Luton 1 Everton 1: Hatters fight back for draw with Adebayo strike but rue missed opportunity to get out of drop zone

ROB EDWARDS tried out a new pair of lucky undies last night – but his Luton lads are now running out of time in this Premier League relegation scrap destined for squeaky-bum time.Elijah Adebayo cancelled out Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s penalty for Everton in a nervy Kenilworth Road affair that failed to live up to Hatters boss Edward’s expectations.Dominic Calvert-Lewin broke the deadlock from the penalty spotCredit: GettyElijah Adebayo levelled things up for Luton before the breakCredit: GettyLuton and Everton played out a topsy-turvy draw at Kenilworth RoadThe Hatters had the fair share of the match but failed to convert that into three pointsEdwards had called for the Kenny faithful to create an epic atmosphere.Instead, nervous tension saw Luton hold on for a point against the already-safe Toffees. Not even Edwards’ change of underwear did the trick. A huge chance missed to rise above Nottingham Forest and out of the drop zone. They have just two games left to pull of a Great Escape.A real let-off for the Midlands boys, who have a chance to go three points clear at Bramall Lane this weekend, and with their appeal on a four-point deduction still in the post. This was originally billed as the ultimate six-pointer, but three straight wins before this one secured top flight football for Sean Dyche’s men, and they were unlucky not to snatch a fourth with Calvert-Lewin and Jack Harrison denied by the brilliant Thomas Kaminski late on.There remains a lot of uncertainty in the battle at the bottom, but one thing is for sure – it is going to be mighty tight.Luton had a welcome sight in their starting XI with Adebayo starting for the first time since February after a lengthy recovery from a hamstring injury.CASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO WELCOME OFFERSCalvert-Lewin returned as a starter for Dyche having shaken off his illness. The 27-year-old has finally seized some form in recent weeks with three goals in his last four Premier League outings and was involved from the off in Bedfordshire.Ashley Young – the victim of boos throughout due to his Watford connections – zipped a ball down the channel for Calvert-Lewin to chase before feeding Dwight McNeil in the box.Former Luton Town goalkeeper Ron Baynham reflects on his short England careerDown he went following a challenge by Teden Mengi.Referee Tim Robinson was unimpressed, but replays did show McNeil’s right foot took a hefty stamping.Mengi suffered a horror start to the game, first by diverting a McNeil cross towards his own goal but for a super reaction stop from Hatters keeper Kaminski. But Mengi was not done there, as moments later he bizarrely decided to grapple Toffees defender Jarrad Braithwaite in a headlock during a corner for the visitors.Braithwaite was nowhere near the ball, yet Mengi felt the need to wrestle the 6ft5in Englishman to the floor just to be safe.Ref Robinson initially waved it away, but 40 seconds on and VAR reared its meddling head, suggesting a monitor review. Well nobody saw that coming.
All credit has to go to Olympiacos manager Jose Luis Mendilibar, who a few Premier League clubs may be after if he can set a team up like that every week.
Like a Spanish Jurgen Klopp, he ordered his side to take risks and not give the Villa defence a second to play out.
The former Sevilla boss also gave a ball to a Villa mascot after the match, which was a nice touch.
For Emery, it was like a horrible throwback to one of his Arsenal team’s performances.
Villa were completely unable to adapt when they were put under pressure and the game went against them.
But they did have more than their share of chances, and while it’s an extremely tall order to win by two goals or more in Piraeus, they won’t feel they’re completely out of it.

Jhon Duran goes for the spectacular, and spectacular it isn’t.
The Colombian’s effort at an overhead scissor kick is so wayward that it doesn’t even reach the goal.
Now it’s defender Panos Retsos’ turn to go down with a banged head.

John McGinn gets the ball in a promising position and beats his man on the edge of the box.
However, his penalty goes straight at Tzolakis.

Douglas Luiz will have few worse evenings in his career.
David Carmo was lucky to avoid having a penalty given against him for a handball, but then brought down Duran leaving the referee with no choice but to point to the spot.
Luiz, who has had a shocker so far, immediately picks up the ball.
But Olympiacos then resort to delaying tactics Emi Martinez would be proud of and it gets to the Brazilian, who fires so high and wide that he’d have missed if there were two goals!

Aston Villa get a free kick and it finds the head of Ollie Watkins.
However, Watkins header ends up closer to the corner flag than the goal.

Ollie Watkins is at the centre of things again as he is played through on the right.
He cuts inside but does everything too ponderously and sees his shot comfortably held by Tzolakis.

Daniel Podence is subbed off for Andre Horta.

A well-placed through ball finds Watkins but Tzolakis is quick to react.
However the Greek goalkeeper slides the ball against Watkins and it goes wide.

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino explained his philosophy when picking his strongest team.
Today was an easy selection for us [because of injuries] but we showed it’s not about ‘name’ football it’s about being competitive, to behave like a team.
Even if you have big players, big names, if they don’t play like today, trying to help the team in a defensive situation or when we have the ball to believe in every single offensive action we can score, then it’s impossible because the Premier League is so competitive.Mauricio Pochettino

Jamie Redknapp insists Chelsea need to hold onto manager Mauricio Pochettino after the last few weeks’ drastic improvement.
I look at it and think when you’re trying to build a young team – in the summer they’re going to need to bring in some experienced heads to help them because they’re going to lose Thiago Silva – you need continuity on the bench.
The last thing they need to be doing right now is changing the manager. For a number of reasons.
One, there aren’t many candidates out there. I’ve always been a big fan of him, especially with young players. I like what I saw there [in his interview]. I saw anger in him.
There have been times this year when he’s been a little bit passive, trying to be everyone’s friend. He wasn’t like that as a player and he wasn’t like that in his Tottenham days. I think they’d be crazy to get rid of himJamie RedknappSky Sports

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou made no excuses after a poor performance against Chelsea.
We lacked a real sort of conviction and positive mindset in our football. We didn’t really have any fluency, any sort of aggression with and without the ball.
It’s a bit unlike us because if nothing else we’ve always been competitive, especially in the first half it was missing today.
It wasn’t a great night and it’s fair to say we didn’t play anywhere near the sort of football and didn’t have the mindset that I expect us to have.
That’s on me and I’ve got to take responsibility for that ultimately as I’m the one who is putting them out there and preparing them for it.
We were so far off it and I’ve got to look at myself and see how I’m preparing my team for it.Ange Postecoglou

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou explained he left James Maddison out of his starting line-up because he felt he needed “some legs” against Chelsea’s pace.
I thought we needed to freshen up the team.
I thought we needed some legs today as they’ve obviously got a real mobile and quick front three and four and I just felt we needed some legs in the midfield.
With Biss [Yves Bissouma] and Pape [Matar Sarr] coming in, and Deki [Dejan Kulusevski], I thought it would help us. Fair to say it didn’t work though.Ange Postecoglou

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino insists he doesn’t know if he will continue in the hotseat next season after a turbulent campaign.
But Pochettino insists he is very proud of his young team and the way they reacted to such a difficult start to the campaign.
It’s difficult to see every single week that I’m under scrutiny and judgement. But it’s not my decision to be here or not to be here.
What can I say? If we want the history of Chelsea, it’s a lot of work to do. We will see if we have time to be in this way.
My feeling that I’m so, so proud that all these guys, all the squad we have, 25-27 players. We want the best for them and until the last day we’re going to try to help them.Mauricio PochettinoSky Sports
