Barcelona could release Robert Lewandowski on FREE TRANSFER as bizarre contract clause is revealed

BARCELONA could reportedly release Robert Lewandowski as a free agent thanks to a bizarre clause in his contract. The Polish striker, 35, controversially joined the LaLiga giants from Bayern Munich for £42.5million in 2022, signing a four-year deal.

And he continued his remarkable goalscoring with 33 goals in 46 games in his debut season at the Nou Camp – plus a further eight in 16 so far this term.
However, Sport claim Barca may have the option to terminate Lewandowski’s contract a year early at the end of the 2024-25 campaign.
That would be dependent on how the former Bayern man gets on in his third season with Barcelona.
It is said the club will be allowed to trigger the unusual clause if Lewandowski does not play in at least 55 per cent of Barcelona’s matches in 2024-25 – either starting or playing at least 45 minutes.

Lewandowski’s multi-million-pound wages change in each of the four years of his initial contract.
But letting him leave for free in the summer of 2025 – when the striker turns 37 – would save the club around £22.3m in wages.
Barca continue to struggle with massive debts and are constantly looking for ways to reduce costs.
So the option to take an ageing Lewandowski off the payroll early if he is not a regular on the pitch could be appealing.

Despite their financial woes, Xavi led the Blaugrana to the LaLiga title last season.
But they were reliant on cheap deals in the transfer market as Joao Felix and Joao Cancelo arrived on loan while Ilkay Gundogan and Inigo Martinez were free agents.
Oriol Romeu cost just £3m from Girona as the club brought in cash for Nico Gonzalez, Franck Kessie, Abde Ezzalzouli and Ousmane Dembele, the latter joining PSG for £43m.
They sit fourth in the table – losing just once in 14 matches – seven points off Real Madrid and Girona, with a game in hand.
Barca have also booked their place in the knockout stages of the Champions League with a match to spare. More

The legendary striker joined the Premier League at the age of 20 as he signed for Bolton and a successful two-year stint led to Chelsea.
The now 45-year-old enjoyed six successful years at Stamford Bridge where he won two back-to-back Premier League titles as well as the League Cup in 2005 and amassed 78 goals in 263 appearances.
The Iceland legend moved to Barcelona in 2006 where he registered 19 goals and 10 assists in 114 games and spent three years at the Nou Camp where he also won the Treble in 2009.
The forward then underwent quite a nomadic career that saw him returning to England for Tottenham, Fulham, Stoke and former club Bolton.

The Icelandic hero also played for Monaco, AEK Athens, Cercle Brugge, Club Brugge, Cangzhou Mighty Lions, Molde and Pune City before his retirement in 2016.
Have you figured him out yet? Here’s one last clue: He picked up 26 goals in 88 caps for his country…
And it’s of course Eidur Gudjohnsen, who now sees his three sons following in his footsteps as they all play as strikers.
    Sveinn Aron Gudjohnsen
Sveinn Aron Gudjohnsen is Eidur’s oldest as he was born in 1998 when his dad had just moved to the UK.

Sveinn’s started out at Barcelona’s famous La Masia academy in 2006 when he moved to Catalonia alongside his father and the rest of the family.
Five years later the forward joined Spanish side Gava until 2015 when he moved back to Iceland for HK where his senior career kicked off.
After a short stint at Icelandic outfits Valur and Breidablik the 25-year-old moved to Italy in 2018 for Spezia, who sent him out on loan to Ravenna as well as Odense.
Sveinn has been plying his trade in Swedish club Elfsborg since 2021 and has amassed two goals in 20 caps for Iceland.

    Andri Gudjohnsen
Andri Gudjohnsen started his youth career at Barcelona as well, but he joined La Masia a year after his dad left the Nou Camp and spent three seasons learning from the best.
The 21-year-old then joined Sveinn in Gava for two years and his impressive performances led him to Espanyol as well as Real Madrid in 2018.
The forward managed to turn some heads in Madrid and was promoted to Real’s B team in 2021 where he amassed four goals in 21 matches.
However, Andri never made it to Los Blancos’ first team and was offloaded in 2022 to Swedish outfit Norrkoping, who sent him out on loan to Danish side Lyngby in August.
The striker never played for Carlo Ancelotti’s side, but has registered five goals in 18 senior appearances for Iceland.

Four years later he also went to Barcelona’s La Masia academy until 2019 when he joined Andri at Real Madrid.
However, the 17-year-old only lasted three years in Madrid before moving to Sweden for Malmo.
After a successful year in the Swedish giants’ youth set up, Daniel was called up to the senior squad where he has only played once, making his debut in June.

The forward is too young to play for Iceland but is currently part of the national team’s Under-19 side.

He moved to the Basque club last summer following a two-year spell with Rayo Vallecano.
But he made his professional debut with Real Madrid in 2018 – at the time his dad was manager.
His first – and only – appearance for Los Blancos came in a 2-2 draw with Villarreal.
Zidane also handed a Real Madrid debut to his eldest son, Enzo.
The 27-year-old joined the club’s academy in 2014 and earned promotion to the first team two years later.
His first – and only – appearance for the La Liga giants came in a 6-1 win over Cultural Leonesa in the Copa del Rey.
Enzo also scored during his 45-minute cameo.
The midfielder left the club to join Alaves in 2017, but spent just six months at the Mendizorrotza Stadium before leaving for Swiss side FC Lausanne-Sport.
He went on to play for Aves, Almeria and Rodez.
Enzo is now with CF Fuenlabrada in the third tier of Spanish football.

Why Real Madrid wear white and have a crown on their crest – and how the decision had a huge impact on Leeds United

REAL MADRID’s famous white kits originate from an unsuspecting source. The LaLiga giants have played in their iconic white kits since being founded in 1902.

Incredibly, the inspiration behind their shirts came from an amateur side based in London.
Corinthian FC was a well-renowned club in England in the early 1900s with a reputation for playing a thrilling style of play.
One of the amateur side’s most famous results was an 11-3 win over Manchester United, which is still the Red Devil’s biggest defeat to date.
Two of Real’s founders visited the club in 1902 while they played a game at The Oval.
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
They were impressed by the club and decided to take the white of Corinthian FC’s shirts and make it into their own kit, adding matching white shorts and socks.
The club’s colours has gone on to inspire its nickname “Los Blancos” which is Spanish for ‘The Whites’.
Leeds United chose to base their kits on Real’s in the 1960s, inadvertently copying Corinthian FC.
Before that, the club would sometimes play in blue and yellow.

There is also history to Real’s name which translates to “Royal Madrid”.
The name was given to the club after King Alfonso XIII granted them royal patronage in 1920.
Before then, the club was simply known as Madrid Football Club.
During the 1920s, Real experimented with different colours however it proved to only be temporary.
Former club president Pedro Parages declared that the club would revert to the all-white kits as he believed that any deviation would be unlucky.
Due to the naming of the club, a crown was added to its crest.
However the crown vanished from the badge in 1931 when Spain became a republic.
This change saw the stripe of Castile added, while the crown returned to the badge in 1941.
There have been plenty of editions of Real’s kits over the years, with this season’s being a fan favourite. More
