Brighton 2 AEK Athens 3: Seagulls’ first ever European game ends in heartbreak as Greeks spoil the party

BRIGHTON’S big day was ruined as AEK Athens crashed the European party in Sussex.Roberto De Zerbi’s side were given a stark lesson in what is needed to compete at this level as the 13-time Greek champions made the most of a string of defensive mistakes.

The day all Seagulls fans have been dreaming of since the end of last season got off to a shocker with an early goal from Djibril Sidibe.
Joao Pedro scored two penalties either side of Mijat Gacinovic’s first half goal, before Ezequiel Ponce plundered a late winner.
De Zerbi was without striker Evan Ferguson and captain Lewis Dunk, who will have been devastated to miss such a huge moment in the club’s history.
Brighton’s story is a wonderful and romantic one, but the Greek champions weren’t content with playing along in the Seagulls’ big celebration.
Jesus Almeyda’s men were ready to rough up their usually stylish hosts and took the lead through a goal detail-driven De Zerbi will have hated.
Former Everton full-back Sidibe loitered on the edge of the box unmarked at a corner, drifted in while Kaoru Mitoma was looking elsewhere and powered a superb header into the top corner.
Brighton did not have their usual control, but a burst of chances brought about the first equaliser.
Debutant Ansu Fati saw a rasping strike tipped behind by Cican Stankovic. Igor Julio then headed agonisingly wide from the corner.

Brighton had settled and were driving forward, forcing their way towards a leveller – though help was needed from VAR.
Pedro raced into the AEK box down the right and cut back looking to let loose an effort, only to be clipped and brought down by Ehsan Hajsafi.
Referee Kristo Tohver initially thought he had been deceived, initially booking the former Watford man for diving.
But a review was ordered and the Estonian official didn’t take long to realise his mistake.
Having won the spot kick, Pedro converted confidently – firing low and left to claim his place in the Brighton history books with the club’s first ever goal in Europe.
They may have got things going at the sharp end, but set pieces were still proving a problem for the Seagulls, and Athens quickly struck again – leaving chairman Tony Bloom, the architect of his club’s fairytale, grimacing in the stands.
Hajsafi, who was later stretchered off with a neck brace following a clash of heads, whipped a deep free-kick over a high Brighton defensive line.
It sparked chaos as Jan-Paul van Hecke’s attempted clearance deflected off Garcia and onto the outstretched boot of Gacinovic past Steele.
The second goal was unfortunate, but the first half was a lesson in European street smarts from a far more experienced side.
But Brighton kept pushing and their new strike partnership of Pedro and VAR came up trumps again after the break.
The Brazilian striker wriggled past Damian Szymaski in the box and immediately hit the deck.
Again his appeals were waved away and again a review was needed, replays showing that Szymaski had in fact walloped Pedro on the shin.
The £30million man again sent the keeper the wrong way, this time finishing to the right.
He should have won it shortly after too, firing straight at Stankovic when one-on-one either side of chances for Mitoma and Pascal Gross.
It looked like a dream winner would arrive, but then the hosts left themselves uncharacteristically wide open again as Niclas Eliasson and Ponce were left with just Tariq Lamptey to beat and did so with ease.
The Seagulls could not make the most of 13 minutes added time, with Simon Adringra, Gross, Solly March and Van Hecke all going close, the final chance being blocked by one of their own in Igor.

Gaffer needs to get squad firing
It must seem a tough period for Erik ten Hag in his Man Utd tenure.
Getting his side to bounce back and start showing their potential may be the toughest task of his time at Old Trafford so far.
Things are not going their way at the moment and it will need the manager to work with his squad to turn things around.
That starts with Burnley on the weekend.

Keeper fronts up media over mistake
Andre Onana gave an interview with the media after the game, despite his howler for the first goal.
It shows some mental strength from Onana to give an interview despite how dejected he was from his error.
The ex-Inter Milan stopper admitted that he was at fault in them getting nothing out of this game and that he will try to bounce back, feeling he still has a lot to prove.
Fans may be gutted right now but he has shown he is made of the right stuff to take that one on the chin and face up to his mistake.
    United have that losing feeling
Winning can become a habit, but so can losing.
Man Utd lost their fourth game of the season this evening and need to do something to address their poor form.
Ten Hag will have some work to do but it all starts again when they travel to Burnley on the weekend in the Premier League.
Kane gets first European goal for Bayern
It was always going to happen, Harry Kane on the scoresheet against the side who wanted to sign him.
Albeit from the penalty spot, it was a clinical spot-kick from the English striker.
He seemed to enjoy scoring against Man Utd.

The man, the myth, the legend
Joshua Kimmich was his usual brilliant self this evening.
The amount of ground he covers for his side is mind-bending.
He uses the ball so well, bringing attackers into play.

FT: Bayern Munich 4-3 Man Utd
It is a seven-goal thriller in the Allianz Arena.
Bayern Munich could have scored more however.
The German champions also struck the woodwork twice.

FT: Bayern Munich 4-3 Man Utd
What a bizarre game this has been tonight.
Just at the death, Fernandes whips in a free kick and Casemiro is there with a deft header to score.
Not enough time for them to think about getting that equaliser.
Bayern will be happy with the three points.
    Goal – Casemiro (Man Utd)
    Bayern Munich 4-2 Man Utd
90+3. Each time Man Utd have managed to find a way back into this game, Bayern immediately douse the flames of hope.
Tel smashes the ball into the roof of the net, no chance for Onana.
This has not been a game for defensive coaches to brag about.

Goal – Mathys Tel (Bayern Munich)
    Bayern Munich 3-2 Man Utd
90+1. We are going to have four additional minutes.
Bayern counter attack and as the ball is crossed in, Muller slides in to get to it.
The ball strikes the post and comes back out.
    Bayern Munich 3-2 Man Utd
    89. The hosts are terrible in defence.
As Man Utd come forward, Casemiro steps on the ball and falls over.
He then kicks it, laying on the ground, and beats the Bayern keeper.
This should be on Comedy Central this game.

    Goal – Casemiro (Man Utd)
    Bayern Munich 3-1 Man Utd
    87. Muller comes on for Kane, Tel for Sane.
The England captain gets a good reception from the Bayern fans.
Tuchel is looking to rest some of his key players now.
    Bayern Munich 3-1 Man Utd
    85. You cannot see a way back into this game for the visitors with so little time remaining.
Thomas Tuchel will be happy with this result as a start to their campaign in the Champions League.
They have looked vulnerable defensively but have more than made up for it going forward.
    Bayern Munich 3-1 Man Utd
    83. McTominay has been like Bambi on ice since coming on.
Bayern made a mistake in defence but before the midfielder can seize upon the error, he slips again.
Bayern counter and Choupo-Moting gets a shot away but Onana saves.
    Bayern Munich 3-1 Man Utd
    81. Martial comes on for Hojlund and Garnacho comes on for Pellistri.
Bayern are guilty of trying to walk it into the net now.
They had players queueing up for that one but Choupo-Moting gets dispossessed taking too much time on the ball.
    Bayern Munich 3-1 Man Utd
    79. As Bayern pass the ball around, Choupo-Moting makes a run.
It is fed into his path and shoots from distance.
Onana gets a fingertip to it to tip it over the bar.
    Bayern Munich 3-1 Man Utd
    77. Somewhere Roy Keane is having a meltdown over Onana.
When you see how animated he used to get about De Gea, it would have been comedy gold to see his reaction to that first goal.
Bayern continue to knock on the door but United are managing to keep them at bay.

    Bayern Munich 3-1 Man Utd
    75. Musiala is coming off for Choupo-Moting.
He gets a standing ovation from the Allianz Arena.
Unbelievable that he is still only 20-years-old.
    Bayern Munich 3-1 Man Utd
    73. Erik ten Hag needs to do something about their defending.
This is now three games in succession that they have conceded three goals.
Even when they have their full compliment of players available, they always look like you can get at them.

    Bayern Munich 3-1 Man Utd

    71. Bayern are happy to keep the ball now and bide their time.
They have a lead to defend now, they know United have to chase the game not them.
Tuchel’s side will just look to pick them off on the break.
    Bayern Munich 3-1 Man Utd
    69. Christian Eriksen is replaced by Scott McTominay.
It shows the lack of attacking options on the bench.
Must have been a tough choice not to bring on one of the three keepers, needing to get some goals.
    Bayern Munich 3-1 Man Utd
    67. Man Utd have to commit more players forward.
As this is a group game, there is no second leg.
Erik ten Hag’s side need to try and get something out of this.
