Brighton 4 Tottenham 2: Postecoglou’s makeshift XI thumped by Seagulls as Kulusevski joins long list of absentees

PERVIS ESTUPINAN has had a long, old wait to get back to the game he loves… but with goals like this, perhaps it was worth it.The Ecuadorian full-back had been out since September with a thigh problem – save for a 12-minute appearance against Ajax in November which ended up setting him back – before last night’s stellar showing against Spurs.

His comeback probably happened even sooner than expected as he came on at half-time for Igor Julio due to a suspected injury.
But the rampaging full-back and fantasy football darling was not about to let the opportunity pass him by, even with Brighton already 2-0 up thanks to Jack Hinshelwood’s blast and a Joao Pedro penalty.
And on 63 minutes, he gave the Amex crowd something to remember as he took aim from 25 yards and guided an explosive missile of a shot into the top corner.
Helpless Spurs stopper Guglielmo Vicario was left clutching the same thin air into which his boss Ange Postecoglou had seen his side’s last remaining hope for this game evaporate.
When Pedro struck his second spot-kick of the game after Gio Lo Celso’s silly tackle on Evan Ferguson, Postecoglou was staring down his worst defeat as Spurs boss.
Prior to that it had been the 4-1 home implosion against Chelsea, but unlike that day, the Aussie could not blame two red cards for his side’s failings.
In the end his team did beat that scoreline when Ben Davies headed home, after sub Alejo Veliz had grabbed one back late on for his first goal for the club.
But the young Argentine’s personal joy did not mask what was a horror show for his side as a whole – save for a late rally – and one that dented their top-four hopes.

Both teams had nine players injured and while that was very noticeable with slack-looking Spurs, you would never have known it with Brighton given how fresh they seemed.
Roberto De Zerbi’s side completely dominated their opponents for 81 minutes that resembled the Seagulls at their fast-paced, one-touch best during the Italian’s reign.
It was only the rock-solid presence of Vicario that prevented the opener coming quicker than it did.
The Italy international, whose £16million fee from his summer transfer from Empoli is looking more of a snip with each passing game, denied Danny Welbeck twice in quick succession from close range.
Yet there was nothing Hugo Lloris’ successor could do about the thunderous strike that broke the deadlock.
It came from the foot of young Hinshelwood, who had been picked out by Pedro on the right-side of the box and crashed the ball into the roof of the net.
On 20 minutes, Jan Paul van Hecke headed against Pascal Gross’ corner against the post as the pressure grew.
In the aftermath all of Brighton’s attacking players were screaming for a penalty for Dejan Kulusevski’s tug-back on Welbeck as the Albion striker went to volley the loose ball.

Estupinan’s strike cannoned past Guglielmo VicarioCredit: Reuters
Referee Jarred Gillett played on but when eventually there was a pause in play, VAR told him to go to his pitchside monitor to have another look.
Pedro was so confident the spot-kick would be given that he stood on the penalty spot, clutching the ball, waiting for the inevitable decision which promptly came.
The Brazil striker was even cooler as he sent Vicario the wrong way for number two.
While Kulusevski received his fifth yellow of the season for the initial offence, meaning he will be suspended for the New Years’ Eve hosting of Bournemouth.
Even James Milner, who turns 38 next week, was getting in on the attacking action as he curled against the post from distance, leaving a full-stretch Vicario well-beaten.
The fabulous football kept on coming from the hosts who had the ball in the net again thanks to a tasty half-volley from Facundo Buonanotte – but he was offside.
Tottenham’s disastrous half threatened to get worse when Pedro Porro’s sloppy backpass was pounced on by namesake Pedro, though Vicario managed to flick his chip just wide.
Spurs knew they could not get much worse and returned after the break hoping to show a new face, with Kulusevski seemingly showing his intent by ditching the mask protecting his broken nose.
Richarlison had two goals chalked off for offside in a brief revival which was extinguished when the returning Estupinan took centre stage with his howitzer from range.
Three became four when Lo Celso took out fellow sub Ferguson from behind and Pedro did the honours.
Yet Postecoglou is not a man for giving up and there was the faintest, microscopic glimmer of hope when Veliz squirmed the ball home with nine minutes to go.
That turned into a genuine belief when Davies headed home Porro’s cross four minutes later.
The Amex grew nervous as nine minutes of injury time were awarded and Pedro roared the crowd to power his team home in the dying minutes.
Amazingly, there was still time for Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg to fire against a post.
Porro came in for the rebound but was repelled by a block from who else but Estupinan, not to be denied his well-earned day.

Arsenal’s title credentials brought into doubt
Many have asked whether The Gunners can one step further than they did last season.
After spending over £200m in the summer on transfers, this game left more questions than answers.
Arteta’s side showed no penetration and were all possession but could not make it count for anything.
The lack of quality he had to bring off the bench to try and change the game told its own story.

Moyes gets first win at Arsenal
This was David Moyes’ first win away against Arsenal as a manager.
He knew what threat he was facing today and he set his side out perfectly to cope with Mikel Arteta’s side.
Despite dominating possession and having a number of shots at goal, mostly blocked by West Ham players, the visitors full deserved their win at The Emirates this evening.

    FT: Arsenal 0-2 West Ham
Kudus has been a great signing for David Moyes’ side.
He works up and down the flank and is not afraid to defend.
Linking well with Bowen and Paqueta, he is proving to be a real star for The Hammers.

    FT: Arsenal 0-2 West Ham
Arsenal just could not get the better of West Ham tonight.
Once the visitors took the lead, they had the upper hand and never looked like giving it up.
West Ham are now on 33 points, their highest ever return at the halfway stage of a Premier League season.

    FT: Arsenal 0-2 West Ham
The referee brings the game to a close.
Declan Rice gave away a late penalty but Benrahma’s strike was well saved by Raya.
It won’t matter to David Moyes’ side, this is a huge win.

Time is running out for Mikel Arteta’s side.
Bowen picks it up on the halfway line and feeds it to Emerson.
    Arsenal 0-2 West Ham
90+2. You can guarantee Arteta will have a whinge about his side being robbed again by a goal when the ball was clearly out.
The bottom line is that it was anything but clear, which is why VAR could not overrule the onfield decision of a goal.
Arsenal launch a series of crosses into the box but West Ham deal with them well.
    Arsenal 0-2 West Ham
    90. A corner is half cleared by West Ham.
Nketiah tries and overhead kick but it is an easy save for Areola.
Bold effort by the Arsenal striker.

    86. The ball breaks to Smith-Rowe on the edge of the box.
He tries an effort at goal but Areola makes a routine save.
Arsenal fans leave in their droves, as they always do, never showing confidence in their team when the chips are down.
    Arsenal 0-2 West Ham
    84. VAR reviewed and incident and agrees it is not penalty.
In those instances, they should be allowed to instruct the referee to show them a yellow card for diving.
It certainly would stop Saka doing it for the rest of this game.
    Arsenal 0-2 West Ham
    82. Saka cuts in from the right and runs into the box and goes down looking for a penalty.
The referee decides that it is not a penalty.
It is a blatant dive by ‘the boy who cries wolf’ and he should be booked for that.
    Arsenal 0-2 West Ham
    80. Trossard comes off for Smith-Rowe.
One thing is for sure, the former Brighton man is definitely not a centre midfielder.
He has been more like an anarchist hacker tonight…..anonymous.

    Arsenal 0-2 West Ham
    78. Nketiah is coming deep looking for the ball often.
The problem is with this, he is nowhere near the goal to cause any problems for the visitors.
It looks like Emile Smith-Rowe is about to join the action.
Saka gets a shot away but it is an easy save for Areola.
    Arsenal 0-2 West Ham

    Arsenal 0-2 West Ham
    72. Nelson is booked for a foul on Soucek.
Benrahma gets down the right and bundles his way into the box.
The ball breaks to him and he looks to get a shot off at goal but it is well blocked.
    Arsenal 0-2 West Ham
    70. Jesus wins the ball in the corner and as he touches the ball away, Kudus takes his standing leg away.
It gives the hosts to get a ball into the box to test West Ham.
The centre backs pile forward but Nelson’s delivery is terrible and it goes straight out for a goal kick.
Arsenal’s fans start to boo their own team, stay classy North London.

    Arsenal 0-2 West Ham
    68. Gabriel Jesus seems to have his eyes closed when he heads it.
That would answer a lot of questions about his poor finishing.
Two massive chances for the Arsenal attacker wasted in as many minutes.
    Arsenal 0-2 West Ham
    66. Brilliant inswinging cross by Bukayo Saka.
He picks out Jesus in the middle of the goal and the Brazilian can only head straight at Areola.
You have to be scoring from there.
Arsenal come forward once again and White lifts one up to the back post.
It finds Jesus again who heads over.
    Terrible.
    Arsenal 0-2 West Ham
    64. Odegaard plays the ball to Saka out wide.
He looks to cross but it takes a huge deflection off the defender.
Areola manages to gather to prevent the corner.
Martinelli and Zinchenko are replaced by Nelson and Nketiah.
    Arsenal 0-2 West Ham
    62. The fans are getting frustrated by the lack of urgency in Mikel Arteta’s side.
Saka eats turf once again but no foul.
Fair play, The Gunners’ winger spends more time on the grass than most rabbits.
    Arsenal 0-2 West Ham
    60. The last time West Ham scored two goals at The Emirates was when the last won here in 2016.
Rice gives the ball away to Kudus who looks for Coufal.
Martinelli gets back to challenge at the expense of a throw in.

Palace miss chance to upset The Blues
Crystal Palace will have not expected to control the game at Stamford Bridge for such large periods as they did.
Roy Hodgson will be frustrated that during those phases of play they could not get the goal he will have felt they deserved.
Eventually, they were downed by a sucker punch as Chelsea were awarded a late penalty and leave West London with nothing to show for their performance.
Chelsea secure important win in derby
The performance was not inspiring by any stretch of the imagination but this was a crucial three points for The Blues.
It moves them up into the top half of the table, still with a lot of ground to make up on the top six.
The Chelsea fans leave Stamford Bridge a little happier, courtesy of a Christmas gift from Eze as his foul led to the awarding of the penalty.
    Gusto blows away Palace charge
Malo Gusto got forward to offer options when ever Chelsea came forward.
With Raheem Sterling suspended his energy is getting up and down the line caused the visitors problems.
He was integral in the first goal and managed to keep Ayew quiet for most of the game.
Man of the match performance from the young French full back.

    FT: Chelsea 2-1 Crystal Palace
Chelsea celebrate showing how much these three points mean to the home side.
It papers over the cracks for Mauricio Pochettino, they were far from convincing in this game.
Nevertheless is relieves some of the pressure on the Chelsea manager.

    FT: Chelsea 2-1 Crystal Palace
The referee brings the game to a close.
Chelsea take the three points but it was by no means a good performance from The Blues.
A rash challenge from Eberechi Eze gifted the hosts a penalty to win the game.
    Chelsea 2-1 Crystal Palace
90+8. Madueke breaks for Chelsea and slots Jackson in.
He looks to hold the ball up, running the clock down, but the flag goes up for offside.
Palace counter and Olise looks to get a cross into the box but it is too deep and runs harmlessly out for a goal kick.
    Chelsea 2-1 Crystal Palace
90+6. Eze and Olise combine well and the winger drills a left-footed shot at goal.
Petrovic gets down well to save and hold onto the ball.
The referee books both Pochettino and Gallagher with the visitors pressing now.
    Chelsea 2-1 Crystal Palace
90+4. Disasi is fouled in the corner and the referee awards Chelsea a free kick.
The defender is fist pumping the air on the ground which says a lot about where this Chelsea team is at right now.
Gilchrist has come on for the hosts to try and see this game out.
    Credit: Reuters
    Chelsea 2-1 Crystal Palace
90+2. We are going to have eight additional minutes added.
Plenty of time for the visitors to try and find a goal.
Roy Hodgson will feel his side have done enough in this game to come away from Stamford Bridge with at least a point.
    Chelsea 2-1 Crystal Palace
    90. Madueke sends Henderson the wrong way and calming strokes the ball into the back of the net.
Crystal Palace have no arguments the challenge by Eze on Madueke was a definite penalty.
A real striker’s challenge from the Palace player.
    Goal – Noni Madueke (Chelsea)
    Penalty to Chelsea
    Chelsea 1-1 Crystal Palace
    86. Broja is found in the box again, he tries to take it past Andersen but the defender does well.
Palace counter attack and have numbers but Olise loses the ball in the penalty area.
Madueke is still down in the Palace penalty area, VAR will check to see whether Chelsea should have a penalty.
    Chelsea 1-1 Crystal Palace
    84. Silva goes long again with a pass from defence.
He picks out Broja perfectly who controls the ball and gets a shot away.
It nestles into the side netting.
He really should be working the keeper from there at the very least.
    Chelsea 1-1 Crystal Palace
    82. Silva makes a mistake and Palace break with Schlupp.
He finds Olise in the shot, whose shot is blocked but he gets another chance but Petrovic makes the save.
Crystal Palace are trying to find a second goal late on in this game.
    Chelsea 1-1 Crystal Palace
    80. Well that celebration by Jackson was short-lived.
Looking at the replay it was a fairly easy decision to make, you wonder why VAR takes so long to make their decision.
On the balance of play, Crystal Palace do not deserve to be behind in this game.
    Credit: AFP
    Goal disallowed – Offside
    Chelsea 2-1 Crystal Palace
    78. Thiago Silva lifts a cross into the box and Jackson slots home with a first time shot.
VAR is reviewing it, he may have been offside as the ball was played in.
This could be a huge decision as Stockley Park draw the lines.
    Goal – Nicolas Jackson (Chelsea)
    Chelsea 1-1 Crystal Palace
    74. Madueke breaks with pace and is fouled by Richards.
The referee has no choice but to produce a card but pulls the red one out of his pocket by mistake.
Gallagher plays Jackson through on goal, he has to score you think but the striker lifts it wide of the goal.
    Huge chance wasted.
    Chelsea 1-1 Crystal Palace
    72. Broja goes down under the challenge of Guehi.
He needs to show more strength in the challenge, this Palace defence are physical and are happy to get stuck in.
Am not sure Henderson has touched the ball for Palace in this half.
    Chelsea 1-1 Crystal Palace
    70. If Pochettino’s vision is to create a side with no penetration or creative threat in the final third, things are going according to plan.
You feel that Roy Hodgson’s side need to get a goal to capitalise on how poor the hosts have been in this second half.
Mudryk is down on the far side as he went down under the challenge of Clyne.
Nkunku and Mudryk come off for Broja and Madueke.
    Chelsea 1-1 Crystal Palace
    68. Lavia picks the ball up in his own half and tries to play a direct pass forward.
Only he knows who he was trying to pass that to but it runs out of play for a Crystal Palace throw in.
Ayew twists and turns in the Chelsea box and gets a cross in but it is hacked clear by Lavia.
    Credit: Reuters
    Chelsea 1-1 Crystal Palace
    66. Olise picks the ball up on the edge of his own box and skips past Lavia with ease.
He fouls the Palace man to stop him in his tracks.
Chelsea should have asked for some creativity for Christmas.
    Chelsea 1-1 Crystal Palace
    64. With Caicedo and Lavia in the middle of the park, Chelsea have £170m worth of talent.
They do not look any more solid for it though.
Chelsea start to knock the ball around but just cannot find that killer pass and Palace clear with ease all too often. More

Brentford 1 Wolves 4: Nathan Collins gifts former side two goals as Bees slip closer to relegation zone

NATHAN COLLINS endured a nightmare reunion with Wolves gifting his old club TWO goals as Brentford slipped closer to the relegation fight.Brentford’s club record signing, who joined in a £22million deal from Molineux last summer, made a complete hash of his return from injury.

Nathan Collins had a night to forget against his old teamCredit: Getty

Bees fans would have been delighted to see the defender back having been absent since November, but his former teammates were even happier by the end.
Collins handed Gary O’Neil’s men a goal in each half, looking like a prime playmaker by setting up Hwang Hee-Chan’s second strike and playing his part Jean-Ricner Bellegarde’s late finish.
Mario Lemina had opened the scoring in a chaotic first half in which Yoane Wissa grabbed Brentford’s only goal.
A fourth straight defeat leaves Thomas Frank’s depleted side just four points off the bottom three after five losses in their last six.
Frank was hoping he had “nailed it” when switching to a back four to try and cope with their shortages.
But most Bees fans will be praying that, just like their in-laws, they won’t see this shape until at least next Christmas.
The Bees boss had called for a fast start but his side were sloppy from the off.
Vitaly Janelt almost put Hwang’s low cross into his own net from just yards out, sparking three frantic minutes.

The Bees failed to clear the resulting corner and ended up shipping a cheap opener, leaving Lemina unmarked at the back post to make it two goals in two games with his header from Pablo Sarabia’s cross.
If the opener was cheap, the second just 80 seconds later was a disaster.
Collins went to play a simple pass back to his keeper, Mark Flekken, but did not put enough on the pass, allowing Hwang to steal in, round the goalie and collect his easiest goal of the season.
Brentford hit back almost immediately – bagging the third goal in three minutes as Wissa fired home from Neal Maupay’s smart ball over the top.
It brought instant relief and a shot of hope to a Brentford side short on confidence after their recent run of five defeats in their last six.
That feeling didn’t last long though.
Having almost got level when Janelt drew a good stop from Jose Sa from six yards, it wasn’t long before the Bees were trudging back to halfway once again.
And it was another goal Collins would not want to see back.
The defender sent a clearance up towards Wissa, who stood and waited for it to fall allowing Toti to nip in front and crash a header forwards.
Toti’s clearance fell to Hwang, who quickly spun and left Ethan Pinnock in a spin with a wonderful flick before restoring the two goal cushion with a clinical finish.
It was the finish of a striker in form and bursting with confidence, just the sort this Brentford side are missing with Ivan Toney still suspended.
A clinical striker is like gold dust in the Premier League, which made it all the harder for Wolves fans to watch Hwang hobble off with a back injury just before the break.
Brentford were much improved after a talking to, with Keane Lewis-Potter twice testing Sa and delivering a number of dangerous crosses which were not attacked by teammates – another shortfall Toney would address.
He won’t help out at the back, though, where Collins was still having a shocker.
With the game petering out, the 22-year-old decided to offer up some more entertainment by rolling another daft ball into the path of Matheus Cunha who raced forward and selflessly teed up Bellegarde to round off a perfect night for Wolves.
