Newcastle 4 West Ham 3: Barnes stunner completes comeback for injury-hit Toon as Moyes fumes over controversial penalty

KALVIN PHILLIPS is well on his way to becoming the worst loan signing in Prem history. And if his Euros hopes weren’t up in smoke before, there’s no way Gareth Southgate will touch him now. Kalvin Phillips gave away a vital penaltyCredit: GettyWest Ham were 3-1 up and cruising at St James’ Park against a shambles of a Newcastle side. David Moyes then brought Phillips on with 20 minutes to go, and they disintegrated. Supersub Harvey Barnes was the Magpies hero, bagging two late goals to complete a sensational turnaround. But it was only possible thanks to Phillips. On loan from Manchester City, he’s had a disaster since joining the Hammers in January, Yet nothing compares to this horror show. He first gave away a penalty on Anthony Gordon, with Alexander Isak scoring his second spot-kick of the afternoon to make it 3-2. Barnes then converted Isak’s brilliant through ball to level it up 3-3, before Phillips got it on the act again. Gordon teed Barnes up at the top of the box but it was all too easy for the winger as he skipped past Phillips’ challenge before bending a stunner into the corner. St James’ Park went wild, Eddie Howe was off dancing down the touchline, and Phillips was left to rue one of the worst cameos you’ll ever see. Defeat would have ramped up the pressure on Howe but the most unlikely of victories leaves them well in the hunt for a European spot. CASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO WELCOME OFFERSA rip-roaring classic, just two minutes were on the clock when Vladimir Coufal brought Anthony Gordon down inside the area.Fresh from his England debut, the Scouse winger was full of beans from the off and danced forward before his low cross came back his way.He got there just before Coufal and was hauled down, with ref Rob Jones pointing straight to the spot.A lengthy VAR check for offside followed before Isak stepped up and slammed into the bottom corner. But the Geordies hoping to run away with it in the glorious sunshine were sorely mistaken.Michail Antonio levelled up 21 minutes in but it all stemmed from Toon centre-back Jamaal Lascelles hobbling off moments before.Emil Krafth replaced the skipper and moved to right-back, with Tino Livramento switched to the left. And a back four who had never played together were all over the shop.Alexander Isak opened the scoring from the spotCredit: GettyIsak’s red hot form continuesCredit: ReutersMichail Antonio levelled the scoring for West HamCredit: ReutersAntonio celebrates his equaliserCredit: GettyLucas Paqueta picked it up on halfway and played a beautiful lofted through ball over the dawdling Krafth to the onrushing Antonio. The gap between Newcastle’s defence and keeper Martin Dubravka was alarming but the Slovakian is allergic of leaving his six-yard box, so the striker had a free run on goal and duly obliged by bagging his fourth of the season. With the Euros on the horizon, this was a great opportunity for Gordon and Jarrod Bowen to impress Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate.Gordon started brightly but nodded a brilliant chance wide after it was put on a plate by Jacob Murphy.Bruno Guimaraes then curled one off the bar, but the Hammers took the lead in first-half injury time via Kudus. The Ghana winger was fouled by Fabian Schar but caught the Swiss defender in the face with a stray arm.As Schar rolled around feigning injury, Paqueta took a quick free-kick to Bowen, catching the whole Newcastle side off guard, with Kudus rifling home.Mohammed Kudus gave West Ham the leadCredit: RexThe ballboy refused to give up his seat for a celebrationCredit: GettyJarod Bowen further increased West Ham’s leadCredit: RexBowen thought he had given the Hammers breathing spaceCredit: ReutersThe Mags were up in arms but not one of them was alert to the danger and only had themselves to blame. And they were 3-1 down two minutes into the second half when caught napping AGAIN.Kudus broke from his own box from a Newcastle corner, skinned Schar down the left and played Bowen in down the middle. As the Newcastle players ambled back, the England hopeful had all the time in the world to advance on the rooted Dubravka and fire into the bottom corner. The Mags were a complete mess now. Livramento hobbled off, sub Krafth was hooked following a shocking cameo, and then fellow replacement Miguel Almiron went off crocked 11 minutes after coming on.Alexander Isak and Sean Longstaff both butchered sitters, and the local had all but given up hope…until David Moyes brought Kalvin Phillips on.The midfielder on loan from Manchester City has had a torrid time at West Ham, and it got even worse here when he gave away a penalty on Gordon with one of his first actions.Isak slotted his second, St James’ Park woke up, and it was game on with 13 minutes remaining.Six minutes and Newcastle were miraculously level. Isak was the architect this time, dropping deep and slipping in sub Harvey Barnes, who poked home. The Tynesiders were incredibly eyeing a winner now, and that man Barnes was the hero in the 90th minute, doing Phillips all ends up at the top of the box before curling a beauty into the corner.Isak got the comeback on the roadCredit: GettyHe got his second from the spotCredit: PAHarvey Barnes levelled the game for NewcastleCredit: GettyThe game was all squareCredit: ReutersBarnes riffled home a stunning winnerCredit: ReutersIt capped off a remarkable comebackCredit: Reuters More

Copy linkCopiedTeenager can be Mainoo man
In the aftermath of Kobbie Mainoo’s full England debut, the teenage midfielder was labelled a future star by one of the world’s best.
Jude Bellingham knows a thing or two about being talked up as a wonderkid,
“[Kobbie Mainoo] was good tonight,” Bellingham told ITV.
“I’m speaking like the old head and I know there’s a clamour [for him to be selected] and I’ve been there. But he is definitely a brilliant player and he will have a great future for Manchester United and, hopefully, for England too.”

Copy linkCopiedJude delighted to silence critics
Jude Bellingham fired a last-second England equaliser, and then admitted how pleased he was to have stopped the moaners.
Speaking at the final whistle, the Real Madrid ace stated that he knew just how much flak Gareth Southgate and his squad would have received had they found themselves on the end of another defeat and so was eager to stop the moaning before it had begun.
I enjoyed that goal because I knew the rubbish we would have got if we had lost two games on the bounce. You have to keep perspective with these games. There were a lot of lads making debuts, a lot of these boys I had never played with before. I thought we created a lot of chances and I’m happy I could make it up to the team, but we should have won it with the chances we made. I think these have been two games that will stand us in great stead going into the Euros.Jude BellinghamChannel 4

It ends all-square at Wembley Stadium after Jude Bellingham’s last-gasp goal.
    Copy linkCopiedEngland 2-2 Belgium
90+5. With almost the last kick of the game, Jude Bellingham equalises and spares England’s blushes!
With Wembley having given up hope, a long free-kick from Pickford bounces around inside the area, and is eventually steered to the byline.
Ollie Watkins keeps it alive, and with little on for James Maddison, the Tottenham man shows great creativity and composure to look up and pick out Bellingham back in the centre.
One touch from the midfielder, and a comprehensive finish to boot and the Three Lions celebrate a draw.
It won’t be the last time that this superstar comes to England’s rescue over the next decade.

90+2. Inside four minutes of stoppage time, and Lukebakio has the chance to seal a famous Belgian win but spoons over when the chance was laid on a plate from the right.
Copy linkCopiedEngland 1-2 Belgium – Maddison yellow card
    90. Rice and Onana square up to each other in the centre-circle, exchange some harsh words, and then indicate that they can carry it on off the pitch after the game.
At the end of that little episode, James Maddison get booked.
    Don’t even ask.

    88. Vertonghen knocks Foden over in the area, and although the England forward looks towards referee Sebastian Gishamer, it’s more in hope than any expectation.
Strong defending from the former Tottenham favourite.
    Copy linkCopiedEngland 1-2 Belgium
    86. There’s no great charge from England, no kitchen sink being thrown.
Nevertheless, Foden is desperately trying to force an equalise from somewhere, somehow.
Aside from his finishing, the Manchester City man has been extremely good again tonight.
    Copy linkCopiedEngland 1-2 Belgium
    84. England are a little over five minutes away from their first back-to-back defeats at Wembley for 11 years.
Still, I’m sure football fans won’t overreact on social media as a result.
Copy linkCopiedEngland 1-2 Belgium – Belgium substitutions
    82. A triple change for the Belgians.
Off go Romelu Lukaku, Orel Mangala and Zeno Debast.
On come Michy Batshuayi, Lois Openda and Wout Faes.
Copy linkCopiedEngland 1-2 Belgium – England substitutions
    80. Two more changes for the hosts.
Jarrod Bowen has been bright, but his time is up for Anthony Gordon.
And also off is Ivan Toney. A goalscorer on his full debut, but he won’t have the chance to add to it with Ollie Watkins on in his place.
    Copy linkCopiedEngland 1-2 Belgium
    78. Foden! It should have been the equaliser!
It’s brilliant work from Bowen, who tricks his way across the Belgium backline before nicking a pass through to the Manchester City ace.
Foden takes a nice touch to make room on his left foot, but then dras his subsequent effort wide of the far post.
    Copy linkCopiedEngland 1-2 Belgium
    76. The pace has dropped noticeably, and there are some tired-looking players out there.
Not least Ivan Toney, who half-heartedly pulls out of a challenge on Doku on halfway.
Copy linkCopiedEngland 1-2 Belgium – England substitution
    74. Kobbie Mainoo’s night is over but the 18-year-old can be very proud of his performance. He has been excellent.
James Maddison is on for the final 16 minutes plus.
    Copy linkCopiedEngland 1-2 Belgium
    72. A wonderful challenge by Bellingham to deny Doku when the winger was in full flight.
The midfielder’s game isn’t all about attacking. That was peak Bobby Moore.
Copy linkCopiedEngland 1-2 Belgium – Belgium substitutions
    70. Two more switches for Domenico Tedesco and his visiting team.
The Belgium boss sends on the experienced Thomas Meunier and Aster Vranckx, replacing double-goalscorer Youri Tielemans and Arthur Theate.
    Copy linkCopiedEngland 1-2 Belgium
    68. Midway through the second half, and England still trail – but the chances are coming.
There’s relatively little action on the home bench at the moment, but could that change soon?
Copy linkCopiedEngland 1-2 Belgium – Gomez yellow card
    66. It’s a first yellow card of the night, and it’s shown to Joe Gomez.
The Liverpool defender is penalised for a foul on Doku, although the caution could be the result of a totting up process.
    Copy linkCopiedEngland 1-2 Belgium
    64. Lukaku blazes over at one end, and then England go to work.
Bowen bursts through the middle, Foden is denied inside the area by a brilliant Onana challenge, and then Mainoo’s goalbound drive is superbly kept out by the legs of Sels.
    Copy linkCopiedEngland 1-2 Belgium
    62. England go close again.
Unsurprisingly, Foden and Bellingham are at the heart of it, the former holding off a barrage of opponents before finding the latter on the right-side of the penalty area.
The Real Madrid man’s low cross is cleverly met by Bowen at the near post with an instinctive shot that Sels does well to hold.
Copy linkCopiedEngland 1-2 Belgium – Belgium substitution
    60. The visitors make the first of what I suspect will be many second half substitutions.
It’s a change in attack with Sevilla’s Dodi Lukebakio coming on for Leandro Trossard.

Gareth Southgate insisted at looking at the bigger picture after England had fallen to defeat by Brazil at Wembley.
The Three Lions boss believes there are many reasons for optimism following a game in which he handed England debuts to Anthony Gordon, Ezri Konsa and Kobbie Mainoo.
I thought there were lots of very good performances. It was a top level game and we’ve controlled long parts of it. We’ve had as many attempts at goal as them, and in the end it’s that ruthless moment that decides the game. But we’ve had a couple of debuts, some players with very few caps, and there were some very important individual performances.Gareth SouthgateChannel 4

England failed to kick on in the second half after a steady opening 45 minutes, and only managed to must three shots on target across the whole encounter.

Copy linkCopiedFull time – England 0-1 Brazil
It’s all over, and England’s undefeated run at Wembley comes to an end.
The Three Lions were last beaten here by Denmark in the Nations League back in October 2020 – 21 home games ago.
The only goal was scored by 17-year-old substitute Endrick, his first goal for his country that made him the youngest ever player to score in a senior men’s game at Wembley.

90+5. In the final seconds of the encounter, Brazil break from an England corner.
Pereira once again shows composure to cooly play in Endrick, who should bag a second, but sees his shot stopped by Pickford.

    90. The board goes up to signal four minutes of stoppage time, which is just long enough for Rashford to misdirect a header into the nearest defender at the far post.

    88. A final two changes for the South Americans.
Wendell and Vinicius Junior head off to be replaced by Bremer and Pablo Maia.

    86. Mainoo has settled into the match seamlessly despite Brazil’s late strike.
The youngster appears completely unfazed by international football.
    Copy linkCopiedEngland 0-1 Brazil
    84. The majority of this Wembley crowd are feeling flat now after that goal, and are unlikely to help England back into the game.
Instead, the hosts are going to have to conjure some inspiration themselves, and – sad to say – it looks unlikely.
    Copy linkCopiedEngland 0-1 Brazil
    82. As the game restarts, television viewers are shown the still that clearly has Endrick behind the ball when Vinicius Junior struck his shot…
…but that didn’t seem to be the call that England were asking about.
Instead, their appeals centred around Vinicius Junior’s original run on to Pereira’s pass.
    Copy linkCopiedEngland 0-1 Brazil
    80. A wonderful moment for 17-year-old Endrick!
    But England are absolutely furious!
Andreas Pereira clips a delightful pass over the home defence for Vinicius Junior to race on to, and although the forward’s shot is blocked by Jordan Pickford, Brazil’s teenage substitute follows it in to fire into the empty net.
John Stones, Lewis Dunk and an array of players in white shirts surround the referee, desperately asking for an offside in the build-up, but after a very brief VAR check, the goal is deemed to stand.

    75. It’s a Manchester United moment.
Two more switches for the hosts bring in Marcus Rashford, and 18-year-old Kobbie Mainoo, who becomes the 14th teenager in history to represent the senior England side.
The pair replace Conor Gallagher and Anthony Gordon.

    73. Dunk, so to react in the first instance, comes to England’s rescue with a perfectly-timed block to deny Raphinha.
Vinicius Junior retrieves the play, but wastes it uncharacteristically with a horrible miscue.

    71. A couple of interesting changes for the visitors.
First on is Fulham’s Andreas Pereira for only his second international cap, and his first in more than five years.
Also coming on is the much-heralded Endrick, the 17-year-old striking sensation who will soon be joining Real Madrid.
Rodrygo and Lucas Paqueta make way.

    70. Gallagher goes down under pressure in the penalty area, but already has a wry smile on his face as he looks hopefully towards the unimpressed referee.

    Copy linkCopiedEngland 0-0 Brazil
    68. With Chilwell’s removal, it looks as though Joe Gomez is going to continue in the left-back role that he has filled in at for Liverpool this season.

    66. A trio of England changes sees Lewis Dunk, Joe Gomez and Jarrod Bowen introduced into the ‘action’.

    62. There’s movement on the England bench, and changes could be amount to be made.

England shirt updates — Football fans furious after change to St George’s Cross on 2024 Nike kit as FA ‘stand by’ move

ENGLAND fans have been left furious after a change was made to the St George’s Cross on the new England home kit. The Three Lions’ strips were unveiled on Monday with the traditional red cross altered to one with navy, light blue and purple as part on a “playful update”.Despite the backlash, Nike will not succumb to pressure from some England fans to revert the decision, according to The Mail.A Nike spokesperson said: “The England 2024 Home kit disrupts history with a modern take on a classic. The trim on the cuffs takes its cues from the training gear worn by England’s 1966 heroes, with a gradient of blues and reds topped with purple.”The same colours also feature an interpretation of the flag of St. George on the back of the collar.”Read our live blog below for the latest news and updates…How much will it set you back?
The new kits, which are reportedly designed to “unite and inspire”, are retailing at £124.99 for adults and a whopping £119.99 for children.
Fans can also get their hands on a cheaper “stadium” version which costs £84.99 and £64.99 for children.
Keir Starmer also said that Nike could “They could also “reduce the price of the shirts”.
Copy linkCopiedA kit change could take up to 9 months
The 2024 kit was agreed upon two years ago and the unlikely decision to create and distribute a new one would take between six and nine months.
It is understood the flag alteration was the work of a Nike designer, but was also signed off by the FA.
And the FA insist the decision was made to “honour the classic colour regime of 1966 training gear”.
Copy linkCopied’It’s a national identity and I just don’t really think it needs to be changed’
Adrian Bevington, the former FA managing director, said he would not have signed off the shirt.
He told TalkSPORT: “I think it’s an emotive subject and it was always going to cause the conjecture that we’ve got.
“I always try and see it from all sides, and I understand from Nike’s perspective they’re looking to push all the time and be cutting edge and as modern as they can be to the different markets they serve.”
Bevington said however, it is “our flag”.
He continued: “When the games take place, particularly during the tournament, you’ll see the stadium absolutely swamped with the cross of St George hanging everywhere.
“It’s a national identity and I just don’t really think it needs to be changed. And it’s going to upset a lot of people because people do feel passionate about this.”
Copy linkCopiedPeter Shilton ‘totally against’ new kit
Former England goalkeeper Shilton also has his say – announcing he was “totally against” the new shirt.
He told GB News: “I am totally against it, which I don’t think is a surprise. I mean I am a traditionalist, really.
“I think we have seen a lot of design changes on shirts and that’s to get the fans to buy the new shirt every time it changes.
“But now they are messing with the colours on a national flag and you know, where would it stop once it starts?
“Is the next shirt going to have more changes in the colour? So I am against it, I think it is wrong.
“It is only a small change, but I think it could be the start of more changes.
“That’s the way I look on it, once you start changing the colour. I mean the Three Lions is obviously traditional and the fans love that.
“I am very surprised to be fair that the FA agreed to this but it’s all about money and making money and if the shirt sponsor says look ‘we’d like to do this’ then sometimes you get maybe members at the FA who think, ‘Oh well, we are getting paid well for it.’ ‘You know, we won’t bother’.”
Copy linkCopiedHarry Reknapp slams new kit
Footie legend Harry Redknapp has had his say on the saga.
Redknapp this morning blasted the decision as “an absolute disgrace”.
He slammed: “I’ve seen plenty of own goals in my time, but this has to be the worst ever.
“Who on earth thought this was a good idea? It’s the cross of St George, red and white…would Nike do this with another country’s national flag?
“It’s something that should be respected, not changed for a bit of playful fun, as they put it.
“In my book it’s an absolute disgrace – I hope they see sense and have a rethink.”
Copy linkCopied’Don’t mess’ with the flag
Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer has waded in on the decision to change the St Georges Cross.
The culture secretary said: “Fans should always come first, and it’s clear that this is not what fans want.”
“Our national heritage – including St George’s Cross – brings us together. Toying with it is pointless and unnecessary,” Ms Frazer said.

The home kit is the classic white with a blue collar and blue shorts.
Meanwhile, the second strip is all purple and has received widespread praise from fans.
Lastly, the keeper’s will line up in between the sticks in eye-catching orange jerseys.

Mr Sunak has said he “prefers the original” England shirt, as he waded in on the row over Nike’s decision to change the colour of the St George’s Cross on its new jersey.
He said: “Obviously I prefer the original, and my general view is that when it comes to our national flags, we shouldn’t mess with them.

Keir Starmer slammed the FA and Nike for changing the “unifying” St George’s flag on footy shirts.
Sir Keir said the original colours were “unifying” – and called the St George’s cross “something to be proud of”.
Speaking to Harry Cole on the Sun’s brilliant new politics show Never Mind the Ballots he said: “Yeah it was. I’m a big football fan, I go to England games, men, women’s games.
“And the flag is used by everybody, it’s unifying, it doesn’t need to change.
“We just need to be proud of it. So I think they should just reconsider this and change it back.”
    Copy linkCopiedSimon Jordan slams move
TalkSPORT host Simon Jordan has slammed the decision to alter the St George’s Cross.
He said: “I don’t quite understand why Nike want to have a playful brief on our identity.
“Is our national identity a joke, is it something we’re ashamed of? I think our national identity is something we should be proud of. I don’t find it offensive, I find it unnecessary.
“Rather than reclaim it, what we’ll do is put up a meaningless cross that has no value to it and represents nobody.
“No other country would allow this to happen, they wouldn’t allow it to be done on their national shirt.
“This is the same Nike that couldn’t even be bothered to produce Mary Earps shirts. I don’t think we should be taking lessons from Nike on the values of this country.
“And the FA are absolutely complicit in this. The FA will have their virtue-signalling fingers all over this.”
