Tottenham sealing Gareth Bale transfer would be a game-changing coup and one in the eye for Man Utd

FOR many, it would be a dream come true.
The ultimate return home. An absolute game-changer.

And it is not just Jose Mourinho who is desperate to see Gareth Bale back in a Tottenham shirt at a club where, as we know, it is “All or Nothing”.
Indeed, ever since the Welsh wonder left White Hart Lane for Real Madrid and £86million in 2013 — at the time a world-record transfer — the vast majority of Spurs fans have been wondering if he might contemplate a return.
For them, much as they revere Harry Kane as “one of their own”, re-signing Bale would represent another type of statement altogether.
Not only for Kane’s likely new golf partner, either.

With Mourinho’s squad licking their wounds after Sunday’s debacle against Everton, seeing Bale and his ponytail back in North London would banish the doubts and send a signal that the club remains upwardly mobile.

Where Bale has become the Aunt Sally for Bernabeu supporters — first to be blamed, last to be praised — he knows he remains idolised for his feats at Spurs.

They would be signing British football’s most successful export, a four-time Champions league winner, one who really wants to start winning trophies again.
On at least two previous occasions, as Bale’s relationship with Zinedine Zidane and a hostile Madrid media withered and died, the Spurs faithful had kidded themselves it was going to happen.
Now, with Mourinho pushing Daniel Levy’s buttons, the Spurs chairman is aware that even taking Bale back on loan — beating Manchester United to the punch — could alter the entire mood around N17, so the salivating can begin for real.

Levy, of course, always wanted to keep the option alive.
That was why as a condition of the original deal he insisted that, for the first six years of Bale’s stay in Madrid, Spurs would have first option on his future if any Premier League club agreed a deal.
Levy wanted to lose Bale as little as his then-boss — once Mourinho’s right-hand man before the pair fell out in spectacular style — Andre Villas-Boas.But Levy recognised Bale’s heart was set on Madrid, the club he had always wanted to play for.

    3

Wales superstar Gareth Bale resisted suggestions he should swap Spurs for Man Utd before he joined Real Madrid in 2013Credit: AFP and licensors
Levy was determined to ensure the maximum price for the swap of one white strip for another.
He did, too. Not only a fee that was officially £74m — to keep Cristiano Ronaldo happy — yet was actually, with Madrid paying over three years, closer to £86m.
But also that clause, giving Spurs the right to outbid any Prem rival who reached agreement with Madrid for Bale’s services, although it ran out in June last year.
Levy also knew it was likely that United would be the rival club.
After all, the Old Trafford side coveted Bale during his first spell at Tottenham.
It is not unfair to suggest Welsh squad get-togethers were seen as a chance for Ryan Giggs to whisper sweet nothings about what his fellow winger could achieve under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Bale, to his credit, resisted. He made it clear he was not looking to leave Spurs for any Prem rival, that only Europe’s greatest club would persuade him to move on.
Bale may now wonder if he is being seen as a short-term alternative until Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can finally land Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund.
But where Bale has become the Aunt Sally for the Bernabeu supporters — the first to be blamed, the last to be praised — he knows he remains idolised for his feats at Spurs.
Tottenham fans revelled in watching him grow from the gangly colt who could literally not win a game — he played 25 matches over more than two years, under three managers, before finally tasting a Prem victory — into a global superstar.
Younger supporters will have been told by their parents about those two nights against Inter Milan, “Taxi for Maicon”, the lung-busting runs and blistering finishes, the way he carried his team with fearless self-belief.
    FAITH IN MOURINHO
For all parties, it looks the better deal. United may offer history and cash. Yet if he could bring silverware to Spurs, even at 31, it would ensure his status as a Tottenham immortal, a true legend of the Lane.
For Levy, too, it would be a coup — and one in the eye for United.
Levy has brooded over United’s raiding parties, increasingly angry as he was powerless to prevent Michael Carrick and then Dimitar Berbatov being enticed away. So beating United to Bale would really matter.
Arguably, though, it would matter even more to Mourinho, proof that he remains the silver-tongued managerial superstar.
Mourinho knows landing Bale would alter the dressing room dynamic instantly. A proven winner, joining a side that knows it has under-delivered in those seasons of near-misses under Mauricio Pochettino.
It shows public faith in the Mourinho project.

For Bale a £1billion stage to strut his stuff, to prove Zidane wrong, in front of — at some point — an adoring audience who are 100 per cent on his side and the chance to make sure he is at peak fitness for Wales’ Euro adventure next summer.
Time for a new banner, maybe.
    “Tottenham. Wales. Golf.” Stuff Madrid.

Man Utd blow as Tottenham enter transfer race for Real Madrid left-back Sergio Reguilon

TOTTENHAM are reportedly close to agreeing a deal for Real Madrid left-back Sergio Reguilon.
The news will come as a blow to Manchester United who had been keen to bring the 23-year-old to Old Trafford.

But according to The Athletic, it is Spurs who are in pole position to prise the Spanish international away from the Bernabeu.

They state that Tottenham and Los Blancos are nearing an agreement for Reguilon that will see the player permanently joining the North London outfit.
Zinedine Zidane is happy for the defender – who starred on loan at Sevilla last season – to leave as he has Marcelo and Ferland Mendy to count on.

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Real want to include a buy-back clause in Reguilon’s contract – something United were unwilling to accept.
He tweeted: “Tottenham have a made an official bid to Real Madrid for Sergio Reguilon.
“Manchester United are in talks with Real but *won’t* accept to pay €30m (£27.5m) and *won’t* accept any the ‘buy back clause’ asked by the Spanish club.
“Today afternoon, Tottenham made an official bid for €30m (£27.5m) to Real for Reguilon.

“#THFC have accepted also the “buy back clause” and the ‘pre-emption clause’ [refused both by #MUFC], so Real Madrid can match any other bid in the future to bring back Reguilon.

“Reguilon deal is not completed yet – battle is on, but Tottenham have an agreement with Real Madrid and are now working to agree personal terms with the player.
“Man United have the ‘ok’ by Reguilon, but there’s *no* agreement with Real. #THFC hope to convince him.”
SunSport have also exclusively revealed how both Spurs and United are competing to sign Real outcast Gareth Bale on loan.

The five changes Memphis Depay made to go from Man Utd nightmare to becoming Barcelona’s saviour

MEMPHIS DEPAY left Manchester United in January 2017, having failed to make an impact at Old Trafford.
Viewed as an underwhelming presence in attack and, incorrectly as he has asserted, a party boy – few Red Devils fans were upset when they decided to take a £10million hit on shipping him out to Lyon.

    6

Depay has developed into a consistent star at LyonCredit: Reuters

But three-and-a-half years later Memphis, 26, looks a man reborn – diligently taking responsibility at Lyon and consistently producing superb performances.
Some had written off the Dutch forward when United gave up on him after just 18 months, but such has been his turnaround that Barcelona are now on the brink of signing him for £28m – bringing him back to the big time.
Let’s take a look at the factors that have seen him rise back to prominence in European football.
    ‘FEELING FREE’
When Depay decided he wanted out of Old Trafford, he was mature beyond his 22 years in making sure that he made the right move.

While many at the time felt that Lyon was quite a step down for the mercurial talent, Memphis himself was confident that he’d made the right call, largely down to the style of play he’d be able to fit into.
Giels Brouwer, founder of sports analytics company SciSports, was consulted by Depay when looking for the best option.
And he revealed on his Reddit: “The agent of Memphis asked us to visit Memphis in Manchester where he was living at that moment.

    6

“I went there with two colleagues and we watched a Champions League game on his couch. In our discussion about the next step in his career, he was really open about what he wanted and didn’t want.

“He wanted to play ‘more freely’, he wanted to be ‘important for the team’ and wanted to play in a big five competition with a coach that had a clear playing style.
“We translated these questions into data searches. We looked for instance at his playing style at PSV and the Dutch national team and compared that with the playing style of Man United. We noticed that he was involved with a lot more defensive actions at Man United.”
    STAR STATUS

    6

Skipper Depay is an undoubted star at LyonCredit: EPA
Memphis started just one game in the first half of the 2016-17 season for United, with manager Jose Mourinho clearly feeling unable to depend on his talented star.
And as Brouwer revealed, Memphis wanted to be “important” over almost anything – and he’s certainly been just that at Lyon.
Such has been their reliance on him, particularly under current manager Rudi Garcia, that he has been given the captain’s armband.
And rather than a rarely-used winger, Memphis is often now deployed as a central striker, shouldering much of Lyon’s attacking burden – particularly in the Champions League.
Despite the emergence of ex-Celtic forward Moussa Dembele, Depay is the main man at Groupama Stadium, having scored 57 and assisted 43 goals in 140 appearances for the Ligue 1 side.
Missing the talismanic Depay for much of last season with a ruptured cruciate ligament was a key factor in Lyon failing to qualify for Europe.
    PLAYING STYLE

    6

The Dutchman thrives on being able to express himselfCredit: Offside
Again as Brouwer cited, Depay wanted to “play with freedom” – not something always associated with being a Mourinho winger.
He wanted to find a club in which he could find that comfort within a system, and he managed that at Lyon, initially under former manager Bruno Genesio.
In April 2018 he told OLTV: “I think I’m at my best right now. I feel very free on the field. I have confidence, and that’s good. I don’t think too much about the pitch. I’m just enjoying the moment.
“I’ve felt the difference since the beginning of the season. It’s important for me to play every match the best I can.
“First and foremost, I want to play well. I want to be at my best every game. The rest will come naturally.”
Mainly featuring centrally alongside one or both of strikers Karl Toko Ekambi and Dembele, Depay is given that “freedom” in abundance to make things happen for his side – hence his amazing output.
    MORE RESPONSIBILITY

    6

Depay calmly ‘panenka’d’ a high-pressure penalty against Juventus last seasonCredit: AP:Associated Press
Depay was, perhaps unfairly, seen as a bit of a liability at Manchester United.
From Wayne Rooney supposedly telling him not to turn up to Under-21 games in any “fancy stuff”, and allegations of being a “party boy” – Depay struggled at Old Trafford.
But in an interview with The Times last month, he insisted: “I remember some of the quotes about me, like “party boy”. Pure lies.
“I went out only once in one-and-a-half years in Manchester – and it wasn’t even fun.”
Not only has Depay now fully matured into a brilliant player, but he also possesses leadership qualities in abundance – earning the captain’s armband at Lyon as well as the universal respect of his team-mates.
And such is his manager Garcia’s admiration for his skipper, he recently said: “Aside from that, for a lot of my great players, if they have the option to join a club that is built to win the Champions League, and we came up against a few of them in the Champions League this year, I will personally take them there in my car.”
    INCREASED OUTPUT

    6

Depay has contributed to 100 strikes (57 goals, 43 assists) at LyonCredit: Reuters
As alluded to earlier, Depay’s output has increased immeasurably.
Some will point to the step down in league, but his consistency should be absolutely nothing to be sniffed at.
And he’s also delivered in Champions League pressure moments.
At Manchester United he only managed seven goals and six assists in 53 games under Louis van Gaal and then Mourinho.
But at Lyon he has contributed to a combined 100 goals in 140 outings.
And last season he came of age in the Champions League too – scoring six times in eight appearances – including against RB Leipzig and Juventus.

Kylian Mbappe ‘willing to take pay cut’ to complete Real Madrid transfer in blow to Liverpool and Man Utd

KYLIAN MBAPPE is willing to take a pay cut to sign for Real Madrid, according to reports.
Paris Saint-Germain are determined to hold onto the French forward, whose contract expires in 2022.

But advances from Madrid are growing with more and more reports that an offer will be launched next summer.
Should a bid land, Mbappe will reportedly do what he can to make the deal happen.
That includes, according to Spanish show El Chiringuito, cutting his salary.

Mbappe is thought to earn £375,000-a-week in Paris after signing from Monaco in 2017.
Talks between PSG and the 21-year-old over a contract renewal have reportedly focused on bumping his wage up to £600,000-a-week.
Yet money may be no issue if Mbappe gets the green light to join Real.
Los Blancos hope PSG will not put up much of a fight if the player has already made up his mind.

A transfer fee of just £111million has been touted for the World Cup winner.

Such a price could even entice Premier League clubs such as Liverpool or Manchester United into making a bid.
But Madrid are certainly the frontrunners in any Mbappe deal, with the striker calling Real boss Zinedine Zidane his childhood “idol”.
He said in January: “I’ve had phases. To start, as a child, it was Zidane.
“If you’re a boy and you’re French, your idol is Zidane.

Real Madrid already have one of the highest wage bills in the world

“After that, it was Cristiano [Ronaldo] and I’ve been lucky enough to face him. Then it was the Brazilian Ronaldo for the way he played.”
The previous year, Zidane had remarked: “You know that I have known [Mbappe] for a long time.
“I am already in love with him, firstly as a person, because he came to do a trial here a long time ago.”

How Barcelona could line up with Memphis Depay and Lionel Messi up front, Luis Suarez dumped and new-look midfield

WITH Lionel Messi staying put for now, new Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman knows the importance of hitting the ground running as manager of his former club.
The Dutchman succeeded the sacked Quique Setien with the club in crisis, having been humiliated by Bayern Munich and with Messi hellbent on leaving for pastures new.

While Messi relented, not having the heart to take his beloved club to court, Koeman still faces a difficult job in uniting a fractured club and instantly reinstating them as challengers for both domestic and European honours.
Experienced pros such as Arturo Vidal and Luis Suarez are to be ousted, while the likes of Philippe Coutinho could be given a second chance.
In Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Koeman has the ideal goalkeeper at his disposal – but his back four may need some work.

The 57-year-old is likely to get Barcelona playing their traditional 4-3-3 formation again – but has admitted that they could be more defensive this time around.
He said: “It may be different and somewhat more defensive than what has been seen in recent years, but the objective is to move the ball, hold on to it and find the spaces to play between the lines, and behind rival midfielders.”
Versatile academy product Sergi Roberto could get the nod over Nelson Semedo at right-back – while Jordi Alba still has the quality even at 31 to star on the opposite flank.
Gerard Pique offered to step aside in the wake of their 8-2 mauling by Bayern, but his experience could be useful to keep around – particularly if Barca seal the signing of Manchester City youngster Eric Garcia, 19, to partner him.

Sergio Busquets is thought to be not quite what he was at the heart of midfield and could begin to be phased out – with new signing Miralem Pjanic able to dictate play from deep.

Barca fans will be hoping for more from Frenkie de Jong in his second season at the club, while Koeman has revealed that he will give Philippe Coutinho a second chance to shine at the club, having scored against them for Bayern last month.
Messi, happy or not, will take his place on the right of Barcelona’s attacking trident.
And he could be joined by Memphis Depay, with Barca reportedly close to sealing the ex-Manchester United star’s signature from Lyon in a £28million deal.

With all my respect, Griezmann must play in his position
    Ronald Koeman

In place of Luis Suarez through the middle will be Antoine Griezmann, with Koeman having admitted that the Frenchman needs to be played in his proper position.
He said last month: “With all my respect, Griezmann must play in his position.
“It is not extreme. You have to play in your position.
“This is most important part of being a coach; knowing your players well and getting the most out of them.”

Barcelona to offer Man City take-it-or-leave-it £14m transfer bid for Eric Garcia or snap up teen for FREE next summer

BARCELONA are set to offer Manchester City a take-it-or-leave-it £14million for defender Eric Garcia – or they’ll snap him up for free next summer, according to reports.
The teenager’s contract runs out in June next year and it appears he has no intention of signing a new one.

    1

Garcia made 13 Premier League appearances for Man City last season

Now Barcelona are reportedly looking to back City into a corner with an offer of cash to get the player a year earlier.
Mundo Deportivo reports that Pep Guardiola is still keen to get a year out of Garcia and may not be tempted by the money.
Eithad chiefs already turned down an £8m bid last week but it is not known if the higher price will tempt them.
The Spaniard made 13 appearances in the Premier League last season but with Nathan Ake recruited from Bournemouth, he may not be needed to fill gaps as much this year.

The Garcia speculation continues despite the 19-year-old claiming he was “focused on next season”, and suggesting that he was ruling out an immediate move to Catalonia.
Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman is believed to be keen on Garcia as a long-term replacement for Gerard Pique.
The Dutchman is undergoing a ruthless squad overhaul at the Nou Camp and getting Garcia in a year early could help the rebuild.
Reports from early summer suggested he was the “priority” target for the Spanish giants.

City have been linked to Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly as a potential replacement if Garcia was to leave now.

But his boss Gennaro Gattuso has been adamant that the combative defender will not be sold unless City reach the £70m asking price.
The 29-year-old has a number of sterling seasons in Serie A under his belt and it is felt he could cope in the Premier League.
City have been a centre-back short since club legend Vincent Kompany left to join Anderlecht.

Furious Lionel Messi barked ‘stop kicking me, asshole’ at ‘idiot’ Nastic ace Ribelles in first game back for Barcelona

LIONEL MESSI called opposition player Javier Ribelles an “asshole” and an “idiot” during his return to action for Barcelona on Saturday, the Gimnastic star has claimed.
The Argentine appeared in Barca’s 3-1 friendly win over Gimnastic de Tarragona, playing the first 45 minutes as he aims to get up to full fitness.

But despite being no stranger to the rough treatment of opposition defenders, Messi appeared to be in no mood no take it lying down when he faced the third-tier outfit.
Ribelles, 28, claimed after the match that he was asked by the six-time Ballon d’Or winner: “What are you doing, idiot?
“Do you want to stop kicking me, asshole?”
But despite the match being a friendly, Ribelles wasn’t prepared to give anything less than his best effort.

He continued: “It was clear that Messi could not turn, because if he does and faces you it is very complicated.
“In one of those that he is going to receive from his back, I will give him everything, with his feet, his hands, with the chest.”
And in the face of the 33-year-old’s anger, Ribelles tried to charm him with flattery.
He admitted that he told Messi: “It’s that if you’re the best I have to kick you, I can’t let you turn because you’re going to beat me.”

    4

And beat him he did, although it was Ousmane Dembele, Antoine Griezmann and Philippe Coutinho that got on the scoresheet, with Javi Bonilla striking for the visitors.
Messi returned to training last Monday, after deciding against taking Barcelona to court in a bid to leave the club this summer.
And he even turned up for extra sessions on the players’ day off on Thursday, as he seeks to catch up.
But according to Argentine legend Julio Olarticoechea, fans aren’t going to find Messi in a happy mood this season.
The 61-year-old told Crack Deportivo: “Messi has his problems at Barcelona, so we’re not going to find him in the best mood.
“Everything is going through his mind right now.”

It may be different and somewhat more defensive than what has been seen in recent years
Ronald Koeman on how Barcelona will set up

And unlikely to improve his mood is Ronald Koeman’s confirmation that his side could be more defensive this season.
The Dutchman said: “It may be different and somewhat more defensive than what has been seen in recent years, but the objective is to move the ball, hold on to it and find the spaces to play between the lines, and behind rival midfielders.
“I think this team can do it because we have midfielders to play like that.”
