    That’s all from North London
How do you sum up a game like that? The truth is you can’t, but it doesn’t matter as it’s sure to be a match that is replayed, replayed and replayed for years to come.
And the good news about a neatly-edited highlights package is that it won’t involve a breathless blogger desperately trying to keep pace with every box-office incident taking place on the pitch.
In fact, the only person stretched to their limits more than us minute-by-minuters this evening was surely VAR official John Brooks, who had to make nine calls on this crazy night in the capital.
The history books will show a Chelsea 4-1 win, but it will need a novel the size of War and Peace to fully do justice to everything that occurred at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
We did our best though, and we appreciate you joining us for the ride.
    Goodnight.
    Quick hits on crazy night
Before we sign off for the night, here are a few more statistics following this evening’s classic encounter, courtesy of the nerds at Opta.

Chelsea secured their 15th Premier League away win over Tottenham, with no side enjoying more wins on the road at Spurs than the Blues (15 level with Man Utd).
Cole Palmer is the first Chelsea player to score his first three goals in the Premier League all from the penalty spot and just the eighth player from any side to do so.
Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson netted three goals in this game, one more than he managed in his previous nine appearances in the Premier League. It was also his first-ever hat-trick in the big five European leagues (45th game).
Tottenham saw two of their players sent off in a home Premier League game for the first time ever and for just the fourth time in the competition at any venue (August 2001 v Everton, October 2008 v Stoke and May 2019 v Bournemouth).
Tottenham winger Dejan Kulusevski (10) is just the seventh Swedish player to hit double figures for goals in the Premier League (Ljungberg 48, Larsson 26, Elmander 19, Ibrahimovic 17, Isak 16, Alexandersson 12).

Postecoglou: we will always have a go
Ange Postecoglou has praised his players for their efforts in defeat, and defended his decision to maintain a high line and press despite being down to nine men.
In the aftermath of Tottenham’s 4-1 defeat to Chelsea, the Spurs boss has come underfire for his approach, labelled naive by some online killjoys. Not that the Australian cares one jot.
I am very proud of the players. Right to the end they were trying to create something for us. They couldn’t give any more than they did. A huge part of this game is will, effort and determination, and they showed that. It is who we are and who we will be for as long as I am here. Even if we go down to five men, we will still have a go…Ange PostecoglouSky Sports

    Poch enjoys return to Spurs
It may have taken a while, and a whole heap of drama, but Mauricio Pochettino managed to mark his return to Tottenham with a win.
In doing so, the Argentine has become the fourth manager to beat Spurs in the Premier League, having previously taken charge of them.
He joins an illustrious list that includes Chris Hughton, Martin Jol and…erm… Tim Sherwood.
Only Southampton, Chelsea (both 7) and Newcastle (6) have had more former managers beat them in the Premier League.

    Romero sees red (once again)
There’s no doubting that Cristian Romero is an excellent defender, but his lack of discipline evident time and time again proves he is also one of the daftest.
Since his debut season of 2021-22, the Argentine has received more red cards (4) in all competitions than any other player in the Premier League.
Meanwhile, only Craig Dawson, Lewis Dunk and Wilfred Ndidi have conceded more penalties (all 5) than the Tottenham centre-back in that period.

Ange’s unbeaten run comes to an end
The upshot of a crazy evening is that Tottenham have become the last side to lose in the Premier League this season.
It is their first defeat in 12 league games since losing another London derby – 3-1 at Brentford in May – and the first since Ange Postecoglou took charge.
And for Postecoglou, it marked a first home defeat in British football at the 43rd attempt, following an unbeaten spell in front of his own fans while at Celtic.

When you devalue a thrilling night of football with some numbers.

Full time – Tottenham 1-4 Chelsea
Beaten 4-1, Tottenham’s players – those that made it to the end – depart to a standing ovation from the home fans.
It’s been that kind of night and a game that will inevitably go down as a Premier League classic.
Five goals, five disallowed, a hat-trick, a penalty, two red cards, nine yellow cards and a shedload of VAR talking points.
And even then, it doesn’t even tell half the story.

    Tottenham 1-4 Chelsea
90+7. It may be one of the more bizarre hat-tricks in Premier League history, but the much-maligned Nicolas Jackson will be walking off with the matchball this evening.
It will surely act as a huge confidence boost for the striker, who even looks short on belief as he races through for his third goal.
Pondering whether to square to Mykhailo Mudryk, Jackson stumbles and then recovers to beat Guglielmo Vicario and roll into the empty net.
Will this bizarre, barmy, surreal night be the making of the Senegalese forward in the Premier League?

    Hat-trick!

    Tottenham 1-3 Chelsea
90+5. In a weird way, I think we may have learnt more about Tottenham this evening than Chelsea.
Either way, Mauricio Pochettino, his players and supporters will take heart from a London derby success, regardless of the events that led to it.
    Tottenham 1-3 Chelsea
90+4. Two goals for Nicolas Jackson and three points for Chelsea!
It’s almost a carbon copy of their second too, this time with Conor Gallagher exposing Tottenham’s high line by bursting down the left.
The England midfielder has all the time in the world to pick out Nicolas Jackson in the middle, who buries first time beyond Guglielmo Vicario.
The nine men of Tottenham have given this a real go, but have finally been undone by some sensible Chelsea play.

    Game over!

    Tottenham 1-2 Chelsea
90+2. Moments after nearly wriggling free in the box, Son almost brings the house down with a wonderful solo run and shot.
Sanchez gets down low to push the ball away, and another chance – perhaps Spurs’ last one – passes.
    Tottenham 1-2 Chelsea
    90. There will be nine minutes of stoppage time to be played, and – this will sound insane – Chelsea are hanging on somewhat.
Tottenham 1-2 Chelsea – Mudryk yellow card
    88. Now another Chelsea substitute goes into the book.
This time it’s Muydrk, who leaves a foot in on Vicario as the keeper sweeps up for the umpteenth time this evening.
    Tottenham 1-2 Chelsea
    86. So close! So, so close!!
Another wicked free-kick from the left has Chelsea all of a panic, and Bentancur almost punishes them at the far post.
The Uruguayan almost appeared in two minds as to whether to go with his head or his foot, and that split second delay may have cost him.
Stooping low, the midfielder bundles wide of the post with the goal gaping.

Tottenham 1-2 Chelsea – Gusto yellow card
    85. Like a vulnerable person being scammed by a fraudster, Malo Gusto has just been tricked into committing the dopiest of fouls on the far touchline when there was absolutely no need.
It’s a booking for the substitute, on ten minutes ago for Reece James, and Spurs have another set-piece in a dangerous position.
    Tottenham 1-2 Chelsea
    83. Tottenham are committing more men forward.
Perhaps more men that they actually have left on the field.
    Tottenham 1-2 Chelsea
    81. It’s another long, long VAR check.
“It’s either going to be the fourth goal of the night, or the fifth to be disallowed,” ponders commentator Peter Drury, as befuddled as the rest of us.
Finally, the signal comes in that it’s the latter, and Chelsea breathe another huge sigh of relief.
    Tottenham 1-2 Chelsea
    79. Wow!!
Eric Dier volleys in a rocket and the nine men are level!!
But hold that thought because the offside flag is up once again.
The Tottenham centre-back drifted in around the back as a set-piece was launched towards the penalty area from the left, and then connected with a brilliant first-time effort across Robert Sanchez and into the net.
Onside in the first instance, Dier may have just been off as the delivery was flicked on, but – once again – it is very right.
    Over to you, John Brooks.

    Tottenham 1-2 Chelsea
    77. Now, what can the nine men of Tottenham do?
Nothing, surely, but then this is Ange’s Tottenham.
    Tottenham 1-2 Chelsea
    75. At last!
Chelsea finally have their noses in front, and their fears of further embarrassment are over.
In the end, it’s such a simple, well-worked goal with exactly the kind of move that they should have been deploying since Tottenham had their first player sent off.
Raheem Sterling is sent down the right after holding his run on halfway, and then follows up by holding his nerve to square for Nicolas Jackson to find the empty net.

    Finally!

    Tottenham 1-1 Chelsea
    72. Mauricio Pochettino is cutting a very frustrated figure on the touchline. More

Looking to continue to drive to the Max
Despite having already confirmed another world championship victory, Max Verstappen is aiming  to win as many races as possible until the end of the season.
Having beaten his own record for the amount of wins in a season, he is now looking to set levels that will take some beating in future years.
Starting in pole position today, it would be difficult to see anyone able to contest with the Dutch driver in Brazil.
Welcome to the Brazilian Grand Prix
Max Verstappen took pole position in a weather affected qualifying session. While it stayed dry for all the drivers’ first laps, they found it conditions difficult for many reasons.
Firstly, as jet black clouds were on the horizon, poor light was an issue for the drivers.
Some even reported the wind shifting into a completely different direction halfway through the qualifying session.
Once the rain started, times were drastically reduced and the tailwind created by the adverse weather made it difficult for all drivers.
Charles Leclerc continued his good recent form as he managed to get second place on the grid.
Aston Martin had a pleasing session as Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso finished third and fourth respectively.
Lewis Hamilton finished fifth while his Mercedes’ partner, George Russell, finished eighth.
Russell had finished sixth but was given a two place penalty for impeding Pierre Gasly while leaving the pits.
This resulted in Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz being promoted to sixth and seventh on the grid.
Red Bull’s Sergio Perez finished ninth in qualifying but had a series of incidents with other drivers that really affected his laps.
One in particular was when he was behind Piastri when the Australian spun out. More

Ball proved to have been in play
While debate continues as to whether Newcastle’s goal should have been allowed, technology has confirmed the ball was still in play.
Mikel Arteta said “It’s embarrassing. It’s a disgrace. That’s how I feel. That’s how everyone feels in that room. It is not acceptable, there is too much at stake.”
Despite the Spaniards thoughts, technology seems to confirm that it was a good decision by the VAR studio.

Arteta’s side miss chance to top rivals
Arsenal missed the chance to leapfrog Tottenham in the league this evening, with Postecoglou’s side playing Chelsea on Monday.
They remain three points behind Man City at the top, two points behind Tottenham in second.
Newcastle meanwhile move to sixth place in the table, seven points behind the current league leaders.
Gordon the big engine downs Gunners
Anthony Gordon took some time to settle in at St James’ Park.
It left some fans questioning the large transfer fee they paid for the ex-Everton winger.
This season he has become an integral part of the team, scoring some vital goals in the process.
His goal won the game today and he was also awarded the ‘man of the match’ award for his performance.
Gordon showed he has a real engine to put in a shift for the full 90 minutes and prove an important cog in this Newcastle machine.

Magpies perfect start to tricky month
Eddie Howe’s side face some tough challenges over the next five games.
With trips to Germany and France, they also host Chelsea and Man Utd.
This result today will give them confidence to know they can go into these games and look to get results.

From the wing to the heart of the team
Prior to the arrival of Eddie Howe, Joelinton was plying his trade out on the wing for The Magpies.
Since being converted to centre midfield, he has been pivotal in this Newcastle team.
It was evident today with the amount of ground he covered for his side, playing a huge part in their victory.

    FT: Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal
Eddie Howe will be overjoyed with this victory.
It may not have been a pretty game but the result is massive.
Newcastle are now unbeaten in seven games in the Premier League.
    FT: Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal
The players celebrate this huge victory with their fans.
It’s a great way to prepare for their trip to Dortmund.
Inflicting Arsenal’s first defeat of the campaign.

    FT: Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal
It is all over at St James’ Park.
Arsenal’s unbeaten record in the Premier League is no more.
The roof almost comes off the stadium as the full time whistle is blown.
    Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal
90+8. Trossard looks to shoot from just outside of the box but it is deflected wide for a corner.
The substitute comes to take the corner but for a third time cannot beat the man at the near post.
Arsenal’s set piece delivery has been dreadful today.

    Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal
90+6. Zinchenko gets to the byline and looks to cut it back into the danger area.
Yet again the Newcastle defence are first to the ball and clear.
Trippier is penalised for a foul out wide, gifting Arsenal the chance to put a ball into the box.
    Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal
90+4. Trossard takes the corner for the visitors.
Newcastle are first to the ball at the expense of another corner.
The Magpies look to counter but Willock is a lone figure up top.
    Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal
90+2. Newcastle are giving it their all in the challenge.
Viera tries to take a quick throw in but astonishingly takes a foul throw.
    What a schoolboy error.

    Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal

    90. Despite all their possession in the final third, Arsenal really haven’t worked Nick Pope enough this evening.
It has been an evenly matched game which could have gone either way.
It will be a huge win for Newcastle if they can hold onto these points.
We are going to have eight additional minutes added.
    Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal
    88. The things you can rely on in life……death, taxes and Mikel Arteta moaning about decisions after the game.
You can be sure that will be the case after this one.
Meanwhile. Guimaraes is shown a yellow card for pushing a player in the face and will miss their next game.
    Credit: PA
    Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal
    86. Stockley Park are reporting the goal was given as there was no camera angle available to see if the ball was out of play or if Gordon was offside when Joelinton touched it.
Britain has the most CCTV cameras in Europe but fortunately for Newcastle none of them are used by the VAR studio it seems.
Arsenal are still trying to find a way through but Newcastle are just getting bodies in the way all of the time.
    Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal
    84. This will be a stern test of this Arsenal side now.
They managed to find a way back into the game against Chelsea despite being two-nil down at one stage.
Mikel Arteta’s side need to find at least a goal or lose their unbeaten record in the league this season.
    Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal
    82. The Magpies seem content to sit back now.
Havertz whips a cross in but it is headed clear again.
Arsenal do not really have anyone to attack crosses in the box when they are in the air.
    Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal
    80. The ball breaks to Havertz on the left side of the box.
He looks to drill a cross along the six yard box.
Newcastle defend it brilliantly, at the expense of a corner.
    Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal
    78. Murphy is looking distraught.
Having just come back from a shoulder injury, he is having to leave the pitch with the same problem.
Nketiah and Jorginho come off for Trossard and Viera.

    Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal
    76. The Gunners loft a hopeful ball into the box.
Trippier ducks underneath it to let it go out for a goal kick.
Trossard is ready to come on for Arsenal.
    Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal
    74. Saka is awarded a foul as Trippier challenges him.
Livramento does well to hold up Martinelli.
Arsenal are desperately trying to create something.
    Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal
    72. Martinelli swings in a corner and it is flicked behind for another corner.
Arteta looks like he is preparing Zinchenko to come on.
Saka swings in another corner but cannot beat the defenders at the near post.
White is the player coming off for Zinchenko.
    Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal
    70. The pressure is on the visitors now.
With twenty minutes of the game remaining, they need to find a goal from somewhere.
Newcastle could look to pick them off on the counter attack.
    Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal
    68. Finally, the goal is given.
Going back to Arsenal players diving to try and get fouls, Gabriel has done that right there and cost his side a goal.
Maybe Arteta might think again about getting his side to ‘man up’ a bit more from now on.
    Credit: Reuters
    Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal
    66. They are now checking three things before allowing it.
Whether the ball was out, whether the defender was fouled and now if there was an offside.
If this isn’t given, Newcastle have a right to feel hard done by. More

    Howe to derail the Gunners
Newcastle managed to beat Arsenal in this fixture last season, getting at their opponents and pressing high up the pitch.
It will be a full house, as ever, and if they can get the fans off their seats early on it will be a cauldron of noise for The Gunners to deal with.
They will take some confidence in how West Ham managed to breach the Arsenal defence so much in the week, as did Chelsea in the Premier League recently.
    Spaniard unhappy with fringe chances
Mikel Arteta gave some of his fringe players the chance to impress in the cup this week but they let him down as his side were beaten 3-1 by West Ham.
As a result, the manager is likely to go back to his usual starting line-up today.
Still without the services of Gabriel Jesus, the chance presents itself for Eddie Nketiah to continue to impress up front.
Magpies looking to build on Carabao victory
Having won at Old Trafford in emphatic style, Eddie Howe will be keen for his side to dent the hopes of Arsenal’s title challenge.
St James’ Park is always a tough place to travel, only Liverpool seem to have the knack of coming away with all three points here.
Having lost many of their opening games, victory over Mikel Arteta’s side would make a big statement on their season ahead.
    Welcome to Newcastle vs Arsenal
Eddie Howe’s side welcome Arsenal to St James’ Park as they look to end The Gunners’ unbeaten start to the Premier League season.
Matt Targett suffered an injury in the Carabao Cup midweek and will not be available as he joins Javier Manquillo, Lewis Miley, Alexander Isak, Sven Botman, Elliot Anderson, Jacob Murphy and Harvey Barnes in the rather crowded Magpies’ treatment room.
Added to that, they are without the services of Sandro Tonali until next season now.
From the side that played at Old Trafford, Bruno Guimaraes, Nick Pope, Kieran Trippier, Miguel Almiron and Callum Wilson are all expected to return to the starting line-up.
Mikel Arteta lost Emile Smith-Rowe in their midweek adventures as the unlucky 23-year-old will spend a few weeks out due to a knee problem.
Thomas Partey and Gabriel Jesus are expected to spend a number of weeks out injured also, while Jurrien Timber is on the long road back from his ACL injury.
Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, Declan Rice and William Saliba are all expected to return to the starting XI.
Despite playing against West Ham in midweek, Aaron Ramsdale is expected to may way to David Raya as The Gunners return to league action. More

    That’s all from London
