima Konate has declared his intention to stay at RB Leipzig beyond the end of the season. The 21-year-old youngster has been heavily linked with a move to Merseyside this summer after impressing in the Bundesliga.
Konate looks set to stay put in Germany this summerCredit: AFP
But in a recent interview the centre-back appeared to quash any speculation he could be on his way out of Leipzig in the near future.
Speaking to BILD, he said: “There are often rumours in football and many believe them immediately.
“I or my agents did not get a call from Liverpool. I also have big goals with RB Leipzig.
“These are currently the best possible result in the Bundesliga, reaching the cup final and the Under-21 European Championship with France.
“I have a contract until 2023 and contracts are there to fulfil them.”
Konate has featured just 18 times for Leipzig this season after suffering an ankle injury which kept him out for six weeks over the Christmas period.
But when he has played he has produced solid displays for the German side and helped them to second in the Bundesliga table, four points off leaders Bayern Munich.
Konate’s central defensive partner Dayot Upamecano has already confirmed he is joining Bayern in the summer.

How Virgil van Dijk compares to the rest of the PL’s defenders
The £37million deal was confirmed by the German champions back in February.
Meanwhile, Liverpool’s defensive problems have been a well-documented issue throughout this season.
They suffered the long-term injury blow of Virgil van Dijk and shortly after also saw Joe Gomez ruled out for an extended period of time.
Joel Matip has also been plagued with fitness issues, leading to midfielders Fabinho and Jordan Henderson filling in at the back, before the Reds signed Ozan Kabak in the January window.
They have also been helped by the emergence of Nathaniel Phillips.
However, Jurgen Klopp will still almost certainly want to strengthen before the start of the new season.
Liverpool were knocked out of the Champions League in the quarter-finals by Real Madrid earlier this week.

Luis Suarez ‘could seal shock Liverpool transfer return in summer over frustrations with Simeone’s Atletico tactics’

LUIS SUAREZ could make a shock return to Liverpool, according to reports. The Atletico Madrid forward, 34, is understood to be frustrated with Diego Simeone’s tactics.

Spanish outlet Todofichajes state the pair have a ‘difficult’ relationship which could result in the striker leaving – with a clause in his contract enabling him to leave this summer with no penalty.
And the report adds Suarez could be open to a transfer back to Liverpool, seven years after leaving Anfield for Barcelona.
However, David Beckham’s Inter Miami could be another potential suitor with an MLS swansong an option.
After 198 goals in 283 appearances for the Catalan giants, he left in acrimonious circumstances last summer.
The four-time LaLiga winner signed for Atletico on a two-year, £5.5million deal and hit the ground running.
He has 19 goals this season as Simeone’s side sit top of the table and he chases the golden boot.
But the high-pressing, energetic style means Suarez feels ‘physically drained’ and looking for a move away from the Wanda Metropolitano.
He picked up an injury during training on Wednesday with the club not providing a time scale on his absence – although he will surely do everything he can to be fit to face Barca in a crunch clash on May 9.

While intermediaries familiar with the club are said to believe that a big-money exit may no longer be out of the question.
Salah, 28, has excelled in each of his four years with Liverpool, even netting 18 league goals during this season’s failed title defence.
The Reds are not beleived to be concerned over his immediate future, with the Egyptian under contract until 2023.
But failure to qualify for next season’s Champions League could hasten a shake-up.
Jurgen Klopp’s side pulled within two points of the top-four by beating Arsenal on Saturday, capitalising on Chelsea’s shock home thrashing at the hands of West Brom.
Salah scored in between Diogo Jota’s brace in the 3-0 win, securing back-to-back wins for the defending champions after a horror start to 2021.
Winning the Champions League itself is still a possibility and Real Madrid welcome the side to the Spanish capital for the first leg of their quarter-final tie on Tuesday.

Both Madrid and Barcelona have been linked with a bid of around £100m for his services.
And, ahead of the game, the player refused to rule out a future move to LaLiga.
Salah told Marca: “It is not up to me. We’ll see what happens but I prefer not to talk about this now.”
He added: “I hope I can play football for many, many years.

Erling Haaland transfer boost for Chelsea, Liverpool and Man City as Dortmund’s Champions League hopes hit by loss

ERLING HAALAND’S future at Borussia Dortmund was put further in doubt on Saturday as his side fell further behind in pursuit of a Champions League place.Eintracht Frankfurt struck three minutes from time to hand Dortmund a tenth Bundesliga defeat of the season, going down 2-1 at home.

The result leaves Haaland and co seven points adrift of Frankfurt, who occupy the all-important fourth Champions League qualification place.
Dortmund’s domestic struggles have arisen despite Haaland’s truly sensational campaign.
The Norwegian has scored 33 goals in 32 games so far this season, 21 of which have come in the Bundesliga.
The best route now for Dortmund to get into the Champions League next season may well be to win the competition.
The German side have progressed through to the last eight but face the ominous task of taking on Pep Guardiola’s ruthless Manchester City side.
Dortmund have not reached the last four of Europe’s premier competition since they made it to the final in 2013 when they were beaten by Bayern Munich.
Meanwhile, speculation surrounding Haaland continues to rumble on.
And those rumours around the 20-year-old’s future took another twist this week as his father Alf-Inge and agent Mino Raiola travelled to Spain to meet both Barcelona and Real Madrid.

A number of Premier League clubs are also being linked with Haaland.
Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool have all been touted as possible destinations for him at the end of the season and it was reported Raiola met with the English sides on Friday.
But the German club have set their price at £135million, with Haaland’s release clause of £65m not coming into play until next summer.

Erling Haaland’s agent set to fly to England TODAY for transfer talks with Chelsea, City and Liverpool – but NOT Man Utd

ERLING HAALAND’S agent Mino Raiola is set to fly to England TODAY for transfer talks with Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool but NOT Manchester United. The super agent was spotted flying into Barcelona and Madrid alongside the player’s father Alfe-Inge Haaland on Thursday to hold talks with the El Clasico sides.

Super agent Mino Raiola was papped arriving at an airport in Barcelona
Haaland’s dad Alf-Inge accompanied the super agent on the trip
And it was reported that a further three interested teams were due to begin negotiations around a potential deal for Borussia Dortmund’s prized asset.
The Mail reports Raiola and Haaland senior will arrive in England to hold talks with multiple Premier League giants.
Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool are expected to welcome the pair but SunSport understands United will not meet with Haaland’s agent, who also represents Paul Pogba.
However, the Red Devils are waiting in the wings and keeping tabs on his situation.
The Norwegian has a £65million release clause in his Dortmund contract but it cannot be activated until the end of next season.
And after bagging an incredible 33 goals in just 31 games in all competitions this season – many clubs are not prepared to wait for a chance to secure his services.
The 20-year-old has become arguably the hottest property in world football and Dortmund will demand around £150m for him this summer.
But the Bundesliga side are reluctant to sell their star man with Dortmund’s sporting director Michael Zorc revealing he has told Raiola they are planning for the long-term future with Haaland in mind.

Man Utd’s biggest transfers ever, both in and out, including Ronaldo

On Thuesday, Zorc told Sky Germany: “I spoke to Raiola yesterday (Wednesday). We made our intention clear.
“We plan for the long term with Erling. [Rumours] do not have to be dealt with at all. I can see him with us for a long time.”
Manchester City have been installed by many as Haaland’s most likely destination after dad Alf-Inge played for Citizens from 2000 to 2003.
But Pep Guardiola dashed hopes of a mega money move – which SunSport revealed could cost a total of £300m – to replace the departing Sergio Aguero.
In his Friday press conference, the Spanish boss said: “With these prices we will not buy any striker. It’s impossible. We will not afford it. All the clubs struggle. We are not an exception.
“I don’t know what is going to happen. Today, there is more chance we will not buy a striker next season.”
Chelsea have been linked with Haaland and Aguero but Thomas Tuchel remained coy when talking about players at other clubs.

The unbeaten German boss said: “Same answer as for Haaland. We have full respect for Man City.
“There is no words needed, he’s a world-class player. But we have three competitions in which we are in with City so I won’t speak about their players.”
United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer worked with compatriot Haaland at Molde but insisted it is up to the youngster to make his own mind up about where he heads next.
He said: “Even though I worked with Erling it’s not right for me as Manchester United manager to talk about Erling, he will make his own mind up.
“I’m focusing on the next two months and whatever happens in the world of football there is only so many places anyone can go to and I just, focus on the ones who are here.”
Haaland only joined Dortmund from RB Salzburg in January 2020 but with 49 goals in as many games he has certainly caught the eye of Europe’s top sides.

And while Diogo Jota has come in this season to freshen things up in an attacking sense, the Reds are thought to be seeking more options in the transfer window.
According to Marca, Liverpool are considering a bid for Depay, who has impressed since joining Lyon in 2017.
In 169 appearances for the French side, he has scored 69 times and provided a further 52 assists.
And with his contract coming to an end this summer, Klopp’s men could be poised to land him on a free transfer.
Depay left the Premier League for Lyon after a disappointing spell with Man Utd.
The Dutchman netted just seven times in 53 games for the Red Devils before being offloaded by Jose Mourinho just 18 months after he had signed.

A number of teams are said to still be in the running for his signature with no transfer announced yet.
But Leipzig’s chances of keeping Konate appear to be dwindling amid the latest reports from the Bundesliga club.
According to Sky Germany, he is growing increasingly dissatisfied with being stuck on the bench.
Not since December has the Frenchman started a game for Leipzig and he watched both defeats to Liverpool in their recent Champions League encounter as a substitute.
Ankle and muscle injuries have hampered Konate’s availability this season but he returned to fitness in February, only to see 40 minutes of action since.
Last month, The Athletic reported on Liverpool nearing a deal to sign the 21-year-old.

Medical checks are said to be already underway but RMC Sport indicate that Konate’s camp remains cautious over the switch.
Manchester United and Chelsea have also been linked with the centre-back as they look to bolster their defence for next season.
Although is Liverpool, currently without Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip, who have struggled most at the back.
Konate has asserted that he is remaining focused on his football amid the reports, recently stating: “I woke up, I saw my phone ringing all over the place.
