Fulham 3 Wolves 2: Thriller ends in controversy as hosts are awarded last-gasp penalty after lengthy VAR check

GARY O’NEIL was dealt another blow by his pet hate VAR as Wolves crashed to a dramatic defeat. His team was beaten in injury time by the third penalty of a breathless game which will only add to the frustrations of the Wanderers’ boss.

Fulham winger Willian had earlier buried a debatable spot kick on the hour after Tom Cairney went down under a challenge from defender Nelson Semedo.
The Brazilian then had the last word of a thrilling game by converting from 12 yards again – this time after sub Harry Wilson was brought down by Joao Gomes during seven minutes of stoppage time.
To make it even worse for O’Neil, his team had twice pulled themselves back into the game with two equalisers – having also hit the woodwork in the first half during a spirited away performance.
Matheus Cunha planted a neatly cushioned header into the bottom corner of the net on 22 minutes to cancel out Alex Iwobi’s opener after only seven.
And O’Neil thought his luck had finally changed with refs and VAR when striker Hwang Hee-Chan made it 2-2 with 15 minutes to go with a Wolves penalty.
Fulham midfielder Tim Ream had clattered into the South Korean to give ref Michael Salisbury the easiest decision of the night.
O’Neill has been simmering with referees and VAR this season for what he thinks has been a series of debatable decisions against his team.
He has even held talks with refs’ boss Howard Webb over the matter.

Wolves have previously come off worse against Manchester United, Newcastle and Sheffield United this season alone to leave O’Neil fuming with the authorities.
And it looked to be happening again when Fulham skipper Tom Cairney went down in the box under a challenge from Nelson Semedo.
VAR took five minutes to back up ref Michael Salisbury’s initial decision and Brazilian winger Willian stepped up to bury a shot from 12 yards and put Fulham ahead with just over half an hour to go.
Salisbury was forced to consult the pitchside monitor in added time at the end of the second half when Gomes and Wilson collided knee-to-knee.
It is rough justice on O’Neil who has masterminded an impressive run of games in recent weeks which included wins over defending Premier League champions Manchester City and Tottenham. It is a first win in five Premier League games for Fulham.

MANCHESTER UNITED are have defeated Everton 3-0 in front of loud boos at Goodison Park in the Toffees first game since their points deduction.Alejandro Garnacho opened the scoring for United with a sensational overhead kick before Marcus Rashford doubled the lead from the penalty spot and Anthony Martial made it 3-0.
Sean Dyche’s men have plummeted down to 19th following a ten-point deduction for breaching Financial Fair Play rules.

    Result: Everton 0-3 Man Utd

A little more from Erik ten Hag, on that Marcus Rashford penalty: “You see also how great captain Bruno Fernandes is. He assessed his team-mate needed that goal. He has the confidence in Rashy, who is a good penalty taker. As a team you need that leadership that you back each other.
“We have to go step by step. This is one step.”
    ‘The finish is fantastic’
Not half! Erik ten Hag has been speaking after watching the match from the stands, and you’ll be shocked to hear that he thought Alejandro Garnacho’s goal was pretty good.
He told Sky Sports: “Probably goal of the season. Also the build-up, not just the finish, was very good. The finish is fantastic.
“After the start of the game we were too easy-going. I criticised the team at half-time. They thought they were already there. You can’t do that. You have to do 100 minutes on the pitch. Second half we did very well.
“Our three offensive players scored. That’s what we need. It will help us as a team.”

    ‘Bizarre’
Sean Dyche has been speaking with Sky Sports. He’s encouraged by Everton’s display but isn’t happy about the ‘mayhem’ caused by the VAR protocols.
He said: “A lot of the performance was right. In the first half they had a great finish, it changed the feel of the early part of the game. Then we got a grip on the game. We had chances but couldn’t take them.
“A pretty decent performance from our point of view.”
On the penalty, Dyche added: “It’s bizarre. There’s no point. I feel for fans. We all know what’s going to happen. The VAR thing this year, it’s been all over the place. It’s the simplest thing but it seems to be mayhem all the time.
“You’re 2-0 down all of a sudden from a nothing moment, one you think has gone for you. It’s not just about that but it doesn’t help.
“This season we’ve created a lot of chances and not scored goals. Our mentality will serve us well this season.
“Ten points taken away from anyone will change their season. Until the appeals process goes through we have to play away the noise.”

    More from Bruno
Big captain’s move from Bruno Fernandes to hand Marcus Rashford the penalty today. Fortunately for him it went in!
On giving Rashford the penalty: “Because Marcus needed a bit of confidence, he needed his goal – he is an excellent penalty taker. I was sure he could score that penalty and Marcus did it perfectly.
“I think obviously strikers and wingers need to score goals, it is part of their game. Marcus was unstoppable and he could take on everybody.
“Marcus last season was amazing so expectations have been higher and it is just about getting those goals back.”
    Up next?
As mentioned, this is just the start of a flood of fixtures for Manchester United.
They’ve got five games over the next 16 days, starting with Galatasaray in the Champions League on Wednesday.
After that, they’ve got three Premier League fixtures against Newcastle (a), Chelsea (H) and Bournemouth (H) before their final UCL showdown with Bayern Munich at Old Trafford.
It’s all about the league for Everton, who face Nottingham Forest (a), Newcastle (H), Chelsea (H) and Burnley (a).
The Toffees also have a Carabao Cup quarter-final meeting with Fulham on December 19th.
    Bruno
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes on Alejandro Garnacho’s goal: “Ah, so-so.
“I’ll give him a good note just for the goal. But that’s because he knows I have big expectations for him.
“He’s not a great player yet, but he has a big future ahead. We expect a lot from him. He knows that, even more from me – I’ll always be behind him asking for more. Amazing goal though.”
    Tough crowd…

    “Not a great player yet”
Bruno Fernandes pulling no punches in his post-match interview with Alejandro Garnacho, who scored that belter. The captain is doing his level-best to keep the youngster grounded.
He always revealed that he handed Marcus Rashford the penalty to boost his confidence. Full quotes on the way.
    Remember the name
Whisper it quietly, but Manchester United might just have a serious talent on their hands in 18-year-old Kobbie Mainoo.
The young midfielder oozed class, while looking mature and composed in the middle of the park. Quite a spectacular first Premier League start for the teenager.

    The standings…
So what’s that done to the table?
Well, it’s made it look very good for Manchester United. Despite all the commotion and complaints, Erik ten Hag’s side are perched in sixth position – just six points behind leaders Manchester City.

As for Everton, they are second from bottom on four points – but would obviously be comfortably sat in 14th without their 10-point deduction.
Luton Town’s win over Crystal Palace has made their position look even more precarious. Rob Edwards’ side look like they’ve got the stomach for a fight.

    EVERTON 0-3 MANCHESTER UNITED
FT: And that’s that! Manchester United clinch their fifth Premier League win in their last six matches.
Alejandro Garnacho got things off to a flyer for the visitors, who weathered a first-half siege from Everton before pulling away to secure a very comfortable 3-0 victory.
Huge confidence boost for Erik ten Hag’s side, who face a must-win clash against Galatasaray on Wednesday in the Champions League. All the reaction to come, folks!
    Credit: getty
    EVERTON 0-3 MANCHESTER UNITED
95: Gary Neville has given Alejandro Garnacho the Player of the Match award, despite suggesting Kobbie Mainoo was easily Manchester United’s best player. It’s understandable, you score a goal like that you deserve all the plaudits.
He did add that “we’ve all tried overhead kicks,” but Neville’s attempt must have slipped my memory.
    EVERTON 0-3 MANCHESTER UNITED
93: Sizzler. Substitute Youssef Chermiti drives forward and unleashes a piledriver but it was always heading wide of the post.
Booked! That’s swiftly followed by a ridiculous yellow card for Idrissa Gueye, who went through the back of Hannibal Mejbri for no reason whatsoever.
    EVERTON 0-3 MANCHESTER UNITED
    90: Six minutes added on.
    EVERTON 0-3 MANCHESTER UNITED
89: Could, and probably should be 4-0.
Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes fly forward together on the break like red arrows but Rashford’s cross is intercepted by a sliding James Tarkowski. The Portuguese would have been tapping into an empty net.
    Lewis Dobbin replaces Abdoulaye Doucoure.
    EVERTON 0-3 MANCHESTER UNITED
86: Facundo Pellistri looks to make it four when cutting inside from the right flank but his dipping effort is well held by Jordan Pickford. Think I heard United supporters shouting “England’s Number One,” sarcastically.
    EVERTON 0-3 MANCHESTER UNITED
85: Hannibal Mejbri replaces Anthony Martial for the closing stages. Quite the luxury for Erik ten Hag being able to rest a few of his key players ahead of clashes with Galatasaray and Newcastle next week.
    EVERTON 0-3 MANCHESTER UNITED
83: It’s flat as a pancake inside Goodison Park now. They will remain in 19th position on four points after that 10-point deduction — five away from Luton Town in 17th position.
You have to think that A LOT of hope is resting on their appeal.
    Youssef Chermiti replaces Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
    EVERTON 0-3 MANCHESTER UNITED
80: This will be Manchester United’s first Premier League win by more than one goal this season.
    EVERTON 0-3 MANCHESTER UNITED
79: Woodwork! Vitaliy Mykolenko tries his luck from an acute-ish angle but it ricochets off the crossbar and away to safety. Kind of the story of Everton’s afternoon really — they’ve been wasteful and United have been ruthless.
    EVERTON 0-3 MANCHESTER UNITED
76: Aaron Wan-Bissaka replaces Luke Shaw for the final 15 minutes or so.
Quite the transformation for Manchester United in this second half. It looked for all the world that Everton build on their momentum but they’ve not been able to generate any sustained pressure whatsoever since the break.
EVERTON 0-3 MANCHESTER UNITED – MARTIAL
74: GOAL! Game, set and match.
Bruno Fernandes dispossess Idrissa Gueye in the middle of the park and Manchester United are off. Facundo Pellistri reaches the box before finding Fernandes in the middle. He slips the ball through to Anthony Martial, who dinks it beyond Jordan Pickford. That’s his NINTH goal against the Toffees.
    Credit: GETTY
    EVERTON 0-2 MANCHESTER UNITED
73: Changes. A raft of them actually.
Sofyan Amrabat and Facundo Pellistri replace Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho.
Ashley Young and Dwight McNeil are replaced by Nathan Patterson and Arnaut Danjuma.
    EVERTON 0-2 MANCHESTER UNITED
72: Good block from Diogo Dalot, who gets his body in the way of Abdoulaye Doucoure’s effort. The referee is forced to intervene as Branthwaite and Onana have a little argument inside the six-yard box but Dalot knocks it clear.
Nearly 3-0. Marcus Rashford travels unopposed down the left channel and pings a cross across the face of Jordan Pickford’s goal. The fizzes cross is met by Alejandro Garnacho, who can only fine the side-netting with a flying right peg.
    EVERTON 0-2 MANCHESTER UNITED
69: Most of the noise inside Goodison Park is coming from the away end, as you might expect. Everton and their supporters… well they just seem deflated with little over 20 minutes left on the clock.
Victor Lindelof does well to intercept Ashley Young’s searching cross and the subsequent corner is punched into the air by Onana, who gathers at the second attempt.
    EVERTON 0-2 MANCHESTER UNITED
66: Bit of a waste there. Bruno Fernandes tip-toes his way along the byline and has options for the cut-back but fizzes it straight at Jarrad Branthwaite. Alejandro Garnacho then arrives in the box after a short corner but fires wide. More

    ‘They feel harshly treated’
Gary Neville hasn’t minced his words in the commentary box. The Sky Sports pundit gave his opinion earlier today, and he’s clearly unimpressed with the harshness of Everton’s punishment.
He said: “I can see why Everton fans are extremely annoyed.
“Did that offence warrant the largest sporting sanction that the Premier League have ever handed out? Compared to some of the offences we’ve seen, where the top clubs have been scooting behind each other’s backs, trying to work out a way to destroy the ethos of English and European football.
“From my point of view, they feel harshly treated after the six clubs that tried to walk away with the crown jewels got fined £3.5m, we accept it’s a different offence. I can see why they’re annoyed. Is it a start of a new wave of authority from the Premier League?”
    Interesting
Should be interesting to see James Garner up against Kobbie Mainoo in the middle of the park today. Both products of United’s youth system of course.
Garner, 22, has played every minute of the 14 games he has started for Everton this season and is quietly going about his business, earning plaudits for his displays.
You would seriously have to think he would be a starter at Old Trafford these days.
Anyway, asked about his relationship with Ten Hag, Garner revealed: “Erik ten Hag is a very approachable man, but very strict.
“He doesn’t allow anyone to break the rules. He tells it like it is and punishes people who have done wrong.
“I simply asked him if I was going to be part of the group or if he saw me playing a role. I felt that the conversation had not gone as well as I wanted and I made the decision to leave.”

    Baptism of fire
What a test for young Kobbie Mainoo!
The 18-year-old makes his first Premier League start for Manchester United in what’s likely to be a bear pit at Goodison Park today. Supporters have high hopes for the teenager.
Great for him, not exactly a ringing endorsement for Sofyan Amrabat.

Should do the trick. Call off the lawyers.
    ‘We were all shocked’
Sean Dyche has written a message for Evertonians in today’s match programme.
He reiterates that ‘we were all shocked’ by the 10-point deduction and intend to appeal the decision.
He added: “Our form is encouraging and the feelings of our recent performances have been good, backed incredibly by your support both home and away. We are locking in a strong mentality and the challenge for us now is to continue building the positive momentum.
“The goal for us doesn’t change. We have to win football matches.
“I said when I became manager that we have to learn to win and do so in different ways. Our 3-2 victory at Crystal Palace last time out was a brilliant example of that. I know we can play better than we did at Selhurst Park.
“We can deal with the ball better, particularly looking at the second half, but the resilience and teamsmanship is growing all the time. I know, as always, you will be with us all the way.”
    Credit: GETTY
    Update
Aston Villa are leading Tottenham 2-1 thanks to Ollie Watkins’ second-half strike.
If it remains that way, Unai Emery’s side will move into fourth position – two points behind leaders Manchester City. Just over 20 minutes remaining in that one.
    Team news
Everton make one change from their dramatic late win at Selhurst Park before the international break.
Midfielder Amadou Onana has a calf strain isn’t fit enough to feature in the squad, but Seamus Coleman returns to the bench for the first time this season.
Manchester United welcome back Luke Shaw following a long spell out through injury.
He’s one of three changes that also sees teenage midfielder Kobbie Mainoo make his first Premier League start, and Anthony Martial comes in for Rasmus Hojlund, who has failed to recover from a hamstring injury.
    Credit: getty
    Starting XI
Everton XI: Pickford, Young, Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Mykolenko, Garner, Doucoure, Gueye, Harrison, Calvert-Lewin, McNeil
Subs: Virginia, Patterson, Keane, Godfrey, Coleman, Hunt, Danjuma, Dobbin, Chermiti
Manchester United XI: Onana, Dalot, Maguire, Lindelof, Shaw, McTominay, Mainoo, Garnacho, Fernandes, Rashford, Martial
Subs: Bayindir, Wan-Bissaka, Varane, Reguilon, Van de Beek, Amrabat, Hugill, Mejbri, Pellestri
    Suspended
I guess this is team news, of sorts.
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag will not be on the touchline this afternoon after accumulating three yellow cards this season.
And he’s taken the opportunity to sport a snazzy grey flat cap and turtleneck combo. Should blend in nicely at Goodison…
The Dutchman will be watching from the stands, meaning his assistant Mitchel van der Gaag will lead the side. Oh, and Steve McClaren will also be knocking about.
    Credit: getty
    Team news
The starting XI’s will be arriving shortly, folks.
What do we reckon then? A return for Luke Shaw? Everton unchanged from their 3-2 win over Crystal Palace? We’ll find out very soon indeed.
    Protest
As mentioned, Everton supporters will be protesting the Premier League’s 10-point deduction this afternoon.
50,000 pink cards have been printed showing the Premier League logo alongside the caption: ‘corrupt’. Most of those will be handed to supporters outside the stadium.
Cards will be held up before the clash during the Premier League anthem, and again in the 10th minute. There’s also enormous banners being draped around the ground and inside.
Everton fans also paid for a plane to fly over the Etihad Stadium yesterday with the banner ‘Premier League = corrupt’. Not shown on Sky Sports, however…

    Credit: getty

    Elsewhere
Not sure if you’ve been following, but this Tottenham vs Aston Villa match is absolutely bonkers.
About 16 sitters missed in the opening 28 seconds (slight exaggeration), another injury for Rodrigo Bentancur and three Villa bookings… but it’s 1-1 at the break.
I suspect we’ll see a few more goals before the full-time whistle. I’ll keep you posted.
    Welcome
    Well here we are.
It’s been just over a week since Everton were hit with the biggest sanction in Premier League history.
And the sense of injustice is burning just as bright as when the decision was announced. Trust me.
The Toffees have raised more than £33,000 to go towards protests over their 10-point deduction handed down by the Premier League.
And those objections will be visible for all to see this afternoon.
Everton supporters have promised a hostile atmosphere at Goodison Park, so it’s not exactly an ideal time for Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United to visit.

Lap 37/58 – Verstappen leads, Perez second
Russell is told to box after Norris heads in.
The Mercedes driver questions if they can do a one-stop race but his team are not having any of it.
Verstappen now leads Leclerc by 9 seconds, with his teammate Perez now in third place.
Leclerc then heads into the pits allowing Red Bull a one/two in the race.
Lap 35/58 – Verstappen leads, Leclerc second
As it stands, Mercedes are five points ahead of Ferrari.
Sainz is currently sitting in twelfth position which is not what Ferrari are hoping for.
Leclerc is keeping up his end of the bargain, his teammate needs to up his game.
Norris heads in for his second pit stop as he is struggling on his current tyres, a much better pit stop this time of 2.3 seconds.
Lap 33/58 – Verstappen leads, Leclerc second
The tactics of the teams are now becoming evident as Tsunoda is planning a one-stop race.
Alpha Tauri need him to get at least a sixth place for their constructor aims on where they want to finish.
Lance Stroll has clocked the fastest lap time of the race so far.
Lap 31/58 – Verstappen leads, Leclerc second
Leclerc has now had two track limits warnings, he will not be wanting to rack up a third for sure.
Verstappen leads the Ferrari by 6.3 seconds, this man is just a machine.

Lap 29/58 – Verstappen leads, Leclerc second
Russell will be focussed on trying to get a podium finish today.
It is crazy to think that the Mercedes driver only has one podium finish in the entire season.
Norris and Piastri are just behind him in fourth and fifth.
Lap 27/58 – Verstappen leads, Leclerc second
Ferrari really need a good race from both of their drivers today.
As Sainz heads out of the pits in sixteenth place, Mercedes now has a four point lead in the constructor’s championship.
Hamilton does however have some damage to a wing, whether that gets worse and will need replacing remains to be seen.
Currently, he is in eighth position with Russell in third.
Lap 25/58 – Verstappen leads, Leclerc second
Normal service has been resumed as Tsunoda heads into the pits.
Russell is in third place, just ahead of Norris in fourth.
Sainz is putting some real pressure on the McLaren, only 0.7 seconds behind him.
The Ferrari heads into the pits for his second set of hard tyres. More

    Gazza’s ostrich story with Venables
Paul Gascoigne was once able to get out of a telling-off from Terry Venables thanks to an Ostrich in a Tottenham shirt.
Paul Stewart recalled the story after Steve Sedgley, nicknamed “long neck”, joined the club.
In an extract with The Chronicle, he said: “One day, whilst Venners was taking training, all the players were on the pitch in a circle around the halfway line. Gazza was late.
As always, the boss was asking me where he was, like I was his minder. Just as I was about to make an excuse, Gazza turned up with someone alongside him, carrying a brown sack. The sack was moving as if something was in it.
“And just as Venners was about to rollick Gazza for being late, the bag opened and an ostrich ran out wearing a Spurs shirt. There was a number seven and Sedgley written on the back. The lads just fell about laughing.
“Everyone, the kids, the training staff, the apprentices, stood open-mouthed or in hysterics. Venables’ face was a picture. The bird went running off in a panic and he had some job getting it back.
“I am not too sure what the animal rights people would say if they knew that Gazza had a bird from the local zoo dressed in a Spurs shirt loose on the training ground. He claimed that he had ‘borrowed’ it from Broxbourne Zoo. We were never able to verify if that was the case.”
