Norris manages to hold off Russell, just.
    Credit: Reuters
Lap 59/62 – Sainz leads, Norris second
Both Mercedes have race leader Sainz in their sights.
They have to try and deal with Lando Norris firstly though.
Verstappen has managed to move up to sixth place.
Lap 57/62 – Sainz leads, Norris second
Norris is closing the gap on leader Sainz.
The Ferrari driver has work cut out with three cars all vying for his position.
This should be an exciting finish to the race.
Verstappen is over 30 seconds behind the race leaders.
Lap 55/62 – Sainz leads, Norris second
Russell is on the tail of Leclerc now.
He can actually do his teammate some favours as makes life more difficult for him.
Not for long as Russell takes the Ferrari at turn fourteen.
Hamilton uses DRS well to take Leclerc also.
Lap 53/62 – Sainz leads, Norris second
As it stands, Liam Lawson is still in the points in 9th place.
What an achievement that would be in his third race.
Meanwhile, Russell keeps on closing the gap on the front three.
    Credit: Getty
Lap 51/62 – Sainz leads, Norris second
George Russell is only 11.5 seconds off the leader now.
The two Mercedes drivers will be going at it from now until the end of the race on those new tyres.
Sainz, Norris and Leclerc will need to have some defence to keep them at bay.
Lap 49/62 – Sainz leads, Norris second
Alonso is having a terrible day at the office.
He served his five second penalty when he pitted, it was a terrible pit stop as they struggled to get the back end of the car up.
He overshoots a corner but fortunately gets restarted before a safety car was needed.
Alonso finds himself back in 17th place however.
Lap 47/62 – Sainz leads, Norris second
Both Mercedes cars decide to use the safety car to pit.
They are both out there now on a new set of medium tyres.
The three cars in front of them are on older hard compound tyres.
It could be a fantastic finish to this race.
Lap 45/62 – Sainz leads, Russell second
Ocon is out of the race it seems, more importantly, his car is still out on the track.
A virtual safety car has been issued.
The Alpine driver screams on the team radio, he is devastated, he was having a great drive there.
Lap 43/62 – Sainz leads, Russell second
After they both pit, Verstappen is now in 15th place, Perez in 18th place.
That is not something you expect to see with these Red Bull cars.
Someone take a picture of that leaderboard is unique to say the least from what we have seen this season.
The pair need a safety car to come back into contention now.
    Credit: Getty
Lap 41/62 – Sainz leads, Russell second
Sainz is driving well and frustrating Russell in second.
He is not giving him the chance to take him, while conserving his tyres.
Perez heads to the pits, not surprising seeing that car snake out on corners.
Lap 39/62 – Sainz leads, Russell second
Ocon goes past Alonso on a corner where they seemed no space for two Formula 1 cars, wild.
Sainz is on the team radio asking them to tell him when they think he should start pushing it.
Confirmation that is trying to manage his tyres for this race.
Lap 37/62 – Sainz leads, Russell second
It will be interesting to see when both of the Red Bull’s decide to come into the pit lane.
As we see Perez taking a corner, the car snakes out at the back.
It is evident that they have no grip whatsoever.
Lap 35/62 – Sainz leads, Russell second
The front five drivers are only separated by around 5.5 seconds.
There is then a similar gap from fifth place to Verstappen in sixth.
Alonso is starting to put some pressure on Perez in seventh.
    Credit: Splash
Lap 33/62 – Sainz leads, Russell second
Verstappen is on his team radio telling them the tyre is dead and it is like ‘driving on ice’.
That is not good news for the rest of the field as the Dutchman has done 30 laps on the hard compound.
Their plan was not to pit again but that would mean 40 laps on their hard tyres.
Lap 31/62 – Sainz leads, Russell second
Russell is on the team radio stating how slow Sainz is going.
He thinks he is either trying to manage his tyres or looking to get cars to back up behind him.
If it is the latter it is working with both Norris and Hamilton less than a second behind him.
Lap 29/62 – Sainz leads, Russell second
Verstappen is down to sixth place now with Perez in seventh.
It does not look like it is going to be Red Bull’s day today.
Mercedes seem to be in a strong position to dominate this race currently.
Lap 27/62 – Sainz leads, Russell second
Lando Norris is the latest driver to take Max Verstappen.
The Red Bull cars are struggling at the moment.
Sergio Perez is complaining that Lewis Hamilton needs to give his place back after gaining an advantage by going off-track.
Lap 25/62 – Sainz leads, Verstappen second
It is all change now with the Red Bull’s in the top five.
George Russell takes advantage and makes a move on Max Verstappen to move into second.
Lewis Hamilton manages to get ahead of Sergio Perez although he went off the track to do so.
Red Bull seem to be struggling for grip on their hard compound tyres.

Full time: Man Utd 1 Brighton 3
Well, what a result this is for the Seagulls.
United fans aren’t happy and jeer at the final whistle.
It really was the same old story, scrappy in possession and no clinical edge.
Ten Hag’s subs proved controversial too, with supporters furious when Hojlund was removed from the field.

    Man Utd 1 Brighton 3 – Close!
90+4. Hannibal goes into the book for a reckless challenge.
And it opens the way for Fati to burst into a one-on-one with Onana.
But the Barcelona man hits it wrong and sends the ball wide.
    Should have been four.
    Man Utd 1 Brighton 3
90+2. Old Trafford has almost emptied out alraedy.
The fans have seen enough and are voting with their feet.
But the away supporters are in jubilant voice and won’t be moving for a while.
    Man Utd 1 Brighton 3
    90. We will have SIX minutes of added time here.
United must find a goal now.
Garnacho breaks into the box after a speedy run but he is offside.
    Man Utd 1 Brighton 3
    89. Fati gets a strike off but it’s well handled by Onana.
Brighton are happy to regroup and let United pass it around their defence.
The hosts are struggling to get out of their own half at the minute.
We’ll find out how much added time there is shortly.
    Man Utd 1 Brighton 3
    87. Time’s ticking at Old Trafford and there’s no sign of life from United.
In fact, the change in personnel only looks to have strengthened Brighton’s resolve.
And any time United get hold of the ball, the Seagulls swarm to regain possession immediately.
    Man Utd 1 Brighton 3 – Subs
    85. Brighton make their final change with Evan Ferguson on for Simon Adingra.
Meanwhile, Alejandro Garnacho, Facundo Pellistri and Aaron-Wan Bissaka are on for United.
Lisandro Martinez, Scott McTominay and Sergio Reguilon come off.
    Man Utd 1 Brighton 3
    83. There’s certainly been goals galore this game.
Will there be more in the next seven minutes?
After the quickfire double less than 10 minutes ago, you wouldn’t bet against it.

    Man Utd 1 Brighton 3
    81. Reguilon takes on Adingra and wins before launching a cross.
Dunk is on hand to clear for a corner, which is taken by Eriksen.
But it’s a terrible effort and cleared by Brighton.
United then plead for a free-kick on Rashford but it’s ignored by the ref.
    Man Utd 1 Brighton 3 – Save!
    79. Mitoma is in and almost makes it four!
But Onana stays strong and makes a good block.
    Man Utd 1 Brighton 3
    78. Brighton are trying to slow things down here.
The crowd jeer as the Seagulls take their time over a goal kick.
United win the ball back quickly.
But they can’t find a way through Brighton’s midfield.
    Man Utd 1 Brighton 3 – Subs
    76. Subs from the visitors.
James Milner and Billy Gilmour are on.
Mahmoud Dahoud and Tariq Lamptey come off.
    Man Utd 1 Brighton 3
    75. Wow, some great action there.
One fine goal from Pedro topped by an instant reply from Hannibal.
But Brighton still have that two-goal cushion.
Can United find one more quickly?
    Goal – Man Utd 1 Brighton 3
    There’s an immediate reply!
And it’s the sub Mejbri, who fires in a howitzer from distance!
The midfielder controls the ball before cracking off a long shot.
He wheels away in celebration and it’s game on again!
    Goal – Man Utd 0 Brighton 3
    It’s THREE for Brighton!
Lamptey dinks his way down the left and plays in Joao Pedro.
The Brazilian then fires in a cracker from distance, with Onana nowhere near.
United fans are leaving in their droves now, there’s no way back.
    Man Utd 0 Brighton 2
    69. Just over 20 minutes left and United look no closer to finding that key breakthrough.
Eriksen is now sitting deepest in midfield, with Hannibal pushing forward.
Yet it’s left United exposed, and Brighton almost get in with Fati before Martinez steps across the youngster.
The Stretford End is restless, with many wanting to see Alejandro Garnacho come on.
    Man Utd 0 Brighton 2
    67. Instant impact from Hannibal as he wins a free-kick in a good position.
Rashford stands over it before lashing a shot at goal.
But the effort is a weak one and Steele is able to catch it easily.
    Man Utd 0 Brighton 2 – Subs
    65. Changes from both sides here.
Adam Lallana and Danny Welbeck are both off.
They’re replaced by Barcelona loanee Ansu Fati and summer signing Joao Pedro.
Meanwhile, United have hauled off Casemiro and Rasmus Hojlund for Hannibal Mejbri and Anthony Martial.
Fans loudly booed when Hojlund’s number went up…
    Man Utd 0 Brighton 2
    62. The home crowd are getting noisier as they urge their players on.
United get a break down the right through Dalot, who beats his man before chipping the ball onwards.
The ball is sent back out though, and Brighton are able to reclaim possession.
    Man Utd 0 Brighton 2
    60. Gross is looking hungry since his goal.
He is keeping a sharp press on Lindelof, with Welbeck constantly chasing down Martinez and preventing United from playing out.
Rashford finally gets some luck and darts down the left.
But Gross charges back to snuff out the danger.
    Credit: Reuters
    Man Utd 0 Brighton 2
    58. A rare spell of possession for United sees an opportunity fall to Fernandes.
The captain lines up a shot from distance, but his effort lacks any real power.
Hojlund attempts to spark some life into the hosts with a decent dribble.
But Rashford’s shot is deflected out for a corner, with the resulting set-piece hit into the side-netting by Fernandes.
    Man Utd 0 Brighton 2
    56. It’s a long way back from here…
United have not been on it since coming out for the second half.
Brighton were given too much time on the ball, allowing them to craft another opportunity.
And United paid the ultimate price, with two goals now needed just to level things up.
    Goal – Man Utd 0 Brighton 2
    53. It’s another for the Seagulls!
Brighton work it from right to left, allowing Mitoma to drive at McTominay.
He knocks it to Lamptey, who in turns plays in Gross.
And the German shimmies before smashing the ball past Onana.

Newcastle 1 Brentford 0: Howe’s blushes spared by Flekken howler as Wilson penalty wins the points for lacklustre Toon

EDDIE HOWE was spared more flak by flaky Brentford keeper Mark Flekken. Newcastle CEO Darren Eales admitted before the season that he had to calm the Saudi chiefs down after a draw with Crystal Palace in January.
Callum Wilson hails what could prove a vital penalty winner for NewcastleCredit: EPA
Wilson slotted home the only goal on 64 minutesCredit: Getty
That point extended the Magpies unbeaten run to 15, so you started to wonder how they would react if this ended in a loss or turgid stalemate on the back of three straight defeats.
And at no point did Newcastle look like winning this one until the dodgy Dutch stopper – a summer signing from Freiburg – handed the Tynesiders a lifeline on a platter by needlessly taking Anthony Gordon out on the byline for a penalty just after the hour.
Callum Wilson buried it, making it 14 goals in his last 17 Prem games and taking him level with Les Ferdinand’s Toon total.
This was about the win but the Tynesiders were once again well off it.
Famed for their intensity under Howe, it is sorely lacking right now.
Despite that, three points stops their mini-crisis reaching boiling point as they head to face AC Milan on Tuesday for their Champions League return following a 20-year absence.
Now up to 11th in the Prem, and with Sheffield United next, this could prove a huge turning point – even if it was another performance to concern Howe.
He made five changes to try and kickstart the season, with Harvey Barnes handed a first start and Wilson, Sven Botman, Elliot Anderson and Sean Longstaff also in.

This already had a must-win feel to it the Mags manager wanted to avoid heading to Milan with further questions over his future.
Yet they could and perhaps should have been behind inside three minutes when Aaron Hickey – finding a ridiculous amount of space inside the box – was denied by Nick Pope from a tight angle.
But that warning shot hardly sparked Newcastle into life with Brentford the far better side early on.
The hosts were lethargic off the ball, sloppy on it and their left side was under constant bombardment.
Expecting to see their side come out firing, the crowd were not impressed.
Yoane Wissa was a whisker away from converting Mathias Jensen’s wicked cross 23 minutes in.
The Geordies finally had a shot five minutes later, and from the resulting corner Bruno Guimaraes’ header from point-blank range at the back post was just about kept out by Mark Flekken.
The first-half was instantly forgettable and Newcastle needed inspiration, yet they started the second just as slack.
Wilson then bundled the ball in following a goalmouth scramble after the unconvincing Flekken fluffed a punched clearance, but Craig Pawson immediately gave a foul.
Wissa squandered another half-chance at the other end seconds later yet, shooting towards the Gallowgate, it was Newcastle pressing – and they were handed a penalty just after the hour for Flekken’s foul on Gordon.
Deadly Wilson made no mistake – taking his season’s tally to three – firing over the outstretched Flekken to the mighty relief of St James’.
It was far from over though but just as Brentford threatened to get back in, ref Craig Pawson pointed to the spot again for a Bryan Mbeumo handball – only to reverse his decision after looking at the monitor.
There were nine minutes of injury time but Newcastle held on without any major frights for a priceless victory.

    Steve Clarke signs us off
The final thoughts of Scotland boss Steve Clarke brings about the end of SunSport’s live coverage of the latest instalment of the oldest international rivalry in footie history.
He told Channel Four: “First half, we didn’t really get started, couldn’t get hold of the ball.
“Second half, we showed a better intensity, and when it goes 2-1 we had the chance to be in the game, but England scored another one and it was always going to be difficult to get back in.
“England started like the top side they are. We’re not there, but we’re trying to develop, trying to get better. We’ve always come back stronger from adversity, and let’s hope that’s the case [here].
“Andy [Robertson] made a mistake for the second goal, that happens in football. We’re capable of scoring goals against top teams, and hopefully we take that to Spain next month.
“When you play against a side as good as England, you have to get everything 100% correct. We didn’t do that tonight, and that’s why we lost the game.
“The camp’s been a success, because we’ve got a perfect record in the qualifying group. We’re in a good place.”
    Hey Jude
Jude Bellingham is refusing to rest on his laurels following his scintillating start to the season for club and country.
The Real Madrid and England ace – who has bagged six goals so far this campaign, told beIN Sports: “I’m always learning.
“I’m so lucky to have played with so many great players with my last club and even more so at my new club which is a big boost for me and for my own confidence to play with such great players.
“I’m just learning all the time really. I’m trying to add more attributes to my game and trying to affect the ones I’ve already got.
“If I can keep being effective in goal and doing the things that I do well already overall in my game then I think I could be doing well and hopefully have a good season.
“So it’s important that I keep it up.”

    Ferdinand’s message to Southgate
Former England defender Rio Ferdinand has urged Gareth Southgate to “build” his team around Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden.
He tweeted: BUILD THIS TEAM AROUND… BELLINGHAM / FODEN.
    “Simples!”

    England ‘far better’
Former Scotland defender Willie Miller offered no excuses for Steve Clarke’s defeat to England.
He told the BBC: “We didn’t get nearly close enough to England in the first half.
“The fear was it could get to an embarrassing score, but 3-1 was deserved.
“However better that second half was from Scotland, England really took the foot off the gas.
“Hands up, we were beaten by a far better side.”

    Golden Generation?
Graeme Souness certainly thinks this crop of England stars is the best the nation has ever produced.
And he said it straight to the face of former Three Lions star Joe Cole, who was part of the star-studded 2006 World Cup squad.
The Scot said: “This is the golden generation.
“Forget, you know, with Frank [Lampard], Steven Gerrard and Paul Scholes. They haven’t got a strength in depth.”
    Souness slams Scotland
Graeme Souness has hit out at Scotland for their display against the Auld Enemy.
He said: “This is a passionate football crowd – we gave them nothing to shout about tonight.
“And I accept that England were fabulous and are a fabulous team.
“But I think from Scotland’s point of view, they couldn’t get the crowd involved and they didn’t show the required aggression.
“It is a friendly, but it’s a Scotland-England game. I see people picking each other off the ground and I’m like, ‘Mmm, that shouldn’t happen in this game.'”

    Souness speaks
Former Scotland international Graeme Souness didn’t mince his words on his nation’s loss.
“When push comes to shove, there is an enormous gap between England and Scotland.”
Scotland 1-3 England – Full time
The travelling Three Lions fans roar with delight as the final whistle blows at Hampden Park.
A stellar showing from Gareth Southgate’s troops, with the exception of Harry Maguire.
Jude Bellingham – who has hit the ground running at Real Madrid – was undoubtedly the man of the match.
    Scotland 1-3 England
    90. Harry Maguire is being trolled by fans as chants of “Harry Maguire he scored coz you’re s**t” ring throughout the stadium.
No doubt they’ll be a further blow to the defender’s already low confidence.

    Scotland 1-3 England
    83. More changes for England.
Man of the match Jude Bellingham has been replaced by Conor Gallagher.
And Harry Kane has been taken off for Callum Wilson.
    Scotland 1-3 England
    80. Harry Kane has had his say in the Battle of Britain.
England’s record goalscorer cooly slotted the ball into the far corner past Angus Gunn after beautifully collecting a pass from Jude Bellingham.
Bellingham deserves the plaudits, however, as he ghosted past two players and laid on the perfect ball to his skipper to restore the Three Lions’ two-goal advantage.

    Scotland 1-2 England
    75. Jude Bellingham almosts restores the two-goal lead after ghosting past three Scotland defenders.
His deflected effort, however, is well saved by Angus Gunn.
    Scotland 1-2 England
    72. Eberechi Eze has just wasted a golden opportunity to restore England’s 2-1 lead.
The Crystal Palace man bore down on goal thanks to a beautiful touch.
But he fails to put the ball past the advancing Angus Gunn.
    Scotland 1-2 England
    70. John McGinn wastes a golden opportunity to level the scores with a header inside the box.
The Aston Villa man ghosted past Lewis Dunk to latch onto a beautiful pass from Andy Robertson.
But he fails to direct his header on target and Hampden groans in disappointment.
    Scotland 1-2 England
    68. Scotland are back in it thanks to an own-goal from Harry Maguire.
The under-pressure Manchester United tried to cut out a cross from Andy Robertson but accidentally put the ball past Aaron Ramsdale.

    Scotland 0-2 England
    66. Scotland are building momentum here and look capable of troubling the defence.
    Scotland 0-2 England
    63. Ryan Christie tries his luck from around 25 yards out after latching on to a loose ball.
But the Bournemouth man’s left-footed is well wide of Aaron Ramsdale’s far post.
    Scotland 0-2 England
    58. Steve Clarke has made a double change in a desperate bid to get his side back into the match.
Che Adams has been replaced by Ryan Christie.
Billy Gilmour, meanwhile, has given way for Lyndon Dykes
    Scotland 0-2 England
    58. Harry Kane fires a shot over the bar and appeals for a corner.
Replays show the ball did deflect over the bar thanks to a knick from Kieran Tierney.
    Scotland 0-2 England
    52. Harry Maguire is being mocked by Scotland fans every time he takes a touch of the ball or makes a successful pass.
Not exactly what the already under-pressure Manchester Unted man would’ve wanted.
    Credit: Reuters
    Scotland 0-2 England
    49. Billy Gilmour wastes a golden opportunity to reduce the deficit.
The former Chelsea defender does well to create himself an angle for a shot from outside the 18-yard box.
But he curls his effort high over the bar, much to the disappointment of the Hampden faithful.
Scotland 0-2 England – Maguire enters the fray
Harry Maguire has come on for Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi.
It may be a friendly, but Maguire can ill-afford a poor showing here given that he’s surplus to requirements at Manchester United.
Gareth Southgate has been nothing but loyal to the world’s most expensive defender.
But even he can only show blind faith for so long if the former Leicester man continues to struggle.
    Scotland 0-2 England – Foden’s magic
Here’s a closer look at Phil Foden’s incredibly innovative finish which broke the deadlock.
Incredible ingenuity from the diminutive Manchester City man.

    Scotland 0-2 England – Half-time
England are in cruise control here at Hampden.
The intense pre-match atmosphere and booing of the God Save the King has been the most resistance they’ve encountered so far.
Plenty of food for thought for Scotland gaffer Steve Clarke.

CHELSEA legend John Terry is on the verge of agreeing a deal to manage Saudi Pro League side Al-Shabbab, SunSport can exclusively reveal. The former England defender has had stints as an assistant coach with Aston Villa and Leicester, but now he’s set to be Saudi’s latest managerial recruit, following in the footsteps of Steven Gerrard.
Meanwhile, Liverpool have been offered a staggering £215million for winger Mohammed Salah.
Al-Ittihad made the eye-watering bid just hours after the Reds rejected £150m, and the Saudi Pro League window is still open until Thursday.
Elsewhere, Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho is reportedly wanted by Steven Gerrard’s Al Ettifaq.

    Demarai Gray deal details
Demarai Gray has joined Al-Ettifaq after a turbulent exit from Everton.
Gray moved to the Middle East following in an £8million deal between the two clubs.
The 27-year-old penned a four-year deal with Steven Gerrard’s side earlier this week after falling out with the Toffees’ manager Sean Dyche.
The winger hit out at Dyche last week on social media after falling out of favour at Goodison Park with the following post:
Everton fans have always been great with me. But it’s so difficult to play for someone who doesn’t show you respect as a personDemarai Gray
    Rooney linked with Birmingham
DC United manager Wayne Rooney could be set for a shock return to English football as Birmingham are keeping tabs.
Rooney, 37, cast doubt over his future with the MLS club earlier this week with his contract set to expire in December.
And now the Manchester United legend could be given a way out as the Championship side emerge as a possible destination.
The Blues, part-owned by NFL legend Tom Brady, made a strong start to the season under John Eustace – who has a contract until 2025.
SunSport understands the club is preparing for the eventuality of Eustace leaving the club.
There is no indication he will be sacked but he has been mooted as a possible successor to Michael Beale at Rangers should the Scottish giants seek a replacement.
    Terry to Al-Shabab
Chelsea legend John Terry has verbally agreed to become the head coach of Al-Shabab.
According to Sky Sports, Terry is set for his first ever role as a manager.
The 42-year-old was approached by the Saudi club’s chiefs around a month ago and has been offered a contract of at least two years and up to four if it is rubber stamped as expected.
The former England international is currently working on a one-year deal as a consultant in the Blues’ academy.
The West Londoners have already said they will not stand in his way as a mark of respect to his service to them over almost two decades.
That is despite the fact a departure will be a big blow to their youth team losing such a figurehead from their camp.
    Gerrard eyes Sancho
Al-Ettifaq are keeping tabs on Manchester United ace Jadon Sancho before the Saudi Arabian summer transfer window slams shut tonight.
According to CBS, Steven Gerrard’s side is set to make a dramatic last-minute loan move for Sancho,.
The winger appears to have no future at Old Trafford having fallen out with manager Erik Ten Hag after lashing out on social media against him.
The England international’s options are obviously limited but Saudi Arabia and Turkey represent potential options.
And it appears the 23-year-old could be following Demarai Gray over to Al-Ettifaq to ply his trade under manager Gerrard.
Mohamed Salah – What we know
Al-Ittihad are determined to sign Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah today before the Saudi transfer window slams shut at 10pm BST.
The Reds have been adamant they are unwilling to sell Salah and their resolve has truly been put to the test.
As per SunSport’s Steve Brenner, the Saudi champions offered a world record £215million for the star forward.
The Egypt international has been offered a staggering £2.45m a week to quit Anfield with extra incentives.
The 31-year-old has been tempted with a large percentage of shirt sales, a £55,000 win bonus as well as ambassadorial roles for at least three major Saudi companies for the duration of his contract.
That could be worth an extra £18m with each firm willing to pay the ex-Roma star £6m each.
    Al-Ettifaq troll Liverpool and rivals
Al-Ettifaq have trolled rivals Al-Ittihad in their announcement video for Demarai Gray.
The video used a retro-arcade style and showed the team browsing players to buy from the Premier League.
The team picked Liverpol and attempted to pick to choose Salah before an image of an angry Jurgen Klopp popped up saying “NO!”
The ‘player’ then scrolls across to sign Gray.
The extraordinary clip alludes to Al-Ittihad’s transfer pursuit of Salah and the side may try one last time before the Saudi deadline tonight.
Lyon want to appoint Julen Lopetgui
Lyon have made former Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui their primary target for their vacant managerial role.
The club sacked Laurent Blanc following a poor start to the season and had attempted to appoint Graham Potter earlier today.
Potter though, did not feel the timing was right on the move.
Lyon have now turned their efforts towards appointing Lopetegui who left Wolves this summer due to a dispute over transfers.

Al-Ettifaq to make offer for Sancho
Al-Ettifaq are set to make a dramatic last-minute loan move for Jadon Sancho, according to CBS.
The winger appears to have no future at the club having fallen out with manager Erik Ten Hag.
His options are obviously limited by the European transfer being closed but Saudi Arabia and Turkey represent potential options.
And it appears he could be following Demarai Gray over to Al-Ettifaq to ply his trade under manager Steven Gerrard.
Demarai Gray presented as an Al-Ettifaq player
Demarai Gray has officially been unveiled as an Al-Ettifaq player after penning a four year deal with the club.
The winger will link up with former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson as well as Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, who is the Dammam side’s manager.
Everton will receive £8million for his signature – a significant profit on the £1.8m they paid to sign him in 2021.

Manchester City sold Cole Palmer after he placed demands on Guardiola
FourFourTwo report that Manchester City sold Cole Palmer after he asked Pep Guardiola for increased playing time this season.
Having made 40 appearances in three seasons since making the step up to senior football, the 21-year-old wanted to become a more regular member of the starting XI and believed the departure of Mahrez opened that door for him.
However, Pep could not guarantee that Palmer would be given minutes going forward this season.
So when Chelsea made their £45million offer, all sides welcomed the potential exit.
Lingard to play for West Ham today
Jesse Lingard will play for West Ham today in a behind-closed-doors friendly.
The club are weighing up giving Lingard a cotract after his release by Nottingham Forest.
He has been training with the club over the summer and Moyes still thinks fondly of his time with West Ham on a short term loan in 2021.
Lingard did however reject The Hammers last summer to join Forest, which has led to some reluctance on the club’s side to give him a playing contract just yet.
    Details on Gravenberch transfer
The Athletic report that Liverpool had held talks regarding the signing of Ryan Gravenberch all the way back in April as they looked to reinforce their midfield.
The signing had been presented as an opportunistic one in some sections of the media – with United also reportedly being in for the midfielder on loan.
But it turns out Liverpool had been in regular contact with the player and his father from April onwards, with Gravenberch growing frustrated over his role at Bayern.
Thomas Tuchel had limited the player’s game time as he prefers to operate with two out and out 6’s rather than a player like Gravenberch who is much more box to box.
Gravenberch’s £35million transfer was confirmed in the closing days of the window with Bayern finally realising they were better off cashing in rather than keeping a player that was unhappy at his lack of game time.
    Demarai Gray signs for Al-Ettifaq
Demarai Gray has signed for Steven Gerrard’s Al-Ettifaq.
The winger joins the club on a four year deal, with Everton receiving £8million for his services.
Gray made his desire to leave Everton clear last week, posting on his Instagram story: “[It’s] difficult to play for someone who doesn’t show you respect as a person”
Everton have made a healthy profit on Gray, having signed him for just £1.8million in 2021.
John Terry to become Al-Shabbab head coach
John Terry has verbally agreed to become the head coach of Al-Shabbab, according to Sky Sports.
The role will be John Terry’s first as a manager.
Terry, 42, was approached by bosses at Al-Shabab around a month ago and has been offered a contract of at least two years and up to four if it is rubber stamped as expected.
He is currently working on a one year deal as a consultant in the Chelsea academy.
Chelsea have already said they will not stand in his way as a mark of respect to his service to them over almost two decades – even though it will be a big blow to their youth team losing such a figurehead from their camp.
Eric Dier holds talks with Levy
The Telegraph report that Eric Dier held talks with Daniel Levy this week after being frozen out by new manager Ange Postecoglou.
The talks were apparently cordial, with no suggestion that there has been a row or a fall out between Dier and Postecoglou.
The details of the meeting were kept private but it is likely that Dier wanted clarity on his position within the squad after falling down the pecking order behind 19-year-old centre-back Ashley Phillips.
There is some interest in Dier from clubs in Saudi Arabia so that will be one to keep an eye on today.
Although it is more likely Dier will see out the remaining year of his Spurs contract before moving to a European club on a free next summer.

    Tebas regrets Messi decision
LaLiga boss Javier Tebas has told Fabrizio Romano that he regrets that Lionel Messi will not finish his career at Barcelona.
Messi held talks with the club over the summer about a return to the Nou Camp but ultimately opted to join David Beckham’s Inter Miami.
Tebas said on the matter: “Leo Messi didn’t finish his career at Barcelona because they couldn’t find an agreement.
“I wish he could have finished his career in LaLiga. It would have been the best for him, for me, and for Barcelona.”

    Potter rejects Lyon
Graham Potter has turned down the chance to take over as Lyon boss, according to reports.
Potter was the club’s number one target after they parted ways with Laurent Blanc following a difficult start to the season.
But according to Sky, Potter has turned down the move.
He reportedly felt as though now was not the right time to take on the job, despite being intrigued by the project.
Potter has been out of a job since being sacked by Chelsea in April this year.

John Terry set for Saudi move
John Terry is set to begin his managerial career in the Saudi league as manager of Al-Shabbab.
    Saudi deadline day
Today marks the last day that Saudi clubs can make transfers before the window re-opens in January.
It could be a busy day with many Premier League sides still seeing the league as an ideal place to shift their deadwood for a good price.
But the window also represents a threat for some clubs, particularly Liverpool.
Al-Ittihad are desperate to complete a move for Mo Salah and could test Liverpool’s resolve one last time with a bid north of £200million.
Man Utd could move for Palhinha
Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha.
The Portuguese star looked set to move to Bayern Munich this summer, but saw a deadline day move collapse after the cottagers couldn’t find a suitable replacement.
And The Athletic are now reporting that United could move for the 28-year-old in January.
They would face competition still from Bayern who are said to remain interested in re-entering the race for Palhinha’s signature by The Evening Standard.
Mbappe not ruling out Prem switch
Kylian Mbappe is reportedly open to a move to the Premier League next summer.
The PSG star has just one year remaining on his current deal before he becomes a free agent next year.
And according to L’Equipe, Liverpool is still a potential destination for the French superstar.
However it has been widely reported that Mbappe is keen on a move to Real Madrid with PSG officials convinced a deal has already been agreed.
It is most likely that the World Cup winner will head to Los Blancos next season.

    Pepe heading for Trabzonspor
Nicolas Pepe is reportedly edging closer to a move to Trabzonspor.
According to Foot Mercarto, the Turkish outfit are advancing talks with Pepe over a deal.
The move would see the Ivorian join Trabzonspor on a one-year contract if all goes to plan.
The Gunners winger has also been linked with a move to Besiktas and also to Saudi Arabia, but it looks as if they could be off.
Pepe joined Arsenal in 2019 for £72million, but has failed to live up to his price tag.
    Salah saga ‘over’
Mohamed Salah’s transfer saga with Al-Ittihad is reportedly over.
The Liverpool forward has been linked with a move to the Saudi Arabian outfit with the club said to be willing to pay The Reds up to £200m for his services.
But it looks like the saga could have finally come to an end before Saudi’s transfer deadline day.
According to Foot Mercato, Salah will now stay at Liverpool and won’t be making a move to the Middle East this summer.
The news will come as music to the ears of Jurgen Klopp who has been desperate to keep hold of his star man.

Palace include new Olise release clause
Crystal Palace have reportedly allowed for another release clause in Michael Olise’s new contract with the club.
Olise almost left the Eagles to join Chelsea this summer after The Blues activated the Frenchman’s £35m release clause.
But instead Olise signed a new deal at Selhurst Park that will see him stay in South London until 2027.
However The Evening Standard, have reported that the 21-year-old’s new deal also contains a release clause.
It is said that the clause doesn’t become active until next summer’s transfer window and it is not yet known what kind of fee would trigger it.
West Ham face competition for Lingard
West Ham are reportedly in a battle to sign Jesse Lingard as the free agent assess his options.
Lingard, whose deal with Nottingham Forest expired this summer, has been training with The Hammers at the start to the campaign.
It is said that he has impressed David Moyes and the East London outfit are reportedly keen to offer him a short-term deal.
But it won’t be easy with Football Insider now suggesting that Turkish duo Galatasaray and Fenerbahce are both interested in the 30-year-old.
Any deal can be completed outside of the transfer window as a result of Lingard’s free agent status.
