      First Brighton boxing win in 32 years
      Harlem Eubank gave Brighton its first home boxing win in 32 years last night as he beat Timo Schwarzkopf.
      It was their first since Chris Eubank’s heyday in the ’90s.
      And nephew Harlem had his uncle Chris in his corner as they proudly gave the home crowd something to cheer about on the night.
      Harlem took home the victory after flooring Schwarzkopf in the 11th.

      It was a big night for both fighting families last night as Harlem Eubank and Roman Fury picked up big knockout wins.
      Harlem beat Timo Schwarzkopf in the 11th round while Fury overcame his opponent in the third.
      Chris Eubank Sr was there live to cheer on and support Harlem.
      And Roman’s dad John and brother Tommy were down in Brighton to aid their man.

      The Hove audience was hushed in round eight when it looked like their hero was hurt and struggling. But he sparked back into life and action and left Schwarzkopf buzzed just before the bell.
      The championship rounds seemed to be slipping away sleepily into the Sussex night.
      But at 11:05pm Eubank landed a peach of right hook and robbed Schwarzkopf of his senses and balance.
      The brave visitor bounced back up off the canvas but the action was expertly waved off before he was hurt further.

      The iconic seaside town and long-time home of the Eubank fighting family had been starved of big-time boxing since British ring legend Chris Sr’s 1991 win over Dan Sherry at the Brighton Centre.
      But his nephew returned to the same spot to outpoint dogged German visitor Timo Schwarzkopf and pay his father and former fighter Simon – who sadly died in September – a touching tribute.

      Harlem nearly made it in a different sport
      Harlem was a Seagulls academy prospect and a karate world champion, who avoided boxing for the first 18 years of his life because of the burden that comes with following in famous footsteps.
      But now the deep-thinking fighter – who sadly lost father Simon in September after a devastating battle with dementia – concedes it was probably a pre-written path for him.
      He explained: “Sometimes, when you look back on life, it seems what you are meant to do is already laid out for you.
      “My whole family boxed, dad, uncles, cousins. It must just be something that runs deep in our blood.
      “I stopped wrestling with the idea of wanting to do this and accepted the idea that I am meant to do this.”

      On the famous pier, Harlem told SunSport before tonight’s fight: “I wasn’t around when my uncle boxed there, my first memory of the Centre was seeing the Harlem Globetrotters there and later the Brighton Bears, lots of basketball.
      “This is a great chance to see all my people there; family, friends, fellow Brightonians.
      “I have been fighting on the road for a long time now, Newcastle, Edinburgh, London and now I have this chance to fight in the city where I grew up, that shaped me, helped to give me art, culture and creativity.
      “It’s really special for me to do this because, while the football club is doing incredibly well and shining a light for the city, there isn’t much other mainstream sporting attention on us. So I aim to do everyone proud.
      “I have told my uncle before how inspired I have been by what he has done and I am sure I will tell him again just before my fight.”

      Harlem Eubank will be the latest family Globetrotter to bring big-time boxing home to the Brighton Centre in mere minutes.
      The 29-year-old super-lightweight is headlining a show in the iconic seaside city for the first time in 32 years – since uncle Chris Sr in the very same spot.
      The little cousin to Chris Jr wasn’t even alive to watch Sr’s 1991 first defence of the middleweight world title he had won from bitter nemesis Nigel Benn three months earlier.
      But the venue has become a spiritual hub for the family and they return to take over the 5,000-seater for the Channel 5 clash with Timo Schwarzkopf.

      If you put Lerrone Richards in a 6-18-18-28 round fight, I think the outcome would always be the same.
      A unanimous decision win, barely a mark on him, a one-sided triumph.
      That shouldn’t be boring, but it really, really is.
      Even Mickey Ellison looks disinterested and he’s getting punched in the head every 10 seconds.

      BRIGHTON played out their wildest dreams in the city of sin – taking a huge stride towards knockout European football on one of the club’s greatest nights.Ansu Fati and Simon Adingra scored either side of half-time to seal back-to-back wins over Euro greats Ajax – something no Seagulls fan could have dreamt up just a year ago, regardless of what they had been smoking.

      Brighton had started to find their feet in Europe after three games, triumphing over the Dutch giants at The Amex last time out.
      The four time European Cup winners have improved since, with a new manager and two wins in the Eredivisie lifting them away from the bottom of the table.
      But other than a little more possession and a couple of pot shots from range, there was no huge sign of improvement in the opening stages.
      De Zerbi’s side suffered slow starts against AEK Athens and especially in Marseille. But here in their second ever overseas trip in the competition, the Seagulls got off to a flier thanks to some quick thinking by Adingra.
      Adingra, who is getting plenty of chances following Solly March’s injury, pounced on a loose ball from Silvano Vos before quickly playing in Barcelona loanee Fati.
      The nimble Spaniard raced in behind the red and white back line before finding the bottom left with a cute finish.
      With back-to-back goals in Europe for the Seagulls, Fati is starting to sparkle and took to one of Europe’s most storied stages with ease.
      There were tricks and flicks on the halfway line before he returned the favour for Adingra.

      Fati drove forward from the centre circle, gifted space by the retreating Ajax defence, and slipped in the Ivorian winger to his right.
      Adingra set himself with a touch and lifted a fine finish into the far corner for his first goal in European football.
      Fati departed with a goal and an assist from an hour’s work as Brighton began rotating and resting, just to make this evening all the more surreal for their travelling fans.
      Ajax are the only side to face the Seagulls this season and not score, though Brian Brobbey came closest in an improved second half – almost finding a way back when his strike hit the inside of the post but rolled across the line before being put behind.
      Bart Verbruggen had to be sharp to stop from Chuba Akpom and protect a rare clean sheet.
      Brighton’s brilliant night was not without concern.

      Pervis Estupinan returned from injury as a second half sub only to have to be hooked again shortly after.
      Both James Milner and captain Lewis Dunk were also lost in the first half.
      Dunk, who was named in the England squad on Thursday, suffered a groin injury after Milner had hobbled off after just eight minutes.
      With the Seagulls struggling to cope with the extra burden of Europa League football back home, they are five without a win in the Premier League, more walking wounded is the last thing they need.
      But that was a problem for the morning, the Brighton fans in Amsterdam had some serious celebrating to do – this was a night to toast and the perfect city to do it in.

      West Ham 1 Olympiacos 0: Paqueta strikes to guarantee Hammers European football in the New Year

      UPON their arrival in East London, the travelling Olympiacos fans were given the starkest of warnings to behave themselves.In a club statement before kick-off, the Greeks produced an astonishing list of banned items deemed inappropriate for the London Stadium, including ammunition, pets and machetes.

      Thankfully, that list did not contain West Ham’s Brazilian maestro Lucas Paqueta, who lit up this otherwise dull affair with a beautiful 73rd minute match-deciding volley.
      It was initially given as offside, but VAR came to the rescue to show Paqueta was kept on from James Ward-Prowse’s clever dink thanks to Francisco Ortega’s lazy positioning.
      Having lost their record-breaking 17-match unbeaten run in Europe with defeat out in Athens last month, this crucial result ensures the Hammers are in pole position to top their Europa League group with two games remaining. Victory away at Serbia’s Backa Topola after the international break could clinch it.
      Moyes left his skipper Kurt Zouma at home, the French defender still nursing a troublesome knee injury with Sunday’s clash against Nottingham Forest in mind. Konstantinos Mavropanos was drafted in again to face his compatriots.
      Jarrod Bowen led the line, and not for the first time this campaign, with Michail Antonio left on the bench, a sign perhaps that the Jamaican is falling out of favour.
      You can hardly blame Moyes, who right now is enjoying watching a free-flowing and exciting attacking trio of Bowen, Paqueta and Mohamed Kudus strut their stuff.
      That threesome helped create the first big chance as the hosts began with plenty of zip and aggression. Said Benrahma’s curling effort was tipped wide by Alexandros Paschalakis.
      From the resulting Ward-Prowse corner, the Olympiacos keeper was forced into another save as Nayef Aguerd connected with a header six yards out.

      But frustration crept in. West Ham have proven already this season they struggle to create when they have more of the ball, and so it was playing out that way.

      The only consolation for Moyes’ Irons was that Olympiacos looked pretty toothless on the counter. Wolves loanee Daniel Podence shanked their best opening just inside the box.

      It may only have been the Europa League but do not tell that to anyone inside this stadium who could not believe what they were seeing.
      Unbelievably, Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah thought he had scored a 97th-minute equaliser after Diogo Jota made it 3-2 in the 89th minute.
      While there was mayhem on the touch with players arguing with each other, Bulgarian ref Georgi Kabakov – having pointed to the centre circle for a goal – was called over to the screen after VAR spotted that the ball bounced up off Alexis Mac Allister’s chest and on to his sleeve.
      After a long check, Kabakov ruled the goal out so Liverpool were denied a remarkable recovery.
      Thousands of Liverpool fans have booked their accommodation for the Europa League final in Dublin next May and there is no room for panic. Certainly not yet.
      But here was a reminder that even though Jurgen Klopp’s men will surely still qualify for the knockout stages, the route to Ireland on May 22 will not necessarily be that straightforward – even against teams as seemingly poor as Toulouse.
      Yet with just two wins in their previous 13 games, the Ligue 1 strugglers were deserved winners over Jurgen Klopp’s mix-and-match team in what was another bonkers game in this crazy week of football.
      A first-half strike from Norwegian winger Aron Donnum and a cracking second-half goal from Thijs Dallinga put Toulouse in control.

      After the relief and revelry of Saturday’s win at Fulham, it was back down to earth with a bump for Manchester United as they crashed to a 4-3 defeat at Copenhagen in the Champions League.

      Debate continues to rage post-match regarding the decision to send Marcus Rashford off in the 42nd-minute of Manchester United’s 4-3 defeat at FC Copenhagen.
      Back in the team after missing Saturday’s win at Fulham with a knock, the forward was dismissed for a lunge on Elias Jelert after referee Donatas Rumsas was sent to the pitchside monitor.
      It was only Rashford’s second red card in 374 Manchester United appearances, and his first since September 2018 when sent off against Burnley.

      Erik ten Hag revealed he was very pleased with his players’ performance, but was left frustrated by what he considered to be a number of contentious refereeing decisions that went against his side.
      The Manchester United manager was particularly aggrieved by Copenhagen’s first goal – 93 seconds after Marcus Rashford’s sending off – which he felt was offside, while he also takes issue with the handball that decision that led to their penalty.
      The Dutchman also believed the game swung on the red card, a judgement that he labelled ‘very harsh’.
      I think we were very good until the red card, but the red card changes everything. It becomes a different game, but then you concede two goals that never should count and that’s very disappointing. The first goal was offside, there is a player standing in front of Andre Onana, and the second, what can you even do about that? And I think the red card was a very harsh decision, [Rashford] was going for the ball. We are dealing with many decisions against us but that’s how it is.       Rasmus shines bright on dark night
      Manchester United may have endured another defeat, but the performance of Rasmus Hojlund will at least offer hope for the future.
      At the tender age of 20 years and 277 days, the Danish striker became the youngest player to score twice in a Champions League away match for the Old Trafford club.
      Hojlund is now United’s top scorer in all competitions this season with five goals – all five of which have come in this competition.

      Saturday’s win at Fulham proved to be a false dawn as Manchester United slipped to defeat once again.
