The curious case of Kai Havertz
Having spent £65m on the German midfielder in the summer, you have to wonder whether Mikel Arteta has ever seen a Chelsea game.
Since arriving at The Emirates, the player has failed to impress and today was no different.
Another anonymous performance where fans are left wondering if he is still on the pitch.

Copy linkCopiedGunners move up table with win
Arsenal move into third place in the Premier League, level on points with Aston Villa and Man City.
They currently sit only two points behind leaders Liverpool.
With Jurgen Klopp’s side due to visit The Emirates soon, this seems a mouth-watering prospect.

As the goals went in towards the end of the game, the travelling fans unfurled some banners with messages for the owners.
Things are not going well for The Eagles and there seems to be no quick fix to their problems.

It only takes one moment to change the impetus of a season, and maybe Leandro Trossard’s goal to make it 3-0 was just that.
Despite winning 2-0 thanks to two set-pieces, the mood inside the ground was flat. Arsenal were still not clicking with ball at feet and were terribly clunky in attack.
And then came a free-flowing counter that brought the noise. David Raya’s quick throw-out, Gabriel Jesus’ driving run and pass and Trossard’s venomous finish.
The sort of goal the swashbuckling Gunners of last season would have scored – rapid, direct and fantastically fluid. Arteta celebrated by shouting “VAMOS” while applauding Raya.
The first open-play goal in this stadium by Arsenal since December 17.
Maybe this is the one that brings the confidence back that this side desperately need to feed off for the rest of the campaign in the hunt for the title.

It is a five-star performance from The Gunners.
Three second half goals condemn Crystal Palace to a heavy defeat.

90+2. The Crystal Palace fans have unfurled some banners showing their thoughts on the way the club is run.
It seems the general feeling is there is not investment in the squad.
Having lost Zaha in the summer, they haven’t really brought many players in during the summer transfer window.

    90. Mikel Arteta will be pleased with the result today.
It was integral that his side got back to winning ways.
There will be far harder challenges than this Palace team in the weeks to come, that is for sure.
We are going to have six additional minutes.

It is half-cleared and ball breaks to Zinchenko in the box.

    86. Tomkins comes on for Guehi for the visitors.
Arsenal continue to pass the ball around, trying to probe and find an opening.

    82. Jesus and Gabriel come off for Kiwior and Nketiah.
It is another game without a goal for the former Man City striker.
Despite the scoreline, their strikers continue to fire blanks.
The Arsenal frontline could be renamed ‘the starting pistol’.

    76. Ahamada and Franca come on for the visitors.
    They replace Schlupp and Clyne.
This has been a disappointing performance for the Crystal Palace fans.
Fortunately they have not had to travel far.

    74. Declan Rice comes off for Jorginho.
Arteta has the chance to give some of his fringe players a run out now with the result in the bag.
Arsenal look to play the ball out from a goal kick like a five-a-side game and Raya immediately puts Odegaard under pressure.
This just seems like an accident waiting to happen with this Spanish keeper.

    72. Arsenal will get a bit of a break after today’s game.
Next weekend sees a round of FA Cup action which no longer involves The Gunners.

    70. Arsenal look most susceptible when they are trying to play out from the back, it really doesn’t work for them.

    66. Roy Hodgson’s job could really be under threat right now.
Wins are looking hard to come by and they are stuck in a rut of poor form currently.
You have to wonder about the presence of Graham Potter at the game today even more now.
    Copy linkCopiedArsenal 3-0 Crystal Palace
    64. Jesus is penalised for a foul on Eze just outside the box.
This presents a chance for Crystal Palace to trouble Raya in the Arsenal goal.
Eberechi Eze is stood over the ball and strikes it well but the Arsenal keeper palms it over the crossbar.
It was a routine save as the Palace winger hit it straight at him.

    Egypt so far
As you can see from the table below it’s all to play for, for Egypt.
The loss of Mo Salah for their final group game isn’t going to help the situation.
    Work to do!

    Copy linkCopiedThe game itself
The game itself was eventful even outside of the Salah injury.
It finished 2-2 with West Ham star Mohammed Kudus scoring twice for Egypt.
The draw means Egypt are still fighting to stay in the Afcon.
They are on two points after two games, and lie second.
But they’ll need to get a win against Cape Verde in their final match.
    Copy linkCopiedTitle race ramifications?
What does this all mean for the title race you might ask?
Well Salah isn’t due back from the Afcon for a few weeks anyway.
Liverpool take on Premier League title rivals Arsenal on 4th February.
He wouldn’t have been ready for that game anyway.
But with Manchester City on 9th March, is that the date we could see him back?
    Copy linkCopiedEgypt boss speaks
Egypt manager Rui Vitoria has spoken over Mo Salah’s hamstring injury tonight.
He said: “I hope it’s not a big problem…but now, I don’t know, because it’s [too] early to see something.
“I think it’s not [serious], but let’s see.
    “Let’s see if Salah recovers.”
That sounds like good news for both club and country?
    Copy linkCopiedA GOOD OMEN?
There is some slim hopes for Liverpool, and it’s linked to the last time Salah got a hamstring injury.
In the 2019-20 season, he suffered a similar issue… and the Reds went on to win the Premier League title.
Could history repeat itself? A good omen over bad news?

    Copy linkCopiedLENGTH OF TIME OUT?
It’s all-but certain Salah has injured his hamstring, which has different levels of severity.
According to reports, he could be out for as long as three-months, which would be a huge blow for Liverpool.

First class: from 10 days to two weeks

Second degree: from 3 weeks to 6 weeks

    Third degree: interruption (3 months)

    Copy linkCopied’Not looking good’
Fans reacted with shock at the news of Salah’s injury and rushed to social media.
One said: “Very disheartening that Mo Salah couldn’t continue.
“Firstly, two great friendly nations locking horns.
“Secondly, my Liverpool player getting injured. This is an awkward situation I find myself.”
    Another added: “That’s bad.”
    Copy linkCopiedWATCH IT HERE
It’s a worrying time for Liverpool and Egypt, with the incident a real blow for both.
Salah can be seen down on the ground, a pained expression on his face.
Footage below shows how bad it could be for the legendary Reds striker.
    Watch it here:

    Copy linkCopiedMo in tears
Salah looked visibly upset as he hobbled off the pitch playing for Egypt tonight.
He fought back tears, with fears he could miss the rest of the tournament for his home nation.
And it could have further ramifications for Liverpool if it turns into a long-term problem.
The incident happened just before half-time during their game against Ghana.
    Copy linkCopiedSalah injured
Mo Salah has left Liverpool fans fearing the worst after leaving Egypt’s clash with Ghana at Afcon 2023 injured.
The Premier League star went down clutching his hamstring on the stroke of half-time.
And he was taken off minutes later, before the game finished 2-2.
The extent of Salah’s injury for now remains unclear.
Depending on the grade of Salah’s injury, the 31-year-old could be out for as many as six weeks, which would end his time at Afcon.

David Moyes says things didn’t go for his side in their cup dumping tonight.
The West Ham boss was quick to point out the exciting second half of the season his side have to look forward to though.
He told BBC: “Disappointed. Lots of things didn’t go for us tonight but overall disappointed.
“We had one or two opportunities, especially in the first half. Some good things but not enough to win the game.
“It is a blow because we would have liked to have been in the cup but we have Europe to look forward to in March and we are in a good position in the league, but we are disappointed to go out.”
    Copy linkCopied’Emotional time’
Rob Edwards said his side weren’t at their best as the saw off League One Bolton to reach the fourth round.
The Hatters are now set to head for some warm weather training and recovery after a tough opening half of the season in the top flight.
Edwards said, via the BBC: “I’m pleased we are through, tonight was about winning. We were not at our best, sloppy in too many moments and allowed them to build into the game.
“We know we have to be full tilt. This game we just dropped a bit, and you can’t do that. Bolton are a big club, but when we are favourites, we took our foot off the gas and Bolton could have punished us.
“We’re going away for some warm weather, getting training in and time together, down time together. Has been a tough season so far, everything with Locks as well, it has been an emotional time.”

Bristol City boss Liam Manning admits being proud of his players for keeping their emotions in check through a tough 90 minutes.
He told BBC: “Massively. I think it was another solid performance. We showed real resilience, a good connection and level of organisation. At times it was challenging and we had to keep our emotions in check and we did a terrific job at that.
“We don’t carry anybody – everybody attacks and everybody defends. You need everyone to turn up and do the basics as well and when called upon give that little bit extra.
“I actually think we can improve and get a little bit better.”

Now, will Richarlison continue in his No9 role that has done him well in recent weeks?
Or will Timo Werner’s introduction mean a shift to the left wing spot for the Brazilian?
Time will tell, but he’s certainly had an impact for Spurs this term.
He has more goals and more assists than Marcus Rashford, despite playing fewer games than the England man.

Manchester United have been boosted by the return of both Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro to their matchday squad.
Centre-back Martinez has not played since September having aggravated a metatarsal injury originally suffered towards the end of last season.
Midfielder Casemiro last played in the Carabao Cup defeat to Newcastle in early November when he suffered a hamstring injury.
Both were on the bench as Erik ten Hag made only one change to the side that beat Wigan in the FA Cup last Monday with Christian Eriksen replacing Scott McTominay.
There was another start for the impressive Kobbi Mainoo whose performances are now demanding more regular playing time.
United went into the game desperately in need of a victory to keep in touch with the race for the top four.
Fifth placed Spurs went into this game on an impressive run of five wins in six games including the 1-0 FA Cup win over Burnley.
Timo Werner went straight into their starting line-up after arriving on loan from RB Leipzig last week.
Radu Dragusin is also a new arrival in a £25million deal from Genoa and was on the bench.
Micky van de Ven enjoyed his first start since getting injured in early November and Cristian Romero returned as captain.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is convinced he will have control of football operations at Manchester United ratified within weeks.
The INEOS boss is in attendance today – his first match at Old Trafford today since it was agreed that he would purchase 25 per cent of the club.
That will include taking entire control of the footballing side of United.
Ahead of the game Ratcliffe walked around the corridors of Old Trafford meeting staff and media.
He could not answer many specific questions about his plans for the club with the Premier League still to grant his involvement which he believes is a matter of weeks away.

Sir Jim said: “Early to mid Feb. We hope they don’t find anything dodgy in our CV!
“It’s the first match for me since we got here. It’s taken a few turns as you know but these things take some doing. I am very excited to be here but I can’t answer any questions really. “It’s a big match. We normally do well against Spurs.”
Sir Jim has been involved in elite sport with cycling, sailing and with Nice in Ligue 1.
He said this was undoubtedly the most exciting thing he has been involved in, having first set his eyes on United ‘two or three years ago’.
“I have done a few exciting things but this caps it all there is no question about that,” he said.
He has already had meetings with manager Erik ten Hag but would not expand on what was said.
He said: “I have met Erik but inappropriate to say anything, until it is all formalised.
Sir Jim, born just outside of Manchester in Failsworth, is a lifelong United fan but said he has not been to Old Trafford for ‘two or three years’ for a game having first come 60 years ago.
He named Paul Scholes and Eric Cantona as his favourite players and going forward said he would be a more regular visitor.
He said: “I can’t come all the time because I have a few other things to manage. But I will come.”

Has either manager got a joker up their sleeve in regards to today’s team news.
We’re about to find out in the next few seconds….
    Copy linkCopiedAnge on big games
The Tottenham boss insists his side have shown up well in games against the so-called big teams this season.
And he reckons past results won’t dictate how his side do here and moving forward.
He said: “I think it is important if you want to be successful, you need to be able to perform in those big games, particularly away from home.
“I’m not a great one at looking at the historical references to these things, I wasn’t there so I don’t know whether there was something endemic in the club that didn’t allow that. I just tackle from when I get into a club.
“We went to Arsenal, City (and drew), (beat) Liverpool here, we’ve done OK in those games. Not just results but performance-wise, I don’t think we’ve walked away from any of those games and thought there was a massive gap between us and them.”
    Copy linkCopiedHow we stand
This was the Premier League table – well, the top half anyway – waking up this morning.
With a split across this weekend and next with the fixtures, there’s a real chance for United and Spurs to put the pressure on those teams ahead of them.
United could go seventh today – Spurs could climb into the top four.

    Copy linkCopiedTen Hag’s praise
The United boss was fully complimentary of his opposite number in the dugout today.
He said: “They’re definitely different, so I think they complement the way they played, he changed the environment there, they’re really proactive, very enjoyable to watch them with a lot of dynamics, very proactive, they combine it with good results.
“But also when we played them over there and I think that’s what we can take belief out of that. In the first 35 minutes we dominated them.
“We should have gone in the lead but we didn’t so we have to make our own luck and take control of the game and finish the chances.”

The Man Utd players haven’t long arrived at Old Trafford ahead of this one.

Speaking of those absentees and the current issues, both managers are set to welcome back key players in the coming weeks.
It doesn’t help that the Asian Cup and AFCON have already disrupted their usual line-ups.
United are set to be without Amrabat, Mount, Maguire, Lindelof, Malacia and Martial.
But good news was offered at the pre-match press conferences when Ten Hag revealed Eriksen and Antony would be involved, while Shaw, Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez had also resumed training this week.
For Spurs, their injury list is well-documented, with Son, Bissouma and Sarr away on international duty, too.
    Copy linkCopiedGood afternoon!
And welcome along to Old Trafford for a very, very intriguing Super Sunday clash between Manchester United and Tottenham.
United come into this one in ninth spot after defeat at Nottingham Forest last time out.
Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs have won five of their last six games as they begin to find their early season form again.
An incentive for them is three points will see them leapfrog Arsenal and into the top four.
Injuries have hit both squads this season so far but they’ll be hoping that won’t matter today.

City with chance to close gap
With the Premier League fixtures spread across two weekends, victory today would take Man City second in the table.
It would leave them only two points behind league leaders Liverpool.
Jurgen Klopp’s side offer an obstacle to their hopes of another Premier League crown this season and Pep Guardiola will want to put pressure on the Merseyside outfit this evening.

When the new owners came into St James’ Park, fans thought the sky was the limit with black and white jerseys with Mbappe 9 on the back imminent.
Sadly for Eddie Howe’s side, with FFP finally flexing their muscle this season, that seems a distant dream for the oil rich club.
It has been reported this week that Newcastle will need to sell to buy in this January transfer window.

Both of these sides, who are owned by the Saudi state, have high expectations for the season ahead.
For Man City, they are looking to win a fourth consecutive Premier League title, something which has never been done before.
Newcastle were expecting to regulars in the mix up for Champions League qualification but are a long way off that currently.
Copy linkCopiedWelcome to Newcastle vs Man City
The Magpies welcome Man City to St James’ Park for a game of great importance to both teams but for very different reasons.
Joelinton has been ruled out for a minimum of six weeks due to a thigh injury and joins Callum Wilson, Matt Targett, Nick Pope, Jacob Murphy, Joe Willock, Havey Barnes, Elliot Anderson and Javi Manquillo in the Newcastle very crowded treatment room.
With the injury to Joelinton, Lewis Miley will slot in to partner Sean Longstaff and Bruno Guimaraes in the heart of midfield for Eddie Howe’s side.
Fabian Schar signed a contract extension this week and is likely to join a back four alongside Kieran Trippier, Sven Botman and Dan Burn as they look to face Pep Guardiola’s fluid attack.
Alexander Isak, Miguel Almiron and Anthony Gordon will lead the attack for The Magpies as they look to cause problems for the visitors.
For Man City Erling Haaland and John Stones will definitely miss this game while Jack Grealish remains a doubt due to illness.
Manuel Akanji is a minor doubt as he was forced off in the first half of the recent FA Cup game but Man City expect to have Bernardo Silva and Kalvin Phillips available after both missed the last match due to illness.
Kyle Walker and Nathan Ake are expected to be recalled to the team that started the cup match, along with goalkeeper Ederson.
The big question for the visitors’ fans is whether they will get to see Kevin De Bruyne start the game against Newcastle today.
